Inspiring the Future “Everywhere I go, I continuously hear how much BIGHORN Members give of their time, talents, and donations to Coachella Valley non-profits,” shares BIGHORN Chairman R.D. Hubbard. “And when it comes to BIGHORN Golf Club Charities, I am in awe of what we have produced in such a short amount of time and of how generous our BIGHORN Members continue to be. I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of our giving community!” In November, BIGHORN Golf Club Charities will be awarded Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation for its collaborative efforts in producing BIGHORN Cares, BIGHORN Behind a Miracle (BAM), and its Scholarship and Toy Drive programs. This honor is given annually by the Association of Fundraising Professionals to a foundation that has continuously demonstrated outstanding civic and charitable responsibility, made a significant impact on the quality of life in the community, and motivated others to take leadership roles in philanthropy and community involvement.
the most significant projects and are poised to benefit the most underserved people and make an unmistakable difference in local lives.” BIGHORN Cares Grants serve a broad range of people and programs – including educational outreach, afterschool services, maternity aid, disability assistance, shelter relief, foster care, health screenings, and military programs. Every eligible non-profit was researched thoroughly with due diligence, site visits, and interviews.

“We are truly humbled by this prestigious honor,” says Ed Burger, BIGHORN Golf Club Charities President. “We gather our resources to help the most underserved citizens, critically ill patients, and promising students for a better tomorrow.” BIGHORN is a uniquely philanthropic private Club with three high visibility charitable programs: • BIGHORN Cares has supported 85 non-profits with nearly $900,000 in grants to fund new programs and services that benefit their missions and will help the most amount of the Valley’s at-risk citizens. • BIGHORN Golf Club Charities has gifted 509 community college, 4-year university, and graduate scholarships. • BIGHORN BAM has raised $6.5 million over nine years for breast cancer services at Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center and for The Pendleton Foundation.
Founder of BIGHORN BAM Selby Dunham, Founder of BIGHORN Cares Joe Kirby, Charities Manager Danielle Ortega, BIGHORN Chairman R.D. Hubbard and BIGHORN Golf Club Charities President Ed Burger.
Since its inception in 2006, BIGHORN Golf Club Charities has gifted over $8 million in local funding to support wellness programs, education, the arts, and building the BIGHORN Golf Club Charities Veterans Resource Center at the College of the Desert for the 400 veterans attending the institution. BIGHORN Golf Club Charities is the parent foundation for both BIGHORN BAM and BIGHORN Cares, which have both significantly impacted the desert. BIGHORN Cares The annual BIGHORN Cares Awards Dinner is a celebration of the great work these non-profits do and of the new programs that will change clients’ lives. At the recent event, grant recipients introduced themselves, shared their missions, and quickly began collaborating on future partnerships. By the time the check presentations began, everyone was enthusiastically cheering for each other’s success. The evening ended in a standing ovation for the works of both the non-profits and BIGHORN Cares. “Nearly 100 Valley non-profits applied for BIGHORN Cares Grants last year, all with impressive programs and services that enrich the community,” shares Danielle Ortega, BIGHORN Charities Manager. “We feel that our 47 new recipients provide
“We are pleased we can help so many of our Coachella Valley neighbors with this program,” shares BIGHORN Cares Founder Joe Kirby. “BIGHORN Members want to support local organizations that will create a brighter future for individuals and families.” “BIGHORN Cares Grants offer an incredible opportunity for nonprofits needing to create extremely vital programs for the people that they serve,” offers Ed Burger, BIGHORN Golf Club Charities President. “Grant recipients are energized about their future!” BIGHORN Members generously combine their funds with 100% of their contributions going directly to support local charities that are instrumental in bettering the lives of those they serve. “We honor their efforts and support them wholeheartedly!” adds Kirby.
BIGHORN Cares has gifted Boys & Girls Club of the Coachella Valley with over $90,000 to their Desert Hot Springs, Indio, La Quinta, Mecca, and Cathedral City communities giving the kids safer, air-conditioned gyms and much improved facilities where they can grow and thrive.
The kids from Boys and Girls Club of Cathedral City thank BIGHORN Members for their generous support in 2014 in fixing their gym and playrooms which were in serious need of repair and air-conditioning.
BIGHORN Cares supports valley non-profits like Baseball Buddies, which gives disabled kids the opportunity to play sports, each with their own buddy to help. “Going to a game is like breathing fresh air,” says Danielle Ortega, Charities Manager. “Everyone cheers and helps each other. And the pitches continue until the player hits the ball.” 8

The new state-of-the-art TrueBeamTM STx System 2.0 will help thousands of cancer patients at Eisenhower.
“I was 24 years old when I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” shares Brittney Pos. “Within a week, my OBGYN had sent me through an ultrasound, mammogram, MRI, and biopsy. And on September 17, 2015, the news hit me like a ton of bricks. I was too young! Within three weeks, I was scheduled for a double mastectomy. Going to school, now not able to work, I was concerned with how we were going to make it. Through BIGHORN BAM and The Pendleton Foundation paying my rent, I was able to concentrate on getting better and stay focused on my studies. Cancer is so stressful all by itself, but to figure out how to juggle it all – I am really fortunate I had angels looking out for me.”
Gina Garside from The Pendleton Foundation with daughter and 24-year-old breast cancer survivor Brittney Pos. Brittney just graduated top of her class at Loma Linda University and has successfully passed her dental hygiene boards all while undergoing breast cancer treatment. Congratulations Brittney! You are a survivor!
BIGHORN BAM (Behind a Miracle) – 10 Years of Miracles Now entering its 10th anniversary, BIGHORN Behind A Miracle (BAM) was created by a group of women who supported BIGHORN Member Selby Dunham and her fight as a breast cancer survivor. A survivor from day one, she is an 11-year survivor. At their initial meeting, the team decided they wanted to make a significant impact on the desert by supporting Eisenhower Medical Center. “BIGHORN BAM has been a miracle since its beginnings,” shares Selby, addressing a crowd of supporters. “Every single one of you are miracles! Our words are heartfelt and hardly seem adequate to describe our GRATITUDE to all of you for your overwhelming big-heartedness, compassion, love, and support for those fighting cancer in the Coachella Valley. We are the only Club in the world that consistently supports local non-profits by building up Eisenhower to take care of 30,000 patients seen annually at the Eisenhower Schnitzer/Novack Breast Center. Because of your generosity, lives will be saved; because you care, cancer survivors will live longer; and because of your compassion, cancer patients that need support will have it!”
In the past nine years, BAM’s donations have helped transform the Breast Center into one of the premier breast cancer centers in the country. Diagnostic equipment, genetic counseling, and their extensive support programs are far superior to most university-based breast centers. “Thanks to all of you, we have the very best technology right here in our own backyard!” says Selby. Hundreds of patients are able to focus on healing rather than how they are going to pay for food, gas, or rent through our donations to The Pendleton Foundation. An exciting $6.5 million has been raised and has stayed locally helping patients in the Valley.” A Quantum Leap in Cancer Care When Eisenhower Medical Center approached Selby to consider focusing BIGHORN BAM’s donation towards a new TrueBeam STx Linear Accelerator for radiosurgery, she immediately understood the significance of how the TrueBeam would most help cancer patients. Breaking the boundaries of today’s treatment technologies, this system is designed to target and treat cancer with pinpoint accuracy. (Continue article on page 14.)
New this fall, BIGHORN BAM vans will be on the road transporting chemotherapy and radiation patients to and from treatment. Today, 9,000 rides have been given through BAM’s generous donations.

According to the American Cancer Society, in our lifetime, there is a 43.95% chance of being diagnosed with cancer if you are male; 37.35% chance if you are female. Radiation therapy can be one of the safest and most effective treatments for many types of cancers. “The TrueBeam STx Linear Accelerator is extremely exciting, giving new solutions that are faster, featuring more powerful precision, and advancing the option for new treatment methods,” says BIGHORN BAM Founder Selby Dunham. The advanced TrueBeam STx Linear Accelerator is highly intelligent. It choreographs, in real time, an asynchronous network for treatments that require fast, flexible timing capabilities. It seamlessly integrates respiratory gating, imaging, and treatment techniques. The precision of the TrueBeam system is measured in increments of less than a millimeter, with mechanical and dose accuracy coming together at a true isocenter. With dose rates that are 40-140% higher than current standards, doctors can treat more patients faster. With an abundance of robust tools, this radical system encourages new levels of clinical confidence. “Building on a 10-year history of providing Eisenhower with cutting-edge breast cancer technology, BIGHORN BAM has joined their donation with other donors in support of the TrueBeam STx Linear Accelerator, the most advanced technological equipment available,” praises Laura Fritz, Vice President, Eisenhower Medical Center Foundation. “The computer-guided, high-definition equipment provides high-dose radiation capable of treating smaller cancers with increased precision. The TrueBeam advances the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer will have a long-term impact on the quality of patient care.“ “BIGHORN BAM’s latest generous gift propels cancer care at Eisenhower to a higher level of excellence. The TrueBeam STx Linear Accelerator brings the most sophisticated radiation therapy treatments, including radiosurgery, to Eisenhower. This innovative technology has opened the door to new treatment options for brain, lung, liver, pancreas, breast and spine cancers. The TrueBeam allows clinicians to ‘see’ the tumor they are about to treat and apply very accurate and precise beams of radiation to it, while compensating for the patient’s movement. Most treatments last only a few minutes. In some cases, daily treatments are replaced by single treatments, allowing patients and their families to experience minimal disruption to their daily lives.“ Funds will also support a year of round-trip transportation services for patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatments who would normally rely on public transportation.“We are thrilled to give to these dynamic organizations,” says Selby. “They make miracles happen everyday!” For more information, please visit www.bighornbam.net. 14
Supporting the CHP 11-99 Foundation BIGHORN Members are vested in supporting charities that touch their hearts. In February, R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard along with Member Sean McGrath held a fundraiser for the California Highway Patrol 11-99 Foundation. 11-99 is the radio code for “officer needs assistance.” This code and its foundation provides emergency assistance to CHP employees and their families in times of crisis. Since 1984, the foundation has distributed more than $28 million in assistance to current, retired, and fallen-in-the-line-of-duty CHP employees, including an additional $21 million in college scholarships to children of CHP employees. “We are proud to support these brave men and women who risk their lives every day,” praises Hubbard.
CHP 11-99 Foundation CEO Steve Harrington, BIGHORN Member Sean McGrath, Chairman R.D. Hubbard and his wife Joan Dale with Captain Laura Quattlebaum.
Blue Angels Foundation BIGHORN Members have proudly donated over $1 million to the Blue Angels Foundation in support of all wounded veterans at the Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego. BIGHORN also supports Freedom Station, a housing facility for the wounded veterans to assist them in learning a vocation after their service. BIGHORN and the Blue Angels Foundation are committed to ongoing research of PTSD in hopes of finding a cure for our veterans who suffer with this injury. One hundred percent of the donations are distributed to the veterans. American Red Cross In August, BIGHORN Golf Club Charities gave $25,000 to aid The American Red Cross in helping the Blue Cut Fire victims in San Bernardino. Over 92,000 families were displaced and resources were running short to help these people. Mr. Hubbard saw the importance of assisting these families and committed right away. For more information about any of these programs, please call Danielle Ortega at 760-610-8222.
Renowned Visionary BIGHORN Golf Club Chairman R.D. Hubbard released his autobiography, “All You Can Worry About Is Tomorrow,” in November, receiving tremendous accolades. Several professors have even added it as assigned reading. Hubbard, the last of eight children in a family of modest means, grew to become a successful entrepreneur who was not content to make his mark in just a single industry. Beginning as a young CEO of Safelite Glass, he led a series of lucrative takeovers and turnarounds involving the founding of glass manufacturer AFG Industries, which Hubbard sold in 1992. In 1988, Hubbard bought his first of many racetracks, Ruidoso Downs Race Track in New Mexico. He also served as the CEO of Hollywood Park Inc. in the 1990s, overseeing the company’s expansion into casinos. He considers BIGHORN among his crowning achievements, with its reputation for continued innovation and for being one of the most unique and inventive private clubs in the country. Throughout the book, Hubbard shares milestones of his own experience that will support and encourage entrepreneurs in many capacities, from sizing up competitors and discovering how to motivate specialized talent, to earning trust from financial decision makers and staying focused on tomorrow. “I wanted to share some of my most inspirational stories with the quality businesspeople of today,” shares Hubbard. “I take pride in surrounding myself with top professionals who continue to drive our success.” The book opens with a foreword by the late famed Hollywood producer Jerry Weintraub, who was a close friend of Hubbard. Goldie Hawn, actress, producer, and director, as well as Founder and Board Chair of The Hawn Foundation & MindUP, has this to say about the biography: “R.D. Hubbard’s journey is the embodiment of the American Dream. Born of humble means to great success, Hubbard all the while tirelessly gives back to the less fortunate to help them reach their dreams.” Net proceeds from the sale of this book are being donated to the scholarship programs of BIGHORN Golf Club Charities, benefiting employees and their families. Copies are available through www.bn.com and on www.amazon.com. 18
All Good Things

