who we are.

Berkeley Hall, an independent nursery through eighth grade school, was founded in 1911 by two dedicated educators: Leila and Mabel Cooper. They viewed children as inherently good, intelligent, inquisitive, capable, and uniquely talented individuals. Their educational philosophy and approach was rooted in their study of Christian Science, which recognizes such God-given qualities and potential as being innate within each child. The Cooper sisters’ spiritual view of children fueled their desire to establish a school wherein each student would be embraced by a “no limits, no labels, and lots of love” culture and learning environment. That credo still guides Berkeley Hall today.

REPORT OF GIVING

We are guided by our unwavering commitment to our mission:

To empower children to fulfill their unlimited, God-given potential as fearless scholars and conscientious citizens.

what we do.

We unlock potential. We instill a love of learning. We prepare children to succeed. We inspire children to make a positive, meaningful difference in the world. Berkeley Hall teachers encourage and foster inquisitiveness, self-discovery, and a deep love of learning. Teachers here help students to set high standards and to exceed expectations, while supporting, nurturing, and mentoring them along the way. Our teachers inspire our students to grow, explore, learn, and prepare for rigorous high school and college or university studies, and, most of all, to lead lives of meaning, purpose, and accomplishment. Indeed, Berkeley Hall teachers empower their students to be active, perceptive thinkers whose love of learning and determination to be a positive difference maker in the world will define them for a lifetime. Berkeley Hall teachers are passionate about enabling their students – your children – to experience the joy and satisfaction of fulfilling their full potential. Our core values of respect (for both others and oneself), responsibility, compassion, and honesty were determined by Berkeley Hall students and teachers themselves, and are integrated into our academic, arts, and athletic programs on a daily basis. And our balanced learning environment includes the development of moral, intellectual, social, and artistic sensibilities and athletic capabilities.

ear Parents, Alumni, Friends, and Supporters of Berkeley Hall,

As the oldest co-educational, independent day-school in Los Angeles, Berkeley Hall School has made tremendous strides in its 105-year history. There have been many factors that have contributed to our growth from a small schoolhouse and handful of educators to now, a 66-acre campus amid the natural beauty of the Santa Monica mountains and more than 50 faculty and staff. One of the most important of these factors has been our community’s commitment to volunteerism and philanthropy. Without these two components, Berkeley Hall School would not have thrived, and our children, the broader community, and, indeed, the world would not have benefitted from the inspiring and positive difference this school has made over the years. On behalf of the school, I want to thank all those who have contributed time and resources to support the educational mission and vision of Berkeley Hall School. This 2014-15 Report of Giving is a recognition of all those who have generously supported our mission with time, talent, and resources during the past fiscal year. Volunteerism and philanthropy have been indispensable to the success and growth of Berkeley Hall since its very beginning, and the support of the donors listed in this report has enhanced and strengthened our ability to achieve our mission today and in the years to come. Your support enables our committed faculty and

02

staff to maintain a student-centered learning environment that is keenly focused on helping every one of our students fulfill his or her unlimited God-given potential as a fearless scholar and conscientious citizen. In my time at Berkeley Hall, I have been truly impressed by our faculty and students’ energy and enthusiasm as well as their shared commitment to learning, growth, and improvement. It is a privilege to be a part of this wonderful community. I look forward to strengthening our partnership and advancing Berkeley Hall School to new and greater levels of excellence. Sincerely,

Lisle Staley, PhD. Head of School

Berkeley Hall is a premiere independent school today thanks to the dedication and expertise of its faculty and administrators, generous supporters, and committed volunteers, most notably the members of the Board of Trustees. Trustee leadership and governance guides Berkeley Hall’s progress in implementing its Strategic Plan and roadmap for advancing and fulfilling the school’s mission. Berkeley Hall School is grateful for the devoted service of Doug McCormick who rotated off the Board at the end of the 2014-15 school year, after fifteen years of service to the school. His leadership, counsel, and business and financial acumen are greatly appreciated. And Doug, as you join the special group of former Trustees, please know that you will always be a valuable member of the Berkeley Hall community, and we look forward to your continued involvement in the life of the school.

Darrin brings to the Board over 20 years of experience in commercial real estate, providing advisory services to private companies and government agencies nationwide. He is currently a Managing Director at Colliers International where he co-founded GSAXCHANGE, a division specializing in investment sales and financing of government-leased properties. Darrin earned his B.A. in International Political Economy from UC-Berkeley and his MBA in Finance from the Wharton School.

