Resort Design
Philosophy
PRISTINE SANDY BEACHES. The gentle ocean breeze. Salty air and sun-filled days. Our visions of ideal vacation getaways can often include these specific elements but specify nowhere in particular. Dedicated to crafting authentic and unique travel experiences, the place-makers at B+H take a careful approach to resort design. Creating additional value for vacation real estate properties begins by understanding how to engage and enlighten guests. At B+H, we collaborate closely with global hotel brands and operators to create memorable guest experiences through suites and a rich array of spaces and amenities that meet the practical needs of owners, staff, and guests. We design facilities that build upon guests’ anticipation of their experience, from the moment they arrive, through to their departure and subsequent return.
INTEGRATED APPROACHES CREATE COHESIVE DESIGNS. An experienced design and consulting firm that offers world-class planning, architecture, landscape, and interior expertise, we create whole solutions. Offering these services as a greater whole, rather than simply the sum of its parts, creates valuable synergies and efficiencies. Every design challenge requires a unique solution and our integrated design approach allows us to hone in on distinctive points of differentiation for every development and every client – in every location.
We blend planning, architecture, and landscape elements with qualities of the local land, culture, climate, and site orientation. The result is the creation of destinations that are unique, inspiring, and contextual. Our approach to each resort project is to complement its context without overwhelming it, establishing positive connections between people and their surroundings for destinations that guests remember, dream about, and freely recommend to their family and friends.

Every brand has a unique story to tell, and today’s leading hospitality brands convey these stories through physical spaces that consider everything from big-picture vision to the finest details. Through collaboration, partnership, deep research, and an understanding of current and future trends, specialized hospitality design inspires people to explore the world beyond their daily lives.
Our versatile firm understands how to deliver visionary hospitality design across all disciplines. With Architecture, Planning & Landscape and Advance Strategy services offered by the B+H studio, and Interior Design services offered by CHIL Interior Design, we’re uniquely positioned to create environments that provide memorable guest experiences, allow for future flexibility, and anticipate the needs of owners and staff to continually drive performance. Hotel or Hospital?
Opening Doors OpenWays has developed ‘a line‑busting solution’ that completely removes the frustration associated with traditional hotel check-in. Offering a Mobile Key that is securely sent over the air to a traveling guest’s mobile phone prior to arrival at the hotel not only removes the need to stop at the front desk, but it alleviates any stress the traveler may feel anticipating delays and long waits at their destination hotel.
There is a rising trend among international hospitals to provide “medihotels” for their traveling clients. In lodgings and accommodations owned and managed by the hospital and located close to the treatment venue, patients and their companions can enjoy the safety, convenience, and amenities of staying close to their medical center of choice. Lifestyle-equipped facilities that home-style comfort for longer stays.
Authenticity Travelers today are planning to travel around authentic experiences. Cooking, art & culture, and other special interest themes are gaining attention, as are destinations that protect the environment and endangered species. We have an increasing thirst for knowledge and learning.

A 393 guest room vacation hotel sitting on a 12-hectare beachfront facing the Caribbean Sea, the project consisted of a main building and 19 garden building clusters. Landscape amenities include a scale model of the historical NiĂąa Ship from Christopher Columbus, an event plaza with a performance stage, a 70m central recreation pool with walk-in beach edge, submersed seating, spa pools, and double level pool bar, 2 informal pools with spa within the major garden courts, feature gardens with rock cascade fountain, private event pavilions and a large selection of plant species to create a rich tropical outdoor experience.

We originally presented the client with three design concepts for Hoi An Marriott in Vietnam - each featuring a distinctive configuration of landscape elements. The preferred option places emphasis on incorporating as much native greenery as possible and creating a garden feel throughout the resort. Views of the water from the rooms are enhanced through a thoughtful plan that avoids placing trees along main view corridors. Hoi An Marriott features a stretch of exclusive beachfront that sits along open ocean area. With the aim of mitigating less than ideal water conditions during inclement weather and maximizing beach time for guests, an elevated sandbank was added to increase the depth of the beach and act as a buffer. Other water activities on the resort include main, family, and quiet pools. A meandering lazy creek runs through the
site, connecting spaces and amenities. Further connections are made to surrounding local attractions to engage guests with the local culture. A host of rich amenities cater to the needs of the resort’s range of guests, which include mostly families and couples looking for short and long-term accommodations.

Forming a seascape of limestone pillars along the northeast coast of Vietnam, Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our architecture, and planning and landscape teams worked collaboratively to design this two-tower development including hotel and residential suites complete with retail space, a casino, conference amenities, and complementary landscape design. Built on an existing hill fronting the Ha Long Bay, this DoubleTree By Hilton development is tucked into the landform creating a strong sense of place and reflecting the natural beauty of the surrounding land and foothills. Thoughtful incorporation of terracing and banding throughout the landscape design interprets the local contours of the terra and is reminiscent of local rice paddy fields. The natural and memorable flow patterns and organic forms throughout the landscape design connect the site to the mountainous region directly to the north and work as a clever wayfinding
tactic. The elevated terracing and natural sloping of the site lead guests progressively to their arrival at the entry and guide them along their subsequent travels through the resort. Terraced promenades also work to connect the resort to its surrounding context by acting as easy connections to public amenities situated across the street. Furthering the feeling of connection on the site is a main pool that is extended along the length of the resort featuring an engaging edge that links to the activity at the podium.

