Genau dafür gehen wir täglich hier in Hamburg ans Werk und testen, schrauben und designen unsere Bikes immer wieder aufs Neue. Und das Controlling rechnet im Hintergrund eifrig mit: bei allem Anspruch wollen wir auch faire Kurse.

Schnell die Länge, Hub und Federhärte aufschreiben und im Internet das passende Schnäppchen ordern? Die Wahrscheinlichkeit ist groß, dass der Schuss nach hinten los geht! Denn trotz der vielen externen Einstelloptionen ist Dämpfer noch lange nicht gleich Dämpfer – was in einem Bike super funktioniert, kann in einem anderen kompletter Schrott sein.

Tommy Marquardt, Bergamont Entwicklung, im Gespräch mit Rockshox technikern Tommy Marquardt, Bergamont development, talking to Rockshox technicians.
Es gibt zu viele Variablen, von der Hinterbaukine matik, über das Übersetzungsverhältnis bis hin zu zahlreichen Abstimmungsmöglichkeiten im Inneren eines Dämpfers, die am Ende über einen guten oder eher miesen Hinterbau entscheiden. Die externen Knöpfchen sind sozusagen das Feintuning, das ohne ein vernünftiges Grundsetup keinen Sinn macht. Woher ich das alles weiß? Ich habe es ausprobiert! Nicht irgendwo, sondern in Finale Ligure, beim SRAM Ridecamp. Das ist eigentlich eine geschlossene Veranstaltung nur für SRAM-Kunden, die ihre Bikes mit Rock ShoxFederelementen ausstatten. Ich hatte die spannende Möglichkeit, ein paar Tage lang dabei zuzusehen, wie die Hersteller gemeinsam mit den Rock ShoxTechnikern an den Setups für ihre 2012er Bikes arbeiten und konnte diesen Abstimmungsjob sogar selber ausprobieren: dafür bekam ich ein Specialized „Pitch“ und hatte die Aufgabe, die „perfekte“ Abstimmung eines brandneuen Rock Shox „Monarch Plus“ Enduro-Dämpfers zu entwickeln. Als ich in Finale am „Basiscamp“ eintreffe, erwartet mich direkt eine freudige Überraschung: ich treffe „Tommy T“, den ich schon seit meinen ersten DH Rennen des „North Short Cup“ rund um Hamburg kenne. Er ist mittlerweile Entwicklungschef bei Bergamont und fährt immer noch gern Downhill. Im Schlepptau hat er noch Frank „Hede“ Hedwig, der jedem deutschen Downhill-Rennfahrer ein Begriff sein sollte. Auf ihrer „To Do Liste“ steht: Abstimmung der 2012er Dämpfer für das neue „Straitline DH“ (ein Rock Shox „Vivid“ kommt dort hinein) sowie das „Threesome“ Endurobike (das einen „Monarch“ bekommen soll). Dass ich die beiden hier treffe, zeigt mir sofort: das hier hat nichts mit grauer Theorie und Computersimulationen zu tun, sondern hier heißt es: fahren, fahren, fahren! Und das nicht nur für die BergamontJungs: eine Crew von Rose Bikes ist vor Ort und ich sehe in einer Kiste Prototypen mit „Lapierre“ Aufschrift herumliegen. Außerdem hat SRAM auch ein paar Teamfahrer geladen, um von ihnen direktes Feedback zu bekommen. Long Distance-Profi Rene Wildhaber ist da und auch

The external knobs are, so to speak, the fine-tuning that make no sense with a sound basic setup. How do I know all this? I’ve tried it! Not just anywhere, but in Finale Ligure, at the SRAM Ride Camp. This is actually a closed event only for SRAM customers to equip their bikes with Rock Shox suspension elements. I had the exciting opportunity to watch this for a few days, as the manufacturers together with the Rock Shox technicians tried out the setups for their 2012 bikes and was even able to try the tuning job myself: I got a specialized “pitch” and had the task to develop the “perfect” tuning of a brand new Rock Shox “Monarch Plus” Enduro shock absorber. When I arrive in the finale at the “Base Camp,” a pleasant surprise awaits me: I meet “Tommy T” who I’ve known since my first DH race of the “North Short Cup” around Hamburg. He is now Head of Development at Bergamont and still loves downhill. In tow he’s got Frank “Hede” Hedwig, who every German downhill racer should be familiar with. On their “To Do List” is: 2012 shock tuning for the new “Straitline DH” (a Rock Shox “Vivid" will go in) and the “Threesome” Enduro Bike (which is to get a “Monarch”). The fact that I meet these two here makes it clear that this has nothing to do with boring theory and computer simulation. This means ride, ride, ride! And not just for the Bergamont guys: a crew from Rose Bikes is also here and I see a box on the ground with prototypes labeled “Lapierre.” In addition, SRAM has also invited a few Team Riders for getting direct feedback. Long Distance pro Rene Wildhaber is here, along with freeride and dirt jump expert Pierre-Edouard Ferry (“PEF”) and downhill rocket Danny Hart from England also have the honor.
