Arts + Culture Guide

Spring 2018

Open to everyone!

April - June

Welcome Dear Friends,

Your feedback is important to us, and we are grateful to the hundreds of members who completed our recent survey, conducted as a part of the benchmarking program of the Jewish Community Center Association of North America. We were pleased to see how many members identified our arts and culture programs as a primary reason for their membership! Benchmarking data helps us to set goals and establish priorities. One of our goals is to expand our arts, culture, educational, and social programming. We are particularly excited about our upcoming gallery exhibitions. These include our first-ever display of Shlomo Katz’s Passover Portfolio, from the MJCC’s permanent collection, during Pesach. Following that, we look forward to presenting the photos of Israel submitted by our members for our Israel Photo Contest, in advance of Yom Ha’Atzmaut. Israel’s 70th Birthday is likely to be our biggest event of the year, and we hope you’ll join us for music, food, dancing, and activities for the whole family at Yom Ha’Atzmaut on April 18. Don’t miss our upcoming workshops on art and on memoir writing, and keep an eye out for details of this year’s Outdoor Summer Concert Series! We look forward to seeing you the next time you Find Yourself at the J! Warm regards,

Steve Albert Executive Director

Art Gallery Exhibit: The Passover Series

Shlomo Katz, Polish/Israeli, 1937-1992 In 1945, Shlomo Katz immigrated from Poland to Palestine when he was eight years old. Katz developed an original technique of oil painting on a gilded metal surface. The result recalls medieval icons on the one hand, and oriental miniatures on the other. The metallic inks of the golden tones and the importance of absolute registration presented just a part of the challenge, but the Katz serigraphs became the ultimate in modern printmaking.
