General Information

Our Program

• Program Hours: 9:15 am - 1:15 pm

• All children must be the designated age for the program and potty trained by the start of class.

• PJA does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national and ethnic origin.

Registration

Registration opens February 12 at 12:00 pm at pjaproud.org/summer.

PJA families receive priority registration.

Lunch and Snack

Bring a vegetarian snack and lunch (no meat or shellfish) and a water bottle.

Payment/Refund Policy

In the event of a class cancellation, PJA will make every effort to direct your child to another program or issue a full refund. There are no refunds after June 1 except in the case of a class cancellation. Refunds incur a $30 processing fee.

Summer Discovery Pre-Care

Pre-Care: 7:30 - 9:15 am | Ages 4 and up

Cost: $45 per week (pre-registration required).

Extended-Day

PJA Extended-Day (for age 4 only): 1:15 - 5:30 pm

Cost: $285 per week (pre-registration required).

MJCC Extended-Day (for ages 5-12) is available through MJCC Summer Day Camp. Visit oregonjcc.org/summerdiscovery for all the details. Summer Discovery staff will escort students to the MJCC at 1:15 pm.

Stepping Stone

Stepping Stone inspires children to explore new and exciting topics that incorporate inquiry-based activities, global themes and project-based work. Students will form friendships with other learners who share their passion for the same topic.

Mosaic

Entering Grades 2 - 6

Mosaic brings together a broader range of students in an effort to foster and encourage a patchwork of new ideas and lines of inquiry. With mixed-age groups, students learn from their instructor and from one another.

Soaring

Entering Grades 3 - 6

Soaring challenges learners to broaden their thinking through in-depth study of topics offered by our talented instructors. Classes will be taught with inquiry in mind, allowing students to express themselves creatively.

Get messy and experiment with paint to see what happens when different colors collide! Mix, paint, and smear! Wear clothes that can get dirty, as this is the final product may turn out wild, but each will have an exciting story about how it came to be, and the things they learned about how colors combine.

Ms. Frizzle and her young scientists will journey into our bodies. We will make blood, create working lungs, learn about fire safety, and much more!

Mixing Nature and ARt

Learn about nature by making art with it! Gather materials responsibly and give respect to our planet for providing them. The class will work cooperatively to create a paper flower mural that will be on display at the end of the week. come make clay leaves, stamp nature art, and more!

PJA Test Kitchen: Eat the Rainbow

In this delightful culinary adventure, kids will master basic cooking skills, embark on a journey to taste the rainbow of flavors, and whip up scrumptious snacks. Join us for a hands-on experience that not only nourishes young minds but also encourages a lifelong love for wholesome and delicious food!

Sunshine creations

Kids will embark on a crafty, culinary adventure, creating ocean inspired treats and creating "sea-sational" works of art. From decorating beach themed cookies to making seashell crafts, friends will find this to be a summer to remember!

Animal Upcycle

Equine, canine, feline, rodent, fish. Learn about a different animal every day and use recycled materials to create 3D versions of them to keep. Read stories and create your own. Learn to draw them, too! Small animals will visit the class so prepare for super cuteness!

Chess: Make Your Move

Come learn how to play the world’s greatest board game! Chess is thousands of years old and still one of the most popular games around. All levels welcome, we will learn the basics from pieces to positions and a little bit about the history of the game. Students will go home with a chess board of their own.

Clay Creations

Explore the word of sculpting using a variety of home friendly clays. From salt dough to oven hardening clay to edible creations, we will delve into a different sculpting medium every day and learn the best techniques for each. We will also see how clay is used to illustrate books and create movies.

Horses, Ponies and Unicorns

Learn amazing facts about horses, real and imaginary, through stories, activities, non-fiction and crafts. Each day of our class will focus on a different aspect of horse life and care. The class will enjoy a visit with a "real" unicorn. Let your imagination fly!!

I Need SPACE!

Planets, stars, solar systems, galaxies, the whole universe! Come explore the (literally) never-ending expanse of space. From our local star, the Sun, to galaxies far, far away, we will learn about all things space. Grab your spacesuit because NASA has the shuttle ready for launch!

Little coders

Explore computational thinking and coding in a fun environment. Our curriculum, designed for early readers, uses age-appropriate online tools like Lightbot, Kodable, and Scratch. Learn coding basics, including Loops and Conditions, and apply them to create simple projects like games, stories, and animated characters. By the end of the week, you will confidently build your own Scratch projects.

Travel Across the Universe of your imagination with the Beatles. Visit an Octopus's Garden in a Yellow Submarine and learn why All You Need is Love. We will watch parts of the 1968 cartoon, draw characters and create 3D projects based on the film and songs. Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da!!!

Embark on a prehistoric adventure and unleash your inner paleontologist! Explore the fascinating realm of dinosaurs while creating dinosaurthemed art projects, conducting science experiments, and playing dinosaur games!

Come explore the many different types of crafts and activities that can be done with beads! Jewelry, decorations, keychains, art, and more! We will spend the week using different types and sizes of beads and creating lots of fun projects to keep, gift, or share! Beading is a great way to unleash our creativity, practice our fine motor skills, hone our ability to stay organized, and practice planning ahead by creating patterns. All skill levels are welcome!

