It’s been an A+ effort and the results speak volumes. Until now every architect I’ve met believes they have the best idea in the world. They should all go back to school and unlearn that attitude. B+H is different. There’s no hierarchy, we all came into the room as equals and the results exceeded all expectations. We all felt we’d contributed and it has led to a lot of good things in the last nine months. - MATTHEW LAI, CHIEF DESIGN OFFICER NEXT STORY GROUP

2 ADVANCE STRATEGY
ADVANCE STRATEGY FUTURE PROOFING TO RESPOND FLEXIBLY TO innovation & CHANGE Unprecedented change-drivers, impacting all sectors of the global economy, are demanding change from design and construction organizations as well. Convergence across these sectors – talent acquisition, the creation of digital and big data platforms and transition to a distributed network business model create significant business opportunities. Understanding and exploring these possibilities can provide the potential to leapfrog competitors – that’s where we come in.
Work The emergence of new technologies - AI, BIM and visualization (VR/AR) are transforming how our sector works in a fundamental way – we can help you re-think the work environment and the create of new space typologies that will drive productivity, attract talent and support exciting new ways of working.
People The professionals and staff who will fully leverage these new technologies are from generations that are working in new ways – demonstrably 16 B+H ADVANCE STRATEGY
different from their predecessor generations. From our work with leading technology innovators we know what these people are looking for and can provide solutions that will help you attract, retain and – most importantly – engage the talent you rely on for competitive advantage.
Culture Culture is the most important element of any strategy and notoriously tends to lag behind change. Through leadership, stakeholder and user engagement, we will help you identify elements of a compelling future culture and interpret it in your space to drive the engagement that will in turn result in powerful organizational performance. New kinds of cultural, collaborative and social spaces provide a platform for the new culture to take flight and soar. This is the essence of the work we do with clients, whether they be cancer researchers, game developers, healthcare providers, technologists or global internet retailers. We help our clients see the emergent future.
“The future is already here…it just isn’t very evenly distributed.” William Gibson.
Welcome to Advance Strategy! There are many firms that design beautiful spaces. Assigned with the task to design, most firms do just that – and only that. Our approach is different. Our successful approach to uncovering design that fulfills real user needs and expectations is embedded in our Advance Strategy practice. As a global, award-winning firm with more than 60 years of legacy, we have established a niche in creating high-performance and impactful workplaces for many high-tech client firms including Microsoft in Redmond, Suzhou, Shanghai and Beijing; Amazon in Seattle and Singapore; Google in Canada; Alibaba, Tencent Group and Huawei in China. Advance Strategy is about getting to a deeper understanding of our clients’ current and anticipated business contexts. We have a suite of unique tools and processes that engage our clients in a deep discussion of their unique expectations and requirements – often revealing unexpected opportunities to do more with less. Through a process of research, analysis and scenario development we provide weighted options and recommendations that allow you to determine the optimum value of your investment.
Translating Standards into Realities As ”Workplace Strategy Translators”, we will work with our Client to interpret and transform the your corporate workplace standards into the reality of a functioning office. Focusing on people, we design healthy and technology-enabled workplaces that facilitate a diverse range of work styles and preferences, encourage movement throughout the day, provide opportunities for collaboration that reflect the desired culture, and empower employees so they feel inspired and remain engaged. Understanding the user experience is the key to unlocking Client’s competitive advantage in the industry – translating into increased performance and productivity, and cementing the firm’s position as the employer of choice in Singapore & Asia.
Forward-thinking Approach
Within today’s highly globalized world and rapid pace of innovation, there is simply no way to accurately predict what the future holds. What we promise you is a workspace and building design that will address your future needs through its existing flexibility – design that will not only stand the test of time but enables Client to actualize its corporate motto of striving to “Be What’s Next”. Our forward-thinking approach asks tough questions early in the process, where there are more opportunities to create solutions that outperform. Better processes equal better results.
Optimized Benchmarking within Budgets We don’t design to static budgets alone. We design to the optimized business solution – which of course includes budget targets – but also key operational benchmarks, user experience expectations – all the measures that drive valueby leveraging the pennies of real estate costs against the significant human resources costs of a successful, growing enterprise. Our Advance Strategy tools are designed to “predict” the key performance indicators andwhen we design to those parameters, we meet - and beat – budgets. Every time.
Global footprints with local experience Working from 10 studios globally, our team members are committed to responding to the needs of clients and transforming spaces, communities, and economies. In every locality we are in, we combine strategic thinking, bold design, and advanced technology with the creative, human energy of our interdisciplinary and multigenerational team. Our crosspollinating staff strategy has ensured that lessons learned are shared around our global studios including Singapore. We have garnered rich local experience with the recent completion of interior design for two Amazon offices in Singapore, corporate office interiors for Beyonics - a precision engineering, industrial warehousing business; as well as the corporate offices and lobby interiors in all the Singapore hospital projects we are involved in. They include the Changi General Hospital Integrated Building (launched in 2015) and Medical Centre (under construction); as well as the National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore (under construction). 2 ADVANCE STRATEGY Data not Diva We have a mantra at B+H that is a constant reminder that the best design is about delivering a superior user experience. Our visioning sessions include visual tools like our Culture Cards and our Disruptor Game – analog tools that stimulate participation, engagement and interaction and always lead to insightful discoveries – for us and our clients. We also benchmark global trends measuring employee density and support metrics. These are key drivers in determining efficiency and appropriateness of final real estate decisions which impact employee productivity and wellbeing. It is important as well to gain a deep understanding on statistics unique to our Client. It’s data, not diva.
People-Centric Design We are acutely aware of two major factors influencing workplace design; technological (innovations allowing higher mobility) and generational (millennial’s collaborative work habits). These two factors have allowed something incredible to happen... workplace is no longer specifically a PLACE. It is a STATE OF BEING or focus. Knowledge workers are working from anywhere (home, cafe, pub, park, lunchroom, teaming zones, conference rooms, work stations, hotel rooms, etc.) Design is only a part of what makes a space great. We think about how users will interact in the space, ultimately achieving client objectives. And we ask questions like, “How do we increase the well-being of employees at work?”, “How do we motivate and excite employees?”, “How can we enhance branding of the firm through design?”, “What is the WOW factor for the firm’s employees, clients and partners?”. At B+H Advance Strategy, user experience is at the forefront of our design because at the end of the day, it is all about the people.
18 B+H ADVANCE STRATEGY
In our experience, when you design to meet budget objectives, projects come in on budget and add more value for each dollar spent.

