In collaboration with branding agency Jackman Reinvents B+H redesigned three of Hertz’s airport locations and 15 of its off-airport locations. These 18 initial designs have since served as models for additional refreshed Hertz locations worldwide. As the culmination of a full Hertz rebranding exercise by Jackman Reinvents, Hertz’s new rental facilities needed to reflect the company’s revamped identity and deliver on the promise of a streamlined approach to car rental. Each location’s architecture, fixtures, finishes and signage work together to carry the new Hertz brand into the physical realm and define a consistent, recognizable environment that boosts Hertz’s presence in the market.

Jackman Reinvention Inc. Location Toronto, Canada Size 18,530 ft2 | 1,720 m2 Status Completed in 2013 Client Joe Jackman

Jackman is a creative management consulting and activation company focused on “retail reinvention.” In 2012, Jackman sought to reinvent their own work environment, looking for a modern industrial space with vintage elements. They needed new, non-traditional office space that could support their collaborative creative process and act like a second home to their employees. A valued partner of ours, B+H has collaborated with Jackman on past reinvention endeavours – most recently, the Hertz rebrand. Feeling that B+H had a firsthand understanding of their work culture, Jackman engaged B+H to create a work environment that would meet their growing needs.

The location selected is a two-floor, 18,530 square foot space in a west-downtown heritage post-and-beam structure. New materials like marble tile, concrete floors, stainless steel and wood plank recall the building’s industrial past, while furnishings are sleek and modern. Workspace is laid out with creativity in mind. “Breakout booths” flank a cluster of glassfronted boardrooms, allowing groups to filter in and out of boardroom meetings and start up spontaneous offshoot meetings nearby. Jackman moved into their new space in the spring of 2013. As posters, graphics and props pass through the office, the space serves as an ever-changing stage for Jackman’s work and a true representation of who Jackman is as a firm.

Harbinger Communications Location Toronto, Canada Size 10,000 ft2 | 930 m2 Status Completed in 2013 Client Harbinger Communications

Harbinger Communications is a leader within the Canadian Marketing landscape. As business has grown significantly for them over the past few years, Harbinger was beginning to feel constrained in their charming, but highlycompartmentalized multi-level space. The mandate was to assist in the site selection process and then to create an interior space that would be inviting and stimulate creativity and collaboration - while also acting as showcase for the innovative work that they do. To achieve this, a common studio space was created in the centre of the office. Ninety percent of the staff was seated in this open

office environment while the remainder work in glassfronted spaces that are closely connected to the studio. To further the interaction between the staff, a large multipurpose space was created– serving as a lunchroom, casual meeting space, yoga studio, town hall and screening room. The finished product is a warm and inviting space that is bright, fresh and reflective of the young creative minds that walk through the door every morning. The graphics and signage developed for Harbinger were bold and impactful yet also playful keeping with the client’s ideology.

Henkel Canada Corporate Office Location Mississauga, Canada Size 60,000 ft2 | 5,574 m2 Status Completed in 2012 Client Henkel Canada

The corporate offices of Henkel Canada are designed to house their three Canadian divisions under one single brand, in one location. As well, a key objective was to apply global brand standards to the Mississauga office. The new standards apply to the physical space, types of finishes and furniture. Henkel’s vision for its new offices is one in which the space and amenity needs of the component divisions are met while shared resources are centralized, creating greater efficiency and enabling knowledge sharing between employees. Accordingly, separate spaces were

created for Henkel Canada’s three divisions to address their particular needs (for example, the adhesives division has a direct connection to a lab space used for continual testing), while a central core and circulation spine were used to connect areas used by all employees. These common areas include conferencing, informal meeting, staff facilities, and a large lunchroom. The design also maximizes access to light and views by locating the private offices on the interior and the workstations that are used by the majority of staff in the open area with direct access to natural light.

Lack of space was posing restrictions on class sizes, faculty office availability, extracurricular events and student interaction, with the law school’s buildings ranking as the #1 source of student dissatisfaction in each of the last four years. Slated to open in 2015, the faculty’s new Jackman Law building is designed to provide the school with an additional 66,000 ft2 of space in an iconic new home. A dramatic wing overlooking Queen’s Park Crescent will create a new landmark in the area with a rhythmic façade of glass and nickel fins. The crescent-shaped design follows the curve of the street in front of it to fully embrace the site’s prominent location. The new wing will include a 210-student lecture hall designed to function as both a classroom and a moot court, several seminar halls, a new student commons lounge and forum space, faculty and staff offices and a new food services outlet.

