Welcome Dear Friends, This winter promises to be an exciting one! We have recently completed a number of significant upgrades to our facility: a brand-new floor and fresh paint in our Fitness Center, new carpet in the lobby, new paint and banners in our gymnasium, a rougher pool deck to enhance safety, new upholstery on many of our ballroom chairs, the re-design of our Pilates Studio into a Wellness Consultation space, and a new projector in our ballroom. These improvements, and others, allow us to better serve our members and support the new programs and services that are described in this program guide. Two of our biggest events of the winter are our 6th annual Fitness Palooza and our 3rd annual Friends of the Center Brunch.

These exciting annual programs bring together our community for socializing, education and fun, and we hope you’ll make it a priority to join us!

Learn about our broad range of fitness programs and try out something new! This year’s program is better than ever and will highlight most of our group exercise classes, including our most popular - yoga. Hilary will give a free talk on nutrition, and Eve will showcase our newest offering, “Alexander Technique!” Our personal training staff will be on-hand to answer questions and to offer free IGNITE sessions. Also, take advantage of a free chair massage!

Sunday, March 5, 10:00 am oregonjcc.org/brunch The Friends of the Center Brunch is a fabulous community event that also serves as our most important fundraiser of the year. None of the wonderful upgrades to our facility would have been possible without generous donations from MJCC members.

Because membership fees do not cover our operational expenses, our ability to enhance our facility, beyond basic maintenance, is completely dependent upon philanthropic contributions.

This year, we’ll feature Yosef Abramowitz, an AmericanIsraeli human rights activist, educator, and entrepreneur.

Abramowitz was named by CNN as one of the six top global “Green Pioneers;” PV Tech calls him “one of the most inspiring solar CEOs” in the world; and he was named Person of the Year by the Israel National Business and Energy Conference. This is a program you won’t want to miss!

Pool Accessibility Lift

The MJCC Aquatic Center has two accessibility lifts for those patrons who need assistance getting into and out of the pools. Our main pool lift is self-operated and has a weight capacity of 300 pounds. Our warm water pool lift is operated by our staff and has a weight limit of 250 pounds.

Swim Lessons Swim Lesson Assessment

We are pleased to offer free swim lesson assessments to participants who are new to our program. During the assessment, one of our instructors will lead your child through a series of skills to determine their appropriate level. Please call ahead to schedule your assessment.

Itty Bitty Pool Party

Join us in the warm water pool with pool toys, music, and good times! *Parents must accompany children in the water.

Ages: 6 yrs + under Sunday, Feb. 26 3:00 - 5:30 pm Cost: $15 per family.

Member Cost: free.

• Payment must be provided at time of registration to guarantee a spot.

• Enrollment is accepted up until the half-way point of the session.

• Class fees may be prorated after the third class.

• Swim lesson registration fee does not include open swim before/after class. As always, all persons participating in open swim must pay the daily admission fee or use their membership card before entering the pools. Supervision policy applies.

Accommodating Waitlists

All programs operate with minimum enrollment requirements and maximum enrollment capacities. We reserve the right to cancel, change, or combine programs when minimum program enrollments have not been met.

Once a program is filled, a waitlist will be created. You will be called if an opening becomes available or if additional classes are created. Note: If additional classes are created, they may not be at the same time or day as the original program.

Note: swim diapers with tight fitting waist and legs required for children not yet potty trained.

Swim Lesson Levels Private + Semi-Private Lessons

Angelfish: Intro to Water Ratio 1:5

Private: 5 x 1/2 hour Cost: $255. Member Cost: $180.

Learn water entry, bubble blowing, kicking, floating, and underwater exploration. Warm Pool

Blowfish: Fundamental Water Skills Ratio 1:5

Crocodile: Stroke Development Ratio 1:5

Learn front and back crawl and elementary backstroke.

Work on endurance and treading water. Practice swimming 25 yards. Prerequisites: Child can float on front and back and swim 15 feet independently without floatation. Child is comfortable going under water and entering the deep end of the pool. Warm Pool and Main Pool

Improve front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, and treading water. Learn the basics of breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, and standing dives.