Michelle and Richard Laver have been blessed with four beautiful children: Logan, age 24; Hunter, age 22; Taylor, age 20; and Katie, age 10, who was born with cerebal palsy. All of them are incredibly genuine and family-oriented. In fact, their two sons have been actively working with the family company, Kate Farms, inspired by daughter Katie. “The three older kids are so close to Katie that they love her like an angel sent from heaven,” beams Michelle. “The kids take her swimming, get her dressed up, and
play Justin Bieber music – all just to make her smile.” And smile she does because she knows that she is well loved. Though she can’t walk on her own, she is extremely smart and very aware of those around her. Most of all, in her own way, Katie provides an incredibly positive energy that radiates throughout the family. This energy is precisely what keeps them connected and focused on their destiny of helping others through the product they created to improve Katie’s quality of life.

Good Food Gourmet’s Caterina Borg has praised, “Not only is this product great for people on the go, and those who are both fitness- and calorieminded, but it has also found a very important place with many others who require reliable nutrition while undergoing treatment for serious illnesses such as cancer.” Mother Denise and her daughter Jennifer Capriati, Olympic gold medalist and former No. 1 tennis player in the world share, “Kate Farms Komplete is heaven-sent for me! This meal replacement not only satisfies my appetite, but also gives me all the protein and superfoods my body needs. Thank you Kate Farms for this extraordinary product that provides a very healthy, happy mind, body, and soul!”
The Beginnings of Kate Farms Katie had a seizure upon birth and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy that permanently affects her body movement and muscle coordination. At age four, doctors told Michelle and Richard that Katie was failing to “thrive.” Faced with feeding tubes, hospitals, and numerous pharmaceutical drugs, Katie’s parents searched for a better nutritional formula. “We tried over 30 different products,” shares Michelle. “The meal replacements on the market were full of sugar and dairy to increase calorie intake, but with Katie’s sensitive system they all resulted in many complications including bottle rot, sleep apnea, and severe digestive problems. It was as if we were feeding her four fast-food meals a day.” Her illness escalated into 10 hospital visits a year and many sleepless nights for the couple. Armed with a passion for helping their daughter live life to the fullest, the Lavers asked a dear friend and vegan chef to help collaborate with them to create a new meal replacement shake. With blender at the ready, they researched all the possible “superfoods” (like açaí, mangosteen, black currants, raspberries, and green tea extract), plant-based proteins, and powerful antioxidants. They tested and tested and tested, filled with an unwavering faith and a dedication to find new answers. The team honed in on all-natural vegan ingredients, real chocolate, and vanilla. At long last, after their 80th batch, they created the world’s first dairy-free, gluten-free, and soy-free ready-to-drink meal replacement shake. Within weeks of drinking what is now known as Kate Farms Komplete, Katie’s condition improved 22
significantly. She no longer needed breathing treatments for sleep apnea, her digestion problems were a thing of the past, and her mouth was once again healthy. Their formula worked. Katie has not been to the hospital since! Not only that, the Lavers took samples of the triumphant 80th batch to Natural Foods Expo East 2013, along with their beautiful Katie. Before the show even opened, they were named one of the Top Picks and won a NEXTY Award, presented to companies that represent the future of our healthy living landscape. An hour into the show, they received an impressive order from Sprouts, which boasts 3,000 nationwide stores. “We put our distribution plan in motion and worked very quickly to send out a quality, focused product that is now in 7,000 stores,” Richard says. Less than two years later, “Kate Farms is a healthy, inspirational brand where nutrition and happiness are one…We believe nutrition is the cornerstone of a good life, and Kate Farms is dedicated to this purpose. These are some of the virtues that Kate has taught us to live by.” “I have been an entrepreneur all my life,” Richard adds, “but it took our daughter’s health to help us invest 100 percent of ourselves in the project and follow our passion.” The results have been tremendous! “NFL teams like the Seattle Seahawks order every week, and we had 30 cases at the Superbowl for the teams,” beams Michelle. While the product was not originally developed for athletes, its recipe has turned out to be beneficial for a variety of dietary and healthful intentions.
Many people build businesses by developing systematic ways to solve a problem shared by many others. That’s exactly what Richard and Michelle did. After assembling their resources and creating a distribution plan, they worked step-by-step to grow their business. Throughout it all, they’ve kept an image of Katie front and center – in the company’s name, on their website, and in their minds and hearts. Their tagline “All Good Things” is their focus for delivering a quality product and promoting a way to extract the very best out of life. Kate Farms has grown into a company that serves a broad range of individuals – from athletes, moms and dads on the go, and children to seniors and people who are living with food sensitivities or digestive conditions. Most especially, the company improves the livelihood of its namesake, Kate Laver – who enjoys five shakes a day. “She’s living her best life,” attest the Lavers, and Katie’s winning smile certainly proves it! Living With Tennis Legends Richard’s father, Ian, and his cousin, Rod, were iconic tennis legends, who owed the origins of their fame to Richard’s grandfather, Len. Len owned a sporting goods store in the outback of Australia and built a tennis court for his boys so they could learn the game of tennis. Ian grew up to be a professional tennis player and businessman, establishing Laver’s International Tennis Resort in Palm Beach, Florida (a revolutionary 1,000-condominium community that featured 65 tennis courts). He also created several prominent tennis tournaments including the Lipton 23

championship match. “I called a ball ‘out’ that was on the line. My father had never, ever seen me do that, and, to be frank, I had never cheated before that. He walked onto the court and said, ‘Hit the showers, kid. You’re defaulted for cheating.’ He told me later, ‘You can do anything in life, but don’t cheat, don’t steal, and be respectful.’ His words impacted everything I did after that.” Surviving the Unthinkable In August 1985, Richard was on Delta Flight 191 sitting next to his father. He was just 12 years old and was on his way to Los Angeles for a tennis tournament when the plane came in for a crash landing at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Richard was one of 27 passengers who survived, all because he wasn’t wearing his seat belt when the explosion catapulted him 100 yards from the wreckage. His father was one of the 136 passengers who perished in the crash. “I remember that I had used the lavatory around 20 minutes before the crash and when I looked in the mirror something told me not to fasten my seatbelt,” Richard recalls. He also remembers being uneasy about the flight the night before, something he had never experienced before. The crash changed his life and his direction in many ways. Richard tried to continue following the path of his family’s tennis legacy and even turned pro before his 18th birthday. But his new fear of flying continually got in the way. In his late teens, he was returning from a tournament in Brazil when the plane had to force an emergency landing. Afterwards, he quit professional tennis for good. “It wasn’t until becoming CEO of Kate Farms that I had to rationalize getting over my fear of flying,” he explains. “The moment I started flying for Katie, all of my fear just went away. I simply had faith that I was doing the mission I was supposed to do in my life and that it would be all right.” Now Richard logs 40 to 50 round-trip flights a year on behalf of the family’s company.
Tennis Championship. Rod is still regarded as one of the greatest tennis athletes in history, holding 200 singles titles – the most in tennis history. Rod also holds the all-time male singles records of 22 titles in a single season (1962), 11 Grand Slam singles titles, and five Davis Cup titles for Australia. “Tennis was always a part of our family,” shares Richard. “I was focused on being the best, following in my family’s footsteps, and eventually becoming an entrepreneur like my dad.” As Richard tells it, the Laver family always dreams big. “My father built the biggest tennis resort in the world right on the coast of 24
Florida and the ‘Rocket’ as Rod was nicknamed, made being a legend look very cool.” Richard was born left-handed like Rod and was also supremely talented, so the comparisons started at a young age. “Running around my father’s grounds at Laver’s Resort during his tennis events like the Lipton were amazing. I watched how he created a dream and sold off thousands of condos all around a tennis concept. But I also learned the Laver family values as a young child.” Richard recalls a day when he was in the midst of a heated battle with an opponent who had cheated him earlier in the match. A Meant-To-Be Love Story Michelle grew up in Saudi Arabia as the daughter of a prominent doctor who served at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital from 1977-2000. “The Middle Eastern culture I grew up in is very different from that of today,” she describes. “I was exposed to meaningful ceremonies, incredible people, and the beautiful desert landscape which is very similar to Palm Desert.” “After arriving in Los Angeles and separating from my first husband, a girlfriend and I went to a special event during the Bob Hope Classic put on by John Daly and Darius Rucker,” she continues. “I was seated next to Richard. After hours of getting to know him, we exchanged numbers and left as friends, thinking he could teach my kids tennis and give them lessons. After a while, we reconnected by phone after his card came flying out of my purse when a car almost ran into me! I wondered if it was a
sign, so I traveled to Palm Springs back in 2003 to attend a tennis party he was throwing. We talked forever that night and we have been together ever since. In 2006, we had Katie and he supported me through some of our darkest moments. We were meant to be together.” Five years ago, in a charming ceremony in Joshua Tree, Michelle and Richard said “I do” with the kids there in celebration. “Our family means the world to us,” relates Richard. “Katie has been an incredible blessing and is our teacher in helping us to let go of the things we can’t control and just celebrate being alive every day.” The Lavers Discover BIGHORN “I’ve always loved hiking around BIGHORN,” shares Richard. “Once we had the opportunity to start looking for a desert home, we met Jacquie Burns with BIGHORN Properties and Mike Grenier, the Membership Director, who showed us all the amazing amenities. We were impressed with the philanthropic efforts that BIGHORN makes as a community. We knew we would be surrounded by real genuine people who are entrepreneurs like us and who have had to take incredible leaps of faith throughout their lives. Everyone we meet has their own story, their own hikes, and their own celebrations – and we are anxious to meet them all.” The Lavers’ focus on holistic health blends beautifully with their time spent hiking on nearby trails, working out in the fitness center, taking Katie for long walks on property, and dining in the Canyons Steak House. “The staff here is incredible. They respond so well to Katie and accommodate our needs with seating and special foods,” Richard says. “We feel so lucky to be here at BIGHORN and can’t wait for season to begin!” 25

