WE ASKED:
What role does landscape play in the urban environment? “
An integral component of lively and active urban settings, landscape elements elevate the quality of our experience within the public realm. By creating spaces where people want to live, work, rest and play, landscape architecture encourages life between buildings and engagement through elements that promote connection between people and places.

Landscape will also provide added value through performance factors to enhance how an overall plan will respond to social, economic and environmental objectives. Through accessibility to larger scale active spaces, communities will experience an increase in overall health and well-being.

How landscape informs urban spaces
13
THERE ARE A myriad of activities that get us outside as we go about our day-to-day lives. Finding our way to and from work, running errands, getting our shopping done - we likely don’t pay much attention to our surroundings as we take part in these routine happenings. Regardless of the built environment around us, these activities will take place. Then there are the things we do because we want to be outside and we have the time and energy to invest in them. Taking a walk to get some fresh air, grabbing a seat in the local park to watch the world go by, or getting active and participating in a sport – these are results of our mindful decisions to engage with the outdoor environment.
Creative landscape planning and architecture impacts us in ways that we may not be consciously aware of. Even when we’re going about our daily routine, we’re unknowingly affected by what is present and missing in our outdoor urban spaces. Research shows that the addition of natural elements to an urban landscape contributes greatly to users’ well-being, safety and
enjoyment. The addition of natural landscape elements - to both our indoor and outdoor spaces - change how we enjoy the activities we participate in and how we interact with others within them. When these elements are lacking, we’re likely to see far less interaction, enjoyment and engagement between people and places within a city.
When we choose to go outside, we make the conscious choice to interact with our surroundings and participate in activities that add to our quality of life. Where we see others congregating and socializing is often where we want to be. By creating spaces that encourage engagement with nature and other people, we create opportunities to retreat to spaces of natural refuge within what can be otherwise lifeless spaces in an urban setting. Spaces that create this type of refuge infuse life into the urban fabric of our cities to inspire a greater sense of health and well-being.
“
Compelling landscape planning and architecture contributes greatly to the public realm and makes the difference between getting outside simply because we have to and getting out because we truly want to enjoy our exterior environment. EDDIE WU Principal + Director of Landscape Architecture.

CLIMATE CHANGE WILL PLAY AN INCREASINGLY PIVOTAL ROLE IN DESIGN INNOVATION. Sustainability in landscape planning isn’t new. Environments can vary from well below freezing to tropical temperatures and so will have to incorporate sustainable landscape appropriate to their respective climates and microclimates. The same principle applies when considering landscape in the face of climate change. Current landscape architecture is moving beyond simply understanding existing climate challenges. Allowing for possible future extreme weather conditions, landscape elements must now be sustainable and resilient beyond what may be expected. This would include conditions of drought and flood as well as extreme temperatures.

OPEN + ACTIVE SPACES ENCOURAGE ACTIVE AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLES. A key component of the response to growing expectations within the public realm, open outdoor spaces must be visually captivating, inviting and useable. The function and placement of pedestrian spaces contribute to the health of users and the community. Landscape elements that promote safe pedestrian movement, activity and enjoyment contribute to an added value proposition in urban planning.

When we anticipate what our clients need and ask the right questions, we can pair that knowledge with emerging market trends to keep up with the pulse of innovation in landscape architecture and raise the bar on design.
LANDSCAPE ELEMENTS CONTRIBUTE ADDED VALUE TO AN OVERALL PLAN. Key performance factors in design are shifting to include how specific landscape elements contribute to achieving overall economic, social and environmental objectives. For instance, the maintenance costs of urban trees are often recouped through their benefits in energy savings, CO2 absorption, air quality benefits and aesthetics. Appropriate landscape can also decrease the frequency of accidents and improve well-being by creating safer ways for people to get around. Landscape elements are being held to increasingly higher standards and expectations in terms of latent added value and performance.