Prerequisites: Understands the basic concepts of front crawl and back crawl, is comfortable swimming 25 yards and comfortable in deep water and, is able to perform a sitting and kneeling dive. Main Pool

Develop proper technique and learn the basics of competitive swimming to participate in USA Swimming meets. Increase swimming endurance while making new friends. Prerequisites: Must be able to swim 100 yards each of freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke.

Flying Fish: Stroke + Skill Proficiency Ratio 1:8 Refine strokes to increase ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness. Learn the principles of fitness swimming such as drills, interval training, flip turns, and basic lifeguard rescue techniques. Prerequisites: Able to swim front and back crawl, breaststroke, and has a basic understanding of butterfly.

Can dive from the side of the pool and swim 100 yards.

Main Pool

Stingrays Swim Team (Ages 7 + Older)

Childcare

Eel: Stroke Refinement Ratio 1:6 Refine and coordinate all the strokes. Learn racing and surface dives, open turns, shallow angle dives, breaststroke, and butterfly. Prerequisites: Can perform front crawl and back crawl, has a basic understanding of breaststroke and dolphin kicking, can perform a standing dive, and is comfortable swimming 50 yards. Main Pool

Contact our Guest Services Desk to fill out a private swim lesson request form. Please allow five to seven business days for our private lesson coordinator to contact you.

Fitness

Dolphin: Stroke Improvement Ratio 1:5

Price is per person. Private and semi-private lessons may be scheduled in either pool, and are based on swim instructor availability.

Sports

Learn to submerge entire head, float on front and back, glide on front and back, roll over, paddle on front and back, and use combined arm and leg motions. Children will be progressing to independent floating, swimming, and jumping. Prerequisites: Child is comfortable in the water, willingly able to submerge eyes, nose and mouth, can float with assistance, and move independently in shallow water or with floatation. Warm Pool

Semi: 5 x 1/2 hour Cost: $188. Member Cost: $125.

Aquatics

Learn to enter and exit the water, submerge face, exhale underwater, explore floating, and moving with support.

Work on water acclimation and breath control.

Prerequisites: None. Warm Pool

Focus on improving skills and fitness in the water. Private lessons are one-on-one and semi-private lessons are one instructor to two students.

Free Adult Aquatic Exercise Classes We offer a comprehensive aquatics program for our members and guests. We’re especially proud to offer both a 25-yard lap pool and a warm water pool which is an ideal environment for relaxation, recuperation, and recreation.

Both pools offer ADA-compliant accessibility lifts for those who need assistance getting in and out of the water.

The 2016 JCC Maccabi Games has come and gone. Our 20 athletes traveled to St. Louis, MO this past August. We participated in basketball, soccer, and track and brought home gold or silver medals in all three sports! Our athletes not only enjoyed their sporting events but also loved meeting new friends, attending evening events, and spending time with their host families.

Gym Hockey is played in a gymnasium using plastic sticks, a felt puck, and sneakers. Friendly pick-up games are offered twice a week and open to adults of all ages. Gym hockey has all the passing and teamwork of hockey but without the danger. There is no contact (no checking) and the sticks or pucks won’t hurt you. It’s a great workout.

Winter session of Youth Indoor Soccer will be starting January 28 and 29 with a full eight-week schedule. Be part of a great atmosphere for children grade one through High School. MJCC is a nonprofit organization that exists and thrives due to the generous support of the community. Twelve thousand people come through our doors on a yearly basis, and over 4,000 individuals utilize our facilities as members. Membership, program fees, and rentals account for approximately 86% of our annual revenue, and we are dependent upon donations and grants to provide the remainder. Contributions support additional programming in all areas: fitness, aquatics, sports and recreation, cultural arts, educational offerings, and family, teen, and young adult programs – as well as scholarships for memberships and day camp. JCCA Membership Perk

As a member of JCCA, the Mittleman Jewish Community Center enjoys many perks. One perk is mutual reciprocation with membership at other JCCA member facilities. The MJCC welcomes all out-of-town JCC members for a maximum of 14 non-consecutive days per calendar year. After 14 days we have a special offer of $3 per day per person. Members of the MJCC will enjoy reciprocal membership at other JCCA facilities according to that location’s specific policy. Make sure to bring your member ID card!