Thriving Tennis Program takes on the Indian Wells Tennis Garden 28
29
BIGHORN’s thriving tennis program had the amazing opportunity to play at the iconic Indian Wells Tennis Garden (IWTG), home of the prestigious BNP Paribas Open, not once, but twice this season. Owner of the IWTG, Larry Ellison, CEO and co-founder of Oracle, generously donated two very special tennis experiences. The first was a live auction item for the BIGHORN BAM Night of Miracles event: three hours of playing in Stadium 1, where only the very best are invited to play, including the Williams sisters, Sharapova, Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal. The stadium hosts the second largest tennis tournament in the world. A second opportunity came during the BIGHORN BAM Inaugural Tennis Charity Mixer in April. The luckiest live auction winners were Pam & Peter McIlroy, longtime BAM supporters who purchased this ultimate package then proceeded to invite the entire tennis program to participate. On a gorgeous Saturday morning in March, right after the BNP Paribas tournament, a party bus shuttled the group to IWTG where BIGHORN Tennis Directors Dan Aubuchon and Frank Fanning lead drills on the extraordinarily expansive court.
30
“We were thrilled that everyone could share this experience,” exclaimed Peter. “Dan and Frank put together a fast-paced program of warm-up drills and men’s and ladies’ mixed doubles games. A dozen ball boys and girls and a professional umpire added a special touch to the experience. Winners were crowned in various categories, none of which had anything to do with tennis. As we always say, “ ‘Tennis players have more fun!’ ”
of the year. Players received drills by the most talented instructors in the Valley, followed by mixed doubles games on IWTG’s practice courts. Winning points went toward the ultimate prize – playing on the Stadium 2 court in front of your peers. The final matches came down to: 1st Match: Winners: Derrick Hoag and Lucy Zapf Finalists: Cheryl Vecchiolla and Etti Zuckerman 2nd Match Winners: Simone Walsh and Steve Rothenberg Finalists: Kerry Killinger and Sandy Lemerise
After the interactive drills, McIlroy along with Members Jeff Aarthun, John Ackermann, and Bruce Titcomb played a semi-competitive match adding to the awe-inspiring day they will never forget. Behind-the-scenes tours were also given for an insider’s look at players’ locker rooms, training facilities, and the Champions Room. Participants agreed the tour’s ultimate highlight was walking down the tunnel that the pros use to enter the stadium.
“Experienced and new players enjoyed the fun, spirited atmosphere that we provided,” described tournament chairs Toni Ackermann and Lisa Reid. “Pairing that with the opportunity to support local cancer patients, we knew we had a winning combination!

Se Ri Pak’s Legendary Career
Impressive $avings with Smart Energy

An Extraordinary Mark Made on the LPGA Se Ri Pak was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2007 for her stellar playing career that featured 25 career LPGA victories including five major titles. But as BIGHORN Member Pak retired from the game at 38 this summer, it would be fitting if she was inducted into the Hall again for her influence on the game. Because starting with her first LPGA win at the 1998 LPGA Championship, Pak literally changed the very fabric of the LPGA. Pak’s breakout 1998 season, with four wins and two major championships, exposed her native South Korea to LPGA golf. As Pak continued to win LPGA events, thousands of Korean girls watched and dreamed of following the trailblazing Pak’s example. For names like Inbee Park and Jiyai Shin, who each became the No. 1 player in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, and dozens of others who have played the LPGA, Pak was a role model, an idol and a mentor. She was Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson and Michael Jordan in a 5-foot-6 package. Pak retired after the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open, the championship that was the crowning victory of her 1998 season. She walked away from the game as not only a Hall of Fame player but as a bridge between two cultures and a figure who fundamentally changed the LPGA. 32

Two Decades of Service BIGHORN Chairman R.D. Hubbard has always remarked, “BIGHORN’s best asset is our incredibly talented staff.” And Members wholeheartedly agree! With 31 employees having served over 20 years at BIGHORN, some even stretching back for over 25 years before BIGHORN began, it’s easy to see that the team is worth its weight in gold! Several individuals grew into their positions, including General Manager Tony Ogrodnick who started as a Golf Host and moved up to Golf Shop Assistant then to Head Golf Professional and Director of Golf for 14 years before his current role as General Manager. The same can be said for Mike Grenier who currently serves as the Membership Director. The average tenure of a BIGHORN employee is over nine years; and open positions are far and few between with family members often recommending cousins or siblings for jobs. “We are so proud of our BIGHORN family,” shares Hubbard. “Their dedication, innovation, and personalization in everything they do make us the #1 club in the country.”

Membership Director Mike Grenier has observed the overwhelming effect that BIGHORN has on visitors and guests for quite some time. “I love touring guests through the property,” he says. “They begin with certain expectations and within minutes they’re astonished by the vigorous and friendly lifestyle, and they start imagining themselves here. When they consider that since 2009 all of the facilities are actually owned by the Club without debt, and that we operate entirely in the black with additional funds in reserves, they realize that BIGHORN isn’t just a home or a lifestyle – it’s a magnificent investment in which to buy and build.” The growing list of BIGHORN amenities also includes first-class ground and air transport, MedJet membership, expert business and concierge services, and impeccable privacy and security. "BIGHORN's vision is a Club and community that is continually improving, renewing, and responding to current lifestyle needs of today's family," affirms BIGHORN Vice President of Development, Carl Cardinalli. "The vision is realized in continually creating new amenities and renovating and improving existing amenities. It's imperative to always be relevant to today's lifestyle." As a result, BIGHORN's reputation and appeal as one of the world's premier Clubs continues to grow. Located just minutes from the desert’s dazzling array of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues, BIGHORN is about more than reputation or prestige. The vital power of the Club emanates from the relaxed and enduring environment provided by a private, protected community among a myriad of spectacular amenities. Building On Perfection

Innovative Enhancements, Cutting-Edge Approach Define BIGHORN’s 20-Year Success Ground-breaking ideas are common at BIGHORN. They are a foundational element and way-of-life approach since its 1996 purchase by R.D. Hubbard and 20 forward-thinking Members. A leading community recognized the world over for a visionary commitment to progress and excellence, BIGHORN has never rested on its laurels or been concerned about what other clubs are doing. For two decades, Chairman R.D. Hubbard’s outside-thebox perspectives have shunned the status quo and continually shaped a future that offers the ultimate lifestyle for Members.
Now in its 20th season, the Valley’s “Innovation Club” strengthens its advantage with plans for a new Clubhouse unlike any other. In cutting-edge BIGHORN fashion, there’s a twist. The new Clubhouse will incorporate four 5,000+ sf luxury penthouses for the ultimate in concierge lifestyle. Not only will the Penthouses offer style, convenience and prestige, but they will also make a significant contribution to the cost of the new Clubhouse. Another example of BIGHORN’s leadership in being one of the most innovative communities in the world.
Designed by the award-winning architectural firm Swaback Partners, the desert contemporary look of the new Clubhouse employs a breathtaking use of space and light to blend timeless style with new state-of-the-art amenities. Set strategically on the site of the former Clubhouse, the new Clubhouse will be positioned to deftly incorporate all of the surrounding vistas and offer a “life after golf” component. Because as Hubbard says, “The Clubhouse is as much about living, playing, and entertaining as it is about enjoying a spectacular game of golf.” “Because the Clubhouse is being constructed on a familiar footprint,” explains John Sather, AIA, AICP, “we want to embrace the character of the surroundings and create an awe-inspiring design that moves the building forward, celebrating the panoramic mountain and down-valley views. We are creating a seamless blend of indoor/outdoor living with an organic arc that welcomes you into the space almost embracing you into the relaxed, fun, utopia lifestyle beyond.” “BIGHORN’s Clubhouse won’t be like anywhere else because the Membership is unlike anywhere else,” Sather continues. “BIGHORN’s successful Membership is open to bold, new ideas while at the same time wanting the ‘downtime’ casual feel that comes
with enjoying a vacation retreat, a place where you hear laughter everywhere and you make friends easily. Certainly there are elements of sophistication and organic materials, but it’s their inviting warmth and design that will embrace Members and their families and make them feel like they are home. We think of it as the new gathering place that blurs the lines of art and architecture becoming one with great friends, food, wine and just clebrating life together. What could be better than that?” “Given the tremendous history of BIGHORN, it is a complete honor to work on such an innovative project.” As Sather expressed to Members, “Your Membership is so well-respected and accomplished that I was humbled to present our plans and be given this exciting opportunity. Your culture is like no other in that you have a fearless leader in your Chairman R.D. Hubbard who is straightforward and challenges us to do our finest work. As an architect that is music to our ears. He has brought us to a place where we didn’t know we could go, and we have excelled past our own limits. BIGHORN knows itself and its Membership and it knows where it wants to go!” To add to the excitement, Swaback Partners designed the living room and Pour House with Calderesque sculptural forms suspended from a soaring ceiling. Initial concepts of the central heart of the Clubhouse show an incredible sense of space along with the relaxed, informal, BIGHORN feel that Members love and perpetuate.
Designed to dazzle, the Golf Boutique will be like shopping in an upscale Madison Avenue boutique. Its glass-walled oval design will complement an impressive array of designer fashions.

