THE STANDARD Issue 01, 2015

DEAR MEMBERS OF BICSc Hello and welcome to the first edition of the Standard for 2015! The Standard is produced to keep our members up to date with the activities of the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc). The content includes news updates, projects, networking opportunities and other information that is useful for BICSc members. If you are a member and would like to share useful information with fellow BICSc members via this publication, please email marketing@bics.org.uk.

Many Thanks The British Institute of Cleaning Science

Since the last ‘Standard’ was produced we have had a fantastic few months with very positive feedback from CPSS 2.0 and SU2 Biohazard Decontamination Cleaning proving to be a great hit. We are currently working alongside a Corporate Member to provide recognition for those cleaning operatives who work in zero hour contracts, production and events to ensure they are not missed by the industry. This is guiding us to look at approaches which are suited to our customers’ business requirements whilst maintaining our mission. Our Approved Associate Training Providers are assisting greatly in the delivery of CPSS 2.0 with positive comments from their trainees. Having recently attended the Cleaning Show at London Excel we had a great few days welcoming both current and prospective new members as well as seeing some great products and innovative ideas.

UPDATE FROM SUSSEX ESTATE FACILITIES Following all 140 staff gaining their Licence to Practice (PBICSc), Sussex Estate Facilities are continuing to improve their cleaning operatives training. The BICSc assessment team at the Sussex Estate Facilities LLP have now begun their next step in BICSc training. After 140 of their Housekeeping and Cleaning Team members passed their Mandatory units gaining their Licence to Practice (PBICSc) card, they have now unlocked the route to Base and Additional units from CPSS 2.0.

All 140 team members are now being put through their 12 skills in both these units.

NEWS STORIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

BICSc INTERNATIONAL Concordia Improves Employee Engagement & Retention Levels With BICSc Standards

Transguard become an ATO!

Concordia is a facilities management company based in Dubai, employing over 600 staff they offer a wide range of FM services. After newly becoming an Accredited Training Organisation (ATO) BICS International asked Concordia a few questions to find out how they felt about becoming an ATO. Why did you decide to become a BICSc ATO? This was a fantastic opportunity for us to improve our training standards and to provide a quality service to our customers. In addition, gaining accreditation from the largest independent professional body with the industry is another selling point to our clients. We know competitors are now starting to do the same, but we are proud to say we were one of the first in our region to become accredited. We hope that by providing quality training to our staff we will increase employee engagement and improve retention levels. How did you find the ATO set up process? The process itself was relatively straightforward and I would say to any one thinking about becoming an ATO to go for it. BICSc take care of most of the organising and provide detailed information on what is needed. How do you think BICSc will make a difference in your organisation? The colour coding system is really simple and easy to use. We have a lot of different nationalities all with different levels of English language skills. This can prove challenging when training staff, however by training them on BICSc colour coding it makes things so much simpler. We are also expecting an improvement in safety standards too by following the code. Provide any staff feedback so far? Staff have been very positive after the training and have expressed to management and supervisors their appreciation in learning new skills. One staff member commented on how the training has helped to provide a safer working environment which is extremely important to them when they are supporting family members back in their home countries. Faisal Fitriansyah Soft Services Manager – Concordia

“The accreditation with BICSc and the knowledge we have gained in terms of training, assessment, practical skills and operational procedures has revolutionized the way in which our personnel operate and how we deliver our services. We have seen significant improvements in productivity, efficiency and safety and we consider BICSc as a key part of how we differentiate ourselves from other service providers in the region.” Becoming BICSc accredited not only improves the chances of getting more clients, it also leads to front line staff feeling more professional about the work they do. The set up is simple, BICSc staff will guide you through the whole process and as many major clients in the Middle East now insist that their FM provider is BICSc accredited, it makes sense to take the training to stay ahead in a very competitive market.” Annie Vodicka Manager – Transguard Training Academy

