The exercise required us to design an â&#x20AC;&#x153;inclusiveâ&#x20AC;? housing complex in Dwarka, New Delhi. Our scheme is an overlay of multiple environments and urban characters catering to diverse economic groups. In the stark contrast between market driven development needs and the surrounding barren land, our scheme tries to create a sense of place based on the shear diversity of its inhabitants, their needs and the possibility of their harmonious coexistence towards the creation of an inclusive city. The brief called for detailed analysis of any urban neighbourhood and the careful consideration of associated lost traditions. The main aim of the intervention was to make man realize his deeprooted relationship with nature by bringing to light the many ways in which he is (and always will remain) dependent on it- a fact that man is now prone to ignore.

THIRD YEAR / MIXED USE group project with Kabilan S. and Vishal Jayan

The brief was to design an iconic business hotel for the city, responsive to the surrounding context of the Feroze Shah monument and the Kotla sports stadium. The site was located at the intersection of old and new cities, and the design capitalized on its potential to become a major cultural, historical and sporting hub.

An architectural design competition adopted as the studio exercise. The brief called for a large mixed use development as part of an IT office complex in Greater Noida. One of the main challenges was to create a design that can â&#x20AC;&#x153;witness, influence and remain pertinent to the sharp, anticipated transformations of the regionâ&#x20AC;?.

The brief was to redesign or renovate your college to make it sustainable and zero energy. To this end the class first conducted a detailed energy audit. In depth research and technical and mathematical skills were necessary to reach the realistic figures. We won a Jury Commendation for this project.

SECOND YEAR / TREE HOUSE group project with Aditi Veena Gupta

The brief was to design a semi-permanent tourist facility centre, to be used only during the hospitable summer months. The site was along a steeply sloped hill, overlooking a river and shadowed by the Kinner Kailash and other mountains.

The brief was to design a sustainable tree house, necessarily elevated from the ground. The design was to be a holiday retreat for a married couple and their two teenaged children, the husband an author and the wife a painter. The vine house is inspired from climbers. Through my dissertation, The Elusive Inclusive City, I attempted to understand the role of temporary informal markets in the modern Indian city. I questioned the relationship between the city and temporary markets, and the increasing hostility between them even while the markets remain an important part of the city economy.

I helped map the temporary wholesale flower markets of Delhi at Connaught Place, Mehrauli and Fatehpuri Masjid. This exercise was part of the Genda Phool Project, an initiative to save them from displacement to the outskirts of the city.

Through primary research, we documented the characteristics of three mohallas in Shahjahanabad, Delhi. These findings were presented in a seminar titled By the People: Complexity in the Commonplace. We learnt that these micro-communities have largely emerged through self-organized, nondesigned growth and exhbit cooperation, resource sharing, and respect for public spaces- characteristics that planners value but are unable to recreate. Our seminar also raised pertinent questions about the role of the designer in such a reality: how does this knowledge of self organization -of unconscious and spontaneous non-design, by the people- affect the designerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s response? Can active design make conversation with this self-organization in a way that multiplies its positives and negates its negatives?

As part of the Overview group helped make a movie and collate our analysis on Bhopal and the historic royal precinct of Iqbal Maidan, one of the few large open public spaces in the old city. Our findings were published in a book.

As part of the second year academic trip, the class studied the village of Kalpa, Himachal Pradesh, declared a Model Heritage Tourist Village by the Government of India. Smaller groups studied individual neighbourhoods and documented them via drawings. The body of work was collated in the form of a Class Project Book.

Delhi Dallying is a public forum where we basically just talk about Delhi. We blog, and organize walks, talks and other interactive events with an aim to incite discussion on the complexity of everyday life in the city. We often talk about the imageability of Delhi, especially whether it can have a single unified “image” when it is an amalgamation of layer upon layer of built and social fabric.

Delhi Dallying has hosted 2 walks through the mohallas and by-lanes of Shahjahanad. The walks follow a loose chronology of events critical to its evolution and attempt to incite conversation about the relevance of contemporary Old Delhi.

Delhi Dallying began with a seminar on the imageability of Delhi: Is Delhi an iconic city? If New York: skyscrapers, then, Delhi:? We invited guest speakers to share their thoughts, followed by an open discussion. The seminar led us to conclude that Delhi is a true multiplicity, as many images as people. In fact, searching -or hoping- for a single unified “image” will be quite futile when it is an amalgamation of layer upon layer of built and social fabric.

The idea was to start conversation. Delhi is as multifaceted as its people, and there are as many Dillis as there are Dilliwallas: a true multiplicity. With these posters Delhi Dallying wanted its audience to stand up and take notice, to think.
