Now you can tune your earlyWinter outfit to perfectly match your physiology, the intensity of your ride, and your local weather conditions.

TECHNOLOGY Focusing on the ASSOS core competences of fabric, tailoring and know-how, iJ.haBu5 represents the first of a new generation of ASSOS high performance insulator jackets. Featuring the new Campionissimo racing specific AEPD, and the STRATAGON family of high performance fabrics (active multi-layer shield membranes). Developed exclusively for ASSOS by ASSOS Textile Laboratory.

ENGINEERING In creating Campionissimo, the new ASSOS line, ASSOS has re-engineered its product creation and development process. We no longer construct apparel in the obvious, traditional way. Instead we have developed a unique ASSOS method, which takes a more scientific approach to how we create, develop, engineer and construct ASSOS apparel. Watch out for more of this in the future. THE CONSTRUCTION The iJ.haBu5 features 18 pattern pieces and 6 different textiles. The chest panel, upper arms and collar are made from ASSOS stratagonLight™ fabric, which is a wind block. The sides, lower arms and back panels feature ASSOS RXQ™ textile (actively breathable heat retention) for perfect body temperature control. Our objectives with this replacement for the elementOne jacket were to lower both the volume and weight of the garment, while increasing protection and wearable comfort range. iJ.haBu5 weighs 40 grams less then an elementOne. It features new airBlock™ protection and additional performance enhancing details. iJ.haBu5 fits perfectly into the temperature ranges between an intermediateEvo and airJack.

13,200 KILOMETERS IN 69 STAGES 5 REST DAYS 6 TRANSFER DAYS - COUNTRY AND CONTINENT - BY BOAT AND PLANE. NO TIME TO RECOVER FROM JETLAG

The comments above summarize my challenge which was literally to be a mad ride in the footsteps of Phileas Fogg, hero of a famous novel by Jules Verne. Following the same route ...but on two wheels. 13,200 km in 69 stages (4 times as long as the Tour de France), 5 days rest and 6 days of transfers by boat and plane between countries and continents. No delays also meant no time recover from jetlag. Since the unexpected was waiting for me at every turn, I wanted to cover all eventualities. I had already tested the quality of ASSOS products during 15,000 km of training in the 6 months before departure. Therefore, I knew, when packing my bag, that the experts at ASSOS had thought of everything to protect me, whatever the weather. I knew I could also count on my friends, Chris and Bruno to follow me with a camper and keep me supplied with food, water and support, as well as my ASSOS wardrobe.

Early on, lashed by torrential rain, I slipped on the climaJet Breaker with pleasure. At the top of the Mont Cenis mountain pass, on the border between France and Italy, I was lucky to be able to take a luftSchutz jacket out of my back pocket. This very light jacket is just like a second wind and water resistant skin. It is a perfect windbreaker and keeps you warm when your entire body, still sweating, could quickly be freezing cold. I also wore it on the descents of 3,200 m mountain passes in Colorado, USA. In Italy, my experience of a heatwave first began. This continued in Greece and India. The UV & chill-resistant armProtectors were invaluable. They prevented burning when the sun was highest in the sky. After the tropical heat of India, I made the crossing of Australia. August is of course the heart of winter in the Southern Hemisphere. Fortunately, it is relatively mild in the desert between

Perth and Sydney. The IntermediateEvo and ElementZero tops were perfect, to ensure my body avoided excessive temperature changes. Later, I had to cross the U.S.A. from San Francisco to New York. Travelling across large areas of the arid and hot Far West, I was able to extensively test the quality of FI. UNO_S5 shorts. Even after more than 10,000 km, they are still in excellent condition. Used with ASSOS Chamois CrĂ¨me, they allowed me to finish my round the world trip with no skin irritation, even after riding 6 to 7 hours a day for 3 consecutive months, and being washed and dried every night in campsites. “ASSOS WAS OUR TOP CHOICE. WHEN THEY AGREED TO SUPPORT US FOR ALL THE CLOTHING WE NEEDED, WE WERE LITERALLY JUMPING AROUND THE ROOM LIKE LITTLE BOYS ON CHRISTMAS MORNING.”

