Shammi Kapoor was born Shamsher aj Kapoor on the 21st October 1931 in Bombay, Maharasthra, India. Standing at six foot tall Shammi Kapoor was India’s answer to America’s Elvis, The King as popularly referred to. Shammi was the Prince of the Indian silver screen, charming hearts in his flamboyant playboy roles. He did his Matric at New Era School and proceeded briefly to Ruia College, India. He was the son of Thespian actor Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarni Devi nee Mehra and brother to Ranbirraj (Raj) Kapoor and Balbirraj (Shashi) both very successful Indian actors. He had one sister Urmila Sial.

Shammi married Geeta Bali, two years his senior, real name, Harkirtan Kaur, of Amritsar, Punjab, in 1955.Geeta was already an established actress, at the time and Shammi was struggling as an actor. They had two children, Aditya born in 1956 and Kanchan born at the height of Shammi Kapoor’s career, in 1961. Geeta died in 1965, this was a very trying time for the young budding actor who was at the prime of his career but Shammi came through the period with his family and children by his side to further put a mark on his career. In 1969 he married his current wife Neila, ten years his junior. She was once said “when I fist saw him he was 19 and I was nine”. Shammi started his career at his father's Prithvi Theatres as a junior artiste in 1948 earning Rs. 50.00 monthly and worked at the theatre till 1952 his last pay check being Rs. 300.00. His film debut as a hero was with Kardar Film Company, in the film Jeevan Jyoti directed by Mahesh Kaul opposite Chand Usmani as his first heroine. Between 1952 and 1955 he starred in Laila Majnu with Nutan, Thokar with Shyama which some inner circles claim was his first debut appearance. These sober roles, did not suit him well, this was a young talent, handsome, charming and full of life who was subjected to some serious roles, and this made him struggle. It was not until when Filmistans’s Nasir Hussain stared him in Tumsa Nahin Dekha opposite Ameeta and Dil Deke Dekho opposite the charming beauty Asha Parekh did Shammi Kapoor click. A star was born, India’s own Elvis came of age with his light hearted playboy image, and Shammi cemented his name on the silver screen. He chose the voice of legendary singer Mohammed Rafi, a close friend and the partnership worked superbly. With the release of Junglee in 1961, his first colour film that featured the famous, “Yahooo” song and a blessing of a new baby girl, Kanchan, Shammi was riding on a different level. He established himself as a Star. In fact it was not Mohammed Rafi who shouted Yahoo in the song but a certain Prayag

Raj. This song was late to become Shammi’s trade mark and Rafi’s must sing song in his live performances. The days of playing second fiddle roles opposite heroines like Madhubala as he did in Rail Ka Dibba in 1953 were over, Shammi was paired with new heroines of which three of his co stars became big stars, Asha Parekh, Saira Banu and Sharmila Tagore. Some of his Block Busters at the Box Office between 1960 and 1964 were Professor, China Town, Char Dil Char Rahen, Kashmir Ki Kali, Bluff Master Janwar, and Raj Kumar. He once said that working with Asha, Sharmila and Rajshree was easy as they were very flexible and charming. He and Asha were paired in four films, the most successful at the box office being Teesri Manzil, a murder mystery that had more rock and roll than Elvis Presley’s Jailhouse Rock. The movie was released in 1966. Tragedy stuck the Kapoor household and clan, when during the filming of Teesri Manzil Shammi’s wife Geeta Bali was taken ill and died, leaving him with two small children. This eventually led to a failed romance with his co star Mumtaz of Brahmchari, released in 1968. In 1969, he married the Queen of Bhavnagar, Neila Devi, his current wife. Soon he stated putting on weight and his career as the dashing, dancing, romantic hero faded away giving way in the early seventies to a hefty Shammi Kapoor in new supporting roles. Andaz released in 1971 was his last big hit as a romantic hero, and by now a new star was born, Rajesh Khanna.
He started playing supporting roles and played Saira Banu’s father, his former leading lady in Junglee, in 191 and Bluff Master in 1964. This was in Zameer in 1975. In 1974 he ventured into another field in the movie industry, Film Direction, he directed Manoranjan an adaptation of a French play, Irma La Douce (also made as a comedy by Billy Wilder in 1962). The film stared Sanjeev Kumar and Zeenat Aman and Shammi played a supporting role. This was followed with Bandalbaaz in 1997 with Rajesh Khanna and Sulakshna Pandit but neither were a success. This newly acclaimed stature of supporting actor continued in the 80’s and 90’s and in 1982 was honoured with the Best Supporting Actor Award at the Filmfare Awards for the film Vidhaata.

