Safety at Every Step: Tips from Gardendale's Crossing Guards

Crossing Guards ensure the safety of children and other pedestrians as they cross the street before and after school. Crossing Guards check for oncoming traffic, step into the road, and direct vehicles to come to a stop before instructing people to cross.

Parents

Things the Gardendale Crossing Guards Want You to Know as You Drop Off or Pick Up Your Students

• Always follow the hand directions of the Crossing Guard when dropping off or picking up your student at their school.

• Allow your student to exit your vehicle only at the direction of the Crossing Guards.

• Please do not pick up your student on the side of the road for their safety and the safety of others.

• Always watch students that are walking after school as they cross at the crosswalks because they are not watching for you.

• Stay off your cell phones during drop off and pick up of your student.

• Drive slowly through the School zones during the drop off and pick up times each day school is in session.

Please report any violations of School Bus Passing Laws to the Gardendale Police Department (205) 631-8787 1309 Decatur Highway, Gardendale Alabama, 35071

20/

In this issue, we are launching a new regular feature, “My Gardendale,” where we hear from you about what makes this city such a special place. I couldn’t think of anyone better to launch that feature than Joe Stahlkuppe, who is a regular at the Gardendale Farmers Market and other locations. Joe has never met a stranger and immediately answered “the people.” I have to agree with Joe. The people here are just different.

Regardless of if you are a Gardendale native, like our cover ladies from Wildflower, Jennifer and Wendy, or a transplant, like me, Joe or our maker this month, Meghan Graham, you know it’s the people that make this area so special.

Despite the fact that Gardendale has become a much larger city with thriving businesses and an ever-growing population, it retains its small-town feel in many ways. The underlying current of community and neighbors helping each other is really unique to this city.

If you want to tell us what you love about the city, send me an email or give me a call. We are also looking for Kids Who Shine to profile in upcoming issues, along with our other regular features, so keep names coming for those as well.

Honey Grahams

Meghan Graham loves candles. She always has them burning all over her home and, she was a frequent shopper at local candle sellers until late last year.

One night while she was sleeping, her husband decided to order candle making supplies. As the items started rolling in, Meghan began to question him. He admitted he thought it would be a good hobby for the couple and they started playing around with making their own candles. After a few rounds of trial and error, they found formulas that worked and she started listing them for sale on her personal Facebook page, then set up a business page and things took off from there.

“What started as a hobby has turned into a small business,” Meghan said.

In addition to ordering the supplies, her husband came up with the name of the business, Honey Grahams, as a play off their last name.

Through the process of learning to make her own candles and research, Meghan learned that

she had not been handling her candles in the best ways. She found that you were supposed to trim your wicks after every burn, never burn a candle longer than four hours and choose the right sized candle for the space–using larger, multiple-wick candles for more scent perfusion in larger space. She tries to share her information with customers as she learns more about the candles she loves.

Currently, Honey Grahams candles and car air fresheners are sold on their Facebook page, at Ace of the South, KS Boutique and Blue Lotus. She has even created a signature fragrance for Ace of the South, named “Ace of the South,” and featuring the owner’s dog, Ace, on the label. The scent combination is a secret, but Meghan describes it as “amazing.”

Currently, Meghan is getting her fall scents ready and experimenting with some signature fragrances.

“Fall is my favorite time of year, so I have a ton of things planned for fall and Halloween,” Meghan said. She is selling dough-bowl candles in the shape of the state of Alabama, pumpkins and footballs already and has 16-oz skull jars in her basement, waiting for Halloween.

The fall scents will be available on her Facebook page soon, but don’t be surprised if the names are a little different.

“We love country music and television shows so a lot of our candles are named after songs,” Meghan said.

The company’s butterscotch and bourbon scented candle is named “Whiskey Glasses,” the “Train Station” candles are billed as being how popular “Yellowstone” character, Rip Wheeler smells, while “Cover Me Up” is a clean, cotton scent.

“The candles are named around us–what we love and what we do,” Meghan explained. “For 4th of July, my 6 year old was born on Memorial Day and his favorite thing in the world is Bomb Pops. I have an oil called “Firecracker Ice” and he wanted it to be his candle. We named it ‘Jase is the Bomb.’”

They have fun with the names, but Meghan doesn’t play around about the candles and scents that she produces. The candle’s smell and potency or “hot throw” as she says it is called in the industry is the most important thing.

“I want you to walk in and be like ‘Wow! What is that?’” Meghan said.

Local FOP quietly does good for community

The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) is recognized as the largest professional police organization in the United States. Made up of federal, state and local officers, the FOP takes pride in making their towns safer and providing support to the community on multiple levels. The FOP is also a wonderful resource for their own members, providing continuing education assistance and various other programs.

Gardendale is home to the North Jefferson County Lodge 59 of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP).