PEACE PEDALERS “I WOKE UP ONE MORNING IN THE FALL OF 1999 AND REALIZED I WOULD NEVER REGRET DOING A BIKE TRIP AROUND THE WORLD. BUT THERE WAS A VERY GOOD CHANCE I WOULD REGRET NOT DOING IT.’ Jamie Bianchini is pursuing one of those ideas that often float around over coffee in bike shops and cafes of the world, often without ever being fulfilled. But, this story ends differently. The 38-year old, from California, is currently riding his tandem bicycle around the world, picking up total strangers along the way. Inviting these strangers to build friendships as they ride together, and share the same passion for cycling that we at ASSOS have. Jamie calls his adventure Peace Pedalers. It is driven by an ambitious and worthy goal. Put simply, to promote peace, from the grassroots up, one tandem rider at a time. If this sounds like something he came up with during a late night at college, you’d be right. That's how it happened for Jamie and best friend, Garryck Hampton. Five years after graduating, Jamie found the two-wheeled call of the roads and trails of the world too loud. While most other 23-year old business school graduates were seeking their fortune, buying cars, signing 30 year mortgages and starting families, Jamie couldn’t stop thinking about his dream to pedal the planet. To connect with its people and make a positive difference in the world. In contrast to his mundane, but well paid job, in Silicon Valley, Jamie remembers the day he decided to pursue his dream. “I woke up one morning in the fall of 1999 and realized I would never regret doing a bike trip around the world. But, there was a very good chance I would regret not doing it,” Jamie recalls. “I immediately had unwavering faith that I would realize this dream and live my life, finally feeling fulfilled, alive and true to myself.” The rest, as they say, is history. That same day, Jamie called Garryck to share and discuss the dream. They set their departure date for spring 2002, giving them two-and-a-half years to train, plan and save for this expedition. Ultimately, this adventure would span 84 countries and cover over 50,000 km of intercultural riding adventures. Jamie and Garryck began to prepare a list of the equipment required for this epic global journey. ASSOS was the logical first choice for their cycling apparel. “I had been using the same pair of ASSOS cycling bibshorts for years. On both fast and long rides I had already come to trust and value their comfort, durability and performance,” recalls Jamie. “ASSOS was our top choice. When they agreed to sponsor us for all the clothing we needed, we were literally jumping around the room like little boys on Christmas Morning.” After years of preparation, the day of departure was finally upon them. Their first destination was Japan.

This also created their first obstacle. Tandem bikes were illegal in Japan. For the first few days, Jamie and Garryck transformed their Black Sheep custom tandem-single mountain bikes back into single bike mode, until they finally decided to risk riding the bikes in tandem mode once more. After all, the tandem plays a pivotal role in the Peace Pedalers’ mission. They need it to ride and interact with local people. Luckily, the law against tandem bikes was not rigidly enforced. As they rode past policemen with their new guest riders, they were greeted with smiles and friendly gestures, not tickets and fines.

The incredible engineering of these garments kept our core body temperature stable over a wide range of temperatures. If I can stay comfortable in these kinds of extreme, harsh conditions then the rest of the expedition will be a pleasure!

A further obstacle encountered in Japan was the weather. They had expected to encounter mild spring weather, but instead were met with conditions that varied from hot sunshine to freezing rain and wind, often on the same day. “Spring in Japan is not like spring in California,” says Garryck. “We usually rode about 50 km before lunch. In the morning, we would set off in our ASSOS bibshorts, jerseys, leg and arm warmers to break the chill. In the afternoon, we applied sunscreen, expecting more sunshine, but this daily ritual only seemed to attract the clouds, cold temperatures and rain.” The Peace Pedalers relied heavily on ASSOS’ legendary Interactive bodyInsulators and the Clima system, to keep them perfectly comfortable in these variable conditions. Arm and leg warmers allowed quick insulation and protection, while various Airblock jackets and tights kept them warm on chilly mornings and over cold mountain passes.