He then tried his luck in a video entertainment magazine “Shammi Kapoor presents Manoranjan”, but had to stop publication as he felt many people were doing the same thing. Some recent releases or may we call them the new generation releases have been, Heer Ranjha, Khule Aam, Lakshman Rekha, Hum Shakal, Tehelka, Chamatkar, Heer Ranjha, Gardish, Pyar Ka Rog, Megha, Dosti Ki Saugandh, Aaja Meri Jaan a Prem Granth which is directed by my brother late Raj Kapoor's youngest son, Rajiv Kapoor. He has also been involved in some Television Drama Series including Chattaan that featured on Zee TV. He has starred with Bobby Deol and Ashwarya Rai in Aur Pyar Ho Gaya, and a cameo role in Kareeb with Bobby Deol. He has played Salman Khan’s grandfather in Jaanam Samjha Karo. He slowly cut down on his movie career in the late 90’s through to the 2000 and in 2006 he did his last film the much delayed film Sandwich aged 75.
Shammi Kapoor spends a lot of time on the internet surfing; it’s become his hobby and passion. He was founder and chairman of the Internet Users Community of India (IUCI) and is instrumental in setting up of the Ethical Hackers Association. On his 75th Birthday celebration, he told interviewers that he attends Dialysis three times a week but does not feel depressed instead blessed and grateful that God has given him so much.
At 78 Shammi still baffles his critics and admirers with rare appearances at celebrity presentations and philanthropic events.

championships. He had his first taste of the entertainment industry when he was 10; his father took him to an award presentation celebrating the 1998 FIFA world cup at the prestigious Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya. Soon he was dragged by his father to join him on the Breakfast Show on main stream JUNIOR ON AIR at 10 Radio during school holidays and weekends. This was much to the reluctance of his mother who believed that he was still very young for such a show and it was too early a start for him, as he had to leave home at 4am to be at the station before 5am for live transmission. Junior played a second fiddle On Air as he was not given much to do. Fate had a different story for Junior, as one morning his father had travelled to another city and the coach was delayed on the Highway(motorway) so Junior had no alternative but to go On Air and kick start the Breakfast Show assisted by the
programme producer. He managed for almost an hour before his father’s arrival, and was an instant liking of the younger audience. Soon he featured more prominently on the Show and started getting invitees for appearances not as a second act but as co-host of events.
This was the beginning of ushered into public appearances and shows, the biggest being an all star Beach Party, organized on World Aids Day, to create awareness of the Aids Pandemic in the Tourist Resort, The Reef Hotel, Mombasa, Kenya. This was a trying test for Junior as he co hosted with other emcees not his usual partner, his father. He moved on to the U.K. and continued his education at the King Edmund’s School, Yate, Bristol, where he carried on with his music lessons. Once again playing his favourite, Take Five to a great audience during a school function. He developed a strong mentorstudent relationship with the school’s deputy headmaster, Allan Parris. In 2004 he once again teamed up with his father to present the weekend Breakfast special for a community Radio, Comm. FM in Bristol. It was an exciting time but not as big an audience as they were both used ON AIR COMM. FM

Radio Ramadhan was an instant hit, informing, educating and entertaining the community with a difference, as Junior puts it, “ The difference is that we are different from all the other Radio Ramadhans in the UK as we are diverse in our programming yet appealing to all communities and faiths.” After completing his GCSC’s at King Edmund, where he achieved very good grades, Junior joined the Filton College for higher education. At Filton he was in the forefront of the Student Union activities and organized a number of events, one being an annual Fasting Day of students during the month of Ramadhan of which proceeds went for charity. He plays basketball, Rugby regularly. He played cricket for the Hambrook Youth, but Junior & Adrian Mantle of Avon Fire & Rescue
due to a tight schedule and his educational commitments he had to give it up.
He is a trained Life Guard at the Yate Leisure Centre and runs his own mobile Disco unit, Junior’s Disco. He was awarded the Best Male Broadcaster at Radio Ramadhan for the last 5 years. Junior has been instrumental in setting up Radio Mast FM studios, organizing Road Shows for the Station, raising money for charity. He assisted in Funds Drive for the South Asia Earth Quake victims in 2005, Andalusia Academy Bristol, Rahma Mercy Group in aid of orphans & widows of Kosovo & Albania, Families Relief Group, in aid of the displaced in Palestine & Sri Lanka and Teenage Cancer Research project.

