OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts is one of Canada’s leading hotel and resort management companies, with over 20 hotels across the country. One of their properties, the Regina Inn, was in need of a massive renovation; it would become the first DoubleTree by Hilton in Canada. DoubleTree by Hilton is a fast-growing global collection of more than 350 upscale hotels in gateway cities, metropolitan areas and vacation destinations across six continents. Combining SilverBirch’s desire for a fun environment with DoubleTree by Hilton’s inspired and rewarding brand was the ultimate objective of the project. The renovations included the entire hotel, from lobby, reception, restaurant, ballrooms, guestrooms, fitness area and conference center to exterior façade work. This meant closing the existing hotel for an 11-month construction period.
41
CONCEPT
Our inspiration for the Doubletree by Hilton Regina draws heavily on a rich sense of place. Regina has historically been known as a centre for agricultural business and more recently for oil and natural gas, which contributes greatly to the local economy. It is this rich history as the centre of a Prairie industry, as well as its location in the middle of the Canadian Plains, that drives our concept.
The balance between what Regina was and what it is becoming is demonstrated through the striking juxtaposition of old and new in the public areas. With a colour palette derived from the open sky and fields of wheat, carefully selected unique pieces of furniture embody the hotel’s rural and rustic surroundings while maintaining an overall contemporary feel. In addition, a more modern approach is achieved by pairing these historical pieces with slicker upholstery and streamlined chairs. This modern twist on a rich history is carried through into the guest corridors and rooms, in which the blue and ochre colours continue, lending a more solid, masculine feel to the space. Warm wood tones, mixed with classic furniture styling create an inviting and reassuring summation of a property that is destined to continue as a landmark Regina hotel.

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
Establishing a strong presence within the city that was inkeeping with the iconic status of the hotel was the primary challenge with this project. Our approach was to pay homage to the city and the surrounding areas while addressing the need for a more contemporary and business orientated establishment to speak to the growing demands of Regina’s cultural evolution.
Planning challenges arose as a part of creating a more unified Food & Beverage outlet. The existing hotel initially had three separate lounges and restaurants spread throughout the lobby level; these presented staffing challenges and contributed to an identity crisis. One single space incorporating a bar, lounge and restaurant with immediate access to the back of house and kitchen was the beginning of a process that challenged many floor plan options. The culmination of the design is a dynamic and bustling space now called the Wild Sage Kitchen & Bar, which succeeds by serving as a semi-transparent lounge drawing guests in from the lobby, a day-to-night bar and a large and comfortable restaurant with a buffet enclosed in the back.
44
PROCESS The process began with the first site visit in May 2011, when we assessed the property and the client’s needs and hopes for the new hotel. We began the in-depth planning analysis for establishing new restaurant spaces, a new conference center and a new reception area. As many new design details began to take shape, we also began our concept work on the mock-up room design: forming a direction for the colour pallete, casegood design and bathroom transformations. Shortly thereafter, many exterior studies progressed, focusing on a new colour scheme, a new Porte Cochiere and entry door as well as parking and arrival. After defining directions for all areas, time was spent creating a hotel that both SilverBirch and Doubletree could celebrate with pride.
RESULTS “As the city continues its growth in the telecommunications, agriculture, oil and natural gas industries, Regina has seen a heightened need for first-rate accommodations and conference facilities,” said Mike Wurster, General Manager of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel and Conference Centre Regina. “We look forward to meeting this growing demand with our tremendous hotel and meeting offerings, as well as staff eager to provide the highest level of service.”