“It’s rare and extremely bold what BIGHORN is doing in building a Clubhouse,” shares Sather. “To look forward and say we can be better and our success has no limits. That’s an absolute dream! So many times, when working with a committee, the design gets so watered down because the committee is trying to please too many people. BIGHORN already knows it’s the best and is growing and reaching toward the future!” Swaback Partners created the unique design, but the collaboration of Swaback, Lusardi Construction, and Blackbird Interiors has been symphonic. “We are all accomplished designers and understand what’s important for BIGHORN,” shares Sather, “So we are all giving our very best work while remaining a strong force together to complete the ultimate Clubhouse. We are all playing together like a piece of beautiful music, complementing each other’s strengths to complete a spectacular symphony.” As Members enter the building, the living room becomes art. From an incredibly high ceiling, suspended floating cloud forms are fashioned like an Alexander Calder design with curvilinear lines that blend with unique materials and gorgeous limestone.
BIGHORN Members since 2005, Blackbird Interiors has created and implemented interior design for several spec and private homes. Hubbard felt that Kathy Blackbird and Bob Call, the owners of Blackbird Interiors, were the natural choice to furnish the interiors of the Club’s latest legacy. “It was a tremendous honor to be selected,” shares Kathy Blackbird and Bob Call. “Our modern take on the desert contemporary style of the new Clubhouse blends natural organic elements with artistic lighting and a comfortable ambiance. We know our Members’ tastes are to arrive into a welcoming, informal living space, so we are blending neutral textures with beautiful woods, metallic accents, and feature walls that become art within themselves.” The living room’s sofas and chairs feature a unique combination of durable chenille fabrics, copper leathers, and metallic accents. Handsome wood coffee tables are crafted to be a beautiful design when moved together as one, but they also to break into four pieces for movability. The concierge desk blends stone with gorgeous walnut and is enveloped by a stacked stone wall showcasing the best of the natural textures enhanced by effective lighting. “We imagine Members meeting their guests in the living room, golfers catching up with friends, and families gathering before going to dinner,” adds Blackbird.
Initial concept of the concierge station blending walnut and stone. 45
A 35-foot feature wall will set the environment for banquette seating. The Pour House will host a variety of table seating options in the dining room.
The Pour House restaurant, known for its hip vibe and relaxed atmosphere, will take center stage in the new Clubhouse. Seamless indoor/outdoor dining enjoyed day to night pairs with expansive views of the Coachella Valley and Shadow Hills. “We love the lack of formality of The Pour House,” shares Sather. “The indoor/outdoor dining areas blur the line subtly so when you walk in the entrance you can enjoy everything that lies before you.” “Defining the entry to The Pour House are intricate, eye-catching amber light fixtures that will add character to this popular eating and drinking venue,” shares Blackbird. “We have custom designed beautiful wood consoles to provide a focal point for the entrance, which will also serve the convenience of the wait staff. Copper, leathers, and textural fabrics are used in the most comfortable

dining chairs; rich organic wood plank tables provide the perfect slate for Chef Greg’s impeccable cuisine; and the stunning backlit bar will invite smaller groups to enjoy a glass of wine while viewing one of three televisions.” “We are very excited about the 35-foot feature wall that will combine several artistic elements to create a custom treatment for a unique banquette wall. Reminiscent of the colors of a sunset and the sparkle of the stars, this artistic vignette will be jaw-dropping,” adds Call. Outside, Members and guests can enjoy the always beautiful mountain views as the sun dances against the Shadow Hills. Perched above the 18th fairway of the Mountains course, onlookers will get to enjoy the game without having to play a stroke.
Visionary Leadership leads to Visionary Design “What R.D. Hubbard does for BIGHORN far exceeds a traditional leadership role,” shares Carl Cardinalli, Vice President of Development and Director of Sales. “His drive and vision are always attuned to the wants and needs of Members and, as with any business, its vitality depends on the relevancy to its customers. On any given day you’ll find R.D. or ‘Dee’ golfing on one of BIGHORN’s courses, stopping by The Marketplace, meeting friends at The Vault, dining at the Canyons Steak House, checking in on a myriad of amenities, or meeting potential homeowners. Along the way he is constantly engaging Members in conversation and enjoys comments regarding the facilities and services.” Hubbard has built the Club around his personal connection to and genuine relationships with Members, and they notice. Investor and Member Robert Masterson says, “I have to give
46
a lot of credit to R.D. He’s always listening to the Members – to their needs and wants. Every year he’s trying to add additional amenities. He’s not letting other clubs catch up to him. He’s always pushing our Club further and further into the future, and trying to create something better.” Today, Residency and Membership continue to grow both through Member referral and new people drawn to BIGHORN by its reputation and offerings. Even through the country’s most difficult economic times when most business, residential communities, and golf clubs were struggling and contracting, BIGHORN sustained and continued to grow. Its leadership never lost sight of the original objective and continued to invest in the realization of the vision which proved to be the driving force in BIGHORN’s success. And the success and drive for perfection continues; they are part of BIGHORN’s DNA. 47
New event facilities, both indoor and outdoor, were purposefully designed to facilitate the Club’s 100+ in-season events and provide areas accommodating private parties of up to 200 people or club-wide parties for 500. “We are capturing a large party space with a grand entry walking into the middle of the crowd as you descend down artistic shaped structures,” expresses Sather. “You’ll feel at home integrated with architecture and serviced by premium staff.”
Instead of a typical golf shop, the new Clubhouse will feature a dynamic, glass-enclosed Golf Boutique which will infuse Madison Avenue chic with the service, personality, and quality merchandise that earned BIGHORN a place as one of “America’s Top 100 Golf Shops” by Golfweek for 14 consecutive years. Designed to impress, the design team has taken advantage of every square inch of these focal spaces making them feel luxurious yet relaxed, functional and fun. These are truly spaces Members will want to show off to their friends and family. Each locker room boasts panoramic views, natural light, and full-service dining options that appeal to the aesthetic sensibilities of women and men.
“This is not your dad’s golf shop,” adds Sather. “We designed it to be a jewel, an element not to be missed!”
“Even the lockers we’ve created are unique to BIGHORN, incorporating a tempered fiberglass illuminated around a wood laminate material giving a one-of-a-kind experience,” says Blackbird.

Rendering of Penthouse Four
The one word to describe the Penthouses is, “WOW!” “We have capitalized on the site’s tremendous views, which is only the beginning,” says Sather. Imagine being at the center of everything while enjoying the ultimate in privacy and lifestyle. The Penthouses at BIGHORN offer the lifestyle of a private, custom residence with the immediate convenience of BIGHORN’s unrivaled concierge service at your fingertips. No other Clubhouse will have so intimately integrated such a stunning private residence into the setting of the ultimate in concierge living. Hubbard adds, “We’ve walked through the threshold of the future and are setting a new standard in the Clubhouse world. I look forward to seeing BIGHORN continue to set the standard for the finest Clubhouses of our time.” The illustrative floor plan of Penthouse Four, shown here, is from the imagination of world-renowned designer Guy Dreier whose contemporary home concepts have graced the covers of Architectural Digest and The Robb Report and have merited international recognition including the 2009 NAICP Spotlight Award and 2008 Home of the Year.
Dreier’s floorplan seeks to meet the expectations of an owner who wants spacious luxury with the ease of Penthouse living. When people ask, “How did you two meet?” Colleen and Hugh Greenway can’t help but deliver a romantic tale that seems straight from a war-time novel. At the time, both were devoted to military careers that helped people heal. Today, Hugh maintains that aim as Dr. Hugh Greenway at Scripps Clinic in San Diego.
Married for almost 40 years, Colleen, from Montana, and Hugh, from Georgia, met each other across the world when fate stepped into their lives. Their individual paths had taken them to Okinawa, Japan, where Colleen was an Army emergency room nurse and Hugh was a Navy doctor stationed with the Marines up island from the Army Hospital. One night, Hugh flew in by helicopter with a patient and Colleen was part of the team to save the young

Marine’s life. That’s where it all started. The couple had been dating for four months when Hugh was called to deploy to Korea and Colleen received orders for Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco. They nurtured their budding romance long-distance until Colleen met Hugh at the Top of the Mark in San Francisco where he proposed in this iconic setting. They married one week after her discharge from the Army in Kalispell, Montana, and drove off to Atlanta to begin their new life together. During their two years in”The Big Peach,” Hugh was the Flight Surgeon at NAS Atlanta/Dobbins Air Force Base where he also became board certified in Family Practice. On Tuesday evenings, the couple continued working together in a free clinic set in the poorest part of downtown Atlanta.

Taught To Make A Difference Hugh originally became interested in a medical career after meeting his father’s good friend and Hugh’s Boy Scout Master (Hugh achieved the Eagle Scout rank in scouting), who also happened to be an allergy specialist, Dr. Carl Jones in Decatur, Georgia. Additionally, he was influenced by his father’s ongoing suffering. His dad, who had also been stationed in Okinawa, sustained a kidney injury there during WWII. He went on to have two kidney transplants – including one from Hugh’s younger brother – but tragically, his father died at the young age of 62.
As many people who love the desert’s sunny climate know, Mohs surgery is considered the most precise and effective technique for removing basal and squamous cell carcinomas, the two most common types of skin cancers. It also has a place within the treatment of certain melanoma cases. Mohs surgery has the lowest recurrence rates, highest cure rates (an unparalleled 98+ percent), and the best cosmetic results of any skin cancer treatment. Hugh has performed more than 37,000 Mohs surgery cases at Scripps Clinic for all types of skin cancers, bringing the clinic a wealth of expertise and recognition.
To this day, one of Hugh’s missions is to support his patients’ longevity. As Hugh says, “We were taught to believe that if you were able to make a difference in this world, then you needed to help!” After receiving his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Georgia in 1970 and his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia, he served as a medical missionary in Ghana, West Africa, before his internship and beginning his nine-year Navy career.
Post-residency, Hugh was asked by Dr. Mohs to take over his practice in Madison, Wisconsin – an astounding honor. Around the same time, however, Cecil Green (one of the four founders of Texas Instruments and lead donor of the Scripps Green Hospital) took Colleen and Hugh to dinner in La Jolla and extended to Hugh the opportunity to create the first Mohs surgical office at Scripps Clinic. “By then, we loved San Diego so we jumped at the opportunity. It’s been the best thing we ever did!” Colleen says.
In 1979, Colleen and Hugh moved from Atlanta to San Diego where Hugh completed his residency in Dermatology at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and was extremely fortunate to have been chosen for the Mohs Fellowship under the watchful eye of Dr. Fred Mohs himself! For this training opportunity of a lifetime, the travel-ready couple packed up again and headed for Madison, Wisconsin.
California Dreaming The Greenway family thrived out West, where they eventually had two sons: John, now 31, and Will, now 29. Southern California proved an excellent locale in which to raise a family, especially thanks to a favorite pastime: baseball. “I remember the boys in Little League,” recalls Colleen. During the first meeting, the team would always ask for volunteers and sponsors.
54
Hugh would write a sponsorship check and ensure the credit went to Scripps Clinic. One year, the organizers forgot to add “Scripps Clinic” to the team’s baseball jerseys and instead inked each one with “Hugh Greenway MD.” Colleen knew Hugh would have shunned the attention. “So I told him the team wasn’t very good and that he shouldn’t bother coming to a game until they got better. Meanwhile, I was frantically getting the jerseys reprinted!” But one day Hugh knew Will was playing in a game and naturally, as a proud Dad, he wanted to be there.
numerous accolades over the years including being named to the “Best Doctors in America” and “America’s Top Doctors for Cancer.” In 2000, he was named Chief Executive Officer of Scripps Clinic, a position he held for four years. He still insisted on continuing to see patients two days a week all while directing the operations of one of the nation’s most renowned healthcare and research facilities. “Hugh has always loved being a doctor,” confirms Colleen. “It’s who he is. He can’t turn it off, and I don’t ever want him to! He loves what he does.”
“You can imagine his surprise when he saw an entire team running around as Hugh Greenway MDs!” Colleen relates. The new jerseys arrived the next day, but the couple still enjoys a good laugh at the memory.
During his tenure as CEO, he oversaw 350 physicians and 1,500 nurses plus support staff at 11 Scripps locations in San Diego. In this role, he positioned the hospital to meet the medical and financial challenges of the healthcare industry. Big on teaching, he also promoted the clinical research and graduate medical education programs. His expertise in the Mohs surgical procedure has been passed along to over 45 doctors (each of whom spent a year with him at Scripps) who in turn practice this specialty around the world.
The Greenway sons have followed their passions to different states but the family remains close. John works in Midland, Texas, for Peak Completions. He holds a degree in business from RPI, a law degree from Mercer University, and an IMBA from the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. Will holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the University of Arizona in Urban and Regional development, and is also a board certified paramedic. He lives in Missoula, Montana, where he is the Community Development Manager for the Downtown Missoula Partnership. A Career That Cares Humble to the core, Hugh affirms that patient care is his favorite part of being a doctor. Making him one of the staff favorites, the majority of his team has been with him 10 to 20 years. A couple of his staff members have been with him over three decades! He has received

