ust 99 miles east of Los Angeles, our alpine island in the sky enjoys four distinctive seasons, each offering an entirely new experience whenever you visit. Immerse yourself in the pleasures of vibrant autumn leaves, crystalline winter snows, rainbows of springtime wildflowers and the lake shimmering in summer as each season’s adventures delight.

Winter Hands down, Big Bear’s unparalleled trails and terrain parks at Snow Summit and Bear Mountain are havens for skiers and snowboarders. Between the two resorts enjoy 435 skiable acres, 26 lifts, four high-speed chairs, and more than 200 terrain features to ski or ride. But there’s more to Big Bear than its top-quality slopes. Strap on a pair of snowshoes or cross-country skis and venture into the flocked forest, where you’ll only brake for the occasional squirrel crossing! In the Village, browse quaint boutiques and one-of-a-kind shops. Then, warm up with a mug of hot cocoa inside a cozy diner. Join the kids for classic winter fun sledding or tubing at designated snow play areas. Free your inner child making snow angels or building a snowman in front of your cabin. When the sun goes down, cozy up to a toasty fire as a fresh snowfall silently blankets the sleeping town.

Spring Hop into spring and embrace the sights and sounds of the pine-scented forest awakening from its snowy winter wrap. We promise outdoor fun doesn’t melt with the snow. Springtime forests come alive with birds chirping and kaleidoscopes of wildflowers blooming alongside alpine and lakeside trails for walkers, hikers and mountain bikers, too. Bring your tackle because springtime’s ideal conditions bring in the big catches! Trout and bass gulp just about anything in their path after the long winter’s rest. Big Bear Lake thrives with rainbow trout making for great fishing for everyone from tykes to seasoned fishermen.

head into the woods for a romantic picnic under the forest canopy, or relive our historic Old West on a sunset horseback ride.

Autumn For a little adventure, try a little off-roading on a guided jeep tour to the spectacular and historic backcountry. Hear stories about the gold mining days and see how early Californians lived in the high country.

Summer Time to chill out and soak up Big Bear Lake’s endless summer fun where the 7-mile lake features classic to cutting-edge aquatic sports. From kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and parasailing to jet skiing and wakeboarding to lazy pontoon rides and supervised children’s swimming, water fun abounds. Thrill seekers soon discover that Big Bear’s unique New Zealand-style Jet Boat rivals any theme park’s roller coaster. For an even milder easy-breezy lake activity, come aboard the pirate ship or the paddlewheeler for a narrated tour of Big Bear’s history, Hollywood movie sets and celebrity homes. Or, catch a slow ride on the Scenic Sky Chair from the forest floor to the top of Snow Summit to treat your eyes to spectacular panoramic views. Hop back on the chair for the return ride, or hike down, or venture out to mountain bike the trails. If kicking back is your style, long summer days don’t include boredom in Big Bear Lake. Nearly every week, concerts, festivals, car shows and friendly outdoor competitions are held. But, if you’re pining for solitude,

7

As Big Bear’s summer colors transform into russet hues, the air sharpens to crisp nights and golden days. Amidst the vibrant evergreen trees are oaks, cottonwoods and aspens splashed in brilliant amber, yellow and pumpkin-colored leaves. Bring your camera to capture autumn’s blazing beauty. The lake continues as the main attraction with fishing and boating activities. Rent a pontoon or let a fishing guide handle the messy work while you focus on reeling in plump trout and bass. Harvest time in Big Bear means picking from a bounty of fall festivities. The annual Oktoberfest kicks up a lively mood with brew, brats, competitions and dancing fun for the entire family. At the Moonridge Animal Park, Big Bear’s own alpine zoo takes visitors on exclusive Flashlight Safari tours of the animals’ world in the dark. tep into our enchanted winter wonderland and awaken your childlike wonder from its own hibernation. Visitors and locals alike are transformed when the snow begins to fall. The Village resplendent in its winter white; the forest blanketed in fresh powder; the azure lake rimmed in snow – it’s magical here in Big Bear Lake. Skiers and snowboarders can catch big air and magnificent views while cruising Big Bear’s pristine network of groomed powder trails. From the first step onto the chairlift, time stands still as you get in as many runs as possible before the sun sets. There’s a world of frosty fun beyond the slopes, too! Pack a picnic lunch (think hearty sandwiches and hot chocolate) and trek on snowshoes or cross-country with family and friends on numbers of trails valley wide. With the snowy ground as your easel, be the first to make snow angels or build a snowman. You may even discover more than your own snowshoe prints as the forest abounds with deer, squirrels, foxes or raccoons, too. For over-the-top outdoor fun, take flight on a zipline high above the forest floor or race inner tubes

