EDITION 1 | 2019 | BICSC.ORG.UK

Welcome to this edition of our industry magazine THE STANDARD. As we have been leading in Training & Standards since 1961, this edition will see us look back at how far we have come. Inside you can read about one of our longest serving members Ron McNicol who joined us all the way back in 1968. Yes, that is before I was born! Last year saw us go from strength to strength, we exhibited at the Manchester Cleaning Show, Interclean and the BACHE Conference, we also hosted successful membership events. Our training offering grew and has been enhanced by Cleanlogic™ - our very own brand of Courses and Workshops, and if that wasn’t enough our membership is now 30,000 strong. We are definitely creating careers in cleaning!

01 | THESTANDARD

In November we were crowned winners of the Raising the Initiative within the Professional Cleaning Sector Award at the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards in Berlin, an achievement of which we are extremely proud of. Team BICSc will be moving into a new home, we have acquired number 4 Premier Court, this means that number 8 & 9 will become the BBS Training Suite, a dedicated training facility where we can extend our training offering. Inside you can find out more about our HQ move and the expansion of BICS Business Services (BBS)- The only place to start your journey with BICSc accredited training. In September last year we welcomed over 200 guests to our main event, the 2018 Annual Awards, Education Programme and Exhibition. The 2019 BICSc Annual Awards, Showcase & Exhibition

will take place on 26 September 2019 at Whittlebury Hall in Northamptonshire. Check out the Award’s categories, who knows maybe 2019 is your year to take home a BICSc Award. Team BICSc are braced for another busy year, we will be launching our very own App designed to cut out paperwork for the Assessor. You can find out more about this later in the year. I am looking forward to catching up with our members at our networking events called ‘BICSc Labs’ throughout the year. You can also catch us at the London Cleaning Show in March, if you are attending the show drop by, we will be happy to talk to you about Membership, CPSS, Cleanlogic™ Courses & Workshops, BICSc colour coding and much more. In July you can catch us at the popular BACHE Conference at Keele University. Whatever happens this year for our industry, our mission remains – To raise the standards of education and to build awareness of the cleaning industry through professional standards and accredited training! We hope you enjoy this issue.

The Chairman’s note, Sue Robinson, FBICSc MBA We left 2018 on an incredible high with the British Institute of Cleaning Science being awarded the ‘Initiative in raising the profile of the cleaning sector’ prize at the European Cleaning and Hygiene Awards. It was wonderful to see first-hand, the Institute’s work officially recognised with this award. What perhaps is most striking is not only how much the Institute has achieved in elevating the cleaning industry over the last 50 years, but also the amount of innovation and improvement we have seen in the past year. The Institute has made progress in many areas including increasing membership numbers, providing additional training courses and more recently the acquisition of a new property for our headquarters. We are facing a period of considerable change, with lots of initiatives on the horizon and I am eager to see BICSc embrace these in the coming year.

There will be elections to Council during the year and this will give members an opportunity to put forward their names for election. The role of a Council member is an important one and their input helps shape the future of the business. The elections will take place later in 2019 and details will be announced shortly. The BICSc Annual Awards, Showcase & Exhibition will be on 26 September 2019. This is a prestigious event in the calendar, and I urge you all to consider entering any relevant award categories. Becoming a finalist and ultimately, a winner, is recognition of your achievements and the Awards provide an opportunity to showcase your success. I am looking forward to meeting many of you during the year at the various BICSc events around the country. Best wishes for 2019.

Ron McNicol Celebrating 50years Page 5-6

Looking Back with Rachael Giles ABICSc,

Communications Executive

By the time this article is published it will be three years since I walked through the doors at 9 Premier Court. In that time, the cleaning industry has evolved considerably, from advanced technologies to shifting attitudes towards ‘green cleaning’. I’ve never been more amazed by an industry I once knew nothing about. It seems like the perfect moment to look back at how far BICSc has come in that time.

