Mittleman Jewish Community Center
Annual Report 2014-15
The MJCC is dedicated to the enrichment of Jewish life by providing for the social, cultural, educational, and recreational needs of the Jewish community, and serving as the common meeting place for the entire Jewish community. This mission has always been interpreted as welcoming our non-Jewish neighbors and friends as well. As the sign at our front door proclaims: Everyone Welcome!

Dear Friends of the MJCC, What an exciting year this has been! We’ve launched our second century with a renewed commitment to meeting the social, cultural, educational and recreational needs of our community. We’re proud to be open to everyone, and we’re excited that our membership reached a record level this year! In addition, participation in all of our programs, from swim lessons and day camp to fitness classes and cultural events, is on the rise. At the MJCC, we meet our mission by combining dedicated commitment to longstanding programs with creative innovation to meet the ever-changing needs of our community. We continue to provide a wide range of programs and services in health and wellness, including: fitness classes in yoga, tai chi, Zumba, and Pilates; our warm water therapy pool; racquetball; Ignite; and specialized programs such as Inpower. This year, we added new fitness classes, a regular mid-day basketball program, and equipment upgrades. Our robust offerings for kids include vacation day camps, Stingrays swim team, Indoor Playground, Club J, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, swim lessons, Shabbat celebrations and more. And our Arts & Culture programs have expanded greatly this past year to include a wider array of lectures, concerts, Jewish learning opportunities, and events, including our 1st Annual Israel Film Series. We have continued to upgrade our facilities, as well. Many of these projects aren’t very glamorous – roofing improvements, parking lot repairs, HVAC upgrades – but they are important for the longterm sustainability of our Center. These projects were funded by your generous gifts to the Roots & Rafters campaign. We’re delighted that our new affiliation with the Jewish Community Center Association of North America (JCCA) has yielded so many benefits. Members can visit JCC’s around North America at no cost, thanks to our reciprocity agreements. Our outstanding staff now has access to resources and experts that allow us to serve our community better. JCCA programs, such as the JCC Maccabi Games, are now available right here in Portland. And our new brand, as seen in our new website and print materials, celebrates our ruach (spirit) and excitement about the future of the MJCC. None of this would be possible without our generous supporters, whose contributions help to build and strengthen our community. Annual donations, legacy gifts, and campaign contributions are all essential to making the MJCC – the living room of Portland’s Jewish community – a vibrant, dynamic place which you can be proud to call your home away from home. Thank you for your generosity. B’shalom,
Steven Albert Barry Benson Robert Philip Executive Director Co-President Co-President Board of Directors Board of Directors

Our Donors We are incredibly grateful to each and every community member and organization that supports the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. The donors who gave during the 2014-2015 fiscal year helped to expand our cultural and educational events, sustain the crucial work done in the Warm Water Therapy Pool, and provide scholarships for those with limited financial means. This list reflects only new gifts to operations and Roots & Rafters, it does not account for previous pledges or pledge payments. We have made our best effort to ensure the accuracy of this list. If you find an error, or if you would like information about making a tax-deductible donation, please contact Meaghann Ande, the MJCC’s Development Associate, at 503.452.3427 or mande@oregonjcc.org. $100,000 & above Jewish Federation of Greater Portland Arlene Schnitzer $20,000-$99,999 Anonymous Friendly Rosenthal Fund of the OJCF Harold and Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation $5,000-$19,999 JEZ Foundation, Jason Zidell and Crystal Lamb Joseph E. The generosity of our community has allowed for significant improvements to the Schnitzer Family Campus, including upgrades to the Warm Water Therapy Pool and locker rooms, structural and surfacing improvements to the parking lot, enhancements to campus security, repairs to our roof, and installation of new HVAC controls. The HVAC project is also supported by a grant from the Energy Trust of Oregon. We are deeply grateful to each and every donor that is helping to grow and improve the Schnitzer Family Campus.
Life and Legacy
The MJCC Legacy Society recognizes those who have made the extraordinary commitment of including the Mittleman Jewish Community Center in their estate plan with a gift through a bequest, trust, life insurance policy or other planned gift. The commitment does not require a completed gift, but is merely an expression of intent to include support for the MJCC as a part of your legacy. We gratefully acknowledge all of the members of the MJCC Legacy Society. MJCC is one of eleven organizations in Oregon participating in the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation’s Life & Legacy program, funded by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. If you would like more information about how to include the MJCC in your estate plan, please contact Lisa Katon, the MJCC’s Development Coordinator, at 503.535.3532 or lkaton@oregonjcc.org.
