THE BRITISH INSTITUTE OF CLEANING SCIENCE

Dear members of BICSc Welcome to the summer edition of The Standard How is it half of the year has gone already? If the last few months have flown by for you then you’re not alone. We have been incredibly busy here at BICSc launching new training courses, attending the Cleaning Show, running our first few Roadshows, judging entries for The BICSc Annual Awards and there’s much more to come. In this issue, you will find updates on everything we’ve been working on so far this year, including some feature articles and news from our Associate Providers. If you would like to share any of your stories with us to publish in future copies of The Standard, please send them to marketing@bics.org.uk

We hope you enjoy this issue The British Institute of Cleaning Science

Hello from the verification team… It was a pleasure to see so many of you at the Cleaning Show in London earlier this year and what a fabulous time we had. Whilst I was there I took the opportunity to look around and was amazed to see so many new innovations, materials and consumables that are set to raise the profile of the cleaning industry. In May, we had the chance to support the Scotland Works exhibition in Glasgow at the newly included ‘cleaning show’. It has all the ingredients of being a show stopper in the future. We also recently showed our support at the BACHE conference in Belfast. It is important that we continue to support events such as these, where we have the additional opportunity of speaking to all our members and clients, as well as keeping up to date with the latest innovations. The word ‘robotics’ can alarm the best of us however we must embrace new technology as it enters our industry as it has many benefits for our cleaning operatives. As most of you are aware CPSS Version 3.0 is nearing completion and we look forward to its launch later this year. The Verification Team as always, are available to contact should you require support in-between your annual audits. We look forward to seeing you at our BICSc Roadshows and The BICSc Annual Awards, Education Programme and Exhibition in September. Maureen Kelso Head of Standards & Verification

The Cleaning Show 2017

More than 5,500 cleaning and hygiene professionals passed through the doors of the Cleaning Show at London’s ExCeL earlier this year, making it the most successful show yet. One of the main highlights was the free-to attend seminar programme which attracted over 1,000 visitors who gained expert advice on health and safety, growing your business and an insight into the future and the new frontier of robotics. On day one BICSc Council Member Lorraine Larman, who is also the Chairman of the Apprenticeship Trailblazers group delivered an insightful presentation on what the training levy will mean to businesses - and how will it benefit the cleaning industry. You may remember in our last issue we spoke about BICSc involvement in developing a new employer-led apprenticeship standard for cleaning hygiene operatives, which Lorraine spoke about in more detail during this session. The Cleaning Show was a great success for BICSc, providing the opportunity to meet BICSc Members and clients, as well as a wide range of new faces from across the industry. Paul Thornton, Sales Executive said “We had an excellent time at the show. It is clear that the cleaning industry is progressing quickly and as a result we are Left: Maureen Kelso, Head of Standards & Verification, Right: Paul seeing a trend in clients seeking Thornton, Sales Executive accredited training to improve their productivity and quality of cleaning services to keep up with customer demand.” The next Cleaning Show will take place in Manchester on 11-12 April 2018 at Event City. We hope to see many of you there.

2017 BICSc Roadshow tour update

The 2017 BICSc Roadshow tour is now well underway. The first event took place in April at the impressive Mansion House in Doncaster, and was recently followed in June by the Roadshow at Murrayshall House Hotel in Perth. Both events were a success and we were impressed with the amount of positive feedback we received from many of those who joined us. John Davie (MBICSc) who attended our Perth Roadshow commented “The presentations were delivered brilliantly by a range of talented experts. It was a truly great day with a dedicated team of professionals across the board. We will definitely be attending more BICSc events in the future.” The Roadshows provide BICSc members and cleaning professionals with the opportunity to network, share best practice and learn about the latest trends and insights from the cleaning industry. Joanna Begg, Customer Support Manager at BICSc who organised the events said “This year we have increased the educational content at our Roadshows as well as providing further networking opportunities which we hope will help our attendees take away even more from the events. We are looking forward to our next three Roadshows and hope to see many more of our members and clients there.” Our next Roadshow will be taking place in Cardiff University on 13 July. Each event covers different presentation topics so there is something new to learn from attending each one. If you are interested in attending, or would like to join us at one of our other locations visit the BICSc website to book your tickets.