in snow play areas where you can bank on plenty of the white stuff. Your kids will fill the air with laughter and beg for more. Perhaps your idea of enjoying the great outdoors is from the warm indoors. Mosey over to a cozy Big Bear restaurant for a window table and a hot toddy while watching the scene outside that is reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting. Back in your cabin or condo, gather around a crackling fire and play games, read or snooze.

The ABCs of Snow Play with Kids

V I S I T O R S

G U I D E

SNOW FUN FOR KIDS

For kids, a visit to the snow is like stepping into the pages of a storybook. It’s a fairytale come true. And with Big Bear’s close proximity to nearby cities, there’s no reason not to declare a snow day and come up to play. Here are a few ideas to get you and your kids going. But follow your child’s lead for creative snow play.

Kids love being the first for just about anything! Let your kids be the first to make prints in freshly fallen snow. Make a snowman by scooping up the snow and shaping it into your children’s own creation – fun for little hands and big hands alike. Explore the magical winter forest with a Big Bear Discovery Center naturalist to learn fascinating forest facts. Snow-laden branches sprinkle flurries. Or is that fairy dust? It’s tube time! Not the boob tube, but inner tubing and sledding down snowy hills. Big Bear has two designated snow play areas. Build a fort; then start a playful snowball fight. Take cover in the fort! Dig the snow. Hand your kids buckets and shovels and let them build whatever their imagination desires. Learn to ski or ride. But leave the lessons to the pros at Big Bear Mountain Resorts. Instructors make learning fun for ages 4 and older. If your kids already ski, play “Follow the Leader” down the slopes. Stash healthy snacks in your pocket for quick energy lifts. And remember to always carry water. High altitude equals big thirst.

he combination of a cool alpine lake, surrounding lush forests and approximately 320 days of sunshine per year is a magnetic force that lures you to Big Bear spring, summer and fall. Once Old Man Winter packs it in, the sun warms up the mountains, days become longer and outdoor recreation blossoms! A walk or bike ride through the forest brings you face to face with colorful wildflowers and the intoxicating scent of nature’s woodsy fragrance. Chattering squirrels and chirping birds bring the forest to life. You might even catch a glimpse of a deer darting through the trees. If you plan to take a trip with your significant other swaying pine and oak trees provide a romantic canopy as you bask in conversation and share a private picnic for two. If you have children, introduce them to a real 3-D adventure they can grasp. The fresh mountain air will stimulate your kids’ senses as they scout out animal tracks along the trails. Imaginations run wild as shrubs and tree logs become forts, and rocks become gems worthy of stuffing in pockets.

The grand centerpiece of our mountain resort is of course the lake. Above the lake are skies that absolutely pop with the prettiest blues you’ll ever see! Whether you choose to play on the lake or just view it from atop an overlooking vista its magnificence will automatically draw you in.