The landscape design of the Pullman Phu Quoc Hotel Resort reflects the Pullman brand principles and local aesthetic. Overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, the resort offers guests a unique experience as a gateway to an island oasis. This impressive experience unfolds as guests make their way through the resort, beginning with their arrival at the main entry. Passing cascading water features, they meander along garden pathways that lead them to their rooms. The resort experience continues to unfold as guests wander through an organic landscape design that mirrors the curved form of the resort’s architecture. A rich program of amenities appeals to the young professionals and families Pullman is looking to attract including a central open event space, several pools, Jacuzzis, and kid’s play areas. A deep site, this escape is designed as an ‘island within an island’ to address the fact that the further inland guests move
on the site, the farther they move from the ocean. The central pool is designed as a floating island in the middle of the resort, complete with a relaxing beach front. Waterways that weave through shared outdoor spaces contribute to the beach experience from anywhere on the grounds. To mitigate privacy issues of the main beach area being partly accessible by the public, smaller ‘islands’ are built along the beach front to act as a buffer.

The programme for the Emerald Bay Marina will accommodate 200 residential units – apartments, golf townhomes, marina homes and bungalows, a marina promenade
and retail village, hotel and small casino, marina amenities and yacht club. The marina will provide 133 total docks totaling 9,100 linear feet accommodating a range of boats from 40 to 265 feet.

Billed as the perfect retreat, the small island is less than two miles in length, about half mile wide, and located 40 minutes by boat from Great Exuma. The vision plan includes single family beach villas, stilted overwater bungalows extending into the island’s coves, a welcoming reception area with lounge and restaurant, redevelopment of the existing marina and yacht club and a retail promenade. Trails, which integrate with the natural open system, crisscross the island lengthwise. A small interpretive centre dedicated to the Little Farmer’s Cay first inhabitants and history is located within the natural settings of the locale.

Tucked away in Great Exuma, Catch A Fire is a popular tourist destination. A restaurant hotspot that has been renovated over the years with additional buildings and amenities, our client was interested in expanding to create an eco-resort. A deep site with changes in topography, the landscape design uses the nuances of the land to create a secluded haven. Sustainability became the prime driver of design and key elements include sourcing from local suppliers, preserving a natural look and feel, and taking a responsible approach to energy resources and consumption.
for each. A small site, villas are situated to maximize space and views while allowing for the privacy guests would expect from a boutique eco-resort. The top levels of the resort’s two-level villas embrace treetop views, while ground levels focus on taking guests into the lushness of the local planting. Taking cues from the native form of the land, the resort’s landscape design displays an integrated approach by blending nature with design.

The design for the Lusail Thai Island, as a fusion between the two cultures, draws its inspiration from the rich and vibrant Thai culture and blissful nature, blended with the very essence of Qatar traditional hospitality. Comprised of 200 rooms, 100 private chalets and bungalows, and public amenities, this landmark project incorporates different types of luxury resort facilities within the beauty of the island’s natural topography. Working closely with the client, B+H Planning and Landscape explored the ways in which the resort could best respond to the needs of guests to provide the level of shelter, privacy, and luxury expected. The resort’s landscape design complements its architecture and revolves around the use of xeriscape, making it ideal for the local arid climate and blending seamlessly with the context of the surrounding land. Through thoughtful planning, landscape, and built form, we employed a holistic approach to create an elegant, sustainable, and functionally organized solution. To accommodate the number of guest accommodations required, all services are tucked under the raised level of the
central island, leaving the grounds free for the guesthouse amenities and gardens. This design creates a cascading Laguna that meanders through the site and along with garden pathways, links the central island amenities with the beach chalets and water bungalow clusters. Inspired by Islamic interior courtyards, elements include terraces for gathering and function as connections between buildings. Echoing local design principles, spaces feature garden areas, formal water features and palm roofs as peaceful retreats. Garden pathways also connect the resort and allow guests to wander with a sense of mindful connection to the island topography.

Cam Ranh Villas is one of two significant projects completed for the client, who has recently expanded into the land development business. The resort villa project is located on the Cam Ranh peninsula, just south of Nha Trang on the south central Vietnamese coast. The client was looking for an exceptional and unconventional design, incorporating a smaller lot format and featuring a rich and varied public realm strategy. The concept features an organic and relaxed layout, with a distribution of open space to envelop discreet
neighbourhoods. A central open space spine and numerous landscape and road linkages provide community connection to the beach. The retained natural hill invokes the sand dune topography typical of the area and sets up spectacular ocean views for the high-end villas. A Community Club with extensive waterbased recreation, provides a central place for the community away from the beach. A 4-star resort hotel, a regional retail centre and condominium apartment complete the program.