ear Friends,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to acknowledge and thank those who contributed to Berkeley Hall during the 2014-15 school year. Contributions to Berkeley Hall come in many forms, including cash, checks, stock, myriad auction items for our fundraising gala, an occasional vehicle, time, energy, ideas, and creativity. These contributions come from faculty and staff (often outside the typical school day), parents, grandparents, alumni, foundations, businesses, trustees, and friends. We deeply appreciate the support, financial and otherwise, that they provide. In terms of financial contributions, these supporters donated nearly $600,000 last year, which was off from the prior year in what was a time of transition in the Development Department at Berkeley Hall. Nearly 80% of current BHS families participated in our Annual Fund, while 100% of our faculty and staff added their financial support. Our sincere thanks also go out to all who contributed their time, energy, creativity, and ideas. It seems no one has “spare” time anymore, and yet dozens of parents contribute hundreds of hours to help Berkeley Hall on an annual basis. A special thank you is owed to our Mothers’ and Dads’ Clubs for the many activities that provided financial contributions and, more importantly, opportunities for involvement in the Berkeley Hall community. I would like to recognize the members of the Board of Trustees who contributed financially as well as countless hours behind the scenes throughout the year. In June the Board bid a reluctant goodbye to Doug McCormick. We are grateful for Doug’s many years of service to Berkeley

Hall, and especially for his lengthy tenure in heading up the Finance Committee and so effectively handling all the joys that come with budgets and audits. At the same time, please join my Board colleagues and me in welcoming our newest trustee, Darrin Kennedy. The financial resources our donors provide enable Berkeley Hall to grow, innovate, and strengthen its academic program, learning environment, student experience, and community. We are all fortunate to be part of the Berkeley Hall family, but the children are the true beneficiaries. In no small part, that is due to the efforts and contributions of Berkeley Hall supporters dating back decades. Working in partnership with our parents, alumni, friends, and supporters going forward, I am confident that the children attending Berkeley Hall in the future will be equally blessed. With gratitude,

Margaret Andrews Board Chair

Strategic Plan The following strategic plan has been adopted by Berkeley Hall’s Board of Trustees. This plan sets the agenda for the Administration and for the Board for the next five years.

Berkeley Hall, a nursery through eighth grade school, was founded in 1911 by two dedicated educators, Leila and Mabel Cooper. Their approach to education was rooted in their study of Christian Science, which recognizes that God-given qualities are a part of each child’s nature. This approach is still the core of a Berkeley Hall education. Our teachers, all of whom are active Christian Scientists, cherish each child as inherently intelligent, good, inquisitive, and uniquely talented. They help students exceed expectations and encourage exploration and discovery, while supporting and nurturing them. Berkeley Hall is not a church-supported or parochial school. The Christian Science religion is not taught in the classrooms, but spiritual principles of love, respect, and self-esteem underlie all aspects of school life. Our balanced learning environment includes the advancement of intellectual, moral, social, artistic, and physical capabilities. Character education has always been an integral part of our program. The school is committed to serving a diverse student body and seeks applicants with records of strong academic ability and achievement, solid citizenship, and high moral values. Parents must embrace the academic and ethical standards of the Berkeley Hall community and be willing to participate as partners with the school in their child’s education.

he financial support provided to Berkeley Hall by its donors and benefactors enable our teachers and administrators to provide students with an outstanding high school preparatory education that will help them reach their full potential. Indeed, the high schools to which Berkeley Hall graduates matriculate clearly recognize them as fearless scholars and conscientious citizens. They recognize our students as young people who know themselves and know what they want to contribute to their school communities. They recognize our students as inspired learners, strong, selfdirected leaders, academically and socially prepared to contribute greatly to their respective high schools and beyond. The top high schools in the Los Angeles area want our students because they know that Berkeley Hall graduates go on to do great things. This is borne out in high school admittance statistics every year. For the class of 2015, approximately eight-out-of-ten of our graduates got into their top-choice school. That’s huge, and speaks volumes about Berkeley Hall’s excellent reputation!

REPORT OF GIVING

PROFILE IN GIVING

Mark and Shainaz Burg 1

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO MAKE SUPPORTING BERKELEY HALL SCHOOL A PHILANTHROPIC PRIORITY FOR YOUR FAMILY?

3

We feel so blessed to be a part of this community, where our children are happy and encouraged to learn in a nurturing environment. Giving back philanthropically to our school, allows Berkeley Hall to grow and provide even more opportunities for ALL of our children to develop their love of learning. It allows us as parents, to be a part of a greater legacy, that continues to give back long after our children leave.

2

THINKING BACK TO YOUR FIRST DONATION TO BERKELEY HALL SCHOOL IN 2010, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THAT CHECK?

Over the years, our family has developed relationships with our teachers that are based on respect of each other’s roles and a mutual goal to see our children thrive. We deeply appreciate that there is always an “open-door” policy of communication, not just as parents, but for our daughters too.

4

Mark: It was important to me to support my children’s school. Their early education is the foundation for the rest of their lives. Whatever we are able to contribute as parents, really helps. Shainaz: To be honest, I was coming from a different country, a different school system and didn’t fully understand the importance or necessity of contributing to a private school annual fund. I quickly learned that many of the programs my children were benefitting from, as well as the socio-economic diversity that we embrace, were outside of operational costs and only possible through private support. I felt thankful towards every Berkeley Hall family whom had included my children in their vision of a better school. That feeling of gratitude was my inspiration.

YOU’VE OFTEN MENTIONED THE IMPORTANCE OF BHS TEACHERS IN THE LIVES AND EDUCATION OF YOUR DAUGHTERS. WHAT HAVE YOU LOVED MOST ABOUT THE BERKELEY HALL FACULTY OVER THE YEARS?

