Welcome Dear Friends, I am often asked if things slow down at the MJCC in the summer, and the answer is a resounding “no!” While it’s true that more of our members choose to bike and run outdoors, the campus is buzzing with activity and excitement all summer long. Below is my list, in no particular order, of 10 can’t-be-missed events and programs.

While this list is by no means exhaustive, it’s a great taste of the exciting activities that we have planned.

Cafe at the J is Portland’s only kosher dairy restaurant certified by Oregon K and offers sandwiches, soups, salads, pizza, falafel, pasta, bagels, and more! It is located inside the MJCC. Surf the net while you enjoy the cafe. We offer free wireless Internet access.

Pool Accessibility Lift

The MJCC Aquatic Center has two accessibility lifts for those patrons who need assistance getting into and out of the pools. Our main pool lift is self-operated and has a weight capacity of 300 pounds. Our warm water pool lift is operated by our staff and has a weight limit of 250 pounds.

Swim Lessons Swim Lesson Assessment

We are pleased to offer free swim lesson assessments to participants who are new to our program. During the assessment, one of our instructors will lead your child through a series of skills to determine their appropriate level. Please call ahead to schedule your assessment.

Although the MJCC offers class levels such as Angelfish and Blowfish together, we teach to each child’s ability. (See page 7 for swim lesson levels.) On occasion, we split or combine the classes based on skill level.

Enrollment FAQs • You may register online, or in person at the Guest Services Desk.

• Payment must be provided at time of registration to guarantee spot.

• Enrollment is accepted up until the half-way point of the session.

• Class fees may be prorated after the third class.

• Swim lesson registration fee does not include open swim before/after class. As always, all persons participating in open swim must pay the daily admission fee or use their membership card before entering the pools. Supervision policy applies.

Accommodating Waitlists

All programs operate with minimum enrollment requirements and maximum enrollment capacities. We reserve the right to cancel, change, or combine programs when minimum program enrollments have not been met.

Itty Bitty Pool Party

Join us in the warm water pool with pool toys, music, and good times! *Parents must accompany children in the water.

Once a program is filled, a waiting list will be created. You will be called if an opening becomes available or if additional classes are created. Note: If additional classes are created, they may not be at the same time or day as the original program.

Note: swim diapers with tight fitting waist and legs required for children not yet potty trained.

Swim Lesson Levels Private + Semi-Private Lessons

Angelfish: Intro to Water Ratio 1:5

Private: 5 x 1/2 hour Cost: $255. Member Cost: $180.

Learn water entry, bubble blowing, kicking, floating, and underwater exploration. Warm Pool

Blowfish: Fundamental Water Skills Ratio 1:5

Crocodile: Stroke Development Ratio 1:5

Learn front and back crawl and elementary backstroke.

Work on endurance and treading water. Practice swimming 25 yards. Prerequisites: Child can float on front and back and swim 15 feet independently without floatation. Child is comfortable going under water and entering the deep end of the pool. Warm Pool and Main Pool

Contact our Guest Services Desk to fill out a private swim lesson request form. Our swim lesson coordinator, Brianna Newman, will contact you.

Stingrays Swim Team (Ages 7 + Older)

Develop proper technique and learn the basics of competitive swimming to participate in USA Swimming meets. Increase swimming endurance while making new friends. Prerequisites: Must be able to swim 100 yards each of freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke.

Main Pool Join the team at any time during the season. For a tryout, contact Head Coach Jennie Condon at jcondon@oregonjcc.org or call 503.452.3433.

Practice Schedule: June 1 - July 28

Improve front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, and treading water. Learn the basics of breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, and standing dives.

Prerequisites: Understands the basic concepts of front crawl and back crawl, is comfortable swimming 25 yards and comfortable in deep water, is able to perform a sitting and kneeling dive. Main Pool

Bronze: Monday - Thursday: 4:30 - 5:30 pm Cost: $100. Member Cost: $65 month.

The MJCC Aquatics department is recruiting potential staff! Bring your swim suit and goggles. You must be able to swim 300 yards without stopping, tread water for two minutes with no hands, and retrieve a brick from the bottom of the deep end of the pool and bring it to the shallow end.

Each session: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Must attend all class sessions. $100 class fee.

Fee will be reimbursed if you are hired by the MJCC. Ages 15 and over (16 and over to be hired by the MJCC)

Prerequisites: • 300 yard swim breast and/or freestyle.