DUSSMANN SERVICE TALK ABOUT BECOMING A BICSc ACCREDITED TRAINING ORGANISATION Dussmann Service is the largest division of the Dussmann Group. It was established in 1963, and is part of an international service company with more than 61,000 employees providing services in 22 countries across the globe. Contributing over 80% of total sales, Dussmann Service plays a central role in the Dussmann Group’s success. Dussmann Service is one of the biggest players in the contract cleaning market, but they still want to grow and be the best at what they do. That means staying competitive and displaying to clients their desire for quality and high standards, and so they took the decision to become a BICSc Accredited Training Organisation (ATO). Here Dussmann Service explain their reasons for becoming a BICSc ATO. Why did you decide to become a BICSc Accredited Training Organisation (ATO)? Given that the FM market is extremely competitive, we wanted to further improve the standard of service that we provide to our customers by becoming certified with an internationally recognised association (BICSc). We felt that the design of the training met the needs of both our employees and clients, and there are many opportunities for our employees to put into practice the skills and knowledge that they’ve gained from the training. How did you find the ATO set up process? One of the best things about taking the accreditation was how easy it was to set up and implement. BICSc guided us through the whole process. It was very straight forward and everyone involved mentioned that the training was easy to follow and understand. How do you think BICSc will make a difference in your organisation? From a business perspective there is no doubt that this will help us to get new clients on board. It will add value to our entire cleaning operation, and especially to the onsite team, who can now follow the correct colour coding and can adhere to more efficient cleaning processes. We are expecting a big improvement in hygiene and safety standards by following the codes and its standards.

Is there any staff feedback so far? All the staff, involved in the training, have given positive feedback. The general consensus is that it provided them with helpful information and improved knowledge on cleaning processes. Another huge benefit was that the training helped them to boost their self-esteem in work and they reported back that they feel a lot better about the work they do. A number of them said they felt more professional as a result of this enhanced training and accreditation. Dussmann Service has demonstrated that becoming accredited not only improves the chances of getting more clients, but also leads to cleaning operatives feeling more professional about the work they do. Becoming accredited demonstrates to present and potential clients your firm’s commitment to high standards and in an industry where lack of control and poor quality service is rife, getting a standard such as this can mark you out from the crowd. Maria Fe Arobo Operations Executive Assistant – Dussmann If you want to find out more about becoming a BICSc Accredited Training Organisation (ATO), contact BBS on: +44 (0) 1604 678 712 or bbs@bicsbusinessservices.com

INSIDE HMP SEND TOM BULLIMORE

I started in a new role as BICSc Instructor at HMP Send in Surrey, I had spoken with my colleagues about this role and thought ‘I can do this’. I attended BICSc Assessor training in September 2014 to qualify and prepare me for this exciting position. I carried out my training at Environmental Excellence Education in Birmingham with Delia Cannings and her team. I had the most amazing and fabulous time, they taught me these life skills and showed me how to carry out my duties as a BICSc licensed Assessor effectively and professionally. I chose to become an ATE (Accredited Training Establishment) to enable me to accredit each learner to BICSc Standards. I believe that the skills learnt by each candidate will benefit them in their daily lives as well as giving them the skills and opportunity to gain future employment and avoid reoffending. My aim is to raise the standards of the cleaning service within the prison, educating both prisoners from the general population and the wing cleaning operatives in the effective delivery of the cleaning service. The outcome is a prisoner with a worldwide recognised qualification raising their self-worth and confidence, a cleaner prison and a more cost effective cleaning service. The qualifications gained by the prisoners will help set them up for life upon release, help them to resettle into the community and to rehabilitate them. In terms of the prison itself we have managed to raise cleaning standards across the board which is a real benefit to the prison.

NORTH WEST DRY FUSION WORKSHOP JOHN EDWARDS In November members of the North-West Region were given a most interesting and informative presentation about a new method of carpet and upholstery cleaning. The event was held at the Farington Lodge Hotel, near Preston. After an

excellent buffet lunch, Shaun Bradbury, Managing Director of Dry Fusion UK, gave an outstanding presentation of the method of cleaning that he had developed over a number of years. The benefits, supported by figures of percentage soil removal and time saving compared with other methods, were impressive. This was followed by a practical demonstration, including carpet spotting, also most effective. After the demonstration questions and discussion continued long after the scheduled time for closing the event. All those present considered that the time spent at this meeting had been well spent.

