Congratulations also goes to this year’s Campus King and Queen, Joel Baxter and Pamela Okolo, both of which were extremely honored and surprised to receive this title. Joel commented Unlike Mr. and Mrs. Pioneer, the Campus King and Queen are elected by the student body. This means that there is no other criteria for the King and Queen to meet except being well like among the students. Baxter and Okolo had the same first thought when they received the news of their positions. Their thoughts were put into one simple word “awesome.”

Once upon a time, several months ago... By Hagan McIntosh On Tuesday, January 22, students began their first day of school in the new edition. Batesville recently added new classroom and new science labs to the east wing of BHS. Batesville High also completed the new office and the Commons, which received a face lift that included white walls, new flooring, and updated furniture. The spacious design is a reminder of how our school is growing and prospering. “The new building is nice and very spacious but was confusing at first when trying to find the classrooms,” commented Sophmore Morgan Owens. Students also appreciate the spacious room. "It is a lot easier to pay attention and learn the material being taught when we are not stuffed in the classroom like a can of sardines,” stated BHS student Cody Scrivner. Teachers, too, are enjoying the new learning environment. "Students are responding well. They like the open and do not feel like they are crowded like it was in my old home in room nine," math teacher Mark Sparks stated. A considerable body of research about environmental design shows the positive effect comfort can have on learning, human productivity, and creativity. "The students really like the desks because they are set up in groups,” explained Spanish teacher Danielle Rowell.

Since not everyone learns the same way, these larger rooms allow students who are independent learners to learn from not being so crowded. Technology is another great advantage. Advancements in technolgy seem to occur almost daily and if schools are not accommodating the advancements it creates a disadvantage when trying to enter the workforce. Mr. Sparks likes the the technology and the amounts of space the new building gives students and faculty. The new building is a proud new addition to Batesville High school where students and teachers alike can sit down and enjoy their rooms and keep on learning and be prepared for there future in life.

FFA Plants Their Future

By Kaleb Armstrong FFA stands for Future Farmers of America. The FFA Club at Batesville High School is involved in so many different charities that help out our community “FFA is currently involved in spring CDEs judging competitions such as forestry and land,” stated A.j. Konkler. FFA is only for a select few who are willing to give time and hard work to benefit other people. “We are also about to get a stream team which is where we get together and we go and pick up the litter off of the river banks and we try to help the erosion problems on our natural waterways,” Quoted Konkle. A few of the students in Future Farmers of America include Seth Wilson, A.J. Konkler, Issac Davis, Travis swaim and many more. “We are also growing veggies for our plant sale in a couple months and Mr. Jones has got three head of cattle up at our barn right now and we are getting ready to make them start breeding,” elaborated Konkler. The Future Farmers of America club also helps students improve their character. “FFA has helped me be a better leader and a better teammate,” stated Seth Wilson. Wilson is a very dedicated member of FFA. Wilson participates in all FFA meetings and is currently running for office and wilson also competes in various Career Development Events (CDE’s). “My favorite thing about FFA would have to be the friends you make and thrill of helping people. There’s not really anything I hate about FFA because we are always having a good time being serious about it. At the moment we are building benches and feed troughs to sell to the public. We are also in the process of adding on to our barn. I feel FFA is a good club, not just for country people but for everyone,” explained Wilson. Konkler and Wilson both show great gratitude and appreciation for Batesville High Schools Future Farmers of America club and plan to remain in FFA the rest of their high school years.

Choose Your

Medium

By Hannah Barber Talent begins with a choice. A pencil? A paint brush? A camera? These are all types of mediums. A medium is the type of materials used to create a work of art. Sarah Rudd, a student at BHS, uses different types of mediums for her art work. “I started drawing as soon as I could hold a crayon. I have always loved art and it is my favorite hobby!” exclaimed Rudd. Recently, Rudd won a scholarship competing at a competition called the Thea Foundation’s 2013 Visual Art’s Competition. This competition is based off of a young girl’s journal entries who died in a car accident in 2001. Her name was Thea Kay Leopoulos. This year’s competition theme was called “Soldiers In Uniform,” and Rudd showed what the theme meant to her through her amazing work of art. “When I found out that I had won I was so excited that I took of running into my kitchen and slid across it trying to tell my mother...” said Rudd.

“Photography is a new medium for me, but the people and countryside were so beautiful in Uganda that it was easy to capture images. Most of the images are from villages in Bugembe and Wairiaka, Uganda, and highlight the everyday life in Africa,” stated David Campbell, BHS principal. Page The 6 Spirit of the Pioneer

She came in second place in the competition and her scholarship was a total of $3,500. Rudd has had help in her art work and is working outside her comfort-zone because of it. “I have to thank Mrs. Sturdivant, because she found the competition and pushed me to enter. She has been very helpful in getting outside my comfort-zone and drawing new things,” Rudd told. Art is something that, with time, can become a very successful career. However, to become a professional artist is extremely time consuming and if someone decided to have art as a career, they would have to be fully devoted and willing to work hard. “I want to pursue a career in either graphic design, art education, or maybe animation, but I still love traditional fine art,” commented Rudd. In art, knowing how things work is immensely helpful in drawing those specific subjects or items. For example, in drawing parts of the human body, knowing what functions with each other or where certain veins and arteries lead to really helps in drawing those parts. Taking classes such as Anatomy would be a great way to learn about how they work. “As a way to improve her art, Sarah has chosen to take Anatomy in order to better understand how the human body functions and moves,” explained Samantha Hogan, a teacher at BHS. BHS is proud of the artistic support provided, from the administration to the student-level.

Seniors Shooting 4 Success By Autumn Edwards This year’s senior basketball players Jared May, Dylan Milligan, Jonathan Hendrix, Joe Mourer, Wesley Rudd, and Jacob Hardin have showed a great deal of determination. This has been a learning season for this group of young men, as they have kept their hope alive as they strove for improvement. “My guys have shown a great deal of character this year. With us not having a very good year, they still worked really hard,” stated Coach Fulks. Even in their losses these Pioneers did not give up or wallow in self pity. These boys went back to practice and worked to make themselves better players. According to senior JaredMay, this has been a good year. “It was a great year even though our record didn’t show it.” He also went on to say that the hardest part of their season adapting to a new coach. “The beginning was the hardest because that was when I was just getting used to the style Coach Fulks likes to play. The seniors are a group I’m never going to forget because of the way we made each other have fun.” May had this to say about his coach: “However the team could not have made it so far with our their coach, Coach Fulks. Coach Fulks is a great coach and is going to do great things with our program.”
