Mittleman Jewish Community Center Annual Report | 2018-19
Our Mission and Vision
Our Mission
Our Vision
The MJCC is an inclusive and welcoming hub for a diverse community, fostering lifelong wellness and providing dynamic social and educational experiences, grounded in Jewish values and culture.
The Mittleman Jewish Community Center envisions a thriving, diverse Jewish community, and embraces a central role in welcoming all to gather, connect, learn and celebrate life.
Dear Friends of the MJCC, We are proud to present the Mittleman Jewish Community Center’s Annual Report for the 2018-19 fiscal year. This year, the MJCC completed the development of a new Strategic Plan. The plan focuses on six areas: Community Engagement, Arts and Culture Programming, Programs for Children and Young Families, Building Utilization, Financial Sustainability and Development. This report highlights our work in these areas and our priorities in the next few years. Throughout the past year, we have continued to expand our offerings to better serve our community. New fitness classes and wellness workshops have supplemented our existing diverse array of offerings. Through our “J Without Walls” program, we have offered films and lectures from Vancouver, WA to Corvallis. Day campers participated in SHADE (Sun Hat Awareness Distribution and Education), and our Counselor in Training program grew larger. Our JCC Maccabi delegation made friends with Jewish teens from around the nation, participated in community service, and won medals. Our films, authors, lectures, classes, art exhibitions, and PDX Business Series have continued to educate and entertain. All that we do strengthens the bonds of our community. None of the above would be possible without our generous supporters. Membership and program revenue covers only 80% of the J’s operating budget, and we depend upon philanthropic gifts in order to provide all of our programs and services. Gifts from the community have allowed us to purchase new fitness equipment, resurface the warm water pool, replace the Sportsplex “bubble,” offer financial assistance for day camp and membership, subsidize the JCC Maccabi® experience, maintain our building, and launch new programmatic initiatives. We extend a special thanks to the members of the MJCC Legacy Society. Legacies, or after lifetime gifts, help to build our endowment, ensuring that the MJCC will continue to serve our community for generations to come. Thank you again for your support of the MJCC. With your help, we continue to build and strengthen our community and to serve as the living room of Portland’s Jewish community – your home away from home. B’Shalom,
Steve Albert Steven Klein Executive Director Board President
Strategic Plan 2019-2024
Arts + Culture Programs Overall Objective:
The MJCC will be recognized as a significant Jewish cultural resource to the Oregon and SW Washington community.
2018-19 Highlights OSU Author Talk
As part of our J without Walls (JWOW) programs, we hosted author Mary Morris in Corvallis, OR. It was an exciting opportunity to partner with the Jewish community outside of the Portland metro area. Over 75 people of various ages and backgrounds came out to meet and hear from Mary! This was in partnership with the Beit Am Jewish Community with space being donated by the OSU Foundation.
3 Faiths Arts Exhibit
Peace and Justice: Three Lettering Traditions Artists Sara Harwin, Kanaan Kanaan, and Inga Dubay explored the tradition of sacred letters in Hebrew, Arabic and English calligraphy in many forms of art expression. Each artist used their creative voice to address peace and justice. “Inga, Kanaan, and I come from different traditions, yet when we each speak about our journeys, we seek to touch upon a sacred, spiritual path, says Harwin.
Arts and Culture Committee During this past year, the MJCC formed an Arts and Culture committee. This newly established committee is tasked with reviewing our programs, and helping to implement these events throughout the year. The committee is comprised of individuals that are veterans of the community, new to Portland, and span a wide range of ages.
Programs for Children + Young Families Overall Objective:
The MJCC will be recognized within the community for its effective engagement of children and families throughout the year.
2018-19 Highlights Big Truck Day
Big Truck Day on Labor Day has become an annual tradition for our community with nearly 1,000 people in attendance this past year! Children and their grownups had a blast as they sat on lit-up police ATV’s, honked the horns of classic cars, and took photos on some awesome motorcycles! The fire truck, limos, and construction vehicles were, as always, big hits. We met many new community members at our tent where everyone had an opportunity to spin the wheel and win some awesome MJCC swag!
New Year’s Eve at Noon
Another staple event in our community, NYE@Noon was one of our most popular events of the year. Over 600 families came to the MJCC to enjoy several youthrelated activities which culminated in our big balloon drop at noon! Hundreds of balloons came rushing down from the ceiling which yielded tons of smiles from families as they celebrated the beginning of a new year. Afterwards, everyone was encouraged to head to the pool float for even more fun!
SHADE Program for Camp
MJCC Summer Day Campers learned all about sun-safety in a new program made possibe, in part, by a grant from the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute Community Partnership Program. Campers talked about UV rays, conducted science experiments, were provided sun-safety hats, and participated in games and activities that educated them about safe sun exposure behaviors. This program was fun, educational, and highly successful.
Community Engagement Overall Objective:
The MJCC will become a place where a diverse population can come together and enjoy a variety of programs and activities.
2018-19 Highlights Fitness Palooza
Our eighth annual Fitness Palooza was a big success! Palooza offered members and guests the opportunity to try condensed versions of our group exercise classes, meet our personal trainers and get all of their fitness questions answered, partake in free fitness assessments, and join in on the very popular Zumba dance party. Fitness Palooza has grown into a much anticipated event within our community, and we add to it each year. We are in the process of working with vendors in the hopes of having sponsors provide us with swag and giveaways. Mark your calendars - Fitness Palooza 2020 is on January 12!
Safe Falling with Intelligence Newly added in the spring, this fourweek class series provided useful skills and techniques for an ever-growing aging population. Falling can be serious for older adults, as aging causes the bones to become brittle and breaks do not heal as readily. Safe Falling with Intelligence taught participants ways to minimize the damage from falling. Since we kicked off this class last May, we have had dozens of participants learn new skills, providing them with more confidence than when they began.
Young Adult Programming
Our young adult programming is for Jewish young adults in Greater Portland who are seeking a Jewish experience in the outdoors, nature, and the environment. Programs are open to any member of the community. Activities have a Jewish learning component and include: hiking, biking, camping, rock climbing, backpacking, skiing, snowshoeing, and kayaking. One program was a snowshoeing trip where survival skills were discussed from a Jewish perspective and another combined Cosmic Tubing on Mt. Hood with Havdalah.
Building Utilization Overall Objective:
The MJCC will create a campus vision to address the utilization and space needs of the different departments in the coming years.
2018-19 Highlights Sportsplex Upgrade
The replacement of the Sportsplex shell, or “Bubble as it is fondly known, has completely refreshed the space! The interior space is larger and brighter, and the structure itself is more resilient to the impact of weather. The new shell will serve us for many years to come and ensures an outstanding venue for soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, gymnastics, and a host of other sports and recreation programs, as well as PE classes, indoor playground, and other programs for children and families.
Campus Vision
One strategic priority is the development of a comprehensive campus vision to identify and plan for the facility needs of the MJCC and Portland Jewish Academy in the coming years. As the organizations grow, and their programs expand and evolve, their facilities needs change. During the upcoming year, we will identify guiding principles for the planning process, challenges with the existing facility, and opportunities to address our programmatic needs. Ultimately, we will develop an architectural plan for repurposing, renovating, and expanding our physical plant.
Financial Sustainability Overall Objective:
The MJCC will meet its capital and programmatic needs in a financially sustainable way that will ensure program excellence and provide investments in staff and physical space.