3 EXPERIENCE DESIGN
EXPERIENCE DESIGN overview The best experience is something you may not notice until you get home. Recall how it feels to be lost – unable to find your way to the restroom, walking round and round the block looking for the building entrance, panicking about whether you’re on the right train platform? Everything we do is designed to eliminate that sense of frustration, confusion and worry and send you happily on your way. Experience Design is a blend of art, architecture, interior and graphic design that combine to create intuitive, navigable environments. Our work is to communicate information in a way that empowers the user. Our goal is to keep you oriented in your surroundings and infuse the space with a sense of brand and that reminds you why you’re there. Great design is a seamless, immersive experience – not a visual treasure hunt.
20 B+H ADVANCE STRATEGY
Navigation Everyone navigates differently. Our challenge is to create an environmental experience that works for a variety of user groups. Signage is the most common and explicit tool used to indicate location. A sign that shows where to pay, order food or give direction is a typical indicator, yet explicit methods run into challenges such as language barriers and cultural unfamiliarity that inhibit their usefulness. A more universal method of providing location information is implicit communication. Landmarks and color are more nuanced ways to mark location. They provide a sense of place based on visual cues without relying on language or making assumptions about meaning. A canopy above a building entrance says, “Hey, here’s the entrance” in every language.
How it’s done The best experiences combine both implicit and explicit references. Places should be easy to find without an excess use of signage. More subtly, the place should express an individual sense of identity through implicit references such as color, typeface or artifacts unique to culture and brand. Experience Design carries the essence of a brand’s identity in its DNA. When we do our work well, we empower people to move easily through complex, action-packed, high traffic environments (like subways, hospitals, train stations and airports) without experiencing stress or frustration. Great design removes the tension and negativity associated with uncertainty and confusion and instead allows you to confidently choose the path from A to B
We Get it Our design team gets it. We’ve all stood in your shoes and experienced frustration and confusion. We’ve spent years noticing what makes a difference, identifying the attributes of space that create frictionless, enjoyable experiences.
We’re passionate about finding ways to mix art and design in a brand expression that visually communicates why you’re here and where you want to go. We want you to enjoy the journey – and it may not be until you get home that you stop and think, “well, that was easy!”
Great design is a seamless, immersive experience – not a visual treasure hunt.

Design Team cohesiveness, social and cultural connection is at the heart of this Turn-10 studios project. Gaming software projects often take up to 2 years to develop and require over 150 people. Designers were challenged to come up with a creative, professional space that makes groups
of 150+ people feel like a single, cohesive team. Spatial layout was constructed to encourage people to travel between floors and connect in a central gathering space. Visitors are greeted by an inspiring entrance expressing the company’s brand featuring authentic race cars.

design GE Meadowvale demonstrates how a strategic process can establish design decisions based on sound business strategy. GE asked us to refresh their existing space to appeal to the future generations they rely upon recruiting and retaining as they transform into a digital manufacturing company competing with high profile tech companies. We engaged leadership to explore their business and main drivers in ways that
most architects don’t. From our findings, we built a scorecard against which we measured potential solutions; one being the original refresh idea, while others included redeveloping the site and, at the far extreme, selling the building and moving closer to their talent base. Through our assessment, GE decided to sell and move closer to their talent. For us, this meant we no longer had a design project, but our strategy ensured that our client is doing the right thing, in the right place. Two years later, we’re talking to them about designing their new space in a neighborhood closer to the City.