03 | THESTANDARD

Before the 1960’s there was no association to represent the cleaning industry. The sector was largely unregulated and offered little in the way of formal training. Back then, cleaning education was rarely considered beyond a supervisor telling a cleaning operative what to do; a long way from the number of structured courses and qualifications available today. Like with many organisations there have been challenging times, the economy has not always been on our side and the negative attitudes towards cleaning have proved difficult to shift. Yet despite this, the Institute has remained strong, and in the last 50 years our headcount has increased more than ten times. BICSc is now one of the oldest industry associations in existence today, and our success (I believe) is down to the Institute’s ability to adapt and keep ahead of all the developments the industry throws our way. One thing which has remained constant over the years though, is our mission; ‘To raise the standards of education and to build awareness of the cleaning industry through professional standards and accredited training’. Since BICSc was formed in 1961, we have

campaigned to raise awareness of the necessity of accredited training and standards for the cleaning industry, with the overarching purpose ‘to teach to clean’. One of the Institute’s first developments was a best practice colour coding system more than 25 years ago, as well as pioneering the development of some of the industry’s first practical qualifications. In 2012, BICSc went on to introduce an entry-level standard for the cleaning sector with the launch of the ‘Licence to Practice’. The introduction of the Licence to Practice qualification was the first definitive step toward achieving widely accepted industry standards. Employers could now begin to regulate, a previously unregulated industry, ensuring cleaning operatives were competent in their role and compliant both with BICSc accredited standards and health and safety requirements. Today, the Licence to Practice proves to be the most sought-after qualification amongst cleaning operatives worldwide; however, there are now over 30 skills available to train in, through the recently updated ‘Cleaning Professional’s Skills Suite’, as well as advanced technical skills in our new Cleanlogic™ Courses and Workshops.

As we have grown over the years to support these developments, the Institute has moved premises a number of times. Our first home was in Took’s Court in London, before moving to the Hop Exchange Building at 24 Southwark Street in 1972. It wasn’t until 1988 that Northampton become home to the Institute’s headquarters, and in 2003 BICSc purchased its current home, 9 Premier Court which was later expanded with the purchase of the adjourning property in 2009. The increase in demand we have seen for training in the last 12 months alone however has called for another move, which will see our headquarters relocate into number 4 Premier Court, situated just across from our current location in Moulton Park. This will be the sixth move in the history of the Institute, but possibly the most significant as it will allow for the development of a dedicated training centre which will take over our current headquarters. I am excited to see all of these changes take fold over the next few months, and if the next few years are anything like the last, we have a lot to look forward to.

Chief Operating Officer update,

Neil Spencer-Cook, MBICSc Hello to you all and welcome to 2019. Here at BICSc we are looking forward to this year and all it can bring, we have quite a number of exciting changes coming. Firstly, we are madly trying to get everything in place so the HQ team can move to number 4 Premier Court, this is likely to happen in early March 2019. Then the development of the BBS Training Suite can go full steam ahead. We are also working on the review of the Cleaning Professional's Skills Suite, to make sure it is up to date and this ties up nicely with the BICSc Assessor App, which is currently in production. This will mean skills assessments can be done on a hand-held device and the Assessor paperwork will be reduced by the ability to submit from the app. BBS is having a good start to the year, the training calendar is full and the enquiries continue. Over the past year we have updated how we manage feedback from our candidates who have received training, and I am pleased to announce that our NPS (Net

Promoter Score) has risen to 73. This is a great position to be in and I would like to thank our customers and members for taking the time to complete these forms, we are always keen to take into account your constructive comments and improve where we can. The new Accredited Trainer Course is now available, and the first Accredited Training Organisations will be awarded their Accredited Training Member logo shortly, please speak to BBS or Customer Support with any queries about these. Cleanlogic™ Courses & Workshops are proving to be popular and often become full very quickly. Check out our training page on our website or even Eventbrite for availability. It’s all go here at HQ and as ever we are enjoying helping our members and customers wherever we can. Thank you all for your continued support of the Institute, and we look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events or at one of the Shows.

Member's Story Meet Ron McNicol, one of our longest serving members

Having started a family, I sought a steady job with a regular salary and ideally with a vehicle supplied. Columbus Dixon was a large company which could provide that opportunity. I had researched the company and knew there would always be a need for people to clean. That was in 1962 - I was successful over the next nine years and became the Columbus Dixon Regional Sales Manager for Scotland. I joined BICSc in 1968 and encouraged my salesmen to join in the seventies, because I recognised how important it was that our prospects and customers saw that we were trained in cleaning and committed to our industry.