Freeride- und Dirtjump-Experte Pierre Edouard Ferry („PEF“) sowie Downhill-Rakete Danny Hart aus England geben sich die Ehre. Die Jungs nehmen natürlich eine Sonderstellung ein, denn bei ihnen geht es nicht um serientaugliche Allroundsetups, sondern um ultimatives WettkampfTuning. Deshalb steht ihnen auch John Cancellier zur Seite, seines Zeichens Chef des „Black Box“ Programms, das jedes Jahr neuen, heissen Race-Pimp hervorbringt, von dem aber am Ende immer auch jede Menge in der Serie wieder zu finden ist. Danny Hart vergleicht gerade den „Vivid“ Dämpfer mit seinem Luft Pendant „Vivid Air“, probiert die unter schiedlichsten Setups aus und überlegt schon mal, welchen Dämpfer er beim Worldcup-Auftakt in Südafrika verwenden möchte. Also entstehen die kompletten Setups nur durch Ausprobieren? Nicht ganz. Rock Shox-Abstimmungs profi Torben erklärt mir, wie es geht. Bevor es in Finale auf den Trail geht, gibt es ein paar theoretische Vorgaben, anhand der man schon mal einen einigermaßen passenden Dämpfer als Ausgangs basis bestimmen kann. Ausschlaggebend dafür sind die Hinterbaukinematik und das Übersetzungsverhältnis von Hinterbau und Dämpferhub. „1 : 3“ bedeutet zum Beispiel: taucht der Dämpfer einen Zentimeter ein, kommen am Hinterbau 3 cm effektiver Federweg hinaus. Dabei macht es einen großen Unterschied, ob man „1 : 2,8“ oder „1 : 3,4“ hat. Kennt man diese Werte, kann man den vermutlich schon ganz gut passenden „Dämpfertune“ bestimmen. Wie schon erwähnt: die externen Schrauben von Zug- und Druckstufendämpfung sind eher Feintuning für den Fahrer. Entscheidend ist die interne Abstimmung, die man mittels verschiedener „Shim“-Pakete erreicht. Diese „Shims“ sehen aus, wie super dünne Metallspacer und jedes für sich ist ziemlich flexibel. Im Dämpferinneren versperren sie kleine Bohrungen, durch die das Öl beim Ein- und Ausfedern strömen muss. Das Öl drückt also auf die Shims und biegt sie sozusagen auf, um sich freie Bahn zu verschaffen.
