Dear Friends,
2
I’ve just recently passed my one year mark at the MJCC (my “workaversary,” as one colleague calls it). I enjoy my work tremendously, and I find myself looking back on the past year with a great deal of pride and satisfaction. There is a lot that’s new, including many talented new staff members, new equipment, and new programs. And there’s a lot that hasn’t changed. We’re still “the friendliest gym in town,” we are “open to everyone,” and we make customer service our top priority. These key characteristics reflect our core values. As we move into the winter, you’ll see that our programs also reflect an exciting balance of old and new. Some of these programs are possible because of our new affiliation with the Jewish Community Center Association of North America (JCCA). This includes the JCC Maccabi Games, a tremendously exciting and fun opportunity for athletes between the ages of 13 and 16 to compete with other Jewish teens from around the country. You’ll be hearing and seeing a lot of additional information about the program this winter – as soon as we have more details. We’re also participating in the JCCA’s nationwide “Cycle for Good” program on Sunday, December 13, from 8:00 - 11:00 am. Join us as we have fun, work out, and raise funds to support our campus partner, Portland Jewish Academy.
Our new wellness offerings include, “Whole New Year, Whole New You” for those interested in improving their quality of life through healthy living. We also have new opportunities in the cultural arts. Our author series kicks off with a special presentation by New York Times bestselling-author A.J. Jacobs at our annual Friends of the Center Brunch on February 21. It’s a wonderful social event that provides necessary support to the MJCC. In combination with our Annual Campaign in December, these funds help us to ensure that membership is affordable, financial aid is available, and funds are available to operate facilities such as the warm water pool. Of course, we continue to offer scores of programs and classes that are longstanding and popular. Our aquatic exercise classes, swim lessons, and swim team are central to our offerings. So are the sports classes and leagues that we offer for children, teens, and adults. Personal training and fitness classes round out the programs that have led to our achieving record membership in recent months. We continue to innovate to improve your experience each time you find yourself at the J. Please give us your feedback so that we can serve you better. Warm regards,
Our health and wellness offerings are expanding, as well. Our members know that it’s the quality and consistency of Les MillsTM classes that make them so popular around the nation. We’ll be updating BODYPUMPTM and adding CXWORXTM – which provides a core and abdominal workout – as well as BODYATTACKTM. You can check out these new classes, as well as many of our other fitness class offerings, at our annual Fitness Palooza, on Sunday, January 10.

Swim Lessons Swim Assessment (ages 13 and under)
The MJCC aquatics department is dedicated to teaching children to swim and stay safe in our pools. We have an outstanding aquatic facility that allows kids to enjoy the water safely under the close supervision of certified lifeguards. We require a swim assessment for each child under the age of 13. The swim assessment consists of swimming the length of the pool with arm strokes, climbing out, jumping back in, and swimming backstroke the length of the pool. Please contact our aquatics department for any questions regarding swim assessments. If you are unable to pass the swim assessment, you will be required to wear a life jacket. Although the MJCC offers class levels such as Angelfish and Blowfish together, we teach to each child’s ability. (See page 7 for swim lesson levels.) On occasion, we split or combine the classes based on skill level.
Please refer to pool schedules at oregonjcc.org/pools for weekly lap, open recreational swim, adults-only swim, and program times.
Pool Accessibility Lift
The MJCC Aquatic Center has two accessibility lifts for those patrons who need assistance getting into and out of the pools. Our main pool lift is self-operated and has a weight capacity of 300 pounds. Our warm water pool lift is operated by our staff and has a weight limit of 250 pounds.
Itty Bitty Pool Party
Join us in the warm water pool with pool toys, music, and good times! *Parents must accompany children in the water. Ages 6 yrs + under Sunday, February 21 3:00 - 5:30 pm Cost: $15 per family. Member Cost: free.
Pool Float Days
Come play on the float! Second Sunday of the month 3:00 - 5:00 pm
Note: swim diapers required for children not yet potty trained.
Swim Lessons Auto-Enroll Swim lesson registration is easier and more convenient than ever! Enroll in the program and your child will be automatically enrolled through the spring. There is no auto-enroll in the summer. • Once you register for the first time, you never have to re-register for as long as your child remains enrolled. • Once you enroll and choose a method of payment, fees are automatically charged two weeks prior to the start of a new session.
• As long as a student remains enrolled in a level, they keep their day and lesson time until they move to the next level. • Be sure to check the auto-enroll box on your next activity registration form.

The Maccabi Games consists of five days of sports and recreation activities. The boys and girls sports offered
range from team sports such as basketball, soccer, and baseball/softball to individual sports such as swimming, tennis, and track. Our location for the 2016 Maccabi Games is St. Louis, MO (July 31 - August 5, 2016).
If you would like more information on getting your teen involved in the Maccabi Games, please email MaccabiGames@oregonjcc.org or visit oregonjcc.org/maccabigames.
Childcare
We are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for Jewish athletes, ages 13 - 16. Each athlete must be Jewish and have at least one Jewish parent and must be between the ages of 13 and 16 as of July 31 of the year of the Games for which the athlete is registering. The Mittleman Jewish Community Center (MJCC) recently re-affiliated with the Jewish Community Center Association of North America (JCCA). One significant benefit of membership is the ability for the MJCC to send a group of teen athletes to participate in the JCC Maccabi Games, the world’s largest annual sports competition for Jewish teens!

Annual Fund
MJCC Legacy Society
MJCC is a nonprofit organization that exists and thrives due to the generous support of the community. Membership, program fees and rentals account for approximately 86% of our annual revenue, and we are dependent upon donations to provide the remainder. Contributions fund additional programming in all areas: fitness; aquatics; sports and recreation; cultural arts; educational offerings; and family, teen and young adult programs – as well as scholarships for memberships and day camp. We are committed to ensuring that no one is ever turned away due to an inability to pay.
Mittleman Jewish Community Center created the Friends of the Center Legacy Society last year to recognize those who have taken the extraordinary step to include MJCC in their estate plan. We are extremely grateful to the following individuals who are members of the Friends of the Center Legacy Society:
Each year, we have two fundraisers to raise the funds needed to ensure that we can offer a full range of high quality programs to the community. The first is our annual campaign which will take place during the month of December. We urge you to consider a gift to the MJCC during our annual campaign. All gifts, of any size, matter greatly, and our ability to secure grants depends, in part, on the community’s level of participation in our annual campaign. Think about what the J means to you. We bring the community together and have an impact on people’s lives through a range of programs found nowhere else in Oregon. Please contribute to the MJCC’s annual campaign. Our second fundraiser is the Friends of the Center Brunch. This year, the event will be held on February 21 and will feature best-selling author, journalist and columnist A.J. Jacobs. It is truly not-to-be missed, and we hope you’ll plan to join us! Thank you for supporting the Mittleman Jewish Community Center.
My parents are making sure the MJCC will be here for my children.

SAVE THE DATE
for the Mittleman Jewish Community Center’s
Sunday, February 21, 2016 with Special Guest A.J. Jacobs 10:00 am at MJCC
Also honoring new inductees to the Oregon Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and presenting the Harry Glickman Scholar Athlete Awards.
A.J. Jacobs, best-selling author and “human guinea pig” has outsourced his life to India, read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica, lived modern life as the ultimate biblical subject, and followed every bit of modern medical advice in a quest to become the healthiest man alive. Jacobs chronicles his experiences in his New York Times bestsellersThe Year of Living Biblically and The Know-It-All, and in his latest, Drop Dead Healthy. Now Portland audiences get to hear truly amazing stories from a man who has walked in the shoes of Moses, consumed 33,000 pages of knowledge and followed the caveman diet.