Ronald William McNicol joined on the 25th June 1968, here is his original certificate. To mark the occasion, Ron got in touch with us recently and shared a short story and some great photos.

05 | THESTANDARD

Ron’s Story On leaving the RAF in 1956, I decided I wanted to be a salesman. Over the next five years, I had several commission-only jobs including Encyclopaedia Britannica, establishing whether I could ‘sell or not’.

There were many humorous incidents over the years, but one that springs immediately to mind was carrying out a major demonstration at Raigmore Geriatric Hospital in Inverness. We have all, at times, sectioned off an area of floor using mop buckets and Kentucky long handled mops, draped horizontally. That day, there was an older gent in jacket and trousers, leather patches on elbows, tie askew with Elastoplast holding his glasses together at the bridge. He kept stepping over the mop handles onto the demonstration area. My colleagues, Jimmy Leslie and Bill Simpson kept taking his elbow to gently usher him off the demonstration area. We thought he must have been a patient. In those days, hospitals were controlled by the Hospital Secretary and the matrons. On completion of the demonstration, we were all taken up to the Secretary’s office to get ‘the anticipated large order’. All of us were assembled and drinking tea and in came the consultant psychiatrist Hospital Secretary. Of course, it was the older gent with the Elastoplast glasses – he did in fact sign the order! Several years later, I was also in charge of the North of England with, in addition to the Glasgow office, a second office in Leigh. Columbus

X Dixon was holding a training course on mechanised cleaning for contract cleaner companies in the Greater Manchester area. This was held at the Portman Hotel in the centre of the city. When staying at a large hotel, often after breakfast, most of us went out to the front of the hotel for a breath of fresh air. There, that morning, I was approached by the roving reporter from Piccadilly Radio, with the feared hand-held X microphone. He addressed me with “I X understand you are in charge of this course on mechanised cleaning”, I nodded. He then asked me “are you aware that this morning, The Prime Minister has announced that she is putting all government cleaning contracts out to tender?

X

So, does this mean the end of Mrs Mop?” Of course, these were the days before wi-fi and rolling news, so I had no prior knowledge of this, but thinking on my feet, I replied:

Myra and Ron in their showroom at Ryeside Mills.

“On the contrary, it will mean the upgrading of Mrs Mop. She will become a technician, once trained on these machines.” The reporter did not reply. I left Columbus Dixon in 1979 and formed my own company, Clean Plan Systems Ltd with my wife and family. In 1985, we bought a factory in Ayrshire for our premises. This was the factory I first met my wife in when we were both working there back in 1954.

Myra and Ron with their children Steven and Liz.

As you can see from Ron’s story, BICSc was just 7 years old when Ron joined back in 1968. Ron met his wife in a factory when they were teenagers, they went onto to get married and have 2 children, they actually ended up purchasing the same factory where they met and ran their cleaning supplies business from there. They sold the business some years ago, and now Ron works as a consultant for Portland Janitorial. Here they are, check out those Electrolux Vacuum Cleaners, how times have changed!

Thanks to Ron and family for sharing these pictures.

Here is Ron with a customer in his showroom at Ryeside Mills, the place he bought with his wife Myra where they ran their business from.

The Technical Edit With Denise Hanson, Head of Technical Services Scrubbers and Strippers Common Issues and Solutions Well apart from the raised eyebrows of non-cleaning personnel, or the misplaced hopes perhaps, we in the industry are approaching silly season when it comes to the scrubbing back, stripping and resealing of floors. Following the winter use of grit and salt to avoid slipping on the pathways, comes the customer requirements for floor to be returned to a uniform

appearance of either soft sheen or high gloss. One of the big issues that our industry faces is that lots of the knowledge of this periodic task is in the process of retiring and taking this knowledge along with them. Speaking as someone who finds it both relaxing and rewarding to spend time restoring a floor to a smooth even sheen, I am keen that this key

Issue

Probable cause

Possible solution

Strong unpleasant odour during scrubbing / stripping process

The area isn’t well ventilated

Improve the areas ventilation or use a weaker solution

Hot water has been used rather than cold – always check the manufacturers operating instructions

Use cold water to make the solution

The floor is bleeding colour as you scrub

Check that you are using the correct type of product – remember that Lino floors are incompatible with ammoniated stripping agents

Stop the operation, remove the applied solution and rinse – any colour loss or change is irreversible!