Built as a link between this addition and the school’s existing Bora Laskin Law Library, a new Law Forum space will be created to act as a link and a social hub - helping to integrate the Faculty of Law’s newest addition in with the school’s historic past and foster an improved sense of community. Construction will also include renovations to the library, adding a new, two-storey reading room. An additional, light renovation to the school’s historic Flavelle House will reduce the building’s energy use by 13%. Altogether, the new facilities will double the law school’s existing space and provide a world-class environment for student learning, interaction and engagement. As the new main entrance to Humber’s North Campus in Etobicoke, the Humber College Learning Resource Commons will serve as an inviting new home for student support, learning and socializing at Humber. The six-storey, 260,000 ft2 facility will include a new library, act as a centralized hub for student services and provide space for Humber’s School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and college administration. While some parts of the complex will be open to students 24/7, others require more restricted access. The building’s design strikes a balance between expansive, lively spaces that serve the full school community and more secluded areas for faculty and administration.

The first floor Welcome Centre and Showcase area will feature floor-to-ceiling glass, connecting the vibrant open space to the promenade outside and inviting those passing by to come in and see the student work on display in the Commons gallery area. The first floor also offers students easy access to a café and various support services. A six-storey atrium carves into the building mass to create an amorphous negative space where various programs are visually linked. From the ground floor, a dramatic featured staircase winds upwards through the bright atrium space and encourages foot traffic. The global face of healthcare is changing in response to an aging population and a lean towards environments that promote patients’ overall well-being. The design of the Gleneagles Medini Hospital reflects this shift and revolves around our key principles that thoughtfully designed spaces and access to nature can contribute to the well-being of individuals and promote healing. Working collaboratively with STH, our team’s design approach includes the incorporation of natural light in inpatient rooms and corridors, artful public spaces, natural and tactile materials throughout and windows in inpatient rooms with views that connect them to the outdoors while allowing for privacy.

Positioned as a landmark in its community, the main entrance drop-off zone is visibly articulated, paired with clear way-finding signage and a landscaped plaza that welcomes patients, staff, and visitors. Locally-sourced materials enhance the building exterior and tie the hospital to the architecture throughout the region. Anticipating the on-going evolution of clinical systems and technology, flexibility is built-in to allow for future expansion and changes. The design of the structure, physical layout, and overall flow of functions keep modularity in mind and equip the hospital with the fundamentals required for growth. The design also reflects a commitment to sustainability through targeting energy efficiency in building envelope components and mechanical systems.

Stratus Bar & Restaurant Location Toronto, Canada Size 2,400 ft2 | 220 m2 Status Completed in 2013 Client Cambridge Group of Clubs

The Toronto Athletic Club occupies three of the top floors in a Toronto-Dominion Centre tower. Stratus, the bar and restaurant of the ‘Club Above’ in the heart of the Financial District, needed a renovation that would transform a dated, unmemorable interior into a destination befitting the iconic modernity of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Toronto-Dominion Centre architecture. The desired ambience was elegant yet relaxed: the space would be rented out for events such as weddings, but at the same time the club’s owners wanted members to put on casual clothes after a workout and feel comfortable dining there. The owners also sought a design that would make it possible to hold multiple concurrent events. In less than 3,000 square feet, the design team created a versatile sequence of varied yet aesthetically unified zones. From the elevator,

a spectacular view to the exterior opens up through the central bar area, while lattice-like bronze metal screens with mirrors inserted into them layer a veiling of privacy over seating areas on either sides of the space. A 90-degree turn leads into the dining area, which can be subdivided into two rooms and/or closed off from the bar by pivoting doors. A 10-seat private dining room partially enclosed by curving, bottle-lined glass screens adds to the range of spaces. Prior to the renovation, Stratus was a members-only venue serving breakfast, lunch and early dinners. Now open to the public, and open later in the evening, its revenue has doubled. With this large renovation, CHIL Interior Design was responsible for the architecture and complete redesign of all public areas, including the hotel conference centre, lounge, ballrooms and guestrooms, as well as the hotel restaurant, Wild Sage Kitchen & Bar. The overall conceptual design was driven by Regina’s location in the heart of the Canadian Plains and its rich history as the centre of Prairie industry. The hotel’s colour palette of blue and ochre is derived from the open sky and the region’s vast fields of wheat. By combining rustic and contemporary elements, the public spaces strike a balance between what Regina was and what the city is now becoming. Carefully selected pieces of historic

