November 2019 Cheshvan 5780
DEAR FRIENDS OF PJA, We are pleased to present Portland Jewish Academy’s Annual Report for the 2018-19/5779 fiscal year. This report highlights our financial strength, outlines our stewardship of funds, and celebrates our thriving school. Our school’s motto is: Think for Yourself, Work for the World. At PJA, students work for the world and engage in tikkun olam (“repairing the world”) in a host of ways. Under the umbrella of our service learning program, students of every age engage in service to the community in numerous settings. From addressing the needs of those experiencing food insecurity and helping the homeless, to offering companionship and collecting school supplies and household items for those in need, PJA students are making a difference. We are proud to highlight these and other efforts in our Annual Report. Our service learning program is possible, in part, because of you – our generous donors. The support we receive from grants, foundations and individuals provides over 15% of the school’s annual revenue. Philanthropic gifts support academic and extracurricular programs, professional development and financial assistance. In particular, the PJA Annual Auction raises funds for a broad range of school programs, most significantly for financial assistance that allows more than half of our Day School students to attend PJA. In recent years, the Auction has also enabled us to add hundreds of thousands of dollars to the School’s endowment, building a stream of revenue to support financial assistance and school programs in perpetuity. Other transformative gifts this year once again included support from our PJA Family Giving Circle to fund teacherdeveloped initiatives and donations to underwrite our 8th graders’ trip to Israel. Our new Atid (“future”) Fund, an endowed fund started by families of the Class of 2019, will further enable our endowment to support financial assistance and the annual Israel trip. We thank you for your contributions to PJA’s future. Your generous support makes an impact on every PJA student every day. Thank you for partnering with us to support the School’s mission and ensure that our students learn to think for themselves and work for the world.
B’shalom,

MLK DAY OF SERVICE 8TH GRADE CAPSTONE PROJECTS
MIDDLE SCHOOL SHELTER FEEDS
A “day off” can be a “day on” when close to 100 members of the PJA community come together to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by doing projects that benefit those in need. Stations included putting together care bags for those living on the streets, folding origami boxes for the Soul Box Project, making placemats for Meals on Wheels clients, braiding old t-shirts into toys for Oregon Dog Rescue, assembling family tzedakah boxes out of recycled materials, and so much more. The PJA lobby, Beit Midrash, and various classrooms were buzzing with activity as Middle School volunteers led participants in a multitude of service projects, thereby adding much meaning to our MLK Day observance.
Each year, PJA 8th graders embark on a very special Capstone journey. What may, at first glance, look like a really great school assignment that prepares students for the work they will be doing in high school and beyond, is actually a year-long experiential dive into what it means to be an informed and responsible community member. The year starts with students designing and implementing a service project that connects them to an issue of interest. Students then research an aspect of their project to better understand its impact on the local or global community. The year culminates with our young changemakers integrating their Jewish Studies learning with their service work and research studies in the form of a “drash” (teaching). Students deliver their drash to the whole Middle School community, thereby deepening their understanding of what it means to “work for the world.”
Thanks to a special grant from the Women’s Giving Circle of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland and other generous donors, Middle School students were able to cook and serve dinner at several different shelters throughout the year including Jean’s Place, Clark Center, Willamette Center, and the Safety Off the Street Shelter. Over 600 shelter residents were treated to delicious and nutritious fare prepared by students, including crowd pleasers such as enchiladas, mac and cheese, and tuna melts, along with tasty seasonal salads, fresh fruit, and decadent desserts such as cherry chocolate cobbler and homemade brownies. In addition, the 30 middle school servers got the opportunity to greet residents, fill their plates, and hear their frequent and heartfelt compliments about the meal.

OREGON ISLAMIC ACADEMY
PARTNERSHIP
B’YACHAD
PLASTIC MATS 6
Building on a most wonderful partnership that began with a pen-pal project between Middle School students from Oregon Islamic Academy and Portland Jewish Academy, then enriched by a joint theater experience focusing on Mohammad Ali, 2018-19 was filled with several exciting gettogethers between the two schools. In April, PJA hosted OIA for a fun morning of getting-to-know you activities and doing service projects together. Then, in May, PJA traveled to OIA for a studentled lesson about Ramadan and a chance to discuss similarities and differences between Judaism and Islam. Many sweet friendships have come from these meetings, including several PJA 7th graders traveling to OIA for a viewing of the documentary “Science Fair.” Others have kept up email correspondence and met outside of school. The coming school year will bring more opportunities for inter-faith explorations and relationship building.
Intergenerational learning with the seniors at Rose Schnitzer Manor is one of the highlights of 7th graders’ experiences at PJA. Once a month, the students travel to RSM to learn with and from the residents there. With the weekly Torah portion as the springboard for discussion, youthful curiosity and earned wisdom are shared. Partners relish their time together! Each May, family members of both students and residents are invited to a delicious dinner so that these special relationships can extend beyond the individual participants and beyond the school day. Partners share birthdays and bar and bat mitzvah celebrations. Deep friendships are further nurtured by quarterly lunch-and-learn sessions for 8th graders and their partners and the RSM mentors at a graduation lunch in June.
Got plarn? Of course, you do! Almost everyone has plarn, most without even knowing it. Plarn is a made up word representing a solution to a real world problem. Plastic yarn, or plarn, is made from strips of plastic grocery bags that are looped together so that they can be used to crochet large sleeping mats for those living outdoors. The mats are waterproof, bug proof, and easy to carry; plus they keep pesky plastic bags out of the oceans and landfills. PJA is proud to have been invited to be part of a community-wide initiative to contribute to the plarn effort so that talented crafters can make the plarn balls into something immensely useful for a population in need.

The reason I like the Work for the World Club is because you are doing good things for your community while having tons of fun.

My favorite volunteer project so far has been volunteering at the Blanchet House because it’s been a real eye opener for me to see just a fraction of the hungry people in Portland, as well as actually doing something to help. These opportunities have led me to consider volunteering in the future, and I feel like that’s what volunteering is supposed to do.

The Service Learning program at PJA encourages us to live our Jewish values beyond the walls of our school. Being out in the community widens our lens and deepens our understanding, empathy, and commitment to those in need.

My favorite volunteer projects are definitely going to the Blanchet House. I love going there because it’s fun to run around serving people and see how happy people get when they have a plate of food in front of them, especially when they haven’t eaten in awhile. As well as feeling and knowing that you made a difference, even if it’s just a small one compared to the world it could be giant in someone’s day.
