PORTLAND JEWISH ACADEMY
2015 - 2016 Annual Report
As a jewish day school we strive to ensure an academically rich environment which honors the whole child. Portland Jewish Academy nurtures and inspires Jewish engagement, kavod/respect, and responsibility for the world in which we live. Adopted by the PJA Board of Directors 9/15/2016
October 2016 Tishrei 5777
Dear Friends of PJA, We are pleased to present Portland Jewish Academy’s annual report for the 2015-16/5776 academic year. This report describes our stewardship of funds, highlights our financial health, and celebrates many of the achievements of the past year. Your support of PJA has a significant impact upon the daily experiences of our students and the achievements of our school as a whole, and we thank you for your generosity. This year brought a number of exciting initiatives, many of which focused on empowering individual students and ensuring that we are meeting the needs of each student. Throughout the year, our faculty engaged in workshops and discussions encompassing our anti-bias curriculum initiative. Anti-bias education seeks to help children demonstrate self-awareness; express comfort and joy with diversity; recognize unfairness; and feel empowered to act against prejudice. Our faculty identified opportunities for PJA to be a more inclusive community through careful choices about communication and activities within and outside of our classrooms. We also introduced the Rodef Shalom curriculum in our middle school, developed by the PARDES Institute in Jerusalem. This program focuses on teaching conflict resolution through the exploration of Jewish text. Finally, we opened our brand new Makerspace – a dynamic, interdisciplinary space that allows students to build and create using tools and materials that are traditional as well as high-tech. Beyond the daily work in the classroom, our school began to work on several strategic initiatives. Foremost of these efforts was the development of a new strategic plan to identify priorities for PJA in the coming three to five years. Our planning process centered around four broad themes: school identity, student success, financial strength, and enrollment management. The various committees included Board members; PJA parents, grandparents, alumni parents and alumni; community members; and faculty and staff. We gathered input and feedback from the entire school community. This work has been exciting and is nearly complete; we look forward to sharing the final plan in early 2017. There were myriad opportunities made possible this year through the generous contributions of members of our extended PJA community. These included a new school garden, the adoption of new classroombased technology, and new service learning programs. Other important gifts and grants supported our tuition assistance program and our 8th grade trip to Israel. Our commitment to serving every member of our diverse community allows Portland Jewish Academy to provide an education program that is innovative, inspiring and individualized. We are proud to be your partners in educating the Jewish leaders of tomorrow as we teach them to think for themselves and work for the world.

Think for Yourself. Makerspace
Living as a Writer
Rodef Shalom
Innovation and hands-on learning come together in our new space designed for creative problem-solving through construction, art and technology.
PJA writers shine in three statewide writing contests: • The Oregon Poetry Association (6 students & 2 alumni winners) • Honoring Our Rivers (3 fifth grade winners) • Sala Kryszek Art & Writing Competition (1 eighth grade winner)
Our Middle School students engage with Jewish texts that model for us the ideals of pursuing peace and constructive conflict, allowing us to better understand our own values and motivations, bringing us closer to our ancestors, each other, and ourselves.
Work for the World. Better Together Grant with Cedar Sinai Park Through a generous grant from the Legacy Heritage Fund, our middle schoolers are experiencing the benefits of intergenerational learning by building relationships with seniors at Cedar Sinai Park where they meet monthly to help learn and lead prayer and Shabbat services.
Anti-Bias Education
Garden Program
Anti-Bias Education (ABE) creates an inclusive, safe environment for all members of our community, and allows us to reflect and make changes as we come to understand these concepts and how they affect us.
The PJA Garden Program is thriving thanks to the hardworking efforts of our afterschool Garden Club, its faculty advisors, Tivnu volunteers, and MJCC and PJA summer campers who watered, weeded and harvested throughout the summer.