2018-19 Highlights Dude Solutions
Our adoption of “Dude Solutions,” a cloud-based, operations management software package has allowed us to be proactive in the on-going maintenance of our facility. Using information provided by engineering studies, we can anticipate the lifetime of various pieces of equipment, as well as furnishings, carpeting, etc. This system has allowed us to budget appropriately for the on-going preservation of our facility and to ensure that we avoid deferred maintenance.
Rentals
Facilities rentals generate 10% of the MJCC’s revenue as well as funds necessary to operate and maintain the campus. From Shriner’s swimming to athletic programs in the gymnasium and Sportsplex, rental programs provide an array of opportunities to community members of all ages. Our ballroom rentals showcase an outstanding venue for community events presented by the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation, Jewish Family and Child Service, the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, and numerous other community organizations, as well as special gatherings to celebrate bar and bat mitzvahs, quinceañeras, graduations, retirements, and weddings!
$
Development Overall Objective:
The MJCC will determine the most efficient and effective way of building resources, with a goal of reaching the benchmark of 12% of income from fundraising, including the raising of $150,000 annually for building maintenance and upkeep. The MJCC will increase the endowment to $1 million in the next five years.
2018-19 Highlights Friends of The Center Brunch with Michael W. Twitty
Business Breakfast/Smaller, more intimate events
The MJCC is grateful to each and every donor who supports the Center via the Brunch and other fundraising activities. The J relies on your support to provide the programs, services, and wellness options that make the J the essential community resource it is.
We have also added smaller events to foment and increase visibility and connection among MJCC members. This past year, we hosted a Wine Event donated by Carrie Wynkoop and Cellar 503; dinner and wine pairing at Aviv, hosted by Chef Tal Caspi; and a poker night with Rob La Forte. Look for more opportunities in 2019-2020!
The Cooking Gene author Michael W. Twitty addressed the MJCC on Sunday, March 3rd. He detailed his life as a cook, author, and Jewish activist and delivered a message of inclusion and community building. His evening presentation was an exploration of Jewish food and how it morphs as Jews move from city to city and continent to continent.
Over the past two years, the MJCC has hosted six MJCC Business Events. These events have provided an opportunity to showcase leaders from the community and offer networking, education and community building opportunities for the JCC, our members and the broader community.

Our Donors We are incredibly grateful to each and every community member and organization that supports the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. The donors who gave during the 2018-2019 fiscal year helped to expand our cultural and educational events, sustain the crucial work done in the Warm Water Pool, and provide scholarships for those with limited financial means. This list reflects only new gifts to operations. It does not account for previous pledges or pledge payments. We have made our best effort to ensure the accuracy of this list. If you find an error, or if you would like information about making a tax-deductible donation, contact Saul Korin, Director of Donor Engagement + Philanthropy, at 503.452.3427 or skorin@oregonjcc.org.

Life and Legacy
The MJCC Legacy Society recognizes those who have made the extraordinary commitment of including the MJCC in their estate plan with a gift through a bequest, trust, life insurance policy or other planned gift. The commitment does not require a completed gift, but is merely an expression of intent to include support for the MJCC as a part of your legacy. We gratefully acknowledge all of the members of the MJCC Legacy Society. The MJCC is one of ten organizations in the first cohort in Oregon to participate in the LIFE & LEGACY ™ program, funded by the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.