Feature article: Don’t let the bedbugs bite this summer

If you’re going travelling this summer, make sure your holiday souvenirs aren’t the only thing you’re bringing back home with you. It may come as a surprise, but bedbug prevalence is on the rise, and hotel rooms are amongst their favourite hangouts. A 2015 Bugs Without Borders study found that bedbug treatments are significantly higher than they were 15 years ago, and New York City hotels alone saw a 44 percent increase in infestations for January 2016 compared to 2015 (and that even included five-star hotels). So, what can you do to prevent a bedbug infestation coming back home with you? To minimise your risk of picking up these unwelcome visitors, experts say you should never set your luggage on a hotel bed or floor. Bedbugs can easily hitch a ride on your luggage and clothes without being noticed so it is best to avoid the risk of contamination if you can. When unpacking, it is best to use luggage racks to hold your luggage and when returning home, unpack directly into a washing machine and inspect your luggage carefully before allowing it near your bedroom. “Bedbugs are least likely to be found in the bathroom,” says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association. “They don’t like the tile floors, and there aren’t as many hiding places.” When you arrive at your hotel room, it is a good idea to put your luggage in the shower or bathtub while you inspect the room for any signs of an infestation. Check under the bed sheets, all the way around and under the mattress as well as behind the headboard. If you see any suspicious signs, alert the hotel staff immediately. But what do you do if are the hotel staff? If you’re involved in cleaning hotels, then these statistics will probably alarm you, but there are plenty of things you can do to help prevent a bedbug infestation taking over your hotel. Although bedbugs have not been directly linked to poor cleanliness, maintaining good levels of hygiene has been found to reduce the instances and level of infestation. Poor housekeeping can make it harder to identify bedbugs before they get out of control. The NHS advises; “Keep bedrooms tidy and remove clutter, especially from the floor and under the bed, this will reduce the amount of places for bedbugs to hide in.” It is also a good idea to regularly vacuum and clean mattresses to remove any dead skin cells and dust which may attract these insects. The best thing you can do is make sure all your cleaning operatives are correctly trained in these procedures to reduce the chance of an infestation. Leicester Hospital: BBS Associate Provider secures contract A transformation team from Environmental Excellence Training and Development Ltd (BBS Associate Provider) was called in to help prepare the country’s newest NHS Emergency Department for opening. The team spent two weeks carrying out a clinical clean prior to the April opening of the £48m new build at Leicester Royal Infirmary. Environmental Excellence’s executive director Delia Cannings said the BICSc model of training was instrumental in enabling her 10-strong team to successfully complete the demanding and ever-changing challenge. “The BICSc model equipped them to not only do a great job at Leicester, but also to build an excellent relationship with the in-house team and share best practice,” she said. “They were empowered to respond to priorities as they arose, due to an understanding of the principles, processes and practices required to achieve a superb quality, compliant finish.” Environmental Excellence, based near Birmingham, is a solutions provider which, alongside offering training, development and audit work, provides specialist cleaning services including clinical, theatre, deep cleaning and floor restoration. The opening of Leicester’s new Emergency Department marks the first stage in a five-year, £320 million strategic plan. It serves a population of 1.3 million and is one of the busiest in the country.

1st CCS Group celebrates 20 years of service with BICSc Corporate Member banners

1st CCS Group, have been delivering cleaning services at St Andrews Links for the last 20 years, working closely with the structured management they undertake the delivery of daily routine cleaning duties along with reactive, planned maintenance and world class events. To celebrate their 20 years of service the group were presented with two BICSc Corporate Member banners on the St Andrews Links golf course. Throughout the years, 1st CCS have faced tremendous challenges, particularly when the Home of Golf holds the Open Championships and other worldwide events. John Davie (MBICSc), Managing Director, CCS Contract Cleaning Services Ltd. said “The high level of footfall during events has a direct impact on surfaces, which our cleaning operatives must adapt to. With extremes of footfall I believe ‘the safe way is the best way’. Professional cleaning and hygiene operations should work hand in hand with approved health and safety practices.” In today’s environment and with the mass of people attending large scale events such as the Open Championships, hygiene protection is a major factor in the control of any contagious diseases.”