The boys naturally have a special position here, because with them it’s not about from-the-rack, allround setups – it’s about the ultimate race tuning. Therefore they’re also accompanied by John Cancelliere, who is the head of the “Black Box” program, which each year brings forth new, hot, race pimped machines, from which a lot ends up in the series production, too. Danny Hart is comparing the “Vivid” shock with its air counterpart “Vivid Air,” trying out all kinds of setups and ponders which shock he will use at the World Cup opener in South Africa. So does the complete setup only come about though trial and error? Not quite. Rock Shox tuning god Torben explains to me how it works. Before the finale on the trail, there are a few theoretical guidelines that allow you to reasonably determine the right shock absorber. What is decisive for this are the rear triangle kinematics and the gear ratio of the rear triangle and the shock absorber hoist “1 : 3” means, for example: if the shock absorber dips one centimeter, it effectively results in three centimeters of suspension travel in the rear triangle. Therefore, it makes a big difference if what you have is “1 : 2.8” or “1 : 3.4.” Knowing these values, you can probably determine a very appropriate “shock-tune.” As I mentioned: the external knobs of compression and rebound damping are mainly fine-tuning for the rider. The decisive factor is the internal tuning, which can be achieved using different “shim” packets. These “shims” look like super thin metal spacers and each is fairly flexible. Inside the shock, small holes are blocked, through which oil must flow when compressing and rebounding. So the oil is pressed on the shims and bends up, so to speak, in order to gain free rein.

Andy Eyrings wm-Bericht aus USA. andy eyring's Wm-report from the states. Nach dem überraschenden Ausstieg beim Rennen in Mont Sainte Anne wegen Atemproblemen, konnte ich mir eine Woche später mit Platz 12 die WMQualifikation sichern. So richtig rund lief es in den vergangenen Wochen nicht für mich. Zu sehr hatte ein eigentlich als Training und Aufbau geplantes Etappen-Rennen in Norditalien Kraft und Substanz gekostet. Doch bei den beiden Weltcups in Nordamerika sollte alles anders werden. Frischen Mutes flog ich über den Atlantik. Doch schon der erste Einsatz beim Rennen im kanadischen Mont Sainte Anne ließ Schlimmstes befürchten: geplagt vom Jet Lag biet an und einer plötzlichen Hitzewelle im Skige den Ufern des Sankt-Lorenz-Stroms nörd lich von Quebec musste ich bereits in der zweiten Runde das Rennen vorzeitig beenden. Ich habe kaum Luft bekommen und kam den Schotterweg einfach nicht hinauf! Das kannte ich bislang so nicht. Und da ja auch die Rennen vorher nicht so richtig toll liefen, habe ich schon begonnen, an mir zu zweifeln. Ich habe gemerkt, wie es in meinem Kopf anfing, zu arbeiten – und das ist immer gefährlich für Motivation und Leistungsfähigkeit. 70
After the surprising exit in the race in Mont Sainte Anne because of respiratory problems, I was able to secure World Cup qualification a week later with a 12th place. Things haven’t really gone too well for me in recent weeks. A training and build-up stage race planned in Northern Italy was too costly in terms of strength and substance. But in the two World Cups in North America, everything was supposed to be different. With fresh courage, I flew across the Atlantic. But even in the first race in Mont, Sainte Anne the worst was to be feared: plagued by jet lag and a sudden heat wave in the ski resort on the banks of the St. Lawrence River north of Quebec, I had to finish the race prematurely in the second round. I could hardly breathe and could simply not make it up the gravel! This has never happened to me. And since the races before were not all that great, I’ve began to doubt myself. I’ve noticed how it started to work in my head – and that’s always dangerous in terms of motivation and performance.

Und weiter geht’s. And things keep rolling. Um weiter ohne Hektik an meiner Form arbeiten zu können, werde ich bis zur WM nur zwei, dafür aber wichtige Rennen bestreiten: Am ersten AugustWochenende finden in Dohnany, Slowakei die Europameisterschaften statt, zwei Wochen später im italienischen Val di Sole das Weltcup-Finale. Nach kurzem Besuch zuhause bin ich nach Livigno abgereist, um dort mit der Nationalmannschaft noch zehn Tage zu trainieren, danach steht der gleiche Zeitraum noch ein wenig zur Erholung zur Verfügung. Und zwischen den beiden Rennen werde ich zehn Tage in einem Höhentrainingslager in St. Moritz verbringen. Mein großes Ziel sind die beiden verbleiben den Meisterschaften in Dohnany und Champéry. Die Zeit dahin reicht, wieder optimal in Form zu kommen – es darf halt nichts passieren. Für mich sind dies die letzten Europa- und Weltmeisterschaften in der U23-Klasse: ab kommenden Jahr muss ich mich mit der Elite messen. Also jetzt meine Chance nutzen – 2012 wird alles viel schwerer!
