a Sense of Belonging

PORTLAND JEWISH ACADEMY Annual Report 2022-23

OUR MISSION

is to ensure an academically excellent environment in which children thrive. Portland Jewish Academy nurtures and inspires positive Jewish engagement, kavod/respect for human and religious differences, and responsibility for the world in which we live.

November 2023 Cheshvan 5784 Dear Friends of PJA, We are delighted to present Portland Jewish Academy’s Annual Report for the 2022-23/5783 fiscal year. Our theme for the last school year was “belonging,” and that theme frames this report. We celebrate the many ways in which our students experience belonging, from their PJA community, to their family, to the local Jewish community, to the wider world. We could not have accomplished all that we did without the generous philanthropic support of the extended PJA community. This report highlights the impact of those gifts and celebrates all that our school has accomplished in the last year. This past year provided the chance to resume beloved activities and events that had been suspended due to the pandemic as well as to offer students new opportunities. We are excited to share the details of programs like B’Yachad, our new 7th grade trip to Los Angeles, and many others in these pages. These programs create a profound sense of belonging among our students. As a school community, we also focused on enhancing belonging as we continue our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, highlighted in the past year by the completion of a new Diversity Statement. Our success throughout the year was possible because of you – our generous donors. We were once again able to increase teacher compensation – in every program – to enable PJA to attract and retain outstanding teachers. We were able to provide over $1 million in need-based financial assistance to ensure that no one is denied a PJA education due to lack of financial resources. We were able to offer unique experiences in the classroom and in the wider community to enrich our outstanding educational program. As always, philanthropic gifts were essential to enabling us to meet these goals. This continues to be the case, as the on-going challenging economic environment continues to generate budgetary pressures for PJA. The Annual PJA Auction was a big success, with community members joining us for a fun and engaging hybrid event to celebrate our school. Every gift and sponsorship is meaningful and appreciated. The Auction supports PJA students, primarily through financial assistance, and also generates reserve funds for strategic priorities. In addition, the Auction has grown the school’s endowment, building a stream of revenue to support PJA in perpetuity. Your generous support has an impact on each student every day, and it ensures a promising future for PJA. Thank you for your partnership in helping our students learn to “think for themselves and work for the world.” B’shalom,

Jason Zidell Steve Albert Merrill Hendin Board President Executive Director Principal

Belonging

AT PJA

Belonging

in the Classroom Each one of our over 300 students is taught to “think for themselves and work for the world.” This approach to education develops critical thinking skills, community awareness, and compassion, all of which are fundamental to creating a sense of belonging that is established in the classroom and applied later in life. At PJA, our students intentionally incorporate Jewish values into their academic studies. Social/emotional learning fosters friendship, curiosity, and understanding and can be seen in programs such as the summer reading program where students explore themes of identity, and return to the classroom for discussion and reflection together.

4

Belonging

in the Community Service learning is a key component of PJA programming with projects encouraging students to take part in their community, to learn about caring for one another, and to connect to the greater needs of humanity. Our partnership with Cedar Sinai Park and the return of the B’Yachad (together) program is exemplary of our school’s commitment to community. 8th grade students meet with residents of the assisted living facility monthly to simply spend time together, visiting and getting to know one another.

Belonging

in the World Tikkun olam (repairing the world) is a core Jewish value that teaches responsibility for the world around us. This year, we launched a new 7th grade trip, focused on social justice and in partnership with Tzedek America, which provides students with a chance to put their values into action. Students learned about immigration, homelessness, and racial justice, and they also explored the L.A. Jewish community and met Jewish students from Pressman Academy. Our 8th graders ventured even further into the world with their culminating trip to Israel.

5

Belonging

with Friends Our PJA students foster a sense of belonging through daily interactions across grade levels to develop friendships and take care of each other. This can be seen in the buddy program which partners younger students with students in higher grades for one-on-one time centered around activities such as reading, homework help, and play. Our Mishpachah (family) Program creates multi-age “families” of students who come together regularly to learn about and celebrate Jewish holidays.

Belonging with Family

At PJA, we are fortunate to have a supportive group of parents who make up our Kehillah (Community) Organization and spearhead staff appreciation events, community art projects, fundraising efforts and fun activities such as trivia nights. These dedicated parents engage with both students and teachers to celebrate the amazing community we have here and create the foundation of a collaborative environment that uplifts our students and staff.

ANNUAL AUCTION! We had colorful Hawaiian shirts and flip flops, undersea creatures, and even an elegantly-dressed quartet from 1761 who joined us for the PJA Beach Party ‘61 Auction on Sunday, December 11. With over 200 guests in the room and another 44 households online, it was a wildly successful night, raising $750,000 for PJA! Both auctioneer Ian Lindsay and emcee Josh Kashinsky were together on stage, live, for the very first time. They, too, embraced the beachy vibe, drinking out of pineapples and wearing matching Hawaiian shirts, custom-designed with images of Aish, our PJA mascot. All sponsorships, as well as all of the Mitzvah Moment donations, were generously matched at 100% by Jay and Diane Zidell and at 50% by Steve “Rosy” Rosenberg and Ellen Lippman. We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of these two families who, for many years, have inspired waves of giving across the community, ensuring that PJA has the resources it needs to continue to provide outstanding opportunities for our students. PJA is a very special place and that was truly evident on December 11. The generous spirit of all who know, love and support PJA is truly unmatched. Todah Rabah, thank you, to all who made our 2022 auction such a remarkable success!