BICSc AND BBS AT THE CLEANING SHOW In March the Cleaning Show came to London’s Excel and the Institute was well represented with both BICSc and BBS sharing a stand with the British Cleaning Council (BCC). Despite the popularity of the show, there was a feeling in the industry that it needed a shot in the arm, so organisers Quartz and the British Cleaning Council decided to move it to London’s Excel from Birmingham’s NEC. It’s testament to the brand reputation of the Cleaning Show that so many big names kept faith with the show and exhibited at the Excel. Mite was the platinum sponsor, and they were joined by a host of leading industry names including: Numatic International, TL Killi, Karcher, Nilfisk, Kimberly-Clark Professional and many others. The exhibitor stands were bright and innovative and the product demonstrations were excellent. There was a steady flow of visitors throughout the three days, so the decision to move the show south does look to have paid off. BICSc and BBS benefited from being on the BCC stand which was in the centre of the hall on the main thoroughfare. The BICSc team on the

stand were able to speak with a wide array of visitors, and it was pleasing to be able to offer advice and guidance to those that stopped by. A popular feature at the previous show in Birmingham was the Innovation Awards, and these were back this time with broader categories, which attracted plenty of entries. The full list of winners can be seen opposite, but this year’s overall winner was, TL Killi’s iMop.

The decision to move the show south does look to have paid off. There was a large lecture theatre on site, and it was full to the rafters for the Innovation Awards, and indeed, for many of the keynote speeches that were held over the three days. The show kicked off with an inspiring presentation from former England rugby world cup winner Kyran Bracken, who spoke about the ingredients needed to build successful teams.

SOME EXHIBITORS HAVE SAID THE QUALITY OF VISITORS TO THE STANDS WAS HIGHER THIS YEAR, RESULTING IN MORE SOLID LEADS THAN AT THE PREVIOUS SHOW

BICSc Group CEO, Stan Atkins, took to the lecture theatre on the second day of the show to speak about the training landscape. Other speakers included the BCC’s Chairman, Doug Cooke and Caroline Reilly from the Living Wage Foundation, there was also a number of smaller seminars and workshops. Organisers Quartz and the BCC say that feedback after the show from both visitors and exhibitors has been very positive. Some exhibitors have said the quality of visitors to the stands was higher this year, resulting in more solid leads than at the previous show in Birmingham. A number of them have already re-booked stand space for the show in two years’ time. A successful Cleaning Show is vital for the entire UK cleaning industry, and that is why both BICSc and BBS took the decision to share the stand with the BCC this year – to show their support. The show helps to raise awareness of what we do and can only help as we endeavour to professionalise and enhance our industry.

SU2 BIOHAZARD DECONTAMINATION CLEANING FROM WITHIN A PRISON Hazardous Cleaning Within the prison service dirty protests are a rare occurrence, but when they happen, they disrupt the routine of the prison care, separation and hospital units, which are usually where these types of protests happen. They may happen because the prisoner is protesting about a particular issue, however sadly it may be due to more serious issues linked to the prisoner’s mental health. When these protests happen, the prison has a duty of care to relocate the prisoner to a clean cell. The contaminated cell is then cordoned off until it can be cleaned. Piloting the new SU2 Skill Over the past year HMP Cardiff have been asked many times to clean this type of protest, but until BICSc had piloted the SU2 Biohazard Decontamination Cleaning skill there were too many risks to allow a cleaning operative to enter into this situation. HMP Cardiff is pleased to have been able to participate in the pilot of this Specialist skill.  Three prisoners and Melanie Kelly, BICSc workshop instructor at HMP Cardiff, took part in the pilot scheme that was set up by Maureen Kelso, Head of Education and Standards at BICSc and Lesley Parish, Verification & Project Co-ordinator also at BICSc. The pilot scheme was set up to support prisoners in attaining their SU2 Biohazard Decontamination Cleaning qualification. This is the positive impact that it has had on our prisoners.

THE STANDARD Issue 01, 2015

Newfound knowledge and potential The most important rule is ensuring the safety and health of the person cleaning this area. At no time are they rushed, even if the cell is needed, they must follow the process completely so that they are not compromised at any stage during the cleaning procedure. With the risk of possible contamination being so high, not completing the task properly would leave the area potentially compromised. It is crucial a professional, safe and thorough clean is performed. Not all prisoners can cope with this type of cleaning, however, the prisoners who do put themselves forward for this type of training have carefully considered what this course involves, the potential risks and are very committed to attaining their qualification, most hope to attain work in this field when they are released. Melanie Kelly stated “From my point of view, as a Vocational Instructor, this is what my job is all about, I will have been able to equip

