Our Comprehensive Campus Vision
New Partnership with Cascadia Clusters
One of the major objectives that is outlined in the MJCC’s new strategic plan is the creation of a campus plan to identify and address the short and long-term facility needs of both the MJCC and Portland Jewish Academy. This summer, we launched the effort to develop a comprehensive campus plan. The Working Group that is leading this effort includes members of the Board of Directors, as well as members of the leadership teams at PJA and the MJCC.
The MJCC has entered into a partnership with Cascadia Clusters, a non-profit that builds tiny houses to help address homelessness in Portland and around Oregon. Cascadia Clusters has signed a three-year agreement to sublease a portion of the property north of the soccer field that is leased by the MJCC from the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland. The MJCC will continue to use the playing field for camp, sports, and recreational programs.
The Working Group is led by Brian Carleton of Carleton Hart Architecture. (Brian designed the PJA Learning Commons and the Community Mikvah; he is also a member of the Facilities Committee, a former Board member, and a PJA alum parent.) The group began by identifying a number of broad goals for the plan which include, in part: • Strengthen our identity as the hub of Jewish life in Portland • Provide a state-of-the-art facility that is attractive and competitive in the community • Provide adequate space for Jewish education for adults and youth year round • Ensure broad appeal and access to all ages and demographics • Provide more integration of the indoor and outdoor environments In addition, the Working Group has identified Guiding Principles for the Campus Plan, the challenges and constraints that are imposed by the current facility, and opportunities for expansion, renovation, and repurposing space. The group is also identifying members of a larger Stakeholders Committee to support this process, especially as we move into the stage of developing plan concepts.
Jordan Schnitzer has generously offered a $50,000 matching grant to cover the costs of the development of the Campus Plan. We have begun raising the $25,000 that the MJCC must contribute toward this effort. If you are interested in making a gift to support the Campus Plan, please contact Steve Albert at salbert@oregonjcc.org or at 503.535.3592.
Cascadia Clusters trains homeless individuals in residential construction so the individuals building the tiny houses are both working to provide transitional housing and learning a trade. Once complete, the tiny houses are relocated to villages such as Hazelnut Grove, with a community washhouse and kitchen. Cascadia Clusters has partnered with other Jewish organizations in our community, including Congregation Beth Israel, Congregation Neveh Shalom and Tivnu – the Jewish Gap Year program. Their new site on the MJCC’s campus will provide numerous additional opportunities for PJA students, MJCC members, and members of the broader community to engage in meaningful volunteer work. Beginning this fall, Cascadia Clusters will offer open volunteer hours, which will be widely publicized by the MJCC.
Staff Profiles - Personal Trainers Shawn Montiel Assistant Fitness Manager and Personal Trainer Shawn joined the MJCC family back in March. He has quickly become a positive presence around the building, helping members design detailed workout plans, teaching fitness classes and working alongside Fitness Program Manager, Joe Seitz, in various capacities. You’ll mostly see Shawn in the Fitness Center or teaching Body Shop, a high-intensity interval group training class on Tuesdays. Shawn was born and raised in San Diego and holds a number of fitness credentials including National Academy of Sports Medicine and National Personal Training Institute certificates. Shawn is currently pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Applied Health and Fitness at PSU and plans to continue with a Masters in Athletic Training. Shawn loves working at the J because he gets the “chance to help members, guests, and MJCC staff better themselves physically and mentally through tough one-on-one workouts and group training classes.” Another reason he loves working here is the “sense of community with members.” One of Shawn’s major passions is helping clients who struggle with their weight. Shawn has personal experience losing over ninety pounds and now is able to be an advocate for those who struggle with their weight. Shawn believes with the right attitude anything can be accomplished. Outside the J, you’ll find Shawn running, going to the beach, spending time with friends, strength training, and cooking. He also enjoys volunteering with young hoopers to help them become great basketball players. We are fortunate to have Shawn on staff. Meet our team of talented and experienced fitness professionals. Ryan Anest, Personal Trainer: My specialty is teaching people how to move their bodies. Lifting something off the ground with a neutral back, referred to as a deadlift in strength and conditioning, is a basic body movement that everyone should be able to perform throughout their life. With corrective exercise, I will teach your aging, compressed spine that it can do all the day-to-day tasks. Tara Atkinson, Yoga Therapist + Personal Trainer: When working with an individual, my first priority is to figure out what kind of exercise and movement they love and what their goals are. From there we can create a routine they are excited about that also helps them achieve their dreams. 2