The BIGHORN Mohs Surgery and Dermatology Center led by “Best Doctors in America” Hugh Greenway.
The couple takes to the course as soon as they arrive on campus.
“I believe it is vital for a doctor to show they care for the patient’s overall wellbeing,” shares Hugh, who for over 30 years has served as chairman of what is today BIGHORN Dermatology and Mohs Surgery Center. As part of his patient care practice, Dr. Greenway says prevention and education are critical. Which is so applicable in all cancers including skin cancer. “Many of us were taught as kids to go and get a base tan early each summer, to get that first burn out of the way. But many of the skin cancer and melanoma cases I see today go back to excessive sun exposure from 30 to 35 years ago. It’s important for individuals who have moles or sun spots to have them checked annually, especially if any family members have a history of skin cancer.” Hugh emphasizes that prevention includes sunscreens, sunglasses, hats, clothing, and common sense. Hugh has authored many medical articles, chapter publications, and two textbooks. He has appeared on local, national, and international news in addition to in many lay press publications that have highlighted his skin cancer work and prevention. However, it wasn’t until spring of 2016 that his 92-year-old mother told him he had “finally made it” when he was quoted in Reader’s Digest!
56
Discovering BIGHORN In the 1990s, Hugh played in a charity golf tournament held at BIGHORN. He was impressed with the community and joined as a Member in 1999. A few years later, while sitting with Jacquie Burns from BIGHORN Properties and R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard, Colleen remembers confiding in them that if the right house ever came up they would be interested. Within a week, the right house indeed came along! Right away the couple loved its perfect combination of size, style, and rooms for their family to visit. And because both Colleen and Hugh are golfers at heart, they are still actively playing at BIGHORN in addition to the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club. These two are no strangers to hole-in-ones, either. Colleen has racked up three, including one on BIGHORN’S Mountains #13. Hugh’s first (and counting!) made personal history on Mountains’ #17. “The courses at BIGHORN are amazing and we love the no-tee-time policy,” shares Hugh. “We owe so much to BIGHORN’S Chairman, R.D. Hubbard, who has defined the best community culture here. There is only one other exceptional club that I know of that is run by one man and that’s Augusta. Hubbard is the best man for the job: He takes care of the Members and the staff.”
57
The couple takes full advantage of BIGHORN while they are here. Colleen swims laps in the pool, enjoys the Spa & Wellness Center, stops by The Marketplace for yogurt, and meets friends at the Dog Park. They love having dinner at the Canyons Steak House or The Pour House, or even grabbing a quick dinner in the Canyons bar. “BIGHORN is a dynamic community,” adds Colleen. “Nowhere else have we met such interesting people, all who have their own amazing stories. The people at BIGHORN are not only generous, but they simply know how to have the most fun. When we get into town, we spend all our time on the golf course, in the restaurants, at events, and laughing. We actually feel younger here. We’re making the most of every amenity and having the time of our lives. We’ve made so many friends that coming to BIGHORN has been the best wellness prescription we could have ever written!” Playing golf often leads Hugh to advising and treating his partners on and off the course. PGA Champions Tour Player Jim Colbert was diagnosed with prostate cancer during a physical at Scripps. The early catch and subsequent surgery saved his life. “Members come up to me, asking me to take a look at something or asking me for my advice. A few years ago we decided to hold complimentary yearly Skin Cancer Screenings at BIGHORN.” For two days every year, Hugh and his Scripps team of specialists set up offices in the Spa & Wellness Center where six dermatologists provide screenings. Patients leave with information to share with their own dermatologist. The results have proven extremely effective and even lifesaving. Each year, the team routinely discovers one to two patients with melanoma, several with non-melanoma skin cancers, and quite a few with atypical nevi (changing moles).
BIGHORN member John Pfeffer was diagnosed with a nearly superficial melanoma on his back during a BIGHORN screening. Four days later, the doctors at Scripps were able to remove it successfully and completely. This easy in-and-out procedure saved his life. “Having Scripps on campus gave a new meaning to the phrase, ‘If you’re lucky enough to live at BIGHORN, you’re lucky,’” says John. Soon he was back on the golf course enjoying his favorite game and is thrilled with the treatment he received. R.D. drove another Member to Scripps who had missed the BIGHORN screening. The team discovered a melanoma on his back and removed it before it spread. R.D. truly saved that Member’s life. Hugh appreciates that this leader shows a genuine interest in the health of each BIGHORN Member. Impressed with the excellent care they have received, BIGHORN Members have combined to donate over $43.5 million to Scripps Health including the recent successful effort by several Members to give over $5 million for the BIGHORN Mohs and Dermatology Center. “BIGHORN Members have supported Scripps Health and Scripps Clinic in an overwhelmingly generous fashion, allowing Scripps to provide state-of-the-art medical excellence and care for all of the southwestern United States,” shares Dr. Greenway. “This includes support for our new Heart Hospital, orthopedic center, cancer center, and, most recently, the BIGHORN Mohs and Dermatology Center. BIGHORN Mohs is only one of two centers in the world that is training three board certified dermatologists each year in a one-year fellowship to do advanced Mohs and laser surgery thanks to Members’ kindness. Thank you, BIGHORN!”