“I have found that the SU2 Biohazard Decontamination Cleaning skill is something that I have thoroughly enjoyed doing, I have learned the correct procedure of how to clean and eliminate biological substances that pose a threat to our health, i.e. body fluids, tissue matter, needles and medical waste. I have also learnt that health & safety is paramount and how important it is to leave areas hygienically clean and safe and that all contaminated items are disposed of in the correct manner. Doing my BICSc Cleaning Professional’s Skills Suite (CPSS 2.0) and the Specialist SU2 Biohazard Decontamination Cleaning skill has motivated me to want to start my own business, I look forward to making the most of the newly found skills and knowledge I now have in the future.” Pilot Participant

a prisoner with the means of supporting himself and his family which significantly adds to the rehabilitation process.” It has been fantastic to add an additional Specialist unit to the BICSc qualifications that were already offered at HMP Cardiff, particularly one that adds both value to the prisoner’s rehabilitation process and increases their chances of securing employment upon release, but also enables them to play an active and important role within the operation of the prison. Reg Fisher Industries Manager at HMP Cardiff said “Having prisoners up-skilled to undertake this kind of work within the prison has really changed other prisoners perceptions and behaviour, this is because they realise that their fellow prisoners will be involved in cleaning up any situation that they cause. Working with an innovative organisation such as BICSc, and having passionate workshop instructors like Melanie, has enabled us to do something really positive and exciting at HMP Cardiff.”

PRINCIPLE CLEANING SERVICES BECOME FIRST ORGANISATION IN UK TO BE CIMS CERTIFIED

www.bics.org.uk

Principle Cleaning Services is taking up the standard, and that means the many of the London’s most iconic buildings such as the Shard and the Gherkin will have the most meticulous cleaning management standards in the country. Principle manage the cleaning services at a number of prestige properties across London, and they have announced that all their contracted buildings within London will also become CIMS accredited. It’s an important milestone for CIMS in the UK, as the standard has only been available here for just over a year, but it now looks set to become as transformative for cleaning standards in Britain as it has been in the USA. The Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS) was first introduced in the USA by ISSA in 2006, and it has been transforming standards in the cleaning industry ever since. CIMS has been able to raise standards and set new benchmarks for cleaning companies to aim for. But

But organisations in the USA immediately saw the value of the program and a number of those present at the launch agreed to be part of a case study. The initial progress report showed that front line staff felt more valued, and they saw themselves as being more professional after taking the certificate, and as a consequence, were able to take more pride in their work. It also quickly became apparent that the certificate would bring firms a greater degree of leverage in the market place. Facility managers and procurement professionals started to embrace the standard and use it as a benchmark when buying cleaning services, and so CIMS became a powerful tool in winning contracts.

ISSA, together with BICSc rolled CIMS out during 2014, and have received an interest from within the cleaning industry, with Principle Cleaning Services being the first organisation to become fully CIMS certified. The desire to raise standards in the cleaning industry is just as great on this side of the Atlantic, and forward thinking companies like Principle Cleaning Services have identified that taking the standard can keep them one step ahead of competitors by showing an even greater degree of commitment to higher standards. as well as this, standards across the whole sector are bound to rise further still, as more and

It’s an important milestone for CIMS in the UK... it now looks set to become as transformative for cleaning standards in Britain as it has been in the USA.

Dan Wagner, director of facility service legislative affairs for ISSA, and the man responsible for getting the scheme off the ground, admits it wasn’t all plain sailing at the beginning, and there was a lot of scepticism in the industry at the time: “I can still remember handing out copies at shows in 2006 and the looks on people’s faces when we explained what we were hoping to do. It is certainly true that there were those who did not like our efforts to develop a standard, and those who felt it was a worthless pursuit.”

more facilities managers, and cleaning contractors, like Principle Cleaning Services see the value in becoming CIMS certified.

The standard was able to thrive in the USA due to a consensus in the industry, led by ISSA, but achieved with the involvement of cleaning contractors, facility managers and purchasing companies. It was a truly collaborative effort that now has in excess of 186 certified organisations in the USA. After the success the standard achieved in the USA, ISSA decided that CIMS should be available across the globe, and in 2014 chose the UK and Republic of Ireland to be the first countries outside North America to adopt the program.

Indeed, in North America, the certificate is now much more than just a badge of honour, many big organisations, and even government entities will only award cleaning service contracts to CIMS accredited organisations. Creating value and standards in an industry like cleaning isn’t an easy proposition, but when it can be achieved, as with the Cleaning Industry Management Standard, it means a new benchmark can be set. The bar rises, and smart companies know they have to rise with it.