“As the name implies we are a fraternity that was organized in 1975, in Gardendale to support law enforcement officers. Our Lodge is part of the Alabama State Lodge and the National FOP. Our Lodge is more diverse than some lodges in that we have about 150 members with varying law enforcement experience. Some lodges only have members from a single agency. Municipal, Sheriff, Rail Road, and Fire Marshall,” according to James Vaughn, President of Lodge 59.

Philanthropy is of utmost importance to Lodge 59. They are heavily involved in supporting the CHIPS Center, located at Children’s Hospital of Alabama. The Children’s Hospital Intervention & Prevention Services (CHIPS) promotes healing for children that have been affected by suspected child abuse and neglect. Lodge 59 participates in the Magnolia Days Festival, in order to raise money for CHIPS. If you’ve noticed the Red Wagons at Children’s Hospital, chances are, Lodge 59 played a role in that.

Lodge 59 recently introduced a new Associate Membership, allowing community members the opportunity to become involved in the organization. Associate Members can assist law enforcement, act as community activists, be eligible for scholarships, receive public recognition, and provide support for their law enforcement community. If you are interested in this program, contact the lodge at lynnshobe@jeffersonstate.edu.

Beyond the Badge: The Gardendale Police Department

The Gardendale Police Department was created on July 7, 1955. Since its beginning to today, the members of the department work very diligently to provide professional law enforcement services to the citizens of Gardendale and maintain one of the lowest crime rates in Jefferson County covering over 23 sq mi and closing in on 20,000 residents, numerous businesses, hospitals and sports complex facilities. It is the mission of the Gardendale Police Department to safeguard the lives and property of the people we serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime, and to enhance public safety while working within the community to improve quality of life. Our mandate is to do so with honor and integrity, while at all times conducting ourselves with the highest ethical standards to promote public confidence in the police service.

As Chief of Police, I am honored to not only serve the City of Gardendale, but also the dedicated members of the Gardendale Police Department who care about the city they live in and serve in. Whether you are a resident or a visitor from out of town, you are a member of our community. We are most effective at working in partnership with our community to employ problem-solving strategies to address crime, safety, and quality of life issues through fairness, transparency, and impartiality.

The highly skilled members of this department understand the challenges of modern policing and will work tirelessly to serve this community. While the police department’s primary responsibility is reducing crime, it’s just as important to establish positive relationships with our community and businesses.

Our department is committed to providing the highest quality in public safety and professional policing services and ensuring a safe place to live and shop. We are dedicated to the values of Courtesy, Professionalism, and Dedication, and to maintaining public safety for our residents, businesses and visitors.

Wildflower offers gifts, painting and crafting

As a little girl, Jennifer Moore remembers coming to The Garden shopping center to buy shoes and other items. She loved the shopping center and vowed that she would one day have a store of her own in the complex. That dream became a reality earlier this year when she and her friend Wendy Erhart opened Wildflower.

“It was an idea that’s been brewing in my head since I was a kid,” Jennifer said. “I’ve always wanted to have a shop in The Garden and I finally had the opportunity to do so.”

“She just drug me along for the ride,” Wendy added with a laugh. “And I’m happy to go.”

Although the concept of the type of store she wanted changed, Jennifer finally decided to stick to what she and Wendy knew best.

“I wanted something that was art-centric and had handmade items,” Jennifer said. “We are a gift shop that sells plants and specialty coffees and teas. Pretty much everything is something you can gift to someone.”

Additionally, the two women decided they wanted to offer

painting and crafting classes for individuals who want to learn or as a fun night-out option.

Jennifer is a sculptor who has spent the last seven years as a high school art teacher and Wendy is an all-around crafter. Together, they teach classes in small wood decorations, macrame, painting and more. The classes are designed to be for anyone of any skill level.

“Anybody can do it,” Wendy said. “You can do it and it will be just as good as anybody else’s. The stuff we buy is not perfect–it’s distressed.”

While there is a class schedule listed, Wendy also wants

customers to bring any projects or items they like to them and they will try to help.

“We want to do whatever they want to do,” Wendy said. “If somebody comes to us with an interest, we can do that.”

“We want to be involved in the community aspect of things and be a place where people go to hang out and craft or paint or what-have-you,” Jennifer said.

One of the items for sale in the store is Prodigal Pottery, made by women affiliated with the King’s Home who are escaping domestic violence situations.

“We look for vendors that have a social message or are involved in something good,” Jennifer said.

Other items for sale in the shop include Bemele Candles, handsewn and handmade items from Stacy Phillips and tabletop concrete firepits and jewelry made by Riley Phillips, as well as private-labeled coffees and teas that are exclusive to the store. There are also houseplants, various artworks and vintage items for sale.

“People don’t have to go across town to buy a nice gift or a nice candle,” Jennifer said.

