Stanley, North Dakota: geology, aquifers, and new oil well sites, Illustrator and GIS

BUILDING IN DEEP TIME The proliferation of fracking and its extraction of 65,000,000 year-old material in western North Dakota is setting in motion several alterations to both the landscape and peoples’ idea of their home in the present. The processes of the oil industry cannot be stopped, but they can be taken advantage of in order to give some power back to the region’s original residents. By reorganizing farming and oil waste as well as the junk from the residents’ pasts into a built-to-last constructed landscape, the people can have agency again through actually participating in the manipulation their environment.

REDEFINING POWER

1

Energy production and transmission in the United States is an infrastructure in great need of a redesign. Centralized systems of power are highly susceptible to the increasing number of extreme weather events. A system of distributed generation sites in St. Louis provides an opportunity for a unique architecture: each site is a spatial prototype for bringing research in alternative technologies together with spaces for specific city programs, in this case, the MetroLink and St. Louis University.

VALPARAISO, CHILE Valparaiso is located on the coast amidst steep hills and ravines that limit mobility and cause social segregation. The existing system of ascensores are in need of an upgrade: a network of vertical nodes inserted into the city’s hills. These will house both the infrastructure needed and commercial program to fund its upkeep, giving the city a lasting extension to their current transportation system.

CONVENING A CONSTITUENCY _ADAPTING INFRASTRUCTURES Field Research and Independent Study

Instructor Stephen Mueller

ASCENSORE FUTURES Field research reveals that the current situation of the ascensores is fragile: despite governmental attempts at ownership, promised repairs and operations have not taken place. This suggests that the ascensores should be put in control of the community. But as the city has changed, are the ascencores’ historic purposes enough? Speculating into the future of Valparaiso reveals the potential for alternative programs that highlight existing needs and important user groups. These include the Hypertourist, the Courier, the Newsie, and The Outdoorsman.

PLATFORM FOR FLEXIBILITY Villa 31 is an informal neighborhood at the center of current political debate, located in the heart of Buenos Aires, Argentina. This project provides resource collection areas, a library, a cafeteria/ learning kitchen, and rehearsal rooms below that support flexible spaces for students and teachers above. The buildings lift off the ground to preserve public thoroughfares under the highway, and the space between them is utilized for public performances and community events.

FREEDOM OF CHOICE The upper level is the center of activity where students can identify and build for their own interests. The floating roof structure is built in, but the location and materials of enclosure are to be determined by the school each season. Opciones de facada en el nivel alta, 1 : 50; 1) cortina
