PORTLAND JEWISH ACADEMY
TRANSFORMING LEARNING AT PJA 2017 - 2018
Annual Report
November 2018 Heshvan 5779
DEAR FRIENDS OF PJA, We are pleased to present Portland Jewish Academy’s annual report for the 2017-18/5778 fiscal year. This report highlights our financial strength, outlines our stewardship of funds, and celebrates our school, which experienced a 17% increase in middle school enrollment and a 7% increase in total day school enrollment for the 5779 (2018-19) academic year. This past year, PJA realized an important goal in the strategic plan: completion of the new PJA Learning Commons. This initiative transformed our library into an open, flexible, dynamic space that fosters collaborative inquiry and facilitates project based learning. The Learning Commons integrates educational technology with our library’s print and on-line resources to provide an exceptional venue for reading and research. This project also included a re-design of our Beit Midrash (“house of study”) into a flexible hall for teaching, learning, tefillah (“prayer”), and gatherings. In addition, we introduced a music studio, renovated our student kitchen, and added a private student lavatory. These new projects were made possible, in part, by the PJA Annual Auction and the support of our many donors. Each year, the Auction raises funds for a range of school projects and programs, most significantly for financial assistance that allows more than half of our day school students to attend PJA. In recent years, the Auction has also enabled us to add hundreds of thousands of dollars to the school’s endowment, building a stream of revenue to support financial assistance and school programs in perpetuity. Other transformative gifts this year included support from our PJA Family Giving Circle to enhance our outdoor programs with grants to create a natural habitat, an eco-friendly playground, and other dedicated outdoor spaces. Donations to underwrite our Israel trip have also helped to ensure that all 8th grade students have the opportunity to participate. Your generous support makes a significant impact upon the daily experience of each PJA student and enhances the teaching and learning that takes place in all of our school programs. We thank you for your contributions to PJA’s future. As we begin a new year, we continue to pursue the ongoing evolution of our outstanding school program, focusing on the development of 21st Century skills, such as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and analysis, and bringing our school together to strengthen the kehillah (“community”) that makes PJA unique. Thank you for partnering with us to support the school’s mission of ensuring an academically rich environment which honors the whole child, while nurturing and inspiring Jewish engagement, kavod (“respect”), and responsibility for the world in which we live.
B’shalom,
Steven Klein President, Board of Directors

LEARNING COMMONS At any given moment during

excitement, laughter, or curiosity. The space is often filled with students and teachers
working independently or collaboratively with their peers. Learning is tactile and inspiring. The space is designed to accommodate an array of activities simultaneously: a preschool class may be listening to a story while a group of middle school students work on a video animation project on the iMacs, all while a lower school teacher works on math with a group of third graders.
The Learning Commons has transformed the teaching and learning experience at PJA. Now, our library collection, technology support, computer workstations and multipurpose work areas are integrated into one space, so that students of all ages have convenient access to the spaces and resources they need to learn and grow.

The best part of the Learning Commons is having a lot of open space to work with friends, read a book or study for a test. - Isaac Cissna, PJA 7th Grader

happen on a regular basis. The Beit Midrash provides a space for a multitude of learning opportunities.
The room is used for everything from lower school Shabbat celebrations, to middle school project work, and more. The flexibility of the space makes it perfect for tefillah, class discussions, and group collaboration.
The extensive Judaica library encourages students to look up sources from Jewish texts and practice their primary source skills. Our Beit Midrash provides a quiet and sacred space to have class meetings and practice becoming a rodef shalom (“pursuer of peace”). The Beit Midrash encourages students and teachers to learn and grow together in a variety of exciting ways.

The Beit Midrash is both a quiet space to study, and a Jewish space that feels more a part of the school than when it was the chapel. - Seth Rosenfeld, PJA 7th Grader
KITCHEN Our upgraded kitchen allows us to do more cooking and baking, and gives students the ability to connect with each other through food! In years past, we used small appliances for all of our cooking projects, and had to use ovens in another part of the building. Now, with a full stove and oven in one area, we have everything we need in one space. These upgrades have made it easy for us to utilize the flourishing PJA garden to prepare an array of healthy and delicious meals and treats for students and faculty to enjoy.

MUSIC STUDIO
The many changes and additions to our Music Studio have provided many new opportunities for musical growth and exploration! With a new set of keyboards, we are able to dive in to music theory as students’ musical development is encouraged at their own pace, and tailored toward their individual interests. Our guitar wall has allowed a group of middle schoolers to collaborate through a Guitar Exploratory, where these students learn together, then lead our school in song at school gatherings. This year, we will be able to focus on rhythms and drum patterns from different cultures as we take part in drum circle workshops with our class set of brand new djembes.
The Music Studio is also home to our Early Childhood Music program. The Studio houses instruments and equipment appropriate for our youngest students to dance and sing their hearts out. Much fun and learning happens here as we continue to cultivate community with music!