In order to continue to work without hassle on my form, until the World Cup, I will only participate in two important races: on the first weekend in August, the European Championships take place in Dohnanyi, Slovakia and two weeks later in the Italian Val di Sole, World Cup final. After a short visit home, I leave to Livigno to train with the national team for ten days and afterwards there will be the same amount of time for rest and relaxation. And between the two races, I’ll spend ten days in an altitude training camp in St. Moritz. My main goal is the two remaining championships in Dohnanyi and Champéry. The time until then is enough to return to peak condition – as long as nothing happens. For me, these are the last European and World Championships in the U23 Class: as of next year, I’ll have to compete with the elite. Luft holen vor dem Start. Und dann los! Breath deep before the start. Then let it all go! Ich konnte mich für das nächste Weltcup-Rennen gut 700 km südlich in Windham, New York gut erholen und ausreichend vorbereiten. Ich wollte unbedingt ein gutes Ergebnis aus Amerika mit zurück bringen. Und „gut“ hieß Top 15 – das ist nämlich die Qualifikationsnorm für die Weltmeisterschaft Ende August in Champéry in der Schweiz. Und trotz nicht wesentlich anderer äußerer Bedingungen lief es für mich in den Catskill Mountains deutlich besser als noch in der Woche zuvor: mit einem Blitzstart ging es schnell auf Rang 3! Aber ich gebe zu, dass mir das hohe Tempo an der Spitze definitiv zu schnell war. Es war klüger, die anderen ziehen zu lassen, um nicht unnötig und zu früh meine Körner zu verschießen. Es zeigte sich schnell, dass bergauf immer noch die Kraft fehlt – bergab allerdings fand ich zu alter Technik und Sicherheit. So kam auch die Geschwindigkeit zurück, sodass ich, nachdem ich mich etwa auf Platz 13 eingependelt hatte, diesen Rang auch konstant halten konnte. In der vierten von fünf Runden bekam ich dann auch noch die sogenannte „zweite Luft“. Doch obwohl ich die letzten beiden Runden in guter Zeit absolvierte, reichte es dann doch nicht mehr zu einem Platz unter den besten zehn. Das wäre vielleicht möglich gewesen, aber ich freue mich auch über den erreichten 12. Platz. Das ist wichtig für den Kopf, aber auch, um überhaupt noch meine Saisonziele erreichen zu können. Qualifikationsnorm für die Weltmeisterschaft in Champéry erfüllt!

I was able to to recover and prepare well enough for the next World Cup race a good 700 km to the south in Windham, New York. I wanted to bring a good result back from America. And by “good,” I meant in the top 15 – which is the qualification standard for the world championships in late August in Champéry, Switzerland. And despite a lack of any other real external conditions, things went significantly better for me in the Catskill Mountains than the week before: with a lightning fast start, I was immediately at rank 3! But I admit that the fast pace at the top was definitely too fast. It was wiser to let the others up the pressure to not have to spend my wad too fast. It quickly became obvious that I still lack the pressure for ascending – downhill, however, I got back my old technique and safety. So I was able to regain the speed after I had leveled off at about 13th place, and was able to maintain the ranking. In the fourth of five laps I got what is known as the “second wind.” But even though I had completed the final two rounds in good time, it was no longer enough to place among the top ten. Mit dem Team „on the edge“, 2010 von SRAM und Bergamont ins Leben gerufen, und meinem Teampartner Josua Hein ist eine echt gute Kombo entstanden. Es macht Spaß, wir entwickeln uns weiter und haben entsprechend Erfolge. 2010 war ich bereits Deutsche Meisterin im Downhill Women Elite und 2011 konnte ich diesen Erfolg tatsächlich wiederholen. Da liegt die Latte für Neues ziemlich hoch – und deshalb muß ich jetzt auch gleich wieder los!