Our Approach to
Landscape Design AS YOU WANDER A CITY, you may not consider the function of the greenery, building facades, bike lanes or open green spaces around you within the context of your walk. Visionary landscape design anticipates how you experience the outdoors, down to every last detail. It aims to be accessible and through its accessibility, reinforces a sense of place within your immediate context and for the community as a whole. At B+H, we believe that inspiring, foundational and long-lasting design doesn’t skip a beat. Every individual design element must contribute to, and improve upon, the original vision while meeting key fixed objectives.
THE NARRATIVE OF DESIGN. Justifiable and compelling design is a collective effort and begins with a story. The narrative consists of our client’s brand, vision and objectives cohesively merged with economic, social, environmental and cultural sensitivities. To develop the story further, we’ll work collaboratively with our clients, urban designers, planners, architects and consultant teams to understand more about how we want users to experience, respond to, and engage with, their environment and which amenities are required. When we have the opportunity to integrate landscape with building architecture and interior design, we can see a deeper and more distinct overall design coherence.
18
Resort Landscape Design Philosophy
PRISTINE SANDY BEACHES. The gentle ocean breeze. Salty air and sun-filled days. Our visions of ideal vacation getaways can often include these specific elements but specify nowhere in particular. Dedicated to crafting authentic and unique travel experiences, the place-makers at B+H take a careful approach to resort design. Creating additional value for vacation real estate properties begins by understanding how to engage and enlighten guests. At B+H, we collaborate closely with global hotel brands and operators to create memorable guest experiences through suites and a rich array of spaces and amenities that meet the practical needs of owners, staff, and guests. We design facilities that build upon guests’ anticipation of their experience, from the moment they arrive, through to their departure and subsequent return.
INTEGRATED APPROACHES CREATE COHESIVE DESIGNS. An experienced design and consulting firm that offers world-class planning, architecture, landscape, and interior expertise, we create whole solutions. Offering these services as a greater whole, rather than simply the sum of its parts, creates valuable synergies and efficiencies. Every design challenge requires a unique solution and our integrated design approach allows us to hone in on distinctive points of differentiation for every development and every client – in every location.
We blend planning, architecture, and landscape elements with qualities of the local land, culture, climate, and site orientation. The result is the creation of destinations that are unique, inspiring, and contextual. Our approach to each resort project is to complement its context without overwhelming it, establishing positive connections between people and their surroundings for destinations that guests remember, dream about, and freely recommend to their family and friends.

We originally presented the client with three design concepts for Hoi An Marriott in Vietnam - each featuring a distinctive configuration of landscape elements. The preferred option places emphasis on incorporating as much native greenery as possible and creating a garden feel throughout the resort. Views of the water from the rooms are enhanced through a thoughtful plan that avoids placing trees along main view corridors.
HOI AN MARRIOTT Location Quang Nam Province, Vietnam Size 10 hectares Status Design Development Client Marriott Hotels & Resorts
Hoi An Marriott features a stretch of exclusive beachfront that sits along open ocean area. With the aim of mitigating less than ideal water conditions during inclement weather and maximizing beach time for guests, an elevated sandbank was added to increase the depth of the beach and act as a buffer. Other water activities on the resort include main, family, and quiet pools. A meandering lazy creek runs through the site, connecting spaces and amenities. Further connections are made to surrounding local attractions to engage guests with the local culture. A host of rich amenities cater to the needs of the resort’s range of guests, which include mostly families and couples looking for short and long-term accommodations.

DOUBLETREE BY HILTON HA LONG BAY HOTEL Location Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
Forming a seascape of limestone pillars along the northeast coast of Vietnam, Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our architecture, and planning and landscape teams worked collaboratively to design this two-tower development including hotel and residential suites complete with retail space, a casino, conference amenities, and complementary landscape design. Built on an existing hill fronting the Ha Long Bay, this DoubleTree By Hilton development is tucked into the landform creating a strong sense of place and reflecting the natural beauty of the surrounding land and foothills. Thoughtful incorporation of terracing and banding throughout the landscape design interprets the local contours of the terra and is reminiscent of local rice paddy fields. The natural and memorable flow patterns and organic forms throughout the landscape design connect the site to the mountainous region directly to the north and work as a clever wayfinding tactic. The elevated terracing and natural sloping of the site lead guests progressively to their arrival at the entry and guide them along their subsequent travels through the resort. Terraced promenades also work to connect the resort to its surrounding context by acting as easy connections to public amenities situated across the street. Furthering the feeling of connection on the site is a main pool that is extended along the length of the resort featuring an engaging edge that links to the activity at the podium.

The landscape design of the Pullman Phu Quoc Hotel Resort reflects the Pullman brand principles and local aesthetic. Overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, the resort offers guests a unique experience as a gateway to an island oasis. This impressive experience unfolds as guests make their way through the resort, beginning with their arrival at the main entry. Passing cascading water features, they meander along garden pathways that lead them to their rooms. The resort experience continues to unfold as guests wander through an organic landscape design that mirrors the curved form of the resort’s architecture.
PULLMAN PHU QUOC HOTEL RESORT Location Phu Quoc, Kien Giang, Vietnam
A rich program of amenities appeals to the young professionals and families Pullman is looking to attract including a central open event space, several pools, Jacuzzis, and kid’s play areas. A deep site, this escape is designed as an ‘island within an island’ to address the fact that the further inland guests move on the site, the farther they move from the ocean. The central pool is designed as a floating island in the middle of the resort, complete with a relaxing beach front. Waterways that weave through shared outdoor spaces contribute to the beach experience from anywhere on the grounds. To mitigate privacy issues of the main beach area being partly accessible by the public, smaller ‘islands’ are built along the beach front to act as a buffer.

