Trains station used to transport jews, Berlin Germany

The resistance played an important role in the defeat of the Nazi. They would destroy communication lines assisted escapes, and openly attacked on the Germans. Resistance movements were found in all Nazi-occupied countries. In 1940 the Germans invaded western europe and occupied France, Belgium and Holland. When the germans occupied the western part of france, the resistance parties started to sabotage the Nazi government. The German Gestapo was a powerful opponent for the resistance. The resistance relied on coded messages to members and plan operations. Many members, like spies, used coded names to not be caught by the Nazi. Newspapers, poetry, articles, drawings, were all forms of coded messages for the resistance. Resistance was very smart with controlling their privacy to not get caught. They used a pyramid command

structure, that made sure that no members would meet with less than 3 or less members. No record of the people in the resistance were kept. This structure made sure that enemies would only be able to identify a group of three or less at a time. This structure worked for a while until enemies would infiltrate the Gestapo. The french resistance was able to build an underground railroad to smuggle allies to england. In 1944 the resistance cut the Nazies supplies and helped allied forces. The resistance also assassinated many Nazi officials at the end of the war. As many of 25,000 french men and women were accused of being part of the resistance, they were later sent to concentration camps.

SPIES Not as in James Bond, and mission impossible but as in Holocaust spies!!!

During the world war, spies were used to get information from the enemy. Spies were not just on the Nazi side, there were many on the non-Nazi side. They found information about the tides, landing places, currents, etc. Many european spies would have code names or numbers, incase the enemy would find out who they were. Many famous spies were during world war are Josephine Baker, Morris Moe Berg, Julia Child, and Roald Dahl.

Dear Charle de Gaulle, I am in great trouble and I don’t know what to do. I am a spy for the resistance and the Nazi are on my trail. They have been eliminating all the spies I have met. The amount of messages I have to carry increases every day. My friends, my teachers, not even my family know what I do. No one can protect my or help me I am scared they will figure out who I am and kill my friends and family. How can I prevent this from happening without giving up being a spy? Please respond as soon as possible. Sincerely Susan Dear Susan, You are a very brave girl for being a spy. I encourage you to stay out of sight and be careful of who you can trust. There is help on the way. Sincerely Charle de Gaule