• Dive 10 feet to retrieve brick and swim with it.

• Tread 2 minutes without hands.

Refine strokes to increase ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness. Learn the principles of fitness swimming such as drills, interval training, flip turns, and basic lifeguard rescue techniques. Prerequisites: Able to swim front and back crawl, breaststroke, and has a basic understanding of butterfly.

Can dive from the side of the pool and swim 100 yards.

Flying Fish: Stroke + Skill Proficiency Ratio 1:8

Childcare

Refine and coordinate all the strokes. Learn racing and surface dives, open turns, shallow angle dives, breaststroke, and butterfly. Prerequisites: Can perform front crawl and back crawl, has a basic understanding of breaststroke and dolphin kicking, can perform a standing dive, is comfortable swimming 50 yards. Main Pool

Silver: Monday - Thursday: 4:30 - 5:30 pm Cost: $100. Member Cost: $65 month.

Fitness

Dolphin: Stroke Improvement Ratio 1:5

Price is per person. Private and semi-private lessons may be scheduled in either pool, and are based on swim instructor availability.

Sports

Learn to submerge entire head, float on front and back, glide on front and back, roll over, paddle on front and back, and use combined arm and leg motions. Children will be progressing to independent floating, swimming, and jumping. Prerequisites: Child is comfortable in the water, willingly able to submerge eyes, nose and mouth, can float with assistance, and move independently in shallow water or with floatation. Warm Pool

Semi: 5 x 1/2 hour Cost: $188. Member Cost: $125.

Aquatics

Learn to enter and exit the water, submerge face, exhale underwater, explore floating, and moving with support.

Work on water acclimation and breath control.

Prerequisites: None. Warm Pool

Focus on improving skills and fitness in the water. Private lessons are one-on-one and semi-private lessons are one instructor to two students.

Free Adult Aquatic Exercise Classes We offer a comprehensive aquatics program for our members and guests. We’re especially proud to offer both a 25-yard lap pool and a warm water pool which is an ideal environment for relaxation, recuperation, and recreation.

Both pools offer ADA-compliant accessibility lifts for those who need assistance getting in and out of the water.

Our helpful staff can show you how the lifts operate and can even assist you, if you like.

Masters Swimming

Keep fit and work out with masters swimming. Our masters swim program is led by a long-time member volunteer Ronald Cobb. Main Pool Tuesday and Thursday 6:30 - 7:30 pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday 6:00 - 7:15 am Cost: $15/day. Member Cost: free.

Personal Training Aquatic Therapy

Private aquatic therapy offered by Doug Kinnaird (LMT#2958) is perfect for anyone with injuries, chronic pain, limited mobility, or other conditions. Call to schedule a private session and find out for yourself the healing powers of the water. Doug Kinnaird: 503.646.9754 1/2 hr.: Cost: $50. Member Cost: $35.

In Association with the Arthritis Foundation

This meditative class combines deep breathing with progressive movements of the arms, legs, and torso. Based on Tai-Chi, Ai-Chi helps improve balance and range of motion and promotes relaxation and cardiovascular health.

Gym Hockey is played in a gymnasium using plastic sticks, a felt puck, and sneakers. Friendly pick-up games are offered twice a week and open to adults of all ages. Gym hockey has all the passing and teamwork of hockey but without the danger. There is no contact (no checking) and the sticks or pucks won’t hurt you. It’s a great workout.

Each year, we have two fundraisers to raise the funds needed to ensure that we can offer a full range of high quality programs to the community. Our Friends of the Center Brunch takes place in February, and brings the community together for a fun, social event featuring an engaging speaker. Our annual campaign runs throughout the fiscal year, ending on June 30. We urge all MJCC members to make a gift to the annual campaign, in any amount. All gifts, of any size, matter greatly, not only because every dollar counts but also because our ability to secure grants depends, in part, on the community’s level of participation in our annual campaign.

JCCA Membership Perk

Since joining the JCCA, the Mittleman Jewish Community Center enjoys many perks. One perk is mutual reciprocation with membership at other JCCA member facilities. The MJCC welcomes all out-of-town JCC members for a maximum of 14 non-consecutive days per calendar year. After 14 days we have a special offer of $3 per day per person. Members of the MJCC will enjoy reciprocal membership at other JCCA facilities according to that location’s specific policy. Make sure to bring your member ID card!