“That’s also what we thought about these paint parties,” Wendy explained. “You can go across town and do that, but we want you to be able to come here and do that. Some people don’t want to drive to the other side of 280 or Hoover or wherever.”

Joe Stahlkuppe

Visitors to the Gardendale Farmers Market or Gardendale Pickers likely know Joe Stahlkuppe. The singing, larger than life personality is often seen at those locations, giving away Bibles and providing support for his fellow local veterans. We asked why he chose to make Gardendale his home for the last 40 years.

“The people here are different,” he said simply. “They are giving. I meet a lot of people who say ‘I don’t want to take a Bible, but I have a lot of Bibles to give,’ and then they show up with Bibles for me to give away. I also think the generosity and genius of the people here make the difference. There are some really smart people in Gardendale who really think about things before they act. The people here are here because they want to be there.”

Stahlkuppe said he likes the local churches and the local businesses, often being greeted by name when he enters them during his weekly errands.

“People treat people right,” Stahlkuppe said. “I feel at home in Gardendale, and I grew up in Atlanta.”

Stahlkuppe and his wife, Cathie, moved to the city decades ago and his son graduated from Gardendale High School. Cathie was active in the community before her death last year. Stahlkuppe has sometimes met resistance when giving Bibles away in local communities, but not in Gardendale.

“The mayor came by earlier,” Stahlkuppe said. “He knows me and came by and shook my hand. He’s always interested in doing something in the city.”

The bottom line is that Gardendale is filled with people who genuinely care about their neighbors.

“The people who are here are interesting and care about each other,” Stahlkuppe said. “That’s not something you can get in every city.”

Who is Larry York Drive named after?

In 2016, the Gardendale City Council renamed Civic Center Drive to Larry York Drive. Larry York was a council member in Gardendale from 1976 to 2008.

After graduating from Phillips High School in Gardendale, York graduated from Samford University with a degree in business administration. He then attended Cumberland Law School and received his degree.

At the time of the naming, Mayor Stan Hogeland said, “Larry has served our city for over 40 years. A great tribute

to a mentor, a great man and a great family!”

In addition to his years on the council, York also served in various other roles around the city. With all the roles he served in the city, it seemed appropriate to name the road to the city’s event hub after York.

York’s wife, Alice Barton York, passed away in 2020.

The journey to mend his heart led

Qua was born with tricuspid atresia that required a series of open heart surgeries as an infant. But as a teen, his health took a dramatic turn. Qua’s pediatrician and cardiologist recognized something wasn’t right with his heart and sent him to Children’s of Alabama. Our team was standing by when he arrived by helicopter, and within two weeks he received a new heart. He rebounded quickly and was back at home a few weeks later, thanks to the expert heart team here at Children’s of Alabama.

MINI MEATLOAVES WITH TANGY SAUCE

1 large egg

2 pounds ground chuck or a combination of ground beef and venison or ground sirloin

1/2 cup quick-cooking oats

3/4 teaspoon salt or garlic salt

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

3/4 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons light brown sugar

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or white vinegar or rice vinegar

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce or liquid aminos (Liquid aminos are gluten-free)

Lightly beat the egg in a large bowl with a fork.

Preheat air fryer 3 minutes at 375 degrees.

Breakup the ground meat in the bowl. There’s no getting around using your hands here. I usually use a pair of nylon/rubber gloves simply for easily clean up..

Add quick-cooking oats, salt and pepper.

With your hands, gently mix in the egg, oats, salt and pepper with the ground meat. Overworking the meat will make it tough. Under mixing may leave patches of oats or egg not evenly incorporated.

Shape the mixture into 2 free-form loaves, roughly 3 x 5.5 inches. The size will depend on what will fit into your air fryer.

If your air fryer rack is not nonstick, then spray it with an oil spray, first. Carefully place the loaves side by side in the preheated air fryer basket or tray.

Air fry at 375 degrees for about 19 minutes or until meatloaves are done in the middle-firm when pressed in the middle or temperature on an instant read thermometer reads 155°.

It’s a good idea to check at 17 minutes to make sure they aren’t getting too brown. All air fryers are not alike.

TANGY SAUCE

While the meatloaves are cooking, stir or whisk together ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce.

When meat loaves are 160° or no pink shows in the center, evenly spread the Tangy Sauce over both meat loaves. Cook an additional 1 minute on Air Fry to set the sauce.

Remove the meatloaves onto a cutting board. Let the meat loaf stand on a cutting board or plate 5 minutes before slicing.

Conventional Oven Method: Shape meatloaf into one larger free-form loaf and place on a wire cooling rack on top of a baking sheet. Bake at 375 for 40 minutes. Spread Tangy Sauce over meatloaf and bake 5 additional minutes or until center is 160°.
