Summer is here, and we’re excited to spend it with you! We’ve got a lot planned, and this guide is chock full of information about summer programs. One change that we hope that you’ll appreciate is that we’ve combined the former Arts + Culture Guide and Program Guide into this single guide that lists all of our cultural arts, social, educational, fitness, aquatics, and sports and recreation offerings in one place! For many families, summer means “camp,” and there is still time to register for MJCC Day Camp! Our program runs from 7:30 am - 6:00 pm from June 25 - August 24 and serves kids from ages 3 - 15. Whether you choose Classic Camp, Specialty Camp, Camp Kef, or our CIT program, you are guaranteed a fun-filled experience featuring a wide range of activities that extend to every corner of our campus – from the outdoor playground on the green, to the swimming pools, to the ga-ga pit, to the gym, to the Sportsplex, and beyond! Other summer opportunities for kids include childcare and Club J, both of which have extended summer hours; morning Club J sessions are offered every Monday through Thursday, and drop-in childcare is available later into the evening. Teens can participate in open play basketball in the gym, Sundays from 2:00 - 4:00 pm, from June 17 - August 26. In August, we’ll bring our teen delegation to Orange County and Long Beach, CA, to participate in the JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest®! There are also lots of events for adults and families to enjoy this summer, both on and off-campus. Our Outdoor Summer Concert series on the green returns with three fabulous concerts, including Moshav, appearing on July 26. Once again, we’ll be hosting Jewish Heritage Nights with the Portland Thorns on June 27, as well as with the Hillsboro Hops on August 21. Our summer exhibition in the gallery opens on July 5, featuring work by Boris Uan-zo-li. Finally, our soccer leagues continue through the summer and provide a fabulous opportunity to have fun and stay fit. As always, we’ll be undertaking campus improvements throughout the summer. Our biggest project is the replacement of the Sportsplex “bubble.” This will take place at the end of June and beginning of July, and will ensure the integrity of the Sportsplex for years to come. Enjoy the summer! I look forward to seeing you whenever you “Find Yourself at the J!” Warm regards,
Steve Albert Executive Director

Boris Uan-Zo-li’s artwork reflects his fascinating life, big, bold, varied and colorful. His work is abstract, but his figures are identifiable like the portraits of Woody Allen and personal hero Bob Dylan. Boris was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1938. During the Soviet times, Boris participated in four exhibitions and at one of the exhibitions in the USSR his paintings were withdrawn from the gallery by the Soviet bureaucrat because they did not fit the communist vision. After the fall of communism, Boris’s paintings were exhibited in a number of places, including the Central House of the Artists, one of the most prestigious Russian exhibitions. Exhibit on display July 5 - September 7

Aquatics Program
We offer a comprehensive aquatics program. We have a 25-yard lap pool and a Warm Water Pool which is ideal for relaxation, recuperation, and recreation. Both pools offer ADA-compliant accessibility lifts for those who need assistance getting in and out of the water. Our staff can show you how the lifts operate and can even assist you.
Develop proper technique and learn the basics of competitive swimming to participate in USA Swimming meets. Increase swimming endurance while making new friends. Prerequisites: Must be able to swim 100 yards each of freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke. Main Pool For a tryout, contact Head Coach Jennie Condon at jcondon@oregonjcc.org.

Aqua Strength
Low Impact Cardio If exercises like jumping jacks or jogging are too hard for your joints on land, the pool is a great place to get that exercise with virtually no impact. Put on one of our adjustable Aqua Jogger belts for extra support and flotation, then start your routine. Remember, maintaining form and posture is still important for healthy and safe exercising in the water. Try Gentle Exercise in the Warm Pool Any of the exercises above can be performed in our Warm Pool, but should be done at a lower intensity, so as not to overheat yourself.
Don’t forget about the free classes in the main and warm pools. See page 16.

Saturdays, June 30 - August 25 11:30 am - 12:30 pm, FIT402 Cost: $131. Member Cost: $96. No class July 28
Weight Training in the Water Our hand buoys can be used just like weights in the fitness center. They provide resistance and can be used to do curls, chest presses, triceps pushdowns, and more. These same exercises can be done using your hands: fingers together for less resistance, fingers spread apart for more resistance.
Adult Aquatic Exercise Classes
Sports
Challenge yourself with the Glide Fit. Think of doing a Body Shop workout class on an uneven surface! Planks, lunges, working with elastic bands, and more while floating on top of the water. An incredible workout with a splash of fun! Instructor: Alex. Main Pool
Unique Ways to Use a Kickboard Kickboards can be used for more than just doing laps. Holding the board horizontally, press the board up and down in the water. The resistance makes for a great workout. Alternately, holding the board vertically underwater allows you to push and pull the board through the water for more resistance training.
Aquatics
Glide Fit is the perfect solution to shake up your Yoga workout! This unique floating fitness mat enables all participants to experience the benefits of core stabilization with the challenge of an uneven surface. An incredible workout with a splash of fun! Instructor: Amy. Main Pool

During the past two summers, the MJCC has brought nearly 40 teens to experience JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest®. It has been truly inspiring to see teens from Oregon represent our state on an international level. It was evident that the Games and ArtsFest had a long-lasting impact on each of them. Basketball Gold Medalist and Portland area teen Sam Blauer commented, “Participating in the JCC Maccabi Games® helped complete my summer as a whole and I am grateful to have been a part of the delegation.”

Ensure the future of the MJCC by giving a Legacy gift.
SUPPORT Support the MJCC! Twelve thousand people come through the doors of the MJCC on a yearly basis, and nearly 4,000 individuals utilize our facilities as members. Membership, program fees and rentals account for approximately 86% of our annual revenue, and we are dependent upon donations and grants to make up the difference. MJCC is a nonprofit organization that exists and thrives due to the generous support of the community. Contributions support additional programming in all areas: fitness; aquatics; sports and recreation; cultural arts; educational offerings; and family, teen, and young adult programs – as well as scholarships for memberships and day camp. We are committed to ensuring that no one is ever turned away due to an inability to pay. For over 100 years, the Mittleman Jewish Community Center has been the “living room” of Portland’s Jewish Community. Originally located in the heart of Old South Portland, the MJCC moved to its current campus in 1971. Over the years, our programs and services have evolved and expanded, but our mission remains unchanged—to enrich Jewish life in our community by providing for the social, cultural, educational, and recreational needs of the Jewish community, and serving as the common meeting place for the entire Jewish community. Please consider a Sustaining Membership, or a monthly donation to support scholarships, or cultural programming at the MJCC. For more information about supporting the Mittleman Jewish Community Center, contact Saul Korin at 503.452.3427 or skorin@oregonjcc.org. Thank you for your support of the Mittleman Jewish Community Center.
