Celebrating a Century! Annual Report 2013-2014
The MJCC is dedicated to the enrichment of Jewish life by providing for the social, cultural, educational, and recreational needs of the Jewish community, and serving as the common meeting place for the entire Jewish community. This mission has always been interpreted as welcoming our non-Jewish neighbors and friends as well. As the sign at our front door proclaims: Everyone Welcome!

Dear Friends of the MJCC, One hundred years and still going strong! As the MJCC celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, we are very proud to be able to continue our long tradition of providing for the social, cultural, educational and recreational needs of Portland’s Jewish community. Of course, we welcome all individuals who desire access and experiences at our community center and we are happy to report that hundreds of people pass through our doors every day. Membership and participation in camps, classes and events are at an all-time high and we continue to welcome more and more people every day. This past year the Schnitzer Family Campus was able to make some much needed upgrades and improvements thanks to generous Roots & Rafters contributions. We hope you have been able to enjoy the new energy-efficient lighting in the sportsplex, additional bike racks added to the covered area, new Selectorized fitness equipment and cycle bikes, a complete remodel of the men’s sauna, the new gymnasium curtain, and a whole host of upgrades to our therapy pool locker rooms and lobby. While these items may be more visible, rest assured that we are making great improvements to our HVAC and controls systems, as well as parking lot and roof projects that are well underway! All of these improvements are sure to have a lasting impact which means the MJCC will be in great shape for many generations to come. As we continue to grow and meet the needs of our community, we encourage you to check out our full schedule of classes, events and activities. The MJCC has something for everyone: warm water therapy, basketball leagues, InPower cancer exercise program, Mah Jongg lessons, art shows, swimming lessons, orchestra concerts, group exercise classes, nutritional therapy and much, much more! Whatever draws you to the J, we strive to assure that everyone feels welcome and part of our community. Check out our calendar on the website and be sure to like and follow us on Facebook. There is always something new happening at YOUR MJCC. This Annual Report is an opportunity to thank all of those who have helped to build this community. You will find a list of generous supporters who made contributions over the past year. We are especially thankful of those who have contributed to our Roots & Rafters campaign, although only new Roots & Rafters gifts have been included in this report. Everyone who has contributed to this community over the past 100 years deserves our gratitude. Thank you for making our community center vibrant and relevant for many generations to come. B’shalom,
Beth Germain

Roots & Rafters
Our Roots & Rafters Campaign is making amazing strides due to the support of community members, organizations, and the Harold and Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation that is matching every gift up to $500,000. The generosity of our community is allowing for significant improvements to the Schnitzer Family Campus including upgrades to the locker rooms and warm water therapy pool. In the coming months, two major projects will be implemented. In November we will be resurfacing our parking lot, which will make it safer and more convenient for the thousands of members and guests who come through every month. Soon after, new HVAC controls will be installed, making the MJCC more comfortable, as well as more energy efficient for many years to come. This project is supported by a grant from the Energy Trust of Oregon.
We are deeply grateful to each and every donor that is helping to grow and improve the Schnitzer Family Campus.
Life and Legacy
The MJCC Legacy Society recognizes those who have made the extraordinary commitment of including Mittleman Jewish Community Center in their estate plans with a gift through a bequest, trust, life insurance policy or other planned gift. The commitment does not require a completed gift, but is merely a short form expressing intent to make the MJCC part of your legacy. We would like to gratefully acknowledge all of the members of the MJCC Legacy Society. MJCC is one of eleven organizations in Oregon participating in Oregon Jewish Community Foundation’s Life & Legacy program, funded by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. If you would like more information about how to include MJCC in your estate plan, you can contact Development Coordinator, Lisa Katon at lkaton@ oregonjcc.org.