Allow contact time in line with the manufacturers instruction before commencing scrubbing

Provide a minimum of 5 minutes contact time before starting to scrub the floor

The polish isn’t lifting from the floor

Check the dilution rate is correct

Slow drying Poor finish / shine

Use the correct type of product – check the floor type and the manufacturers recommendations

Low temperature

Raise the temperature

Poor ventilation

Increase ventilation

Polish applied too thinly

Check the coverage by the manufacturer’s instructions Check if the product had been diluted Add coats to the floor until the required finish is achieved Clean all equipment, restrip floor and reapply polish Strip polish fully and reapply

Powdering of the floor surface – white powder on the floor surface following usage of the floor

Floor has not been neutralised following the use of alkaline products

Neutralise the floor with vinegar solution after stripping prior to applying polish

Inadequate stripping procedure

Check the conditions prior to stripping and polishing the floor

The shine / gloss doesn’t last

Incorrect maintenance product

High humidity or cold conditions

Too harsh a floor pad for the cleaning operation Polish applied too thinly

Slippery floor

High levels of dust Contamination Excessive polish

Strip polish fully and reapply

Check for the correct product and the correct dilution Use the softest pad that will achieve the results required Apply additional coats Always dust sweep after buffing if there is not a vacuum unit on your machine Dust mop or vacuum the floor regularly Check for contamination and remove according to type Top strip to remove excess and check the frequency of re-application

07 | THESTANDARD

As you can see from the table there are a couple of complete myths regarding floor stripping, many are both expensive and ineffective so please always dilute your products according to manufacturer’s instructions – products need water to activate their ingredients! Also adding boiling water to speed up the process or remove edge build up actually deactivates the active ingredients, making your job harder still.

So, the simple advice; Check for wear or clogging – clean or change for a new pad of the correct type

Dirty equipment used to apply polish

There are of course some mysteries and myths that go with practising this art and some very common issues that face any floorcare operative, this piece will cover some of the common ones. So, let’s have a look at some of the problems that floor teams may face.

Check manufacturers’ instructions

Incorrect or worn/clogged pad

Insufficient number of coats

knowledge is passed on and provides other operatives with the chance to review their hard work with pride.

Read the manufacturer’s instructions for all the products that you are going to use. Allow the stripping agents contact time with the floor to soften the polish. Use the correct pad for the floor type (Linoleum floor is too soft for the use of a standard black stripping pad). Rinse or neutralise the floor after stripping. Ensure all equipment is clean and fit for purpose. Allow the coats of polish to completely dry before applying the next coat. If all of this seems too complicated, look out for the launch of the BICSc Technical Floorcare modules which provide hands on experience of floor scrubbing, stripping and sealing, and some hard-earned industry experience as the Trainers for these courses are people who learnt from their mistakes!

Leading the way for a cleaner future After a hugely successful year for the Institute, BICSc is relocating its headquarters to allow for the development of a brand-new training suite, dedicated to delivering BICSc accredited training. In this feature we take a look at what lies in store for the future of BICSc. Cleaning is an industry increasingly led by technology, with lots of innovations on the brink of becoming commonplace. From electrostatic cleaning sprays to robotics and data-driven cleaning, to be the best you have to embrace the changes that lie ahead. This is where BICSc is leading the way by taking career progression seriously with the recent development of Cleanlogic™ Courses and Workshops, providing cleaning professionals with the knowledge to manage an entire cleaning operation. Earlier in 2017, the Cleaning and Support Services Industry Research Report revealed that in coming years there will be a marked increase in enhanced qualifications and expansion in technical roles (The British Cleaning Council, 2017). This was certainly demonstrated with the demand seen for Cleanlogic™ in 2018. The training proved so popular that the Institute made the decision last year to move its headquarters to make way for a dedicated BBS Training Suite. The new BBS Training Suite will deliver BICSc accredited training, including the ‘Licence to Practice’ Skills Training from the ‘Cleaning

