2.5 miles, very easy An asphalt path that wanders along the north shore of Big Bear Lake. Easily accessible for hikers, bikers, skaters, joggers, strollers and wheelchairs. It starts at Stanfield Cutoff and ends at the Solar Observatory. 1.5 mile loop, easy A unique nature trail with 20 posted stops. Pick up a pamphlet at the entrance and take the selfguided tour where you will learn about botany, geology and the wildlife of this woodland area. You can leave your car in the parking lot if it exhibits an Adventure Pass. .6 mile round-trip, easy The Lodgepole Pine Trail is on the south side of the lake and is a gentle walk down a path along a stream, ending up at the Champion Lodgepole Pine, one of the largest known lodgepoles in the world. Begin by driving up Mill Creek Road (Forest Road 2N10-dirt road) for 4.5 miles, turn right on 2N11 and continue one mile to the trailhead.

2.4 miles round-trip, moderate Castle Rock Trail is one of Big Bear’s most popular trails. The trail begins one mile east of Big Bear Dam on Hwy. 18. On the south side of Hwy. 18 is a small brown sign that marks the trailhead. Park at the turnout along Hwy. 18. The elevation gain is 500’, making it a steep climb for the first .5 miles. The well-marked trail levels out for another .7 miles. At the top is an impressive granite rock outcropping providing 360º panoramic views.

SNOW SUMMIT / GRAND VIEW LOOP BIKE TRAIL

4-5.5 miles, moderate to difficult Starts .6 miles west of the Discovery Center on Hwy. 38. You will need an Adventure Pass to park in the trailhead parking area. On the trail you will walk through a wide variety of natural environments. The first mile is a gentle uphill climb, but after a mile or so you will realize you are gaining altitude. The Cougar Crest Trail ends at the junction of the world-famous 2,600-mile long Pacific Crest Trail. 9 miles, low intermediate A very popular novice ride that starts by taking the Snow Summit Scenic Sky Chair. This ride has a 3-mile roller coaster ride to Grandview Point Junction. There you have the option to ride 2.5 miles to Grandview Point, where the view is beautiful and well worth the extra time.

GROUT BAY BIKE TRAIL

13 miles, intermediate This trail starts with a short paved climb from the Fawnskin fire station up to 3N14. Continue 2.5 miles to Hanna Flat campground. From there, Grout Bay Trail starts at the back of the campsite and starts climbing. The trail climbs and descends, ending your ride back in Fawnskin.

PINE KNOT TRAIL

6 miles round-trip, moderate Hikers begin at the base of Aspen Glen Picnic Area, just south of Mill Creek Road. The trail meanders through stands of white fir and Jeffery pine. The trail leads to Grand View Point, altitude 7,784’. Avid hikers make the round trip hike in three hours or less. Mountain bikers take the Scenic Sky Chair to 2N10 west to 1E01 for a thrilling single track experience.

14.9 miles, advanced to expert You’ll need stamina and basic navigation skills for this loop. Start at Van Dusen Canyon Rd. (3N09) and ride up 3.5 miles to Holcomb Valley to 3N16 turn left, to 3N07 turn right, to 3N43 turn left to “The John Bull Trail” (3N10). It’s about 3 miles of technical riding before you come to 3N32; turn right to 3N16; take another right at 3N09, which will lead you back to your starting point.

The Annual Big Bear Lake Rotary Club Fourth of July lakefront fireworks and barbecue takes place at the Marina Resort. Big Bear Lake’s “Fireworks Spectacular” will explode at 7,000’ reflecting its shower of brilliance over Big Bear Lake on Friday, July 4th. Come attend the biggest 4th of July fireworks display in Southern California. The fireworks are shot off from a barge on the lake directly off of Pine Knot Landing. Fireworks begin between 8:45 p.m.-9:15 p.m. Viewable from any of our public parks or from a boat on the lake. Make sure to bring a jacket or blanket.

Spectator Entry

In earlier days gone by, two-person teams would race a burro from Pioneertown to the trails of Holcomb Valley during Old Miners Days. Now, teams of two will race a single bike in a 10-mile loop beginning and ending in Fawnskin. The bike must be swapped at least twice and both riders must reach the finish-line together.

The Doo Dah Parade in Fawnskin, in conjunction with the 65th annual Old Miners Days celebration of Big Bear, one of Big Bear’s wackiest traditions. Although famous as the World’s Shortest Parade, it sure isn’t short on fun.

Old Miners Association presents the Big Bear Regional Chili Cookoff located in the Village. Sanctioned by International Chili Society, cooks come from far and wide to compete for a spot in ICS World Championships. A great blend of bluegrass, country, and folk-rock music will fill the air while children are entertained with gold panning, potato sack races, old-tyme carnival games, a climbing wall and more. Locals compete that afternoon in the 4th Annual Outhouse Race. An event you won’t want to miss. Evening entertainment includes a bluegrass concert and Whiskey Dave’s Wild West Showdown with the Oak Glen gunslingers. Event entry is free, Chili tasting kits $5.

The Big Bear MTB Gran Fondo joins the ranks of premier Southern California endurance mountain bike events with rides for all levels. Riders will be able to challenge their personal abilities with distances of 100/70/30/20k. The 20k allows intermediate riders to take the Snow Summit Sky Chair to the ridgeline to begin their ride. Other rides begin in the Village and may include 3,500 to as much as 10,000 feet of climbing.

Big Bear Renaissance Faire is an authentic re-creation of an English Summer Faire set during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Visit an exciting, vibrant village faire with six live entertainment stages, and a Mystic Forest with Fairy Garden where fairies fly high in the trees! Big Bear Valley celebrates the National Day of the Cowboy with the 3rd Annual Spirits of the West Brewsfest. The 33rd Annual Jim Hall Memorial May Trout Classic is the longest running fishing tournament in Big Bear Lake, and has become a family tradition with multiple generations participating in the annual event. The May Trout Classic is known as ‘The Granddaddy of Them All’ because the lake is stocked with enormous trophy-sized trout. The top nine largest trout caught split the prize money. To keep this family tradition alive, all participants under 16 years of age with a paid adult get free entry into the tournament and are eligible for prizes.