furniture evoke rural charm, while slick upholstery and other, more streamlined, chairs take a modern approach. These new twists on historical elements are carried through into the hotel corridors and guestrooms, where the blue and ochre colours continue with a more solid, masculine approach to the overall feel of the spaces. Warm wood tones mixed with classic furniture styling create an inviting and comfortable property that is destined to remain a landmark Regina hotel.

ARC Restaurant Location Vancouver, Canada Status Completed in 2014 Client Westmont Hospitality Group & Ocean Pacific Hotel Group

Located in the Fairmont Waterfront, the redesign design of this restaurant focused primarily on creating a new and engaging lounge with a more centralized bar encouraging a relaxed and entertaining area separate from the remaining dining spaces. In addition to the new bar and lounge area, a feature chef’s table serves dual purpose as a breakfast buffet. New banquette seating was added to provide more intimate niches along with a new private dining room intended as a multi-purpose room used for both meetings as well as private parties. In order to define this space separately from the more typical hotel restaurant, bold material choices were selected giving a very warm, comfortable and contemporary look. Rich charcoals, hazy grays and

mauves with accents of bronze and gold tones helped create a more moody atmosphere. The West coast feel is also felt in the choice of furniture design which is both comfortable and classic providing varying options for guests and customers. The large volumous space and accentuated arc in the floor plan provided many challenges that were resolved through dramatic lighting, dark tones and an overall rezoning of functions. As a result, this new restaurant was transformed to compliment the celebrated new menu and to offer a new distinctive dining experience for Vancouverites and visiting guests.

Set in the heart of Calgary, it is the city’s oldest and most esteemed hotel, celebrating its centennial in 2014. The renovation included a transformation of 205 well-appointed guestrooms and heritage suites, as well as guestroom corridors. Each of the rooms is quite varied in layout and features which provides guests with a sense of uniqueness and adds to the charm of the property. Conceptually, the driving force was to celebrate the beauty of this traditional landmark and further complement its rich history and architecture with elegant furnishings and finishes while incorporating the essence of the city. Original features such as the high ceilings with

medallions, wall friezes and tall windows were refreshed and showcased. A feeling of contemporary sophistication was created with the layering of luxurious soothing tones and opulent textures. A look to Calgary’s cowboy past was achieved with the use of masculine cognac and grey leathers, metal nailhead details and historic artwork, which was softened with warm neutrals and refined wood tones. Furniture pieces were designed to embody the fine balance between classic form and contemporary finishes. The small scale bathrooms were reimagined with a focus on tailored and sophisticated finishes that combine the sparkle of chrome accents, white marble tile and dramatic stone countertops. Arbour Glen Location Toronto, Canada Size 1500 ft2 | 140 m2 Status Completed in 2011 Client Arbour Glen Condo Corporation

Revisiting a half-century-old project is rare, but it happened with Arbour Glen. Originally designed by our firm’s founder nearly 60 years ago, Arbour Glen is one of the few mid-century modernist buildings designated as a heritage property. Keeping with the mid-century design ethic of doing more with less, many of the unsightly functional components of a lobby, like closets and storage units, were discreetly tucked away in veneered wall panels that provide an elegant backdrop to the cantilevered limestone countertop that defines the main circulation route through the lobby. An existing

structural column was cunningly mirrored as the basis for a sculptural plinth, containing an architectural model of the building in its ravine surroundings carved in cherry wood – paying homage to the original architect. Three main finishes predominate: silver limestone, cherry wood and black slate, with a textured wallcovering and carpet in supporting roles. Contrasting white and dark stone demarks the lounge/sitting areas and circulation routes, while the cherry wood millwork warms and the bulkheads hide mechanical systems.

anchored by a 38-storey hotel/office tower and 37-storey condominium tower. A glazed skylit pedestrian circulation element meanders and bends like a river between the plazas, cascading down to a shopping area to accommodate the level difference between the plazas.