The podium roof gardens are designed with flexibility to allow for the creation of small outdoor rooms containing a mix of both formal and informal spaces, and to provide a beautiful focal point for overlook from hotel suites.

Tucked away in Great Exuma, Catch A Fire is a popular tourist destination. A restaurant hotspot that has been renovated over the years with additional buildings and amenities, our client was interested in expanding to create an eco-resort. A deep site with changes in topography, the landscape design uses the nuances of the land to create a secluded haven. Sustainability became the prime driver of design and key elements include sourcing from local suppliers, preserving a natural look and feel, and taking a responsible approach to energy resources and consumption.
CATCH A FIRE RESORT Location Exuma, The Bahamas
Inspired by Bob Marley and the Rastafarian culture, this oceanfront plan incorporates villas and pools that are tucked into nature - the existing vegetation and terrain. Inspired by the beauty of nature, details play with vivid colouring. Villa placement is carefully plotted to ensure a unique setting for each. A small site, villas are situated to maximize space and views while allowing for the privacy guests would expect from a boutique eco-resort. The top levels of the resort’s two-level villas embrace treetop views, while ground levels focus on taking guests into the lushness of the local planting. Taking cues from the native form of the land, the resort’s landscape design displays an integrated approach by blending nature with design.

The design for the Lusail Thai Island, as a fusion between the two cultures, draws its inspiration from the rich and vibrant Thai culture and blissful nature, blended with the very essence of Qatar traditional hospitality. Comprised of 200 rooms, 100 private chalets and bungalows, and public amenities, this landmark project incorporates different types of luxury resort facilities within the beauty of the island’s natural topography. Working closely with the client, B+H Planning and Landscape explored the ways in which the resort could best respond to the needs of guests to provide the level of shelter, privacy, and luxury expected.
LUSAIL THAI ISLAND Location Lusail, Qatar Size 2,902,940 ft2 | 269,692 m2 Status Completed in 2015 Client IDCC
The resort’s landscape design complements its architecture and revolves around the use of xeriscape, making it ideal for the local arid climate and blending seamlessly with the context of the surrounding land. Through thoughtful planning, landscape, and built form, we employed a holistic approach to create an elegant, sustainable, and functionally organized solution. To accommodate the number of guest accommodations required, all services are tucked under the raised level of the central island, leaving the grounds free for the guesthouse amenities and gardens. This design creates a cascading Laguna that meanders through the site and along with garden pathways, links the central island amenities with the beach chalets and water bungalow clusters. Inspired by Islamic interior courtyards, elements include terraces for gathering and function as connections between buildings. Echoing local design principles, spaces feature garden areas, formal water features and palm roofs as peaceful retreats. Garden pathways also connect the resort and allow guests to wander with a sense of mindful connection to the island topography.

Cam Ranh Villas is one of two significant projects completed for the client, who has recently expanded into the land development business. The resort villa project is located on the Cam Ranh peninsula, just south of Nha Trang on the south central Vietnamese coast. The client was looking for an exceptional and unconventional design, incorporating a smaller lot format and featuring a rich and varied public realm strategy. The concept features an organic and relaxed layout, with a distribution of open space to envelop discreet neighbourhoods. A central open space spine and numerous landscape and road linkages provide community connection to the beach. The retained natural hill invokes the sand dune topography typical of the area and sets up spectacular ocean views for the high-end villas. A Community Club with extensive water-based recreation, provides a central place for the community away from the beach. A 4-star resort hotel, a regional retail centre and condominium apartment complete the program.

DUBAI MARINA LANDSCAPE (PHASE1) Location Dubai, UAE Size 12 hectares Status Completed in 2004 Client Emaar Properties PJSC (Project completed by team members while at HOK)
The Landscape Podium Plan provides a guide for refining the social and natural environment of Dubai Marina. It is based on three basic principles. First, the landscape will serve as the unifying element connecting the disparate spaces created by the varying building volumes. Second, the landscape will mitigate the heights and scale of the towers - creating a series of spaces with a human scale. Third, the landscape provides a variety of spaces providing an opportunity for a multiplicity of activities that will be both passive and active. Based on these principles, treatment of the landscape focused on the development of the outdoor roof or canopy, certain water features, walls and paving, and planting. These features were developed as a means to crystalize the Dubai Marina development as the premium resort community in the Middle East.

Playing a pivotal role in social change on many levels, the center’s design reflects its importance both inside and out. The project has evolved significantly from the original planning report—specifically in that the site moved to another location. Along with the change in location was the fact that the site’s shape changed and nearly doubled in size, all demanding different zoning requirements. It was important to retain the original primary design concepts in the landscape architecture despite all the changes required. B+H Planning and Landscape used
the exterior space of the center to reflect natural form and elements native to the area. Using desert, gorge, valley and water as key components of the campus landscape design, natural landform, rock strata and geometric elements in the exterior environment create clearly-defined meeting spaces and connections. Central squares, courtyards, community gardens, and pedestrian links span across the campus, connecting buildings and creating a sense of space and community. A strong sense of security and safety is created through the installation of perimeter walls and gardens.