Welcome to the Doodle Club! Practice your sketching skills and learn to draw original/existing characters, pictures, and more! Go home with a sketchbook and artist’s pencils and more confidence in your doodle abilities.

Spend the week perfecting friendship bracelets, making cool lanyards, building bead animals, weaving on a loom, sewing, and more! Weaving and string arts help with planning, organization, fine motor skills, and creativity! All skill levels are welcome!

We'll slide into the week and indulge ourselves in the world of sports. Focusing on a new sport each day of the week, with one day devoted just to "untraditional sports" not commonly played or seen on TV. We might even make ESPN's Top 10 List!

Warm up your vocal cords and tighten your dancing shoes. We will make costumes, sets, and props in this class! Learn about developing a character and putting on a show! No experience is necessary; just come and have good fun!

Oregon is a geological wonderland! Let’s explore natural wonders. Gold, sunstone, agates, fossils, petrified wood, and more-Oh my! Learn how to identify local rocks and minerals, and where to find them. Rock collections are encouraged and admired.

Greetings, adventurer! During the week, students will learn to create characters, tell stories, cast spells, work as a team, and maybe even meet a dragon! Let’s roll for initiative!

Explore game development with Scratch! This class teaches coding through a fun, drag-and-drop tool, allowing you to create games, animations, and interactive stories. Build projects like platformer games, maze navigation stories, and even multiplayer games for endless creative fun!

All classes are Dragon Team opportunities! We hope you join our team! Do you see a class that interests you? Just pick your topic, pay, and register! Learn leadership skills by aiding the instructor, participating in class activities, and contributing your knowledge to young children. Each team member will receive a t-shirt and certificate of participation.

Calling all Pokémon trainers!

Learn to build your favorite Pokémon, rescue Pikachu from Team Rocket, take a ride on S.S. Anne to uncover rare and mystic Pokémon, and battle to see who will hold the title of Pokémon Master!

Bash ‘Em Bots lego® Ages 7-12

Mix and match chassis designs using wheels, treads, or walking legs. Combine these with tools like drills, hammers, and battery rams as you refine your masterpiece by sparring with friends and overcoming obstacles. Apply real-world engineering and physics and bash your way to victory.

Meet the summer discovery instructors!

ADRIANNE SHARROCK

Adrianne has taught Pre-K at PJA for almost two decades! Chances are, she has read “Frog and Toad” to one or more of your children! Adrianne loves to tell stories, build and paint miniatures and models, play with her dog Ico, and of course play Dungeons and Dragons. Her first DnD character was a wood elf ranger with a badger named William as a pet. She can’t wait for this summer’s adventures!

BESS NATION

Bess teaches and fosters a love of reading, exploration, and curiosity in her students. She earned her graduate degree in education from PSU in 2014 and has been with PJA for six years. She loves being outdoors, exploring new art forms, and being a mom.

CELINDA LLANEZ

Celinda has been the PJA Summer Discovery Program Director for 13 years and enjoys visiting classrooms when they are in session to see all of the fun activities and cool projects. As a Kindergarten teacher for 29 years, 19 of those at PJA, she loves PJA and its welcoming community.

CODY HALL

Cody is an instructional assistant for 1st Grade at PJA. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Theater Arts and is pursuing her Master's degree in Social Work. She loves all things Disney and Marvel. She can’t wait to learn and explore with the kiddos this summer!

ELLEN KIPNIS

Ellen has taught for over 30 years, 18 of those at PJA. She believes in learning through hands-on activities and curiosity as a guide to gaining new knowledge. She loves children and her goal is to make a positive difference in all children’s lives.

ELLIOTT SAUNDERS

Elliott is coming back to Summer Discovery for his second year. He has dedicated the past two years to serving as the PJA K-8 PE Teacher. Before that, he oversaw the Sports and Recreation department at the MJCC. Bringing his passion for an active lifestyle and sports, he looks forward to another year of integrating his personal interests with the Summer Discovery experience!

LUCY SCHWIMMER

Lucy Schwimmer has been teaching 2nd grade at PJA since 2018. She loves to read, crochet, and spend time with her dog Fozzie. She looks forward to another year of exploring, learning, and crafting with you at Summer Discovery!

PLAY-WELL TEKNOLOGIES

Play-well provides project-based programs for children ages 4-15 using LEGO©. Kids enjoy exploring fundamental engineering and physics principles as they build elaborate objects, structures, and vehicles.

REMY STECKEL

Remy will be working as the assistant to the Director, Celinda. They have been teaching at PJA for the past five years. They loved working with all students this year as the library aide and subbing in every class. They enjoy making art, singing loudly in the car, and snuggling with their cats, Ramona and Beezus.

SHAWNA SHADDEN

Shawna is an instructional assistant at PJA. She loves helping students develop curiosity and a love for learning. When not teaching, she enjoys writing, playing music, and hanging out with her two silly cats, Nan and Liam.

SUSANNA PERRIN

Susanna Perrin has been teaching at PJA for 22 years. She loves the integration of stories and art with learning. She enjoys reading, creating her art and stories, and spending time with her family and pets.

BEN STOLBERG

Ben worked for Jewish youth organizations since graduating from the University of Oregon in 2016. He is passionate about being a lifelong learner and teacher, and has spent the last year as the Instructional Assistant at PJA in the Kindergarten class. Ben is excited to share his passion for learning with the kids this summer.