Japan formed an incredible start to a journey that continued through Korea and China. Then they reached one of literally their biggest challenges, the Himalaya. Their adventure led them to Western China and the region of Tibet, where the roads wound through valleys and over seemingly endless mountain passes. For much of the trip, Mount Everest was ever-present in the landscape, and of course, each meter of height gained meant less oxygen for their tired lungs and muscles. Traversing peaks of up to 5,000 m meant other challenges: biting cold, wind and and dramatic changes in temperature. “It was in the Himalaya that we often wore Toe Covers and Overshoes to keep our feet toasty. Additionally, the Airblock technology in the jackets and tights is simply remarkable,” recalls Jamie. “This gear kept us warm during the icy descents. But, what really amazed us, was how we didn’t have to immediately shed layers or rapidly overheat, when we began climbing again. The incredible engineering of these garments kept our core body temperature stable over a broad range of temperatures. If I can stay comfortable in these kinds of extreme, harsh conditions then the rest of the expedition will be a pleasure!” Jamie is currently cycling in Central and North America and will be visiting the expedition’s 84th country in fall 2010. Giuseppe Ribolzi, Manager of ASSOS manga.Yio, the ASSOS Experience Superstore in Paradiso, Lugano, Switzerland discusses the new concept, which is already being heralded as a landmark for all keen cyclists

CYCLISTS’ PARADISE IN PARADISO LUGANO SWITZERLAND

You are a former professional cyclist. How has this experience helped you in building your current career? “The dream of working for such a prestigious brand as ASSOS is related to my passion for cycling. I started wearing ASSOS clothing when I began my racing adventure on two wheels at Velo Club Lugano. After competing for 20 years, I know that sport has greatly helped me in my ability to form relationships and to deepen my knowledge of other languages and cultures. It fostered my drive, competitive spirit and determination to pursue a goal, and not to stop, whatever the obstacle”. What were the key steps that led you to become Manager of the ASSOS Experience Superstore in Lugano? “My training at ASSOS began just over a year ago. I started by working in our warehouse before moving to our quality control department. After that I spent time working in our operational and administrative offices. Then, I went to the Research and Development Textile Laboratory in order to discover more about the secrets that result in ASSOS products. Lastly, I worked in the sales department, where I had direct contact with our national distributors, met and interacted with our private clients at our outlet in San Pietro di Stabio and also at the very first ASSOS franchise store in Frankfurt.” The ASSOS manga.Yio store in Paradiso, Lugano is set to become a landmark for cycling fans, not just from Ticino but also the rest of Switzerland, Italy and further afield. What do you think are the reasons for this success? “The conditions are perfect. We have many cycling enthusiasts and fans of our brand throughout Switzerland, over the border in Italy and in neighboring countries.

The Experience Superstore is ready to welcome and meet the needs of every cyclist, from the professional to the Sunday rider. manga.Yio Lugano is not just a shop, it is also our showroom and a benchmark for ASSOS National Distributors and ASSOS Authorized Dealers. Your customers come to you with high expectations with regard to the products offered. This requires special training for all ASSOS Experience Superstore staff. What must you do to achieve and maintain this high standard? “Every new manga.Yio staff member will undertake an intensive period of product training to enable them to deal with every customer request. Reflecting the decades-long success of our products, we aim to provide a unique, personalized retail service in all areas of what is a very ambitious project”. Research and innovation have been the cornerstones of ASSOS’ business success. What are the most interesting innovations in the areas of materials and technical solutions that you have seen? Our whole focus is research and development, and we always strive to bring innovative, original articles with the aim to satisfy the expectations of the even the most demanding ASSOS customers. We strive to make clothing that is lighter and more breathable, specifically cut for the body position you assume when cycling, plus original design with an ever-higher level of comfort. This Autumn will see a new family of laminated, multi-layer, intelligent fabrics (Stratagon) that are ultra-responsive to changes in temperature. Ticino is a land of cyclists. How do you explain the presence of so many cyclists, of all levels, on Ticino’s roads? Ticino is certainly one of the nicest regions areas in the world. During the Cycling World Championships in Mendrisio, we began our collaboration with the Ticino Office of Tourism. If the wine area par excellence of France is Champagne, then for cycling it is Ticino, cycling paradise and home of ASSOS.