Ja, in der Tat, Travis Pastrana bei MTV Nitro Circus bewundere ich irgendwie. Vollkommen irre, was der mit seinem Freestyle-Team da so alles anstellt. Mir geht es aber nicht vordergründig ums Spektakel, für mich ist das in erster Linie Sport. Eine Erklärung? Hab ich nicht. Ich empfehle mal – den Jungs und mir einfach zugucken! Yes, in fact, somehow I admire Travis Pastrana on MTV Nitro Circus. It’s totally crazy, all the things he does with his freestyle team. In my opinion, it’s not about the spectacle, for me it’s mainly sports. An explanation? I don’t have one. I can only recommend you watch the guys and me sometime! 76

Der Azhi Dahaka ist ein dämonischer Drache aus der persischen Mythologie. Dieser war an den Damavand gekettet, den mit 5.610 m höchsten Berg Irans und des gesamten Nahen Ostens. Der Österreicher Unternehmensberater Andreas Steiner, erfahren in Extremtouren, will 2012 mit einem Bergamont Bike diesen Gipfel bezwingen. Was noch niemand vorher versucht, geschweige denn, geschafft hat.
The Azhi Dahaka is a demonic dragon from Persian mythology. It was chained to the Damavand, the highest mountain in Iran, which is 5,610 m and the highest mountain in Iran and the entire Middle East. The Austrian management consultant Andreas Steiner, experienced in extreme tours, wants to conquer the summit in 2012 with a Bergamont. Something nobody has every achieved, let alone attempted.
Dazu Andreas Steiner: „ Mein Ziel ist es, von Teheran (ca. 1.100 m) über das letzte Dorf, Reyneh (auch „Lager 1“ genannt), über Fahrstraßen nach Gsfandsara („Lager 2“) zu fahren. Von hier führt ein Wanderweg hinauf zu „Lager 3“, einem kleinen, bunkerartigen Gebäude mit Übernachtungsmöglichkeit und Wasserstelle auf etwa 4.150 m Höhe. Bis dorthin möchte ich mit dem Bike fahren, nochmals übernachten, um dann am nächsten Tag noch bei Dunkelheit zum Gipfel aufzubrechen. Im obersten Teil des Berges überquert man sandige Hänge mit zahlreichen kleinen Löchern im Boden, aus denen Schwefelgase aufsteigen. Normalerweise kann der Gipfel völlig ohne Schneekontakt erreicht werden. Danach folgt ein irrer Downhill-Ritt von über 5.600 Höhenmeter bis zum 175 km entfernten Kaspischen Meer.“ Wir arbeiten gemeinsam mit viel Engagement und Spaß an den Vorbereitungen des richtigen Bikes und der perfekten Abstimmung für diesen extremen Einsatzzweck und werden bei Zeiten über alle Akti vitäten auf facebook berichten. Andreas Steiner says: “My goal is to ride from Tehran (1,100 m) via the last village, Reyneh (also called “Camp 1”), taking roads to Gsfandsara (“Camp 2”). From there, a hiking path leads up to “Camp 3,” a small, bunker-like building where one can spend the night plus watering hole at about 4.150m. From there, I would like ride the bike, spend the night again and then start off at the break of dawn in the dark to reach the summit. In the uppermost part of the mountain, you cross sandy slopes with numerous small holes in the ground, where rising sulfur gases pervade. Normally, the summit can be reached without any contact with snow. Then, an insane downhill follows from over 5,600 meters down 175 km down to the Caspian Sea.” We’ll be looking with great enthusiasm for the ideal, perfectly balanced bike.
