SUMMER DISCOVERY Welcome to Portland Jewish Academy! Thanks for sharing your summer with us! Leapfrog (4+5 yrs. old by JuLY 9) Leapfrog engages young learners in an exploration of math, science and literacy activities that are hands-on and inquirybased. These classes will nurture your child’s curiosity, allow their imaginations to flourish and foster a love for learning. Age Group

Soaring
(grades 4-6)
Stepping Stone (entering grades 1-3) Stepping Stone inspires kids to explore new and exciting topics that incorporate inquiry-based activities, global themes and project-based work. Students will form friendships with other learners that share their passion for the same topic.
Soaring (entering grades 4-6) Soaring challenges learners to broaden their thinking through in-depth study of exciting topics offered by our talented instructors. Classes will be taught with inquiry in mind, allowing students to express themselves creatively.

General Information
• Program Hours: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM • All students must be the designated age for the course and potty trained by start of class. • PJA does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, or national origin in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, or any other programs.

• Bring a vegetarian snack (meat and shellfish free) and a water bottle. • Students heading to MJCC Day Camp, should bring a dairy or vegetarian lunch.

Payment/Refund Policy
Every effort will be made to offer listed courses and instructors. If a course must be canceled, PJA will make every effort to direct your child to another class or offer a full refund. There are no refunds after May 1 except for course cancellation. In the unusual case where refunds are appropriate PJA will charge a $25 processing fee.

Delve into the questions and conundrums at the core of 5 picture books. Receive a DVD and slideshow of the preparation process. Learn about famous artists and create art pieces of your own inspired by O’Keeffe and her flowers, Chihuly and his glass, Matisse and his scissors and Kadinsky and his colors. Instructor: Ashlea Barde Cost: $195 Artsy Illustrators Make beautiful collages like Eric Carle. Draw like Ed Emberley and create dot pictures like Peter H. Reynolds. Explore the world of book illustrators through various media such as printing and painting. Discover New Things! PRE-ENGINEERING, ages 4&5 Students will build cities, bridges, and motorized cars/planes and explore the many creative possiblilites of engineering with LEGOS®. With access to over 100,000 pieces, you will be able to build things you only dreamed of with the support of an experienced Play-Well Instructor to guide you. Sea Creatures: Real and Imaginary See real sea creatures at the zoo. Identify them, learn what they eat and where and how they live. Then, create imaginary sea creature adventures through art and drama. Make them into puppets and tell your story. Use your photos, collect pictures from magazines and other sources to illustrate and create stories and poems. Cooking Around the World In this class, budding chefs will learn how to prepare tasty, nutritious food from around the world. Acquire basic cooking skills while learning about a variety of food and cultures. Come join us as we cook and eat our way around the world. Instructor: Ellen Kipnis Cost: $200
Creative Creatures Creature Creation & Investigation Explore animals real and imagined. Read fiction and non-fiction, learn tricks for drawing, creating sculptures and take nature walks. Every day will focus on a different animal. Get ready to take home amazing animal projects. Reptiles will visit the classroom! Instructor: Susanna Perrin Cost: $200 Dog Sports How many frisbees can a dog catch in 1 minute? Would a dog be a good dance partner? Find out what kinds of activities there are for you and your canine. Learn about flyball, dog dancing, disc dogs, treiball and agility to name a few. Dogs with Jobs Discover what kinds of jobs dogs can have and why they are so good at what they do. Everyday a working dog will visit the class or we will have a field trip to watch dogs in action!
