Welcome Dear Friends, The sun is back! Summertime in Portland is a special season, and all of us strive to be outdoors as much as possible. For that reason, we’re focused on the opportunity to be outdoors in the next few months.

Steve Albert NEW this summer is our Summer Concert Series! These concerts provide yet another great opportunity to enjoy the beautiful outdoor summer weather. Thanks to grants from the Jewish Community Center Association, The Holzman Foundation, and the Leonard and Lois Schnitzer Charitable Supporting Foundation, we’ll be offering three concerts on the MJCC lawn. Kim Schneiderman kicks-off the series on July 16, and Nefesh Mountain joins us on August 10. Our closing concert, presenting the Maccabeats, is not to be missed on August 27! Finally, if you haven’t yet seen our inaugural exhibit in our new lobby art gallery, featuring the artwork of Fred Harwin, be sure to check it out! This new space was funded by the Oregon Cultural Trust and the Kostiner Cultural Education Fund for the MJCC and will present a broad range of art exhibitions throughout the year. Thanks for making the J a part of your summer! Warm regards,

Steve Albert Executive Director

For those unfamiliar with this powerful program, the JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest® is a week-long sports and arts event where thousands of Jewish teens ages 13 - 16 meet, compete, and have a great time, creating memories that last a lifetime. The energy and excitement of the JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest® make this a unique and unforgettable experience for each participant and give our teens the opportunity to be a part of a larger Jewish community.

As we continue to grow our program, we are looking to YOU for support! The program is expensive, and we subsidize the cost for all participants, in addition to providing additional, need-based aid. We are very grateful to The Jewish Federation of Greater Portland and the Holzman Foundation for their 2017 strong support. Many individuals in our community have also provided financial support, and we hope you will consider joining JCC Maccabi Games + ArtsFest them. For further information about the JCC Maccabi Games® or other youth activities, please contact Len Steinberg at lsteinberg@oregonjcc.org or 503.535.3555.

Childcare

Last summer, the MJCC was fortunate enough to bring 20 teen athletes to St. Louis, MO for the JCC Maccabi Games®. It was truly inspiring to see teens from Portland represent our state on a national level. It was evident that the Games had a long-lasting impact on each of them. We are delighted that at least two Portlandarea student athletes are playing on the USA national basketball team at the Maccabiah Games in Israel! This year, we are excited to say that we will have another delegation of 20 athletes from Oregon. The 2017 Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest will take place in Miami, FL on August 6 - 10, 2017.

Did you Know? Incight

Jennifer Wilde, Incight’s Independence Program Director, is grateful for the ongoing partnership with the MJCC. According to her, “the venue is perfect for electric hockey – accessible and convenient location, and affordable rental fees allow for regular programming for our athletes. Valuing the niche population of Incight’s athletes, our friends at MJCC have generously removed every barrier to enable our program to grow and thrive.”

Support

In September 2016, the MJCC received a Community Engagement Grant of $1,000 from the Oregon Health & Science University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) in partnership with its Community Partners Council (CPC). This grant helps support our ongoing partnership with Incight for its electric cart hockey program that practices regularly in our gymnasium. Incight is a 501(c) (3) non-profit that supports and empowers key life aspects of education, employment, and independence for people with disabilities. Thanks to our partnership, which began in 2014, Incight uses our gymnasium, at a greatly reduced rate, for this exciting adaptive sport, designed specifically for power-chair users. Twice a month, athletes like Floyd Miller participate in this exhilarating sport, where teams of three players zip around in specialized chairs that go about 10 miles an hour. According to Floyd, “Electric hockey gives me the ability to be competitive, and social, and provides an outlet for energy that otherwise could go to waste.”
