We’re back! We’re very excited to present our first seasonal guide in two years. The fact that we have so many in-person programs and services that we need a guide is a testament to just how much is happening at the J! We are thrilled to have so many members and guests coming through our doors. Membership has grown by 60 percent in the past year and continues to expand every month! What’s bringing members in? All sorts of things! Soccer leagues, gym hockey, basketball, and racquetball all have very strong participation. (The State of Oregon doesn’t require masks when actively participating in a competitive sport.) Adult swimmers are enjoying our new Stingrays Masters program, as well as Aquapower, Aqua HIIT, Aquarobics, lap swimming, and open swim, while younger swimmers are competing in our Stingrays Swim Team or learning to swim in private lessons. We currently have 27 group exercise classes meeting in-person each week, and many members have resumed their personal training and/or massage sessions. We’re offering a wide array of afterschool classes for youth, ranging from gymnastics, Tae Kwon Do, and rock climbing, to art, and chess, as well as traditional sports, such as baseball, volleyball, soccer, and football. As always, members can use the fitness center, the cafe, the saunas, steam rooms, and whirlpools. We’ve undertaken a great deal of maintenance and repairs to ensure that everything is in good working order. (Due to labor shortages and supply chain issues, some projects are still ongoing.) For those who enjoy virtual programming, we offer 18 virtual group exercise classes each week along with a wide range of virtual programs from author talks to family holiday celebrations to Mah Jongg classes and more! Our collaborations with other JCCs enable us to bring you a wide range of offerings throughout the year. There’s lots more to come! We’re planning an incredible summer day camp program for children ages 3-15. We’re expanding our staff as quickly as we can in order to expand our hours and offerings. And we’re continuing to enhance the campus with security enhancements and a refreshed lobby. Look for all new lobby furniture scheduled to arrive in mid-2022! See you at the J!

Art Gallery Exhibit: The Passover Series
Join members of the community for a discussion in Hebrew. Purchase lunch or just enjoy the conversation. Some conversational Hebrew required. In person at the MJCC and on Zoom Every other Tuesdays at 12:15 pm
Shlomo Katz, Polish/Israeli, 1937-1992 Born in Lodz, Poland, Shlomo Katz immigrated to Palestine when he was just 8 years old in 1945. Katz developed an original technique of oil painting on a gilded metal surface. The result recalls medieval icons on the one hand, and oriental miniatures on the other. However, these ancient resources combine to form a totally modern image with a light humorous touch and a noble character. It took a lot of experimentation to translate these images to the graphic art form. The metallic inks of the golden tones and the importance of absolute registration presented just a part of the challenge, but the Katz serigraphs became the ultimate in modern printmaking. Exhibit on display April 15 - 24

SUPPORT THE MJCC! Here is what your generous tax-deductible donation to the MJCC supports: • Scholarships to benefit seniors on fixed incomes and others in need. We are committed to ensuring that no one is ever turned away due to an inability to pay. • Arts and cultural programming that puts the “Jewish” in MJCC. • Repairs and maintenance for our aging warm water pool which provides therapeutic healing for members who need it most. • Day camp scholarships. • New equipment in the fitness center, facility upgrades and so much more! For over 100 years, the Mittleman Jewish Community Center has been the “living room” of Portland’s Jewish Community. Many people come through the doors of the MJCC during non pandemic times, and thousands utilize our facilities as members. Membership, program fees, and rentals account for approximately 86% of our annual revenue, and we are dependent upon donations and grants to make up the difference. Over the years, our programs and services have evolved and expanded, but our mission remains unchanged—to enrich our community by providing for the social, cultural, educational, and recreational needs of the Jewish community, and serving as a common meeting place for the entire community. Please consider a Sustaining Membership, or a monthly donation to support programming at the MJCC.
Ensure the future of the MJCC by giving a Legacy gift.