Romance Survives Cancer Selby and Curt Dunham met at BIGHORN 17 years ago during a party for one of the spec homes Curt had recently built on property. As a new Member, Selby attended with a girlfriend and immediately noticed Curt from across the room. “I was thinking, ‘He’s 6 foot 5, young, and probably married!” she laughs. But she made her way over anyway, only to discover she had coincidentally met his daughter the night before. Selby had been at a girlfriend’s house when his teenager and her friend had popped in for some last-minute hair curling before a school dance. After a first date dancing at Costas, and a bit of lag time on Curt’s part (he had confessed to Selby’s friend, “She’s a country club girl. What would she want with me?”), the two eventually sold their homes, moved to BIGHORN together, and have been here ever since. Shortly thereafter, in 2005, Selby was diagnosed with Stage 3 invasive breast cancer. Her rigorous treatment plan, which began the very next day, spanned from February through November of that year. It encompassed chemotherapy, a mastectomy, 33 grueling radiation treatments, and hormone therapy. “People have asked me, ‘How long have you been a survivor?’ The day I was diagnosed I became a survivor,” she says. “And as long as I am on this side of the earth, I will be a survivor.” Since then, Selby has been
an inspiration for fellow survivors, particularly those in the Coachella Valley. On a Hawaiian vacation the following January, Curt bent down on one knee and uttered the words neither one of them will ever forget: “With God above me and the setting sun and ocean behind me, I want to know if you’ll be my wife?” Selby recalls. “Then, the tears! And my hair was this short!” she gestures to show less than an inch. Curt’s two daughters and her son were excited they were getting married – and possibly just as excited to skip out of school and fly to the islands! After his Tuesday proposal, the two got married the following Saturday, then threw a Hawaiianthemed reception surrounded by their friends back at BIGHORN. “I met Selby here and we celebrated our marriage here,” Curt says. “And it’s become a very special place to me.” Fast forward to 2011 when daughter Whitney wed in the Dunhams’ backyard followed by a sit-down dinner and reception, which only added another meaningful layer to their family’s BIGHORN story. Selby and Curt’s growing family today, complete with three beautiful grandchildren.
62
The couple, who now have three grandchildren, have contributed to BIGHORN exponentially. Curt has built 25 homes and counting; Selby developed two homes before founding BAM and leading its tireless fundraising (and adventure-having!) events for a decade. Both anticipate years of fun ahead, whether it’s playing golf, bocce ball, horseshoes, ping pong, or holeyboard with their family at home or hitting the driving range together. “Our family is very competitive,” says Curt, and BIGHORN’s amenities tap into that. “Now the new clubhouse with its outdoor feeling and views will be the last piece of the puzzle,” he adds. “All we need is a gas station up here and we’ll never leave!”
Curt purchased this stunning sculpture by Mauro Corda named “L’Escalier” depicting a survivor descending a staircase. L’Escalier resides next to the entry and serves as a constant reminder of what’s most important in the world.
“Bam!” Becomes BIGHORN BAM BAM’s origin began while Selby was in recovery after her treatment. A BIGHORN committee for a breast cancer golf tournament asked Selby if she would lend a hand. Her brainchild to sell full sponsorships skyrocketed the money earned from $12,000 the year before to a whopping $86,000! The following year, the committee asked Selby to step up and chair the event. “Absolutely I would, I told them,” she says. “But this year we’re going to change it,” she had said. Instead of benefitting a national organization, Selby wanted to see every penny raised stay right here in the desert. Her vision was to save the lives of Coachella Valley cancer patients and improve their roads to recovery. Ten years later, few could have imagined the success or impact of those three letters. For Selby, the journey continues on many levels. “We need something that’s big and strong, like, you know, ‘Bam!’” friend Vicki Schons had said during a meeting back in 2005. A core group of women behind the golf tournament fundraiser had decided to change direction to ensure the funds they raised stayed in the Valley and they were brainstorming for a name. Her exclamation stuck. A Decade of BAM Miracles Ten years later, BIGHORN BAM (Behind A Miracle) is celebrating an anniversary of tremendous proportions and significance. An incredible $6.5 million has been raised in the past nine years for cancer patient support services, breast cancer diagnostic technologies, and educational scholarships. This extraordinary fundraising feat is made possible through hard-working volunteers and generous donors who understand the importance of finding a cure to cancer while at the same time adding fun and flair to BAM’s exciting events. And it all started with one visionary survivor.
63
“A lot of our patients are the very poor of the Coachella Valley that are now very sick,” says Sean Roberts, president of The Pendleton Foundation. “And when they have no other option to pay their rent and we’re able to say, ‘Yes, that rent is paid. Yes, your utilities will stay on,’ it’s a visible relief that is real.”
“Because I have been through cancer, people come to me seeking advice or just because they need someone to talk to,” Selby says. “I’m happy to do so because I can empathize with what that person might be going through.” Growing Through Giving BAM’s contagious energy, fire, and enthusiasm for fundraising has spread to BIGHORN Members, Valley donors, volunteers, and sponsors. In turn, their genuine spirit of giving has helped BAM grow. The generosity they have exhibited over the course of a decade affords BAM the chance to make a concentrated, locally focused difference like no other. BAM’s committee members are instrumental in orchestrating five cornerstone fundraising events. These kick off a season of philanthropy in November with A Miracle on El Paseo in all of its Holiday splendor, followed by Game Day for Life, initiated by survivor Susan Goldfine. The afternoon luncheon, fashion show, and shopping portion are followed by an afternoon of playing the most popular ladies’ games (including canasta, bridge, and mah jongg) to raise money for BAM. A Night of Miracles mixes entertainment and high-stakes auctions. A wine pull and paddle up, exciting silent and live auctions featuring watches from Leeds & Sons, and golf and wine vacations are de rigeur during this glorious evening of fundraising. The Cash for Caddies event and the Golf Tournament engage more than 100 BIGHORN Members in spirited competition, camaraderie, and golf-infused giving for a cause. In April, BAM introduced another sold-out event with the inaugural Charity Tennis Mixer in April at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Hot on the heels of the BNP Paribas Open, this world-class tennis experience opened with a warm-up session with IWTG’s pro staff followed by competitive doubles matches, a catered lunch by Piero’s PizzaVino, final matches played in the famed Stadium 2, a behind-the-scenes tour that included Larry Ellison’s celebrity suite, and a VIP cocktail reception. Over the years, BAM has raised funds with creativity, innovation, and a zest for the cause. From the one-hour hitting session with 64
Pete Sampras that was recently auctioned for $70,000 to three exclusive private dinners with Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn that featured the couple’s wines on the dinner table of R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard’s BIGHORN home a few years ago, over-the-top ideas have been rewarded with unbridled philanthropy. Curt has witnessed with pride and awe as Selby and the committee members have nurtured BAM into a mature and thriving non-profit organization. “Watching BAM grow like it has over the past ten years has been fantastic, and I can’t wait to see another ten,” he says. Success tends to breed success, and each year BAM has set new records as an increasing number of people from BIGHORN and beyond want to help and to give. Thanks to BAM, the 30,000 patients who are seen at the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center and Schnitzer/Novack Breast Center annually are diagnosed and treated with high-performance, cutting-edge technologies purchased with funds raised by BIGHORN BAM. From mammogram systems, ultrasound machines, and comforting spa robes for patients awaiting radiation treatment to the BIGHORN BAM Procedure Suite that allows patients to receive comprehensive care in one location, the life-saving enhancements they have provided at Eisenhower Medical Center have contributed to its reputation as a premier health care facility that continues to receive accolades and honors. “We need to help them stay on the cutting edge with equipment and technology and we need to help all people in the Valley receive the best treatment,” Selby says, looking out to BAM’s horizon. “If we continue to have the best equipment and technology then we will continue to have the best doctors, too.” Local Lives Impacted, Starting at Home Each year Eisenhower supplies BAM with a “wish list,” which BAM astonishingly excels in fulfilling. Yet medical equipment and related transportation services are only the beginning. BIGHORN BAM has also given $520,000 to The Pendleton Foundation to assist local cancer patients in need with help in covering their most basic essentials, including groceries, gas, utilities, and rent for patients who are too sick to work.
“It is truly a family here,” Selby says of BIGHORN and the spirit that has propelled BAM year after year. “When I was diagnosed, I received so many letters, calls, cards from friends, from people I had met BIGHORN and from some I didn’t even know. This caring group gave such an outpouring of support and I am so lucky to be part of it. Jerry Weintraub called and offered me anything I needed, down to his personal jet. And I hadn’t even met him. That’s just the kind of people who are here.” BIGHORN BAM – 10 Years Strong That outpouring hit a new milestone last year with the purchase of a second van that shuttles patients in need to and from their treatments. For Selby, the organization’s ability to have provided more than 8,500 round-trip rides for patients over the last nine years carries personal meaning. During her 10 months battling cancer, she met a woman named Alice while they were both undergoing treatment. When Alice missed several appointments, Selby learned that she relied solely upon public transit to reach the hospital by bus. “Our lives had crossed at that moment and it allowed me to see there was a great need,” she recalls. “Because of that, providing transportation to get patients to and from their chemo and radiation appointments has moved to the forefront of our fundraising efforts. Without safe, reliable transportation, they can’t get to treatment. Without treatment, they can’t get better. When you see a pink BAM van, you’ll know where it’s going!” After 10 extraordinary years, BAM remains different and unique in its approach and its results. While many non-profits struggle and strive to hit the million-dollar mark over the course of a decade, BAM has surpassed an astounding $6.5 million in fundraising and is stronger than ever in its efforts and its numbers. The organization knows how every single cent is spent and it’s all spent within the Coachella Valley, on equipment and resources that benefit local patients. Eisenhower’s annual wish list, for example, only drives the organization even harder to fulfill it. 65
A Brighter Tomorrow Selby Dunham sits on the Board of Directors at Eisenhower, with a full view on where BAM’s funds are going – an added level of assurance that they are utilized to the fullest. “When I was diagnosed, I knew nothing about breast cancer,” Selby shares. “Dr. Luke told me right off, ‘I’m not here to save your breasts, I’m here to save your life.’ I called UCLA, MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas, and Cedars-Sinai. Their doctors all said they would do the exact same thing that he wanted to do. So here we are living in this tiny valley and you wonder if you’re getting the best care. I learned that yes, indeed I was getting the best care. Talk about peace of mind. That knowledge fostered my healing and helped me focus on the positive.” Selby’s first experience with Eisenhower’s staff and facilities became the first of many. Now, as founder of BAM, she has led an incomparable movement to give back. Ten years strong, BAM continues to improve care, save lives, and build a brighter future for breast care patients Valley-wide.
10-Year Projection: BAM at 20 In the next decade, BIGHORN BAM dedicates itself to: • Supporting Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center’s rise to becoming one of the top cancer centers in America. • Providing transportation to cancer patients Valley-wide who depend on public transportation to receive their treatments on the road to recovery. • Gifting additional funds to The Pendleton Foundation so they can ease even more of the financial burdens faced by cancer patients, who can then focus on their healing. • Encouraging other clubs to support BAM’s mission and help fund specific projects that they too can be proud of. • Continuing to make significant impacts in the diagnosis and treatment of local cancer patients by supporting organizations that host free mammogram days to the most underserved citizens.
BIGHORN Member Stacie Mathewson has been on a journey for the past four years. A journey of founding Transforming Youth Recovery (TYR), a nonprofit organization to address substance use disorders amongst our youth, tracking it down to the traumatized child. Sadly, Stacie lost her son Josh Montoya to addiction in 2013. Her commitment to preventing the path towards addiction and protecting the health and wellbeing of our youth is unrelenting. The nonprofit’s work focuses on seven key initiatives. The Mathewson Early Prevention Program (MEPP), is the nation’s largest research-driven prevention program to determine best practices in family and school-based prevention, intervention and recovery services for students in grades Pre K–12. TYR is launching a 13year, 20-million-dollar grant with the Washoe County School District in Reno, Nevada to change a generation and generations to come.
66
Outside of traditional high schools, TYR revitalized the National Association of Recovery High Schools (ARS). ARS has been essential in creating, maintaining and accrediting recovery high schools throughout our nation. Following the student up to community college and higher education, TYR focuses on the creation of collegiate sobriety programs which are on campus environments that directly support students in recovery from substance use disorders. TYR has accomplished two of their initiatives with revitalizing the National Association of Recovery
High Schools and providing over 100 grants to universities across the nation in just four years. While TYR’s previous studies focused specifically on educational impact, they are strategically turning their attention to the bigger picture of supporting parents and their children as they strive to live their best lives. Not just the family, but the community. Additionally, they focus on finding solutions for communities by identifying gaps and creating integrated and sustainable recovery-oriented systems of care. Pilot programs are currently underway in Northern Nevada to serve as models that can be replicated by other communities in the nation. Realizing the need to create an interactive database system for the recovery movement, they developed Capacitype™, which maps recovery assets across the nation. This application will serve as a national database of resources and services available within the fields of substance use disorders, prevention, intervention and recovery support. Mathewson’s vision and dedication to prevention and recovery support for our youth is making a significant impact on the nation. Congratulations on your dynamic efforts! Lights, Camera, Action! One of the most dynamic estates in the country is located within one of the most prestigious golf communities in the world. The Weintraub Estate, home of the late Jerry Weintraub, concert promoter and movie producer extraordinaire, features the most show-stopping architecture, design, and state-of-the-art amenities with panoramic views all within a very private community. A Hollywood mogul and highly respected international name in the entertainment business, Weintraub was best known for his production of Ocean’s 11, 12, and 13, as well as being the manager for Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. The Weintraub Estate was fondly nicknamed the “home that Ocean’s 11 built.” Upon the completion of the home, Weintraub invited the cast of Ocean’s 12 for an international press junket at famed BIGHORN, an exclusive, private golf community 15 miles east of Palm Springs. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle, Catherine Zeta-Jones and her husband Michael Douglas all stayed at the estate while Diane Sawyer produced a “Primetime” feature on site. The crew conducted entertainment interviews in the morning then enjoyed the afternoons working out, playing golf, or hanging poolside.

During the “Primetime Live” special, Sawyer was flown in by helicopter from Los Angeles and was incredibly impressed with the Weintraub Estate calling it “the most amazing house.” She added, “There are no straight walls in this house,” and asked Weintraub, “Did you dream this up all by yourself?” He answered, ”I’ve always dreamed about having indoor/outdoor living with doors that open at the push of a button. I hired this genius architect Guy Dreier and he took my ideas and designed his creation.” The special showed off the truly unique swimming pool that wraps around the home, accessible from the master baths and gym, and Sawyer was fascinated with the clear glass showers that had privacy treatments so no one could see you. When she sat down with the Oceans 12 cast, Sawyer asked Damon if this was like living in a fraternity house this week. He answered, “This is the nicest frat house I’ve ever seen!” Cheadle quickly chimed in, “It’s Kappa Kappa Damn!” Everyone erupted into a huge laugh, their chemistry brewing up to culminate in one of her most spirited interviews that would ever air on her show.