G U I D E

The lake is stuffed to the gills with trout, bass and catfish. It’s easy to get hooked on the great fishing dawn to dusk. If adventure on the water is what you seek then you’re in for a treat. Just about every mainstream aquatic sport happens here from motorized boats to people powered kayaks and canoes. There are even some activities on the cutting edge like New Zealand style jet boat rides and the Cable Wakeboard Park. Along the 22-miles of shoreline, several marinas provide all the gear you need to navigate your way on water. There’s plenty of action in town too. Stop by for weekly and seasonal events and festivals like the Cowboy Gathering, Antique Auto Show, Big Bear Renaissance Faire and Art on the Lake. With so much to see and do, there are numerous reasons to visit each and every season. Consider it an open invitation to have your fun in the sun. Fishing © Dan McKernan

Gateway to Adventure and Discovery The Big Bear Discovery Center is an educational and informational portal to the San Bernardino National Forest and is located within the heart of the Big Bear Valley. The goal is to create awareness and become a more responsible caretaker of a national forest while increasing your enjoyment and knowledge of the great outdoors. Services include Adventure Passes; maps for hiking and biking and off-roading; camping information; and Forest Service permits. The Center offers naturalist-led interpretive tours such as snowshoe tours and bald eagle celebrations in the winter and Pacific Crest Trail and canoe tours in the summer.

Where Mountain Biking Was Meant to Happen!

Happy Trails Hiking trails are abundant in the San Bernardino National Forest, most notable the Pacific Crest Trail, which snakes through the north and east ends of Big Bear Valley. Most trailheads are easily accessible, and you’re treated to lush meadows, natural springs, andoutstanding panoramic views! As you delve deeper into the woods to explore you may find some boulders to climb, or a down tree that is great fun to walk across. Various evergreens from white firs to Jeffery pines and Ponderosas provide shade throughout. See trails map on page 19 to pick out your next hike in Big Bear. Spring through autumn, join other mountain bikers from around the globe to experience a sport created for the mountains! Big Bear is a worldclass mountain biking region with a network of more than one hundred miles of trails and Forest Service roads to satisfy all ages and skill levels. Snow Summit’s Scenic Sky Chair offers an easy way to access trailheads for cross-country mountain bike excursions. The Skyline Ridge (2N10) at the top of Summit takes bikers to favorite loops such as Grand View Loop and Plantation Trail. Also, be sure to catch the Pine Knot Trail (1E01) for a single-track thrill ride with twists and turns throughout. A popular ride ideal for beginners is Woodland Trail on the North Shore.

Some of the finest freshwater fishing in California can be found in Big Bear Lake. There is an abundance of trout, bass, catfish and blue gill to be caught. Big Bear Lake is also well known as a good trolling lake. You will need to have a fishing license, which can be purchased at sporting goods stores and marinas. You can rent a variety of boats, from pontoon, fishing, sail and speed boats to canoes, kayaks and paddle boats or take a lake tour and enjoy a day in the sun at any one of the many marinas that surround Big Bear Lake’s 22 miles of shoreline. Permits are required for private boats and can be purchased at any marina.

hat’s better than lounging on your cabin’s deck, soaking up rays, feeding your nose with pine-scented aromas, and listening to the natural music of chirping birds? Not much. What’s better than being in your slippers and bathrobe, with a cup of hot java, curled up next to a crackling fire, reading the latest best-seller? Not much. What’s better than sitting in a steamy outdoor Jacuzzi cascading with bubbles, a glass of pinot noir in your hand and snowflakes gently falling on your head? Not much. When it comes to rest and relaxation in Big Bear Lake, there’s really not much to it. In today’s hectic world the best thing you can do is take a time out and just chill. The mountains are 180 degrees opposite to the city. This is a world of serenity, solitude and tranquility. Maybe you want to dip your toes in the lake, feed the ducks and watch the sailboats drift by. Maybe you want to take a boat onto the lake and go with the flow. Maybe an afternoon nap on the porch looking at the trees and clear skies is what you need. Make it simple and let the warmth of the sun and coolness of the freshwater lake blend together to soothe your mind and soul.

Four Seasons to Unwind It doesn’t matter what time of year you visit Big Bear Lake because nature is always here to comfort you. In the spring brightly colored flowers blossom, the lake sparkles like an engagement ring, birds whistle beautiful songs, and sunsets glow. Summertime is like a Zen master that will teach you how to appreciate the finer things in life. Come autumn, you’ll find bliss being surrounded by fluttering golden and auburn leaves. Daytime temps are mild to moderately perfect for an afternoon walk in the woods, and at night there’s nothing like snuggling under a down comforter with your favorite warm beverage. In winter it’s a given that wood-burning fireplaces are the heart of cabins and lodges. Just peek outside, and you’ll see smoky chimneys up and down the street.

