Mittleman Jewish Community Center
Annual Report 2015-16
Our Mission The MJCC is dedicated to the enrichment of Jewish life by providing for the social, cultural, educational, and recreational needs of the Jewish community, and serving as the common meeting place for the entire Jewish community. This mission has always been interpreted as welcoming our non-Jewish neighbors and friends as well. As the sign at our front door proclaims: Everyone Welcome!
Chai Baby Indoor Playground
Dear Friends of the MJCC, This has been a year filled with amazing success for the MJCC! Our longstanding programs have continued to grow and thrive, and we’ve offered an array of new opportunities and services to meet the social, cultural, educational, health and fitness needs of our community. We’re proud to be open to everyone, and we’re proud of the diversity reflected in our ever-growing membership. This year saw the launch of many dynamic new programs. New offerings included “Healthy Hearts,” focused on cardiac health; new group exercise classes; our first-ever Jewish Author Series; and Shabbat-in-a-Box, for young adults. Of particular note was our sending, for the first time in over a decade, a delegation of Jewish teens from all over Oregon to the JCC Maccabi Games. These programs, and others, are described in more detail in this Annual Report. Our longstanding programs engage our community in myriad ways. Our cultural arts programs offer something for everyone and include Jewish holiday celebrations, our annual Israel Film Series, and lectures, concerts, classes, and performances. Adults of all ages benefit from personal and small group training, as well as group exercise classes that range from yoga to BODYPUMPTM – and much, much more. Kids love our Stingrays Swim Team, Indoor Playground, Club J, MJCC Day Camp, vacation camp, and the opportunities for rock climbing, dance, gymnastics, and a wide range of sports. Many individuals benefit from specialized offerings such as arthritis therapy, Dance for Parkinson’s Disease, Electric Hockey and Inpower. None of this would be possible without our generous supporters. This year, we completed our Roots & Rafters campaign, exceeding our goal of $3.5 million. This campaign allowed us to upgrade our facilities including the roof, parking lot, locker rooms, fitness equipment, playgrounds, and furnishings. The gifts and grants received through our annual campaign made it possible for us to subsidize the JCC Maccabi Games, launch new initiatives, and offer scholarships to members and camperships to children. We also exceeded our goal of new commitments to the MJCC Legacy Society, now in its third year. Legacy gifts ensure that the MJCC will continue to serve our community for generations to come. Your gifts help to build and strengthen our community. Your generosity is essential to making the MJCC – the living room of Portland’s Jewish community – a vibrant, dynamic place which you can be proud to call your home away from home. Thank you for your support. B’Shalom,
Steven Albert Executive Director

New Wellness Coaching options such as mindfulness workshops, meditation series, and life coaching provide a holistic approach to health and wellness.

Author Series
In the spring, the MJCC began an Author Series program bringing in exceptional speakers from around the country. Attendees were given a chance to hear from the authors themselves and each event concluded with a book signing. We are excited to continue this program in 2017!

These classes give youth a taste of a variety of sports and help foster sportsmanship, health and wellness. This year the MJCC rejoined the JCC Maccabi Games, sending a group of twenty Jewish teen athletes to St. Louis to compete in the areas of soccer, basketball and track. The Games involve over 4,000 Jewish athletes, ages 13 - 16, who gather in three different locations in North America each summer. A great experience was had by all, and we hope to increase our delegation size to include more teens next summer.

Our Donors
We are incredibly grateful to each and every community member and organization that supports the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. The donors who gave during the 2015-2016 fiscal year helped to expand our cultural and educational events, sustain the crucial work done in the Warm Water Therapy Pool, and provide scholarships for those with limited financial means. This list reflects only new gifts to operations. It does not account for previous pledges or pledge payments. We have made our best effort to ensure the accuracy of this list. If you find an error, or if you would like information about making a taxdeductible donation, please contact Saul Korin, the MJCC’s Development Manager, at 503.452.3427 or skorin@oregonjcc.org. $100,000 & above

Life and Legacy
The MJCC Legacy Society recognizes those who have made the extraordinary commitment of including the Mittleman Jewish Community Center in their estate plan with a gift through a bequest, trust, life insurance policy or other planned gift. The commitment does not require a completed gift, but is merely an expression of intent to include support for the MJCC as a part of your legacy. We gratefully acknowledge all of the members of the MJCC Legacy Society. MJCC is one of eleven organizations in Oregon participating in the Life & Legacy program, funded by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation. If you would like more information about how to include the MJCC in your estate plan, please contact Steve Albert, the MJCC’s Executive Director, at 503.535.3592 or salbert@oregonjcc.org.
