WHERE TIME STANDS STILL, YET THE FUN NEVER STOPS
In the winter Big Bear offers a variety of choices for every activity level. Get a lift up to the summit and hit the slopes on a snowboard or skis while you enjoy the panoramic vistas. Kids will love tobogganing or tubing down the slopes. Later, take a stroll through the naturally flocked forest. Spend quiet moments lounging in a hot tub after an active day. Perhaps curling up next to a warm fire with a good book and a hot beverage is more enticing. Whatever the preference, you’ll enjoy the snowcapped peaks and discovering just what this resort has to offer. The spring is a great time to visit one of the richest woodland regions in Southern California. The clear skies and crisp air will reinvigorate even the most exhausted. Glimpse nature as it awakens after a long winter during bird watching, horseback riding, or wildflower walks. It is also the perfect time to enjoy the climb on a mountain trail or to pedal a bike around the lake. Don’t forget to indulge in spa services or to browse through the quaint bookstores and shops. Get outdoors and leave the heat and smog behind! Spend time on the golf course or drop by one of the many marinas and schedule a day out on the lake on a boat, or in a canoe or kayak. Big Bear Lake is popular for fishing but don’t forget about the hiking, biking, and camping. Roast a few marshmallows at a camp fire, explore the night sky, and participate in the many unique programs offered by local naturalists and other experts. The brisk air and colorful leaves highlight the change of season and excitement fills the air during the fall festivities. Plan a picnic under the fall foliage and take in the spectacular hues of crimson, pumpkin, and amber. Venture over to Oktoberfest and join the party as you learn the Chicken Dance, take a flashlight safari at the zoo, or mingle with creative types at the Big Bear International Film Festival. THE BIGGEST FAMILY ROOM ON THE PLANET
Watch your kids’ eyes grow wide with excitement as you share once-in-a-lifetime experiences as they learn to fish, canoe, pan for gold, or embark on other new adventures. Imagine the thrills of strolling through the forest for first time encounters with birds, rabbits, and deer. A squirrel might even knock on your cabin window to ask for a peanut! Kids get giddy in the mountains where they have the freedom to explore and to saturate their senses with the natural world. Enjoy the laughter as the kids become adept at new skills and develop more confidence when they discover unknown talents. Later, you’ll have the time to snuggle up next to a cozy fire for a bedtime story before everyone falls into a deep, dreamy sleep. The next morning the bird songs will wake you so you can add another chapter to this family adventure. Whatever you seek, Big Bear offers something for all ages, all interests, and all activity levels.

A CHILD’S PARADISE
Once here, forget long drives because everything you need is just a short distance away. Give your kid a once in a lifetime experience in the snow! Build a snow sculpture, create snow angels, or why not instigate a snowball fight? Play outside during a snowfall and hold a contest to see who can catch a snowflake on their tongue first. Shed excess energy through snow play by tobogganing or riding a tube down a slope. For those more adventurous types, take snowboarding or skiing lessons and learn a new sport. Nature lovers can stroll down the pier next to the Stanfield Marsh Waterfowl Preserve and bird watch. Drop by the Big Bear Zoo for close encounters of the wild kind or head out to the Baldwin Lake Petting Zoo to tame things down. Visit the Kite Factory and then go fly a kite! Now is the perfect time to roast marshmallows and show the kids how to make s’mores. Popcorn also seems to taste much better when popped on an open flame. Play miniature golf, go bowling, ride go-karts, or get wet on a water slide. Canoe, kayak or reach new heights through parasailing out over the lake. Learn how to bait a hook and fish with a charter fishing guide or pick a spot along the 22 miles of shoreline. Climb aboard a tour boat for a pirate crusade or a Huck Finn type of adventure on a paddlewheel boat. Landlubbers can hop on a horse or a pony for a ride through pristine forest and terrain.

Bring the kids up to watch the leaves change. Hire an off-road guide for backcountry adventures. Avoid cabin fever with charades and cards, or add old-fashioned fun through board games and vintage toys. It is the perfect time to watch a meteor shower, or to view the stars up close with local astronomers. Kids will love sharing spooky stories late into the night. Don’t miss the popular Halloween in Big Bear Village in October! BIGBEAR.COM

WINTER
LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW!
The 435 skiable acres in Big Bear make it the perfect location for snow sports but this winter wonderland offers many other opportunities. For instance, there is nothing like the enchanted woods after a fresh snowfall when it is the perfect time to snowshoe into adventure.