Professional’s Skills Suite’, as well as Cleanlogic™ Courses and Workshops at number 9 Premier Court, Moulton Park in Northampton, which has been home to BICSc headquarters since 2003. The current BICSc HQ will move in early 2019 to number 4 Premier Court, across from its current location. The move comes as a result of a highly successful year, which saw a strong technical team put in place enabling BICSc to deliver the majority of training in-house, Cleanlogic™ Courses and Workshops taking off and membership numbers increase dramatically. Plans are now underway to invest further in training with the launch of additional Cleanlogic™ Courses and Workshops, as well as other initiatives to enhance customer service. These initiatives will be driven forward with the development of the brand-new BBS Training Suite, allowing the Institute to focus on establishing BICS Business Services (BBS) as

‘the only place to start your journey with BICSc accredited training’. The redevelopment of the current BICSc headquarters into a dedicated BBS Training Suite will allow for a significant improvement in the facilities and learning experience offered to candidates. Not only will this allow a higher volume of training to take place, but there will also be a greater ability to expand capacity going forward. We are at a time where BBS is delivering more training than ever before, and with no sense of this demand dropping this is a great start to planning for the future.

Perceived Cleaning Faults and their Possible Causes with James Marston Cleaning Method Failure Scale Build Up

METHOD Chemical ineffective on the substance to be removed. Soil and scale not identified or regular cleaning practice is not sufficient.

CAU

SOLUTION

SOLUTION Limescale is generally described as a white substance consisting chiefly of calcium carbonate and other materials deposited by water. These deposits build up on taps, kettles and boilers.

Limescale can build up quickly in parts of the country where hard water exists (water is taken from underground sources which contain greater amounts of sediments).

Limescale cannot be removed effectively using multipurpose cleaning agents. Acid based chemicals known often as descaler should be applied which react or dissolves the limescale allowing it to be washed away.

Cleaning frequencies should take into account hard water supplies and regular descaling of taps and fittings should take place.

Agitation with a non-scratch pad can speed up the process. Operators must follow the manufacturer’s instructions ensuring enough contact time is given for the solution to react with the limescale allowing the operator to remove all traces. It should be noted that not all descalers are suitable for chrome and stainless steel.

13 | THESTANDARD

Training and assessment using the Cleaning Professional's Skills Suite (CPSS) Base Unit 13 Cleaning Washroom Facilities will ensure your operators remain safe, use the right cleaning techniques for a quality result.

EQUIPMENT & MATERIALS Descaling chemical not available. Non-abrasive pad or item to agitate effectively not supplied.

What is the Ishikawa Diagram? The Ishikawa diagram, is also called a cause and effect diagram or a fishbone diagram, is a visualisation tool for categorising the potential causes of a problem in order to identify its root causes... A fishbone diagram is useful in brainstorming sessions to focus conversation.

PEOPLE Not aware of the process to remove limescale. Not trained in the use of descaling products. Operator not complying with manufacturer’s instructions.

USES

PROBLEM

ENVIRONMENT Time pressures – many descaling products require contact time of several minutes to be effective. Limited resources to carry out descaling on a regular basis. Inconsistent cleaning activities or frequencies.

THE PROBLEM (HEAD OF FISH) A build-up of soil and scale is evident on the underside of a tap within a kitchen.

What can BICSc training do to help? BICSc offers practical training in the skills required to clean effectively and safely in today’s modern facilities. Candidates who attend our courses understand the risks to themselves and the client.

They understand and comply with safe systems of work and systematic ways to achieve cleaning tasks. Candidates learn effective cleaning techniques to ensure quality results and continuously high standards. 14 | THESTANDARD

Are you looking for some inspiration for your application? Meet one of our 2018 finalists Marie Allen from Vinci Facilities Marie’s career in the cleaning industry began with her need to support three young children following the sudden death of her husband. She joined OCS in Bristol as a Receptionist and cover cleaner. In 2000 she received her first BICSc training. This inspired her to develop her career in cleaning.

HEADLINE SPONSOR

In 2002 she took the role as Soft Services Manager in a large modern prestigious office. She enjoyed the leadership, teambuilding and client interface. In 2010, she TUPED over to Vinci Facilities. What impressed her most was the training and innovation that VINCI brought to the team. In 2011, Marie trained as a BICSc Assessor to enable VINCI to extend its in-house cleaning service. In 2013, she commenced her current role as the Regional Cleaning Manager responsible for Wales. For her being able to set up her contracts, working to BICSc principles and training the teams to BICSc standards gives her the consistency of approach.