HOW HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE CHANGED IN THE FIVE-PLUS YEARS YOU HAVE BEEN A BERKELEY HALL PARENT? Our perspective has definitely shifted from our early years at Berkeley Hall, from focusing mainly on our own children, to wanting to be a part of a greater commitment to education and the success of our school.

5

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO PARENTS THAT ARE NEW TO BERKELEY HALL TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL PHILANTHROPICALLY? Get to know Berkeley Hall. PROFILE IN GIVING

The Pécheck Family 1

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO MAKE SUPPORTING BERKELEY HALL SCHOOL A PHILANTHROPIC PRIORITY FOR YOUR FAMILY?

4

We’ve been BHS parents for a very long time now and when we look back, it’s really astonishing to see how much the school has grownalmost as much as our children! We’ve always valued the school, but it’s been exciting to see the academic progress that’s resulted with the changes in curriculum during the last several years. Our older son and daughter both entered the same high school in their 9th grade year, and while our son was prepared and ended up being quite successful in high school, we have to say that our daughter (four grades behind our son) was noticeably even better prepared academically when she began high school this year.

BHS has been the community in which we have raised our family. Not only a school, but in all practical purposes our neighborhood. We’ve been so grateful to raise our children alongside other families that share our emphasis on character as well as academics, and therefore we, of course, prioritized our giving to something that held so much value for us.

2

THINKING BACK TO YOUR FIRST DONATION TO BERKELEY HALL SCHOOL, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THAT CHECK? We’ve been BHS parents since 2000. That’s long enough that it’s hard to remember when we first wrote a check to Berkeley Hall, but we’ve felt it was important to support the school on a yearly basis, since each year has its own needs for scholarships, campus improvement, sports program, and other activities that require additional giving.

3

YOU’VE OFTEN MENTIONED THE IMPORTANCE THAT BHS TEACHERS IN THE LIVES AND EDUCATION OF YOUR CHILDREN. WHAT HAVE YOU LOVED MOST ABOUT THE BERKELEY HALL FACULTY OVER THE YEARS? BHS teachers are the heart of the school. I’ve always felt it was a team effort raising our children and the BHS teachers have been working right alongside us. The emphasis on both strong academics and sound moral character are what we’ve always felt distinguish the school, and the example set by the teachers in both character and academics really provide the basis of the BHS education.

HOW HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE CHANGED IN THE YEARS YOU HAVE BEEN A BERKELEY HALL PARENT?

5

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO PARENTS THAT ARE NEW TO BERKELEY HALL TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL PHILANTHROPICALLY? We would encourage new BHS parents to really get involved with the school, by donating both financially and volunteering for school events. Children sense when their parents are truly invested in their education, and as a result, are more committed themselves. Also, being able to support the school has enhanced our kids education in so many ways—with sports teams, a broader community of students and an opportunity for teachers to continue their education as well.

Ways to GIVE Berkeley Hall, like most independent schools, relies upon charitable gifts beyond tuition income to support and strengthen its academic, artistic, and athletic programs. The special attributes that set Berkeley Hall apart—small classes, individualized instruction, innovative teaching, a diverse student body, a spectacular 66-acre campus amidst the beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains, well—maintained facilities, and dynamic, enriching educational opportunities beyond core classes—are costly to provide and maintain. Rather than simply increasing tuition by whatever amount is necessary to support them, we solicit tax-deductible donations through various philanthropic initiatives that help Berkeley Hall and enable families to give based on their ability.

CASH, CHECK, OR CREDIT CARD Your cash gift is tax deductible within the guidelines established by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Cash gifts can be made by check or can be charged to your Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card, or American Express. Credit card gifts can be made online at www.berkeleyhaIl.org/give by contacting Sara Swallow at sswallow@berkeleyhall.org or at (310) 476-6421 x206.

RECURRING GIFTS Berkeley Hall provides the opportunity to give at any frequency or recurring time periods. If you are interested in giving a monthly, quarterly, or yearly donation, please visit our website at www.berkeleyhaIl.org/give.

MATCHING GIFTS Gift matching is a way to increase the value of your own charitable gift through your employer. Corporate Matching Gift programs are a great way to double or triple your gift. Some companies match gifts made by employees, retirees, and/or spouses. You can check with your employer or on the Berkeley Hall website at www.berkeleyhall. org/waystogive to determine if your gift is eligible for matching. Simply send us the appropriate paperwork from your employer’s Human Resources Department, and your gift to Berkeley Hall School will be matched according to your employer’s guidelines. We will take care of the rest.

STOCKS OR BONDS Should you wish to make a donation of stock and/or bonds to Berkeley Hall, please visit www.berkeleyhall.org/waystogive for more information.

GIFTS-IN-KIND We welcome gifts of goods or services that may provide a budgetary savings to Berkeley Hall to fulfill a particular departmental or educational need. To discuss the tax and other benefits of making a gift of real estate, contact Rick Fields, Director of Advancement at (310) 476-6421, x-203.
