Annual Report | 2021-22

OUR Mission + Vision

MISSION

The MJCC is an inclusive and welcoming hub for a diverse community, fostering lifelong wellness and providing dynamic social and educational experiences, grounded in Jewish values and culture.

VISION

The Mittleman Jewish Community Center envisions a thriving, diverse Jewish community, and embraces a central role in welcoming all to gather, connect, learn and celebrate life.

Dear Friends of the MJCC,

We are proud to present the Mittleman Jewish Community Center’s Annual Report for the 2021-22 fiscal year. Our ability to support the community with an extensive array of high quality, in person programs and services is dependent upon the generous philanthropic support of our members and extended community. We are deeply grateful to our donors.

This year has been an exciting one as we have continued to expand our offerings. As always, our fiscal year started and ended with MJCC Summer Day Camp. During the summer of 2022, we served an average of 166 campers per week, representing significant growth over our pre-pandemic enrollment. Throughout the year, we’ve seen steady increases in membership, with significant growth in participation in our growing array of group exercise classes. Soccer leagues, drop-in basketball, swim team, afterschool classes, and other programs all saw high levels of participation as our community resumed in person activities.

We’ve also had numerous opportunities to gather for community events during the past year, from our PDX Business Series to our second annual Walk for the J to our Community Celebration. Programs that celebrate Jewish culture and strengthen Jewish identity remain at the heart of our mission. Our Yom Ha’Atzmaut concert, JCC Maccabi delegation, Jewish Community Orchestra concerts, Israeli films, Jewish authors, and holiday celebrations put the “J” in MJCC.

Membership, program, and rental revenue provides only 65% of the J’s revenue, and we depend upon our generous supporters to enable us to offer our wide range of programs and services. Gifts from the community remain critical to allow us to purchase new equipment, update our facilities, offer financial assistance for membership and camp, maintain our building, and launch new initiatives. We are especially grateful to our event sponsors and the members of our Friends of the Center Society who make these programs – and so much more – possible for our community. We also extend a special thanks to the members of the MJCC Legacy Society. Legacy gifts help to build our endowment, ensuring that the MJCC will continue to serve our community for generations to come.

Thank you again for your strong commitment to the MJCC. We are finalizing a new strategic plan and look forward to sharing it with the community later this fall. With your help, we will continue to serve and strengthen our community, as your home away from home.

MJCC A Hub of Gathering!

MJCC Summer Day Camp

This summer, we were pleased to offer nine weeks of day camp, serving on average 166 campers a week, with campers ranging in age from preschool through tenth grade. Our campers loved going swimming four days a week, playing in the Sportsplex every day, as well as coming together on Shabbat to sing songs and tell stories. This summer we had 486 unique campers total, as well as 1493 camper weeks. We appreciated seeing our returning campers and were excited to welcome our new camper families as well. We can’t wait to grow our camp family more next summer!

Let’s talk about Oregon wine.

For the first time since 2020, we finished the year in person with “Let’s talk about Oregon Wine,” which included a wine tasting at Cellar 503. On June 22nd, 25 people joined us to learn about and taste Oregon wine with Carrie Wynkoop of Cellar 503 and Matt Berson from Love and Squalor Wine. We learned about the history of Oregon wine, about environmental and smoke impacts and where the industry is going. Of course, we tasted four delicious wines, hand-selected by Carrie and Matt, and noshed on kosher snacks provided by Century Catering.

MJCC SportsTeams

STINGRAYS: 82 swimmers • 12 swim meets

The Stingrays had a great year and loved being back in the pool together. Swim meets were back in full swing with team cheers sending swimmers on to new personal records and championship times every month.

SOCCER: When people from the community come together as a team, everyone feels strongly about their contribution to the team’s successes and failures. We cheer one another during the highs and provide comfort during the lows. Whether you are a player or a spectator, you feel the positive energy and the strength of the community.

WALK FOR THE J

On Sunday, April 24, the MJCC held its second annual “Walk for the J.” For our 2022 walk, our goal was to collect one million steps for the MJCC. Together, we raised over $11,000 in support of the J and our partner, Cedar Sinai Park. Participants were given the option to walk from the J or from any place that was convenient for them. Most participants took the Gabriel Park route on what turned out to be a gorgeous, sunny day. Jonathan Glass was the chair for the event and Jen Felberg was Cedar Sinai Park’s staff liaison.

COMMUNITY Celebration

The MJCC’s Community Celebration was held Tuesday, May 24.

After two years fully virtual, it was great to be in person. Michelle Alany & The Mystics entertained the crowd with their energizing soulful music. The Pillar of Excellence Award was presented to MJCC Past-President and friend Jerry Sadis. Everest Sibony and Lyla Paru were each presented with the Harry Glickman Scholar Athlete Award. We inducted Jake Raiton into the Oregon Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. We also recognized MJCC Stingrays (swim team) of note, most dedicated members and superstar camp counselors.

It was a wonderful way to celebrate our community!

AFTER SCHOOL

Our youth programs thrived through the spring with After School programs. We were happy to offer rock climbing, chess, basketball, Tae Kwon Do, and KidFit. We love seeing different areas of the J filled with children engaging in their after school classes. Our programs provide positive outlets for kids to be active, learn, and most importantly, to have fun. All these courses returned this fall as well, due to their popularity amongst children and their families.

FINANCIALS

SDue to the pandemic, the MJCC became increasingly dependent upon government funds providing emergency aid. In 2021-22, only 65% of MJCC revenue came from membership, program fees, and rental revenue. As the pandemic recedes, we are committed to returning to a balanced budget based on traditional revenue sources. We are extraordinarily grateful to our donors for making it possible for us to provide our wide range of programs and services.

Our Donors

We are incredibly grateful to each and every community member and organization that supports the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. The donors who gave during the 2021-2022 fiscal year helped us to recover from the pandemic and continue to offer quality programs to our community. This list reflects only new gifts to operations. It does not account for previous pledges or pledge payments. We have made our best effort to ensure the accuracy of this list. If you find an error, or if you would like information about making a tax-deductible donation, contact Saul Korin, Director of Donor Engagement + Philanthropy, at 503.452.3427 or skorin@oregonjcc.org.