PLATINUM SPONSOR

Marie says that people are her passion, she loves the challenges and individual personalities that people bring. Many find training rather daunting, but Maz has a great skill in putting them at ease and getting them to open up and enjoy it. For her that smile when she tells them that they have passed makes everything worth it.

GOLD SPONSOR

If you visit any of her contracts, Maz or the ‘lady from Bristol’ is respected by the teams for her warmth, empathy and sense of humour. She puts them at ease and inspires them by relaying her career path in cleaning, which began as theirs by doing her BICSc training.

Introducing our new Accredited Training Member Logo In the last edition we talked to you about Accredited Training Membership. Here is an update. Being a company that trains to BICSc accredited standards can be entirely separate from being a Corporate member, and both attract a level of costs. However, so that this is easy to identify from January 2019 BICSc Accredited Training Organisations (ATO’s) will become a membership in itself, they will have their own logo and be identifiable by their membership type, an Accredited Training Member. This will open up the member benefits to all ATO’s and make it easy for anyone to see your commitment to BICSc accredited training. This will mean that there are no longer two fees to pay for an ATO and membership, it will be one fee per ATO. There will be differing levels of this membership depending on two factors, whether your ATO is Static or Roaming and how may Assessors are licensed to your ATO. BICS Business Services (BBS) can cater to your needs and guide you through the process to become an ATO......BBS is the only place to start your journey to BICSc accredited training.

WHAT WILL THIS COST ME? If you are an existing ATO, at your annual renewal you will be quoted for your new membership, any Corporate membership already paid for, but unused, will be credited against this. Your Account Manager will help you through this change, and it will also allow you to pay on annual or monthly direct debit should you wish to do so, spreading the cost.

If you wish to become a new ATO, please contact BICS Business Services (BBS) so that they can organise the training required and quote you for the correct level of membership. Your training will be an upfront cost, but your level of membership is payable by direct debit. While we fully appreciate this will be quite a change for our current ATO’s we hope that this will prove to be more beneficial for all concerned going forwards.

> Please also remember that if you are a Corporate Member you should be using this logo.

BOTH THE ACCREDITED TRAINING MEMBER AND CORPORATE MEMBER LOGO ARE VERIFIED BY YOSHKI. IF YOU NEED SOME ASSISTANCE WITH THIS OR WOULD LIKE TO CHECK YOU ARE USING THE CORRECT ONE, PLEASE CONTACT OUR CUSTOMER SUPPORT TEAM MEMBERSHIP@BICS.ORG.UK WHO WILL BE HAPPY TO ASSIST YOU.

How clean is our country? By Helen Bingham, Director of Communications. The cleanliness of our streets, parks and beaches matters. It matters to the people who live, work and play there and it matters to the economy of an area too. No one wants to buy a house, go shopping or spend their precious time – and money - in an area that looks like no one cares. We now also know that litter has consequences that may not, at first, be apparent. When Sir David Attenborough showed us the impact that plastic pollution was having on our oceans in Blue Planet II, he threw a spotlight on an issue that starts much closer to home. 80% of marine litter – including plastic – comes from the land. The cigarette butts, sweet wrappers and crisp packets that are thoughtlessly discarded on our streets find their way to our oceans via our drains, river and canals.

Add to this the fact that the top three most frequently found littered items – cigarette butts, confectionery packaging and nonalcoholic drinks-related containers – are predominantly made of plastic and it is easy to see that our littering behaviour is contributing to the wider plastic problem on a daily basis. Local authorities currently spend more than £700 million a year on keeping our streets clean, a huge amount of money that could be better spent on social care, schools and other vital services.

environmental charity whose mission is to do just that – Keep Britain Tidy. In March 2019, we will be running the Great British Spring Clean – the country’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign, with the aim of getting 500,000 people involved in cleaning up our street, parks and beaches and removing millions of tonnes of plastic from our environment.

This is why it is vital to change behaviour and make littering socially unacceptable and this is why it is vitally important that everyone gets behind the

And, unfortunately, our country is still blighted by this litter. Keep Britain Tidy’s latest survey shows that 14% of sites surveyed by the charity did not meet the acceptable standard for litter, rising to almost one in four (23%) in those areas with high-density housing.
