At the heart of PJA Summer Discovery are experienced teachers and staff creating their classes based on topics they are passionate about. Summer Discovery instructors strive to provide quality enrichment programming that is fun and challenging, with the goal to provide “new learning� for students.

Come learn about our PJA Summer Discovery classes, register, and meet the director, Celinda! Classes are first come, first served.

Our Program • Program Hours: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM • All students must be the designated age for the course and potty trained by start of class. • PJA does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, or national origin in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, or any programs.

Payment/Refund Policy Every effort will be made to offer listed courses and instructors. If a course must be canceled, PJA will make every effort to direct your child to another class or offer a full refund. There are no refunds after May 1 except for course cancellation. Stepping Stone inspires kids to explore new and exciting 2 topics that incorporate inquiry-based activities, global themes and project-based work. Students will form friendships with other learners that share their passion for the same topic.

Soaring Grades 3-6 Soaring challenges learners to broaden their thinking through in depth study of exciting topics offered by our talented instructors. Classes will be taught with inquiry in mind, allowing students to express themselves creatively.

Register at: www.pjaproud.org A PLACE A DAY THROUGH JEWELRY Make necklaces, bracelets, amulets, rings, and earrings! Explore Hawaii, Israel, Middle East, Africa, and more through jewelry making. Design a jewelry box, make clay beads, string animal teeth and claws, explore wire art, bead with shells, seeds, and more! Learn to size, string, tie, and crimp your own jewelry! Instructor: Jamie Alvarez • Cost: $200 COOKING AROUND THE WORLD Travel around the world with me cooking. Each day we will visit a new country and cuisine. Make delicious meals and snacks from Mexico, Italy, Greece and Israel. Create recipe holders to bring home with the week’s recipes. All food Kosher and vegetarian. Instructor: Christiane Blakemore • Cost: $200 COOKING THROUGH HEBREW SONG Come cook and sing in Hebrew, as we learn about Israeli culture and Hebrew vocabulary. Sing about tapuach hazahav (the golden apple) and ani ohev shokolad (I love chocolate) and much more! Cook yummy treats and create a cookbook to take home to share with your family and friends! Instructor: Amalia Blumberg • Cost: $200 EARTHQUAKES AND VOLCANOES Learn all about how earthquakes and volcanoes shape the Earth through hands-on science experiments! Work together to create earthquake and volcano models; even hike to a picnic lunch on a real volcano in Portland! Instructor: Jessica Duggan • Cost: $200

FRESH AND SEASONAL COOKING! Come to cooking classes and learn how to make seasonal treats the family can enjoy. Visit a local farmer’s market and create a vegetable and herb garden. Bring home a recipe holder featuring the recipes learned. All food Kosher and vegetarian. Instructor: Chris Blakemore • Cost: $200 IMAGINATION STATION Imagine you are a bird! How does the world look to you? If you were a farmer, would you grow berries or mac and cheese? Explore nature through observation, drawing, and imagining. Discover natural areas around our campus with art materials in hand. A trip to Gabriel Park will add to our nature exploration along with a personal book reflecting your experiences you can take home! Instructor: Leslie Berman • Cost: $190 INTRODUCING… SIMPLE MACHINES! Discover how to move objects, perform experiments, and exercise your brain all while using simple machines! Catapults, pulleys, and wheels will abound in this class as we create make-and-take projects that will have you saying: I LOVE Simple Machines!! Instructor: Joan Saurini • Cost: $195 JUNIOR ENGINEERS Calling all girl and boy engineers! Explore different types of building. Make structures and more. We will tour a construction site, take a field trip to SCRAP and tour entire PJA and MJCC facilities to see the inner workings of our buildings. LEGO ENGINEERING CLASSES See all descriptions on page 10. MATHMAGIC Grab your hat and wand and come Explore the magic of numbers. You will play games, create art, sing songs, solve puzzles, and test your cooking skills all while learning math. Come solve problems with me; we are sure to have a magical time with math! Instructor: Jobee McCann • Cost: $185 THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS Join Ms. Fizzle and her class on some wild adventures in the Magic School Bus! Every day will be a new book and a new adventure that will lead us through amazing science exploration! Instructor: Ellen Kipnis • Cost: $195 WHAT SHALL I GROW? Would you like to grow a tiny garden filled with green animals? A water garden in a terrarium or a miniature moss garden filled with magical creatures? Bring your imaginations to create small worlds using natural materials. Take a field trip & workshop at Artemisia. Bring home all of your gardens to tend them at home. Instructor: Leslie Berman • Cost: $200 WORLD ART Calling all ARTISTS! If you like to draw, paint, design, sculpt, bead, and sew then come and learn about art and cultures from Australia, Egypt, Japan, Africa, and Peru. Create Adinkra paintings, Kente cloths, and design an Egyptian cartouche. Do AboriginalDot Art, Woodblock Printing, Sumi-e painting, sew a Peruvian felted pouch, and design a giant class mural! A MAGIC SCHOOL BUS ADVENTURE