Big Bear Sets the Stage The natural alpine scenery that surrounds Big Bear Lake, from lakeside to the mountaintops creates stunning backdrops for events, which explains why so many events are held each year at this mountain resort. Each weekend you can count on something happening in Big Bear Valley, whether it’s the call of brass horns, the cadence of thumping drums, the electric twang of a steel guitar or harmonious voices of a theatrical chorus line. It might be lively characters in 16th century costumes causing a mighty stir, or it could be a troupe of tiny tots dressed in lederhosen and dirndls prancing around to polka music, or perhaps it’s a cowboy posse gathered around a campfire telling original stories keeping the audience spellbound. One thing for certain is the folks of Big Bear know how to entertain.

Let’s Get This Party Started! Just what kind of mood are you in? What ever it is you better be ready for some good times, because once the sun goes down the fun continues in Big Bear Lake. Maybe you’re in the mood to just lounge around at Big Bear Mountain Brewery with a group of friends to sip a brew, and laugh at all the funny things that happened on the slopes. Or maybe you feel like getting down and showing off your latest dance moves at B’s Backyard Bar-B-Que’s Boathouse. How about a game of shuffleboard, ping-pong or darts at Nottingham’s upstairs pub? You might want to catch the big game on the big screen at Desi’s in the Village. Tiffany’s Lounge at the Best Western Big Bear Chateau provides live music on weekends. There’s always a party at The Bowling Barn, which offers glow bowling every night, a full-service bar, arcade and billiards. For the youngsters there’s plenty to do at the new Funplex such as lazer tag, video games and a mini rollercoaster. Whatever mood you’re in after the sun goes down, the good folks of Big Bear are certain you’ll have a good time!

How Big Bear Lake

GOT ITS NAME.

I

f someone told you they had just spent a fun-filled weekend at a popular Southern California resort called Yuhaviat, you probably wouldn’t know what they were talking about. Yuhaviat is a Serrano Indian word that means “Pine Place,” Big Bear Valley’s name for more than a thousand years. In 1845, Benjamin Davis Wilson rode into Yuhaviat Valley with a posse of 20 men. They were chasing Indians who had been raiding their ranches in Riverside. As they entered the valley, they found it swarming with grizzlies. That’s not a misprint, indeed they were grizzly bears! Wilson divided his men into two-man teams. Each team went out, roped a bear and brought it back to camp. They had eleven bears at the camp at the same time. This prompted Wilson to come up with the name Big Bear Lake. However, it should be noted that Big Bear Lake is a man-made lake that didn’t exist in 1845. The lake Wilson named Big Bear was actually the natural lake at the east end of the valley, now known as Baldwin Lake.

Quite a “Rich” History Big Bear Lake was once a gold mining mecca before it became a popular four-season resort. In 1860, a bear hunter named William Holcomb discovered gold in the backcountry after tracking a bear’s blood trail to a creek filled with flakes of gold. He tried to keep it a secret, but soon, word spread, and Southern California’s largest gold rush was on! From 1860 to about 1875 the area was swarming with prospectors. Today, only a few relics and structures from the Gold Rush days remain. Big Bear Off-Road Adventures offers gold mining tours all year round. Big Bear Discovery Center offers tours in the summer and provides a self guided brochure for folks who want to venture out on their own. Visitors will see actual remnants of the gold mines and learn about several sites of interest, such as Metzger Mine, Lucky Baldwin Mine, Two Gun Bill’s Saloon, Hangman’s Tree and Wilbur’s Grave.

More Historic Facts Big Bear’s first dam, completed in 1884, was soon followed by the Valley’s first hotel in 1888. In 1949 the first ski resort opened, and Big Bear Lake soon became Southern California’s favorite mountain getaway.