Sawyer then asked the crew, “Who is the perkiest one in the morning?” To which Garcia said, “George because he hasn’t gone to bed yet.” “Good answer,” replied Clooney. Sawyer then asked Weintraub, “When they come to see you, you don’t play games right?” He laughed and said, “No they play games – there’s non-stop fun!” Weintraub then proceeded to tell her how when they met together at Clooney’s house in Lake Como to discuss the next Oceans movie, they made Brad Pitt responsible to get the girl. And at the Venice Film Festival he told Pitt after seeing Zeta-Jones, “We’ve gotta get this broad.” Together Julia Roberts and Zeta-Jones easily each became “one of the guys” and made movie magic history. As Clooney said in Richard Cohen’s 2008 article in Vanity Fair: “Nobody could have pulled off as many stars. There is a trick to it. If one person goes nutty, or thinks someone else is getting treated better, the whole thing can collapse just like that. So it requires a patriarch who can sit above everyone and everything and say, ‘Do it like this – do it for me.’ And that’s always been Jerry.” 78
Designed by Guy Dreier, the open floorplan with 9,152 sf of exquisite indoor living and over 1,000 sf of outdoor covered living was constructed so that with the push of a button the entire house is open and “on,” from music and televisions to water features and fireplaces. The estate features 6 bedrooms, 7.5 baths, a custom pub that pays homage to the iconic Claridge’s Bar in London, media room, office, guest family room, 6-car garage plus a private golf cart garage off the master. The elevation of this site affords some of the most picturesque views in the Coachella Valley – reaching from Palm Springs to Eisenhower Peak and the surrounding Santa Rosa range. Views also include the Tom Faziodesigned Canyons course’s 16th and 17th fairways.
A waterfall, one of thousands of details, enhances the entry. Another example of the home’s dynamic composition of movement, angles, and materials.
In Dreier’s quest to make the home look as if it rose up from between the mountains, he incorporated into the exterior finishes curved Panther slate to give the estate movement and fluidity while staying true to the natural environment. Lush landscaping and refreshing water features enhance a welcoming entry, while an artistic steel gate and pocketing glass wall slide open to reveal one of the most breathtaking contemporary masterpieces in BIGHORN. 79
“Beaumaniere limestone flooring, cedar wood ceilings, and smooth plaster walls create the perfect gallery to display some of Jerry’s favorite pop-influenced art,” shares BIGHORN Properties Broker Associate Lorna Ball. “A stunning, double-sided fireplace is a sculpture in its own right, providing both drama and elegance to set the stage as you enter the home. Much strength was drawn – literally and figuratively – from the natural granite mountains surrounding this estate, so this architectural statement had to be worthy.”
Around this fireplace, two custom granite tables can offer intimate seating for your favorite few couples, or combine for seating for 20 of your closest friends. Then, with the push of a button, curved glass walls disappear to reveal romantic patio dining, as well as the outdoor wet bar and living room – all with breathtaking views. Chefs will relish every moment in the gourmet kitchen surrounded by Obechie cabinetry, state-of-the-art appliances, Walnut Wave granite, and crackled glass countertops. Wolfgang Puck welcomed the pleasure of preparing many meals of red-carpet proportion in this stellar space. 80

“Ocean’s Bar” is modeled after the Art Deco-style pub Claridge’s in London. A classic hammered tin ceiling, warm wood paneling and floors, opaque sconces, and onyx accents are the backdrop for a handsome bar with seating for four, a game table for six, oversized club chairs with matching ottoman, and six flat-screen televisions with surround-sound. Adjoining the open kitchen is a second media lounge, where theatre chairs and upholstered furnishings showcase a limestone fireplace and six flat-screen televisions.
His Bath
The real star of the show in the master wing is the cantilevered bedroom above the pool. Guy Dreier created a glass floor at the foot of the bed exposing the pool below. As a dramatic touch, electronic corner glass walls glide open effortlessly, making it feel like you are at the edge of the mountain looking out over the entire valley. The space revels in warm morning light by day and complete privacy at night. The bed’s Obechie headboard is a single piece of floating furniture that also incorporates nightstands and a curved credenza, creating an elegant place for art, storage, and slumber. Combined with the Honey Onyx fireplace, this retreat is truly stunning! “Guy Dreier is so creative. He creates wow factors that blend artfully into the beautiful design of the home and the surrounding topography,” adds Lorna. Separate “his” and “hers” baths are thoughtfully appointed, from the Green Rainforest and Black Absolute Granite vanities, custom floating mirrors, glass showers leading out to the private “master” pool and spa, and the gorgeous Obechie (for her) and Macassar Ebony (for him) cabinetry. The master bath alone is fit for the set of a blockbuster film! The steam room with a curved Black Absolute Granite chaise is accessible from his bath as well as from the in-home gym, with

high-performance equipment, morning bar, and massage table. The office features a custom handcrafted Macassar Ebony desk and shelving, while a private-entry golf cart garage continues with custom ebony built ins, morning bar, and storage – all conveniently located within the master wing of the main residence. The most A-list facet of the house, however, might just be the entertainment possibilities. Dreier’s organic design draws you into the outdoor living room to enjoy panoramic views of the Canyons course, Santa Rosa mountain range, and the valley below. Watch television in the fireplace lounge, or relax on the sunbather’s deck. Looking up at the house from the golf course below, one can fully appreciate the stunning, signature architecture when set against the sunset-cast mountains. On June 5th, Memorial Tournament host Jack Nicklaus proudly celebrated with BIGHORN’s own William McGirt after winning his first PGA TOUR victory. Nicklaus raved about McGirt’s bunker shot on the 18th hole at Muirfield Village that kept him in the playoff. He followed up that shot with an easy, well easy for him, flop shot from behind the green and a 6-foot putt to secure his victory over John Curran. “Surprisingly, I felt no nerves standing over that putt and poured it right in the middle,” McGirt said. “I kept doing it because this was my ultimate dream, to get on the PGA TOUR and try to win,” added McGirt. Now he’s No. 43 in the world, has won against one of the strongest fields in one of the tour’s best known and respected tournaments, and has been assured a spot in his first national championship. “We are very proud of William,” shares BIGHORN Chairman R.D. Hubbard. “We wish him great success with his upcoming tournaments – he’s a rising star!”

BIGHORN’s Culinary Team rivals any high-end resort in the world. Their stellar expertise, panache for a wide variety of events, and delicious, artfully presented dishes blows away the competition. Executive Chef Greg Proper believes in hiring innovative chefs, both in creativity and in use of flavors, to continue elevating the menus in BIGHORN’s seven restaurants. “Our personal attention to Member requests leads us to making every plate unique and special,” says Canyons Steak House Chef de Cuisine Nicholas Stendebach. “We listen to our Members and they take notice! When you are producing over millions of dollars in food and beverage sales per season, you want to make every experience extraordinary.” The Canyons Steak House has been lauded as the best private restaurant in the Coachella Valley. Our full, steady bookings throughout the season prove the ultimate success of the freshest cuisine and finest service. Chef Proper adds, “We make it a point to approach every Member as if they are the #1 person on property. We procure only the best quality product and know everything about it. We know exactly where our Prime-grade meat comes from, what they eat, and how they live. We research and purchase topquality fresh wild seafood. A decade of excellence at BIGHORN with vast experience in the hotel and restaurant industry, Executive Chef Greg Proper has advanced BIGHORN’s culinary program to new heights producing over 350 events per season and managing the kitchens for seven restaurants.

Every day I visit with Members about their meal and ask if they need anything in particular when they dine with us. We will go to the lengths of flying in abalone from Hawaii or Hudson Valley Foie Gras from New York just to complete a memorable evening with friends and family. And the food is only part of it – the entire experience is what really counts. Chef Stendebach adds, “My favorite quote from Chef Greg since the first day we opened has been, ‘Each plate is your best plate; everything on it is perfect. It looks just like the perfect plate that you made right before it. You put it out and the next plate becomes your best.’ ” “What makes BIGHORN special is that we are a family,” describes Chef Stendebach. “When you love to be at a place as much as our Members and staff do, it doesn’t feel like you are at restaurant, but rather at your home entertaining friends and family with an exquisite meal and service. Our staff knows our Members’ individual tastes and preferences, right down to their favorite cocktail, which is usually waiting for them upon arrival.” “I love to paint an experience through the five senses,” continues Chef Stendebach. “Just like a painter, I strive to do that with the food, service, and space. When you see the beautiful view of the Valley beyond and receive first-class service, these things are setting the stage. Then your dish arrives, you see it, smell it, taste it, while hearing the sounds of enjoyment of others with their meals. We have painted a complete work of art, all for your enjoyment.” “As a chef, every one of us desires to challenge our creative juices by producing that euphoric first bite that leaves our guests smiling. We see a lot of empty plates returning to our kitchen and we know that we have succeeded!”

Life’s Best Moments By Theresa Maggio
Photography by Mark Davidson and Pat Lassy Dot and Sam DeKruyf are probably one of the most fun-loving couples you’ll ever want to meet! Their gregarious personalities stem from their incredible work ethic surrounding the family farm, great moral values, and a zest for life that has kept this couple going for over 53 years! The DeKruyf’s come from a long line of dairy farmers who emigrated from Holland to Paramount, California, just 45 minutes from Disneyland. “It gives me a great sense of pride knowing that our farms are fourth generation and that everyone ‘rides for the brand’ instilling quality, values, and focus toward the future,” Sam says. “There is no greater joy than seeing our grandchildren take over the business – every owner makes the farm better than it was before. I made it better than my dad and the kids have already made it better than me. They have expanded to growing raspberries, wine grapes, tomatoes, almonds, and pistachios.” Now with multiple farms in operation supplying top food distributors and the land surrounding it becoming more and more valuable, Sam finds himself growing into a property developer role, which has become a fun and exciting new challenge. His beautiful wife Dot is a familiar face around the desert as she models for top brands. She surprisingly attributes her great figure and vitality to the glass of milk she drinks every day. “There’s nothing better,” she beams. Dot’s first introduction to BIGHORN was through her modeling for St. John at one of the Ladies’ Home Tours put on by BIGHORN Properties. “I just loved the ladies, they were so friendly and real, very different from other communities,” expresses Dot. “I knew we could make some special friends here and we were right!”
94