THE PERFECT ATMOSPHERE FOR ROMANCE
Whether you are searching for a setting that is rustic or elegant, you’ll find it here. Create the perfect romantic escape or get hitched in a local chapel. Begin the day with breakfast in bed followed by an enjoyable ride in a horse drawn carriage. Afterwards, get a relaxing massage at one of the local spas. What next? The choice is yours, but when is the last time you cuddled up together during a picturesque lakeside picnic? Be sure to end the day with a sunset cruise. Time slows down in the mountains so the days are long and leisurely. Attend an evening concert under the stars or relish a private night entwined in each others arms. Just let the magic sweep you away and know that the magnetism of Big Bear’s alpine setting will entice you back to commemorate a higher love.

HISTORIC BIG BEAR
BREATHING LIFE INTO HISTORY
Serranao Indians were the first occupants of Big Bear Valley approximately 3,000 years ago. The Name “Serrano” is Spanish for mountaineer. The Indians called themselves “Yuharetum,” or “people of the pines.” The Serrano were a very strong and self-sufficient people and acclimated well to life at a high altitude. They lived off the land by combining hunting and foraging. In 1845, while in pursuit of Indians, Benjamin D. Wilson discovered and named Bear Valley because as he said, “The place was alive with grizzly bears!” In 1860 William Holcomb was hunting bear and discovered gold instead. What followed was Southern California’s largest gold rush. Big Bear’s first dam, completed in 1884, was soon followed by the Valley’s first hotel in 1888. In 1949 the first ski resort opened and Big Bear Lake soon became Southern California’s favorite mountain getaway. STILL IN PRODUCTION
Once a popular escape for stars and other Los Angeles entertainment notables, today this area remains industry-friendly and attracts television and film crews on a regular basis.
Cal-Pine Chalets
Truly a favorite filming location, it took two books, Mountain Movies (1911-1939) and More Mountain Movies (1940-2004) to cover Big Bear’s extensive motion picture history. What makes it a perfect spot? The area offers untouched wilderness areas, alpine lakes, clear skies, four seasons, and everything from rustic cabins to elegant lakefront homes. Big Bear also provides a one-stop permit process, comprehensive location library, local production facility, twenty-two miles of shoreline, and filmfriendly locals. Need a filming location that is close and convenient? This unique setting is two hours away from Los Angeles and offers over 300 days of clear skies. Finally, make sure you don’t miss the Big Bear International Film Festival each September when filmmakers arrive from around the world to showcase their films and provide a weekend of fabulous viewing for movie buffs.

OUR BEST-KEPT SECRET
Some of the best deals are available in Big Bear midweek. For example, an affordable alternative for your winter getaway begins with Midweek Lift and Lodging Packages starting as low as $69 per person, per night, with double occupancy. Enjoy the entire day on the slopes at Snow Summit and Bear Mountain, and relax all night in the comforts of your very own cozy cabin or lodge. The next day wake up and attack the slopes again! You’ll have wide open slopes all to yourself, a more relaxed atmosphere and of course you’ll save money and time.
While most people think of vacationing in the mountains during the winter and summer, the spring and fall are fabulous times to visit and take advantage of great bargains. Best of all you’ll still benefit from the best the resort has to offer! In spring, you can live the ultimate Southern California dream by skiing in shorts and a tank top. In fall, you’ll get luscious warm days capped by chilly nights. So, what are you waiting for? Take a break, hop in the car for an escape to Big Bear midweek or come up in springtime or autumn for the best bargains.

BIG BEAR’S WILD SIDE
Whether you decide to join a naturalist or to explore on your own, the scenery in Big Bear is refreshing. The clear skies will not only brighten the day but also provide spectacular views and stunning sunsets. Why not take a few moments and lie back and let the white puffy clouds reveal hidden pictures on the backdrop of a celestial canvas? Trail hikes reveal concealed meadows and dazzling sights. Squirrels, bunnies, and birds encountered on the way will delight children and adults alike. Take an amble lakeside and wander down to the water’s edge to skip rocks or watch the fish glide lazily past. Remember, if you need a quick getaway, short retreat, or a long break, Big Bear is the perfect escape.