Julie Brundage, Personal Trainer: I help those who are new to exercise or who have issues with chronic pain or other health-related challenges, to reach their fitness goals. As an Alexander Technique trained teacher I work with a client’s full body organization creating greater ease, efficiency, and use in all of their exercises and activities of daily living. Tyler Coleman, Personal Trainer: I believe that movement is a medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional, and mental states. By understanding body mechanics and applying it to everyday life, I help people create and reach their goals. Angie Fisher, Pilates Reformer Trainer: I infuse teaching with humor, enthusiasm, and a passion to help you achieve proper alignment and functional movement as well as whole body fitness. My motto is “Use your muscles, not your momentum!” Bill Haeuptle, Personal Trainer: I help clients achieve a better physical and mental lifestyle through fitness. I also discuss nutrition and hydration management to improve cardio stamina, balance, and coordinated strength and work with clients in post physical therapy rehabilitation. Payton Janssen, Personal Trainer: I love witnessing my clients work hard and accomplish their fitness goals, whether that goal is hiking up a mountain or safely getting inside their car. Alex Ness, Personal Trainer: I work to improve the quality of life for my clients. I specialize in strength and mobility training and pre/post rehab to name a few. I like being a part of a community of people to have long-term relationships with my clients, and I enjoy seeing their success over the years of growth and development. Dale Shaffer, Personal Trainer: My specialty is helping people restore, develop, and maintain a healthy body through muscular balance and proper joint function. I believe young athletes deserve proper training to help them build durable, highly efficient bodies allowing them to excel in their chosen sports, and the rest of us deserve to feel like kids again. Scott Southwell, Personal Trainer: My specialty is helping clients make permanent healthy lifestyle changes that help them reach their health and wellness goals. I’ve lost 130 pounds over the last three years, and I love using what I’ve learned to help others with their own weight loss journeys.

Big Truck Day 2019
Upcoming Events
Our 6th annual Big Truck Day event was another big hit here at the MJCC! Many of the usual vehicles made their grand appearance, including the ever-popular fire truck and police cars. New this year was a Lightning McQueen Corvette race car and an ambulance. The turquoise military Unimog returned, as well. Over near the live music, our community made crafts to take home. As a way to show appreciation for our first responders, one of the craft stations included thank you letters that are being sent to our local police and firefighters. Big Truck Day was a fun way to kick off the school year. Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate with us!

Year Three of the PDX Can Advertising Be Business Breakfast Series a Mitzvah? Now entering year three, the MJCC PDX Business Series will be building on its success and continuing to provide informative and educational opportunities relevant to business leaders across greater Portland. The MJCC is grateful to Portland State University which has been a three-year sponsor of the MJCC Business Series and which partnered with us for event space for meetings in year two. We are also grateful to our other sponsors: Richard Barker: Wealth Management Advisor of Merrill Lynch, Barry and Karla Benson, Opus Bank, Jonathan Singer of Barg Singer PC, The Jerry & Helen Stern Grandchildren’s Fund of OJCF, and Turner Construction who were sponsors in the first two years. We have also had events sponsored by moovel and Widmer Beer as well as John Emshwiller, and Jay Gilbert. For 2019-20, a volunteer advisory committee has helped us to develop our topics. We polled past participants to determine the topics of greatest interest moving forward. In year three our planned topics are: • Balancing Purpose and Profit: B Corps and the Social Enterprise Movement • Can Portland solve its homelessness problem? • Is Portland planning for 2020 and beyond? As Advisory Committee member, Dave Gallison, said, “The caliber of the panelists has stimulated, inspired, and expanded my knowledge boundaries every time; for instance, the three women Venture Capitalists were each exceptional in their own right and together forged a very compelling presentation about their success in a maledominated industry. Further, I always meet other interesting attendees resulting in future networking, so it’s a win-win with a decent breakfast to boot!“

Another Summer of Day Camp Fun Hundreds of campers joined us for a full summer of fun, games, educational activities and ruach (spirit)! We were even able to incorporate science lessons for some of our campers, thanks to a grant from OHSU’s Knight Community Partnership Program. In an effort to promote sun-safe behaviors, some campers received sun hats and science instruction, examining the harmful effects of the sun. We are grateful to OHSU and to the Uriel Medical Foundation of Bend who allowed us to adapt their SHADE (Sun Hat Awareness Distribution Education) program to a summer camp environment.

JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest® 2019!
100 Days of Fitness Winners For the third year in a row, the MJCC has participated in the JCCA-sponsored 100 Days of Fitness Challenge taking place between Memorial Day and Labor Day. We had 38 members and staff participate this year and provided t-shirts for everyone. Across all JCCs nationally, there were 803 participants at 28 JCCs. Total stats show that participants covered over 112,080 miles and took over 7,704 classes!
This past August, teen athletes represented Team Oregon at the 2019 JCC Maccabi Games® & ArtsFest®, for our fourth year in a row, in Detroit, Michigan. The JCC Maccabi Games® are an Olympic-style sporting competition held each summer in North America. The Games are the largest organized sports program for Jewish teenagers in the world, with over 100,000 teens having participated since 1982. The Games promote community involvement, teamwork, and Jewish pride in our teens. “I felt extremely proud of my Jewish heritage when we walked out at Opening Ceremonies and had thousands of people cheering for us,” said Benjamin Rosenfeld, one of Team Oregon’s 16u soccer players. “I played soccer for Team Portland as part of the JCC Maccabi Games in the early 90s,” said David Rosenberg, Assistant Coach of our Team Oregon Maccabi Games mixed soccer team. “Coming back to coach and see how this program still impacts teens to this day is an incredible sight to see. I even caught up with friends who played back when I was a kid!” Here are some of the highlights: Gold Medal - 16u Boys Lacrosse, Silver Medal - Table Tennis Singles, Silver Medal Table Tennis Doubles, Bronze Medal – 14u Boys Baseball. The MJCC is committed to ensuring that every teen interested in participating can. The total cost of the trip is approximately $1,700 per individual and, through sponsorship and grants, we are able to subsidize the cost so that it is only $1,100 per individual, with additional need-based financial aid available. We are the only JCC delegation in North America that offers this kind of subsidy. Thank you to all who support this program and help make the JCC Maccabi® experience a reality for our area youth. If you are interested in getting involved next summer for the 2020 JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest® as a sponsor or participant, please contact Jennifer Harrington at 503.535.3541 or jharrington@oregonjcc.org. 6
Two MJCC members received national recognition. Edna Kovacs continued to dominate among the walking participants to lead the rankings at 1,201.7 miles. (This is not to mention her hours on the cycle, cardio and in classes!) Mike Siegel also placed 5th nationally with 2,130 miles of cycling, despite taking a break while travelling.
New Women’s Programs Two programs designed exclusively for women are debuting at the MJCC this fall, thanks to generous grant funding from the Women’s Giving Circle of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland (JFGP). First up is Shimirat Haguf - Jewish Yoga for Women. This new yoga class, taught by Rachel Stern, is open to women of all ages and experience. Offered on Tuesday evenings in September and November, and Thursday evenings in October, the class offers a safe space in which to explore breath, functional movement, fluidity and resistance, strength, and relaxation in a community of women. MJCC member, Hannah Schafer, remarked, “I didn’t know it, but taking a yoga class with women from across Portland’s Jewish community was exactly what this busy working mom needed. The diversity of experience and range of Jewish observance among the participants made it even more special.” For more information, see page 31 in the MJCC Fall Program Guide. Launching in December is Bodies of Water, co-hosted by Rachel’s Well Community Mikvah (operated by the JFGP), and the MJCC. This class will be held on Sunday, December 15 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, and again on Tuesday, December 17 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. Caron Blau Rothstein, Director of Community Planning and Allocations at the JFGP, explains, “The Bodies of Water workshop gives women and girls a Jewish lens through which to nurture a positive body image. Together participants will learn about mindful eating, yoga/ meditation and the mikvah ritual - all tools to enhance body awareness and gratitude.” This unique class, created by Naomi Malka of the Adas Israel Community Mikvah in Washington, D.C., will explore how the mikvah is relevant in a modern Jewish life. For more information, contact Caron Blau Rothstein at caron@jewishportland.org or 503.245.6449.
