Portland and Beyond Portland Jewish Academy

ANNUAL REPORT 2021-22

DEAR FRIENDS OF PJA,

We are pleased to present Portland Jewish Academy’s Annual Report for the 2021-22/5782 fiscal year. Throughout the year, we expanded our programming and the opportunities for our students, while ensuring the health and safety of everyone in our community. Among our greatest joys were the return of many beloved PJA traditions, including day-long and overnight field trips, class plays and presentations, and our 8th grade trip to Israel. We could not have accomplished all that we did without the generous philanthropic support of the extended PJA community. This report highlights the impact of those gifts and celebrates all that our school has accomplished in the last year.

The year began with the complete, in-person reopening of all of our offerings in the Early Childhood, Day School, and Afterschool programs. While there were still many health and safety requirements in place – from masking and social distancing to cohorting and quarantining following positive contact – we were delighted to bring all of our students back into the building all day, every day. As the year progressed, many of the requirements were relaxed, and school began to feel more and more “normal.” Along with this came expanded opportunities for service learning; exciting “taglit” offerings in our middle school, both on and off campus; trips to downtown Portland, Outdoor School, Ashland, and Israel; class plays and other presentations; and, by the end of the year, opportunities to gather for special events, such as our “Key Ceremony” and graduation.

Our success throughout the year was possible because of you – our generous donors. We were able to increase teacher compensation – in every program – to enable PJA to attract and retain outstanding teachers, a particular challenge given the post-pandemic economy and labor market. We were able to provide need-based financial assistance to ensure that no one is denied a PJA education due to lack of financial resources. We were able to purchase the supplies and equipment necessary to support a fully in-person program, as the pandemic wore on. As always, philanthropic gifts were essential in allowing us to address these priorities. This continues to be the case, as the on-going challenging economic environment continues to generate budgetary pressures for PJA.

The Annual PJA Auction was a big success, with community members joining us both virtually and at in-person watch parties on campus and throughout Portland to celebrate our school. The Auction supports school operations, primarily financial assistance, and it also generates emergency reserve funds for unanticipated expenses. In addition, the Auction has grown the school’s endowment, building a stream of revenue to support PJA in perpetuity.

Your generous support makes an impact on every PJA student every day and ensures a robust future for our school. Thank you for your partnership, ensuring that our students learn to think for themselves and work for the world.

Welcome

PLAY PORTLAND

Our 3rd graders’ study of the City of Portland culminated in a lovely performance. The students told the history of our city in stories and songs, sharing what they’d learned from their studies in the classroom and on field trips. The performance highlighted many unique aspects of Portland, from the bridges to the streetcars, and included videos, as well. It was wonderful to be able to gather as a community to learn from our 3rd grade students!

GREETING CARDS UKRAINE

Fifth grade students, studying issues of social justice and government throughout the year, knew they needed to act when learning about the Russian assault on Ukraine. Students brainstormed ways in which to raise money to assist the Ukrainian people. In their research about the country, they learned that the sunflower was the national flower of Ukraine, and that it was being used in many ways as a symbol of resistance and support. The students opted to design and print note cards with their beautiful artwork to sell to the PJA community. Each 5th grader designed a small work of art using a variety of media, and each featured a sunflower or sunflowers in some way. Many of them also featured the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag. In all they raised over $3,900 and donated all proceeds to UNICEF, selected for its singular focus on children.

ELIANNA BEARD ALUM

Portland Jewish Academy graduate Elianna Beard scored the winning goal in the final game of the Women’s National Cup in Israel. Her team, FC Kiryat Gat, won the National Cup with a score of 2-0 on May 30. “I scored the first goal,” says Eli. “When I look back on my career, it’s definitely one of the most memorable moments for me.” Eli started playing soccer when she was 8. She played club soccer in Portland and then joined her high school and college soccer teams. “I started my professional career in 2018 playing in Champions League with a team from Kazakhstan. I made Aliyah (moved to Israel) in 2019, and this is my fourth season playing in the Israeli league,”says Eli. The daughter of Peter and Leslie Beard, Eli graduated from PJA in 2010. She attended St. Mary’s Academy for high school and graduated from Marquette University in 2018. FC Kiryat Gat won the league and the Athena Cup, in addition to the National Cup this season. “Winning the league with my team was incredible,” she says. “I’ve put in a lot of work to get to this level but really wouldn’t be here without all the support from back home.”

CHILDHOOD EARLY

This year for Hanukkah we wanted to shine a light on our EC community. This came in the form of an art installation just outside our Early Childhood entrance. Each classroom took pictures of each child in our community in black and white. We printed these on transparent paper and hung them alongside white lights. We used the Jewish Lens of B’tzelem Elohim (Divine Image/Each Child’s Unique Self) to reflect on each child’s uniqueness and individual light. It was beautiful to see each child and family interact with their picture and the pictures of the children in their community. I overheard children saying to their parents, “See this picture, this is my best friend.” Looking at these faces, we are reminded that when days seem dark, our school is filled with the brightest lights.

AFTERSCHOOL BACK TO ISRAEL

Our monthly themes and activities always include service learning elements. This year’s themes included learning from and about the ways different cultures celebrate new years, harvest festivals, and giving thanks. We also had a theme which introduced food, artists and craftspeople from indigenous cultures around the world. Cultural elements from Salish, Iroquois, Creek, Lakota, Mexica, Quechua, Saami, Ainu, Australian Aboriginal, Pacific Islander, Maasai, and Zulu were shared with students, along with other cultural groups, as well.

PJA’s Class of 2022 was the first class to make it to Israel since 2019. Twenty-seven students were accompanied by three teacher chaperones, Larisa Lerner, Matt Rosenberg, and Shahar Eden, as well as experienced guides from Ramah Israel Institute. Some highlights included celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut, floating in the Dead Sea, visiting Masada, admiring the art of Tsfat, sandboarding, praying at the Kotel, packing food at a food bank, visiting Ben Gurion’s grave, touring Yad Vashem, and exploring Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

ANNUAL AUCTION!

PJA’s 2021 Auction, celebrating the school’s 60th anniversary, was a smashing success! The event, dubbed the Portland Jewish “Academy Awards” Auction, was designed with safety in mind. Those who wanted to attend in person joined us in the MJCC’s Ballroom for a night of glamour and glitz, while those who preferred to stay home and bid in their jammies, were able to do so, too.

We raised over $784,000 for PJA, ensuring we can provide ample tuition assistance, robust professional development opportunities, the latest technology, and all the “extras” that make PJA the very special school it is. We are deeply grateful to each and every donor who supported our 2021 Auction, helping to make it such a remarkable success. From our sponsors and Mitzvah Moment donors, to our Auction item donors, we truly couldn’t have done it without you. A heartfelt thank you to our Community Grand Patrons, Jay and Diane Zidell, who matched all sponsorships and Mitzvah Moment donations, and Steve “Rosy” Rosenberg and Ellen Lippman, who provided an additional 50% match.

The annual PJA Auction truly is the “party of the year,” and this year was no exception!