Join Ms. Frizzle and her class on wild adventures! Take a trip aboard the Magic School Bus to the Portland Aquarium. Every day will be a new wacky book adventure leading us through scientific exploration!! Instructor: Ellen Kipnis • Cost: $190

ANIMAL ANTICS

Dogs have been known to adopt kittens, and armadillo can walk underwater! Learn amazing animal facts though stories, art, film, and non-fiction. Take a trip to the zoo to see incredible animal behaviors in person. Instructor: Jobee McCann • Cost $195

COMIC BOOK CREATIONS

Turn on your imaginations and explore the world of comics. Learn the types of comics, vocabulary, and how to convey a story through sequential images. Create characters and bring them to life. COOKING AROUND THE WORLD

COOKING AROUND THE WORLD

Whether you are a beginner or an old pro, you will love learning how to make flavorful international favorites. Learn how Greek, French, Italian and Asian foods are masterfully created. Acquire basic knife skills, how to read a recipe, and kitchen safety. Best of all, have a blast creating savory and sweet comfort food favorites. All foods are Kosher and vegetarian. COMIC BOOK CREATIONS

Apply real-world concepts in, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as bridges, motorized cars, and more! Build engineer designed projects such as bridges, and motorized cars! Explore the endless possibilities of the LEGO® building system with the guidance of an experienced instructor. Meet the Summer Discovery Instructors!


“ LESLIE BERMAN

has been teaching in the PJA preschool for 2 years. She earned her Master in Arts of Teaching in early childhood and elementary education in 2005. Leslie spent 4 summers teaching writing and drawing in nature on an organic farm in Portland. This summer she will bring her love of art, gardening, and nature.

CHRIS BLAKEMORE

has worked for Kidscorner for the past six years, as well as facilitated cooking camps for over three. She is thrilled to be able to combine her passion for cooking with her passion for teaching.

AMALIA BLUMBERG

teaches Hebrew in the kindergarten at PJA. Along with her passion for teaching Hebrew, she loves music, cooking and baking delicious foods! She is so excited to do all three of these in her class this summer!

SAM BLUMBERG

teaches Jewish Studies in the middle school at PJA. He has a passion for Jewish learning, as well as technology! Sam is excited to explore the world of Minecraft this summer.

MARCIE BREWER

is a reader, writer, director, and educator. She has taught middle school Humanities at PJA for 10 years, and directed more than a 25 plays. She learned to sew at her grandmother’s knee and her first sewing project won a ribbon in 4-H. Many Halloween costumes and school productions later, she’s excited to embark on challenges with PJA Junior Runway!

TARA COZAD

has been teaching Kindergarten at PJA and the MJCC for 10 years. She is excited to be combining her two passions this summer: teaching children and her love of dogs.

JESSICA DUGGAN

graduated with a BA in Environmental Studies from the U of O and with an MA in Teaching from Pacific University. She loves teaching preschool at PJA and exploring the outdoors in the Pacific Northwest. She’s excited to teach a class that incorporates both those things!

ELLEN KIPNIS

has taught for 21 years, 9 of those at PJA. She believes in learning through hands-on activities and curiosity as a guide to gaining new knowledge. She loves children and her goal is to make a positive difference in all children’s lives.

is a PJA Kindergarten teacher and the director of PJA’s Summer Discovery. An educator for 17 years, Celinda strives to provide children with memorable, meaningful experiences. As the director for 6 years, her goal is to provide programming in which students learn through play, inquiry and of course discovery!

JOBEE MCCANN

has been working at PJA for 4 years with 4-6 year olds. She is passionate about children and learning. Her favorite subject is Math and loves solving problems of all kinds.

SANDY NEMER

M.Ed, is a part time teacher at PJA and student at Dyslexia Training Institute in San Diego, CA. She enjoys making teaching a meaningful and fun experience for all. She grew up in Europe and was a teacher in Japan and has a love for different types of cuisines and cultures.

MICHAEL PATTERSON

discovered a passion for illustration at an early age. Later in life, he discovered another passion - working with children. Michael is thrilled to be bridging these two passions in his comic book workshop.

SUSANNA PERRIN

has been teaching at PJA for 12 years. She loves the integration of stories and art with learning. She has 3 children, a dog, and a horse. She enjoys the great outdoors, reading, creating her own art and stories and spending time with her family and pets.

SAM (SAMANTHA) SALENGER

graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from Scripps College in Claremont, Ca. in 1992 and earned her teaching credential from Dominican University in 1995. After her kids attended PJA preschool, Sam was hired on to teach elementary art at PJA in 2011. She is excited to share her passion for art and teaching this summer!

has been teaching at PJA for 23 years. Her favorite thing about teaching is watching children become excited about learning, and growing into independent learners. In her spare time, she loves to travel and spend time with family.

JAMIE TRACY

graduated from Humboldt State and has been teaching preschool for eight years. She loves photography, scrapbooking, movies, hiking and getting crafty in her spare time.