Dot and Sam purchased their homesite in 2007, with the help of BIGHORN Properties sales associate Jacquie Burns. They built their dream house over the next two years using Prest-Vuksic Architects, builder Steve Ruffolo, interior designer Randy Patton Design, and Wayne Connor & Associates for their landscape design. This dream team created a 7,400 sf haven for all of their family to come and visit while showing off their meaningful collectibles. The couple has skillfully blended Western artifacts with contemporary art to create a true desert contemporary masterpiece. “We love our open concept home,” shares Dot. “Every area is open to the others. Since we spend the most amount of time outside, we took great care in making it a special sanctuary.” In fact, the family loves the outdoors so much that Sam took some of his Western collectibles and created a special village and firepit area so the clan could enjoy their grass roots. The area cleverly designed by Wayne Connor makes the whole family feel as if they have been transported to Knott’s Berry Farm, which is exactly where the pair purchased some of the memorabilia including a handsome cowboy named Slim. “We spend so much time here, making plans for the future, discussing the present, and watching the kids play,” shares Sam. The DeKruyf family comes to visit their BIGHORN home several times a year. So Dot and Sam made an atmosphere for every family member to enjoy every moment – creating memories to last a lifetime. “All the kids are in the family dairy business so they work extremely hard. When they come to BIGHORN they also play hard. I’m so excited to see our nine grandchildren and seven great grandkids for the holidays!” squeals Dot. “We’ll just run down to the church in our golf cart, enjoy the service, and be back up to BIGHORN in no time.”
96
When the family comes, they come in droves, typically 24 to 30 people strong. “So years ago Jared, our Restaurant Manager, started a ‘Dinner with Bobby’ tradition in the Men’s Locker Room at Christmastime,” describes Dot. “With so many of us we needed a special place to have dinner, let the kids hang out, and enjoy each other’s company. Bobby, our Locker Room Manager, is one of the greatest individuals on the planet and having him host our annual dinner makes him an honorary DeKruyf!” Among the events the DeKruyfs enjoy, they also love all of the amenities – especially working out in the gym. “I’m addicted to our spin class,” shares Dot. “We’re also a big take-out family from
The Pour House and we always take the family to the Canyons Steak House when they are here. It’s our special outing!” “We are really excited about the new Clubhouse,” Dot shares. “We are very impressed in the execution of the design and can imagine all the fun our family will have when it is completed.” Sam adds, “It’s just another first-class amenity that R.D. Hubbard has envisioned to take our Club over the top! I love how Hubbard handles the Club, telling us what we are getting instead of all these crazy committees that other clubs have that just end up fighting with each other. Hubbard’s vision has always been true to what our Members’ lifestyle needs and he’s a big reason behind why we are so happy here at BIGHORN. Hubbard and the incredibly talented staff make every day a worthwhile one – boy are we lucky!”
97
Sam can be found at The Vault every day. You’ll find him checking on his two special automotive beauties, revving up their engines and hanging out with friends talking about cars. “The Vault is my favorite thing about BIGHORN! What a spectacular place to spend time. The Vault is so over-the-top. The President Jay Westman just created a place so far beyond our imagination and expectation, which is why it’s been so successful! And the fact that Hubbard and BIGHORN donated the land just proves how amazing this place really is.” One of his babies, a 1958 Chevrolet Impala, is just like one he owned when he was a teenager. Yet it has an even better story on how he received it and how it was restored. “I was at The Pour House enjoying a glass of wine when Abel, the outside service personnel manager, pulled the car up,” Sam beams. “I was so amazed to see a ‘58 in such mint condition that I called my son-in-law Peter Bourna over to come look at it. Memories flooded over me and I was stunned at the level of detail from the bumper to the interior to the old 45 record player spinning tunes. I kept walking round and round the car and noticed the personalized license plate that
said ‘Sam’s ‘58’ and I said, ‘I gotta meet the owner!’ Peter then told me, ‘It’s yours!’ and I doubled over in disbelief. It is one of my most favorite gifts, not only because it resembles my original ’58, but because of all the time and energy it took for him to rebuild it.”
The DeKruyfs also own a 1949 Mercury with a completely restored chop top that has been nicknamed “Lola.” This burgundy-colored “low rider” became the definitive custom car in the ‘50s, especially after James Dean drove one in Rebel Without a Cause, becoming a true American icon.
The ’58 Impala features an all-new body, new chassis, and semi-gullwing rear fins. Its expansive size and the sleek styling of the two-door hard top lent itself to popular trends in the late 1950s. Knowing how much Sam’s original ’58 meant to him, his son-in-law Peter worked alongside some of the greatest restoration crews including RD Performance, C&S Auto & Truck, Burton’s Classics, Custom Painter Pete Santini, artist Steve Stanford, and Corona Customs. The crew brought the machine to life with four-wheel disk brakes, an alternator, air-conditioning, stereo, electronic ignition, and a 409ci engine while still retaining the original 348, two-speed cast iron Powerglide. With a pearl white body, candy green panels, and a green metalflake roof, the Impala roared to life ready for the next generation to appreciate its spectacular design.
A cherry red Cushman scooter graces a third spot in The Vault. “Everyone owned a Cushman scooter growing up,” shares Sam. “Even Hubbard. When the scooter arrived it was amazing to hear how many Members grew up with a Cushman.” Sold often through Sears, Cushman produced engines for farm equipment, then became popular in World War II when the armed forces used them. And why wouldn’t they when it could easily travel 75 miles per gallon and advertised a penny-a-mile operating cost?
“I remember Sam and I driving anywhere we could in that car,” recalls Dot. “To the drive-in movies, over to Hodies for burgers – it’s the best gift Sam could have ever received, especially because it came from family.”
“I can’t thank Hubbard and Vault President Jay Westman enough for creating this one-of-a-kind experience where I can hang with other car lovers who also love BIGHORN as much as I do,” shares Sam. “For Dot and I, BIGHORN has become more than a home. It’s a family you want to spend time with and make lifelong memories with. We’re never leaving!”
The DeKruyf’s 1949 Mercury Coupe is a showstopper with a two-door, full luxury interior, a spark-ignition 4-stroke engine, and 206.8 inch long body.

BIGHORN Members, including Westman, who have bought spaces inside The Vault appreciated that it would draw a rare mix of luxury liners, vintage cruisers, muscle machines, exotic sports cars, and genuine track-ready race cars that span the best eras of history on four wheels – all in one private facility. 1933 Cadillac Chrome Limousine A true classic! Everything is original on this 1933 Cadillac Chrome Limousine parked in The Vault, all except for the tires. This sevenpassenger limo has less than 7,000 miles on it. The story is that Sumner Carson, heir of the Pacific Lumber Company, custom designed the car for his wife, Amelia. He died a year later and his wife vowed to never drive it again. Ten years later, Amelia died and left her estate to her 30 cats. When relatives finally retrieved her estate, the gem was discovered and sold. The 1933 Cadillac had three other owners before Bob Harris purchased it, all who have treated it with care. Only three of these cars exist today and its estimated value is priceless. When judged, this exceptional Caddy consistently scores 96-97 points out of 100. Quite a Blue Ribbon winner!
It’s All in the Family You’ve gotta love when passion for cars runs in the family, especially when it involves a father, daughter, and son who are all Vault Members! All three of them have been Members of BIGHORN for years. In fact, Jim and Claire Gagan were the twelfth Members joining in 1992. Quite often, family members fall in love with the community and the entire family joins not wanting to miss out on the fun! Jim Gagan, a.k.a the “dad” and one of the original investors in BIGHORN, owns the 1970 Dodge Challenger Custom Roadster. This gem was originally a 4-door classic. But when a tree fell on it, the original owner – who always wanted it to be a 2-door – had it restored, making it the only one of its kind. It has a choice 6.1 liter Hemi engine that produces 900 horsepower. It was unanimously voted the World’s Ultimate Mopar-Modified at the Mopars at the Strip in 2011 and was one of 20 rare custom cars invited to the Playboy Mansion. Son Jamie Gagan drives the stunning 1960 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible with 20” chrome wheels and a ZZ4 crate motor putting out 355 horsepower. This brilliantly done Restomod Roadster loves the road and is ready for a long drive along the California coast. Daughter Sarah Gagan owns the stellar 1932 Ford Custom Roadster, “Boydster II.” This is a legendary Chip Foose design and winner of the coveted America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award in 2003. Its prime placement in The Vault captures a lot of attention – not only for its cherry red color but also for its legendary design that instantly transports vistors or fellow Members back to the 1930s’ classic era of automobiles. “Everyone loves The Vault,” exclaims Jim Gagan. “People can’t wait to learn about the cars, their history, and what makes them extremely rare and special.”

Cutting-Edge Technology Photography by Mark Davidson LaFerrari Hybrid Supercar BIGHORN’s avid collectors show off a wide variety of cars, including a stunning LaFerrari Hybrid Supercar. This is truly a very rare automobile as the owner must first own at least 10 Ferraris before getting on the list to purchase the $1.5 million, high-performance supercar. With only 499 of these LaFerraris in production, this one boasts 949 horsepower thanks to a V12 6.3 liter engine combined with an electric KERS unit for extra bursts of power. This red LaFerrari means business! High-Performance Exotics Vault Members and their guests will see a wide variety of vintage and modern vehicles. Check out the extremely sexy 2008 Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR with 617 horsepower for starters. This sports car can achieve 0-60 mpg in 3.6 seconds with a redline speed of 209 mph. Its value? A cool half million dollars. The stunning orange 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS is hard to miss. It’s holding a 500 horsepower engine that revs 0-60 mpg in 3.1 seconds. It actually ran a 00:07:20 second lap time at Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany, turning heads with its impressive speed and bold prowess on the track. Ferrari owners seem to be the most active collectors in The Vault – we have TWO 2015 Ferrari 458 Spiders! Both are candy red and simply beautiful in design, powered by a 562 horsepower V-8 engine. Very few cars can match this mid-engine convertible. Corvette Magazine couldn’t wait to check out the 2016 Callaway Corvette Z06 Supercharged Convertible with an extra special Callaway engine nearing 850 horsepower and traveling 0-60 seconds in 2.8 seconds. Mercedes attempts to lure buyers away from their nemesis Porsche with the 2016 Mercedes Benz AMG GTS. A prime specimen 106
happens to be housed in The Vault. With 503 horsepower, super sleek design, and bright yellow color, one might think they had just witnessed a sun flash with this car cruising up Highway 74. TrackMan 4: The latest in Doppler Radar Ball and Club Tracking Technology The TrackMan 4 is the latest in ground-breaking radar club and ball-tracking technology. Tracking the movement of the clubhead at impact and the flight of the ball through the air, this performanceenhancing data allows you to see what is really happening as you contact the ball. The powerful combination of data, video, and overlay graphics are indispensable features in mapping the golfer’s swing DNA, allowing us to completely understand the relationship between impact and ball flight. TrackMan 4 takes the guess work out of swing analysis and allows you to accurately compare feel versus real while accelerating the learning curve. In the graphic, we can see the inner dynamics of what happened with the impact of this 5-iron shot. On the left, all of the important club factors are shown, including club path, face angle, angle of attack, dynamic loft (loft at impact), and spin loft as well as the ball spin rate and spin axis. These numbers work to produce the lines on the picture featured on the right. The blue line represents the slightly (2.8*) inside-out swing path with a club face angle (2.1* Right) that was fairly square to the path represented by the red line. These two factors work together to produce the purple ball flight line, a slight draw that carried 189 yards. This is only a small, simple sample of what the TrackMan 4 is capable of tracking. From a fitting point of view, the TrackMan 4 can evaluate clubs in a side-by-side comparison that includes distance, dispersion, trajectory, and more. Use the new optimization feature and learn what your optimal launch angle, ball speed, height, spin rate, spin loft, and carry distance are for each club, especially the driver. This data can also be used to adjust the lofts and lies of your clubs and to address any distance gaps you might have within your set of irons.
Science and Motion PuttLab Use the most accurate putting training and diagnostic system on the market. The latest version of the Science and Motion PuttLab allows us to measure up to 28 variables in your putting stroke to within 0.1* or 1/20th of an inch. Although this may seem like a lot of information, this analysis helps simplify changes by revealing the true cause of errant or inconsistent putting and allows you to develop and see improvements with immediate feedback. Discover your individual strengths and weaknesses for a better, more efficient, and more consistent putting stroke. Did you know that over 90% of all golfers are using putters that don’t fit them properly? Have you ever wondered if you are using the right putter, if it has the correct amount of loft, or if you are launching your putts at the optimal angle? Would you like to make more putts? Using the Science and Motion comparison tool, we can compare putters, fit you for the proper putter including head design, loft, lie angle, grip size, and putter length. Why guess when you can assess? Make more putts today and learn to putt more consistently. V1 HD Pro The V1 HD Pro four-camera digital video system allows golfers to view their swings from up to four angles at the same time. A greater understanding of what is happening during the swing can lead to an accelerated learning curve. Seeing and feeling the correct swing motion helps students make lasting changes that lead to greater consistency and better ball striking. Swing files can be stored for comparison and improvement tracking as well as compared to Tour Professionals. How can all of this technology help you improve your game? Armed with the proper information gleaned from technology like the TrackMan 4,V1 and Science and Motion PuttLab, My team and I are able to show you the actual three-dimensional perspective of impact in golf with all clubs from driver to putter.