The revitalization of an existing linear park in Ho Chi Minh City, the new
SEPTEMBER 23RD PARK Location Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Size 10 Hectares Status In Progress Client Cuu Long Investment Commercial Company Limited
September 23RD Park transforms this space into not only a regenerated outdoor urban amenity space but also a symbolic expression of the independence of the people of Vietnam. Inspired by the resolve, strength, and rebirth that the lotus flower symbolizes for the local culture, special moments are carefully orchestrated to reflect a strong symbolic identity for the people of Vietnam. Distinct event zones are created by weaving the land form with a large rangeof activity and amenity spaces to create a memorable destination within the city. Located at the heart of the park is the theatre, outdoor amphitheatre, underground
retail and supermarkets, and two levels of public parking. Wide, curving pedestrian boulevards, lined with shade trees and public art, connect elements such as a 360-degree media screen, children’s amusement areas and playgrounds, a tropical botanical garden, and clustered retail pavilions. These active features are complemented by a rooftop garden and expansive grass lawns for relaxing and connecting with nature. The park’s west community plaza is home to a reflecting pool, additional retail, and a bus terminal drop-off. The park design culminates with a civic memorial designed to reflect a strong sense of civic pride for locals and international visitors.

ABUJA CITY CENTRE Location Abuja, Nigeria Client Eagle Hills
City Centre Abuja is a new high-density urban residential community located at the heart of the government axis running through the City. The site is surrounded by several national cultural institutions as well as government offices, and it aligns through the axis of the central park with the National Assembly Building, and in the distance with the landmark ASO Rock. Using a variety of landscape design strategies, the objectives for the Central Park development are focused on three primary issues: place making, connections to the community, and the development of amenities and attractions. Design strategies include a focus on bio-diversity; using circulation systems as a critical part of the design; programing that is flexible and appeals to all ages and users; incorporating public art into the fabric and amenities in the park; and, using water as a community amenity.

BLUEWATERS Location Dubai, UAE Size 10 Hectares Status Completed in 2013 Client Meraas Holding
The planning approach to the Blue Waters Island residential development is centred on creating a clear spatial distinction and hierarchy between the private residential zone, semi-private areas accessible to residents and visitors, and the transition to the public dedicated zones. Combined with the strategic clustering of building types and resulting interstitial spaces, the creation of three primary neighbourhoods based on bodies of water and their intrinsic properties defined the landscaped exterior realm. As with the primary planning moves, the landscape design has been carefully structured to provide a legible hierarchy of space - from the animated public streetscape, to the semi-private waterfront walk, to the private residential environments. Each of these spaces has been carefully programmed for use to relate to the nature of the corresponding building and context.

DUBAI FESTIVAL CITY LANDSCAPE Location Dubai, UAE Size 25 Hectares Status Completed in 2004 Client Dubai Festival City (Al-Futtaim Group)
Dubai Festival City is a premiere mixed use and lifestyle destination for the region designed with a close connection to the historic and symbolic Dubai Creek. Arranged in a multi-zone configuration, the overall Festival City development offers a wide range of uses including residential, office, retail, convention centre, entertainment and hospitality facilities that are complimented with generous open spaces, golf course amenities and a signature waterfront promenade. At the core of the development, Zone 8 contains the central retail and entertainment attraction within the site, designed to bring people back to the water. As such, the open spaces around the creek, including the waterfront promenade, marina boardwalk with feature cabanas, and covered recreation canal
with multileveled terraces, extend into the retail and hospitality spaces to create continuity between the water and land. In doing so, a seamless integration between the outdoor and indoor spaces is created. Distinctive character zones are created as part of the retail strategy which relate to the natural landscape narrative in the region. Water features along the retail gallerias create an ideal microclimate to support a comfortable retail environment, entrance features and promenade connections are highlighted with signature gateway elements to mark entry points, and a strategic signature/ wayfinding and art strategy is used to create a sense of cohesive connectivity between the entire development as one destination.

The Dubai International Business Park Master Plan relies on the strategic use of the landscape and public space to form the backbone of the development in order to create a livable urban environment which supports the integrated mix of business complexes, residential communities and hospitality sectors on site. The inspiration behind the public space planning was to arrange the open space components with a careful functional connectivity in order to support the success and vibrancy of the larger development. The approach
behind the landscape design was to create a series of character zones, each developed with a specific amenity programme and spatial quality relating to the adjacent building blocks. In doing so, the various areas of the plan are identifiable as distinctive zones of activity. The retail strategy and mix of uses within the Master Plan was established around the public space system as a way to enrich the active use of these outdoors spaces and promote the social integration of the entire community.