How Do You J? Welcome to our new column, How Do You J? Each issue will feature proud MJCC members sharing a bit about themselves and explaining what keeps them coming back. If you have an idea for a member to feature, please contact Lisa Katon at lkaton@oregonjcc.org or 503.535.3532. Jim Drozdowski, MJCC member, is an avid runner. He is originally from Cherry Hill, New Jersey across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. Jim lives in Southwest Portland with his wife Johnna and daughter, Zoe, who is a junior at Wilson High School. He is the Chief Operating Officer at Aldrich Advisors, a professional services firm that provides tax, audit, wealth and benefits services. Jim leverages people, processes, and technology to enhance the firm’s ability to serve clients’ needs.
How long have you been a member of the J? While only being a member of the J for 18 months, I have been a part of the community for about a decade as my daughter Zoe was a Portland Jewish Academy student and my wife a member since Zoe was at PJA. How often do you come to the J and what do you do here? I come in on a daily basis. My cardio workout is split between swimming and/or running from the J to Gabriel Park or along the Terwilliger Road trail. I try to lift weights three times a week throughout the year. What makes the J different from other gyms? I don’t consider the J just a gym but a wonderful community that offers a diverse amount of activities for people of all ages including a wonderful pool and gym. What keeps you coming back? The people - particularly the staff, fellow swimmers and weight lifters. It’s really great to be part of a multi-generational community that cares for each other. Anything else you’d like to share? I gain a lot of inspiration from the older generation of members who are working out or getting together for social activities.
Ask the Expert: Jonathan Glass Investment Committee Chair and Board Member of the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation and Past Co-President of the MJCC and PJA Boards of Directors Question: I have heard about Donor Advised Funds for my Charitable Giving, and I am also interested in social valuesbased investing. What options are out there to bring these two opportunities together in Portland’s Jewish Community? Answer: Donor Advised Funds The donor-advised fund is a charitable giving vehicle established at a public charity such as the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation (OJCF). A DAF allows donors to (i) make a charitable contribution, (ii) receive an immediate tax deduction, and (iii) recommend grants to other charities from the fund over time. Gifts of appreciated stock to a DAF allow the donor to bypass capital gains in addition to enjoying the benefit of an immediate tax deduction for the full fair market value of the stock. This makes DAFs a win-win, tax efficient approach to charitable giving. In addition, the donor can then support charitable organizations over time by requesting grants from their donor advised fund, subject to the foundation board’s approval. At OJCF, the donor advised fund holder selects from different investment options or pools for the funds they have donated to the Foundation. The recent tax changes associated with the standard deduction have made DAFs an even more valuable tax tool for charitable giving, facilitating investors’ ability to give a larger donation at one time, referred to as “bunching,” and then grant funds to the community nonprofits over time.
Social Impact Investing and DAFs OJCF now offers a Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Pool. This is in keeping with an overall trend in SRI investing, also referred to as sustainable, responsible, and impact investing. US assets under management, using SRI strategies, grew from $8.7 trillion at the start of 2016 to $12 trillion at the start of 2018, an increase of 38%. I am pleased to share that OJCF is now offering a new investment pool option, the Jewish Advocacy Strategy Pool. OJCF has partnered with JLEN Environmental Assets Group Limited. The new pool takes the SRI concept in an exciting direction that allows an investor to consider Jewish values when choosing where their DAF funds are invested. JLENs uses a Jewish-values overlay to select a portfolio of approximately 300 of the most influential companies in the US that best align with overall Jewish values and that generate positive impact for the Jewish community and the world. Examples of these values include the obligations to the environment, society, coexistence, and workers. If you are interested in learning more about Donor Advised Funds including OJCF’s Jewish Advocacy Strategy, the professional team at OJCF is always available to provide guidance. Please call OJCF at 503.248.9328 for a confidential conversation about tax-wise and values-based charitable giving. 7