Dubai Marina is one of the most successful land development projects in the Gulf Region and set a new standard for high-density, lifestyle development in the Middle East. It was also the first project in the UAE to allow foreign ownership of property. The vision for this 550 hectare project along Jumeira Beach in Dubai was to bring the waters of the Gulf into the site, creating a new waterfront community. Prime development sites were distributed around an excavated waterway with a continuous minimum 10-metre wide, 7-kilometer long promenade designed as public recreational open space. The marina waterway and the beachfront serve as the principal public spaces. To solve a wide variety of design issues on the site, the major roads and boulevards in the development, are built at a higher elevation than the marina promenade and the surrounding land. Raising the grade of the roads made use of fill material excavated from the marina and provided the grade differential for bridge crossings and two levels of structured parking below the grade of the perimeter roads, but above the high water table. The original master plan for Dubai Marina was designed by Robert Marshall, Global Director of Planning & Landscape at B+H, while at HOK. Tom Hook and Eddie Wu, Principals with B+H Planning & Landscape also worked on the Dubai Marina Master Plan while at HOK.

The InterContinental Hotel invited HOK to submit a design proposal to inspire the hotel’s transition to a mixed-use resort destination and serve the region’s growing focus on tourism. Our proposal recommends intensifying the existing five-star hotel, restaurant and marina facilities with a mixed-use waterfront development that includes a climate controlled public promenade/colonnade, linking the hotel to recreational facilities and a private beach. The 54,895-square-foot retail and restaurant area along the colonnade will wrap around the Marina from the Beach Club, connecting the new facilities to the hotel, the proposed apartment residences and an adjacent Garden Villa Community. Four residential buildings are arranged around the Marina basin and vary in ascending height, stepping up to the existing hotel in a crescendo pattern that creates individual addresses and maximizes views of the Marina and Gulf.

Opening Doors OpenWays has developed a line‑busting solution that removes the frustration associated with traditional hotel check-in. Offering a Mobile Key that is securely sent over the air to a traveling guest’s mobile phone prior to arrival at the hotel not only removes the need to stop at the front desk, but it alleviates any stress the traveler may feel anticipating delays and long waits at their destination hotel.

Millennials are not a Western demographic (as perhaps Boomers were) but one that is pervasive across the planet. Millennials come from every continent and constitute an extremely large market particularly in emerging markets such as India, China, the Middle East and South America. This demographic is emerging and burgeoning with its own set of unique and challenging opportunities for the hospitality sector. The following are some key trends across the hospitality industry which distinctly demonstrate the coming impact of the millennial demographic on the boutique hotel market.
Authenticity Travelers today have an increasing thirst for knowledge and learning. They are seeking authentic experiences. Cooking, art & culture, and other special interest themes are gaining attention, as are destinations that protect the environment and endangered species.

There is a shift in wealth from the west to east.
It’s not a spa; it’s an “all-wellness” property, designed around the four pillars of healthy living: eating well, exercising, rest and productivity. According to IHG, the fitness centre is “not an afterthought, but the hallmark of the brand.” EVEN will provide food regime, wellness experts and coat racks that morph into pull up bars.

Meditation Retreats Mind Matters Consumers have caught on to mindful vacations that offer mental restoration. Practices learned on a trip can be incorporated at home to help manage stress, improve cognitive capacity and maintain emotional equilibrium.
Hotel or Hospital? There is a rising trend among international hospitals to provide “medihotels” for their traveling clients. In lodgings and accommodations owned and managed by the hospital and located close to the treatment venue, patients and their companions can enjoy the safety, convenience, and amenities of staying close to their medical centre of choice. These lifestyle-equipped facilities offer home-style comfort for longer stays.
Definition of Boutique Line breaks: bou | tique Pronunciation: [boo:teek], noun The word boutique infers a bespoke guest experience based on highly personalized service due to the limtied number of guests. Generally it is deemed to be small hotels under 150 rooms, however the definition is transforming to meet the expectations of a new generation of millennial travellers.

“The postmodern consumer’s search for experiences that are engaging, personable, memorable - and above all, authentic is especially strong in tourism.” UNWTO Tourism
More than ever hotel guests desire personalized service. For the boutique hotel market this is the number one reason why boutique hotels are selected over the larger main line hotels. Some may argue new technology depersonalizes the unique experience of a boutique hotel, however we have found the integration of new technology frees the hotel associates up to actually spend more effort and focus ensuring guests’ experiences are personalized, exceptional and memorable. With the millennial demographic in particular, boutique hotels’ biggest marketing rewards are born out of social media.

Authenticity Millenials come from every continent on our planet yet they all have a common goal for travelling. They travel to have real experiences of other places. Millennials are forward-looking and unlike previous generations of travelers they want to understand the heritage of a place. Most importantly, they want to experience the current cultural diversity of every location they travel to and if the experience starts with their hotel, they will remember and recommend their experience more highly. Boutique hotels should now provide bespoke experiences to millennial guests by integrating strong cultural ties to each property and city they are in.