Upcoming Talent
Niks Vaja Niks Vaja is a talented Actor, but where has he come from and where is he going? Niks was born in Northampton, UK in May 1984. He started dancing at the tender age of eight and took part in many competitions as well as stage shows. Between the ages of twelve to fifteen Niks was sent to a boarding school in India where he was taught acting and dancing. On returning to the UK Niks put his full dedication on completing school and then continuing onto higher education at Sheffield Hallam University. Whilst at university Niks spent his spare time modelling and took part in many catwalk shows, he soon realised how much he loved being in the limelight. After completing his studies Niks took the decision to further his career prospects and is now perusing a career in acting. His first step towards this was joining a Bollywood Dance/Acting school where he actively takes part in shows and films. Niks has taken part in many films both in the production line and as an actor. This makes him very adaptable as he understands what goes into the production not just in the acting. Some of the
productions he has taken part in are: Malaya Forgotten War, The Reunion, Veer (Production) and London Dreams (Production). Tom Newman spotted talent in Niks and has given him the most crucial part of his film Vermillion. Niks plays the protagonist role of a gangster. The role is very intense and puts Niks in the position of playing someone who is a normal middle aged man induced by old friends into the underworld of crime. He must act out an unstable minded character who becomes obsessed with engaging in violence. Whilst interviewing Niks it became apparent that he puts a lot of effort into his career and it means a lot to him. „I always fulfil any role to the best of my ability.‟ Niks short-term goals are to start working on films with bigger scope. He thrives on challenges and wants to be challenged by taking on different roles. Niks long-term goals are to work alongside major actors and learn from them as much as possible, he wants to settle down and provide for his family and give them a life he could not have when he was younger. He wants to be able to inspire people with dreams, that with a little bit of determination they can achieve. „Anything is possible, so reach for the impossible.‟ ……….

Indian fashion varies, from village to village, city to city. Indian fashion is rich in tradition, vibrant colours and prepossessing. The bold colours created by the inventive drapes of textiles catch the eye like no other contemporary clothing. Indian Fashion - ancient fashion in India The ancient fashion garments in India were generally not stitched though sewing was known to Indians. As they left the loom most clothes were ready to wear, the traditional Indian Dhoti, the scarf for uttaiya or the popular Turban are still a visible feature in India and continue to be part of Indian fashion. The Sari combined with the Stanpatta forms the basic ensemble, again these garments need not be stitched, as the Sari or Dhoti is wrapped from the hips and the Stanpatta is simply fastened to cover the top body and is tied with a knot at the back. This forms the beauty of Indian dressing, so elegant and unique. The Sari is won covering both legs or in the alternative with one end passing between the legs and tucked at the back, this style is still prevalent in large areas of India and even on the Bollywood screens. The Sari remains the traditional, ceremonial and most elegant fashion out of India, the garment is not cut or tailored to a particular size yet when won it looks like it’s a made to measure outfit. It is the ultimate feminine attire that is proving very popular in the western world. The tightly fitted blouse

won under the Sari is known as the Choli. This evolved around the 10th century AD and the fist as we mentioned earlier were only covering the front and tied at the back, leaving the back bare. Many women even today wear the Sari in that fashion. The manner of wearing the Sari and its colours are indicative of the status, age, occupation, or even the region a woman hails from.

The other popular attire of women out of the Indian Sub Continent is the Salwar-Kameez. This Indian dress that originated from the Kashmir and Punjab region has evolved as a comfortable and very respectable Indian Garment. The Salwar-Kameez is now popularly internationally and used as the most convenient traditional Indian dressing in the entire region including Pakistan and Bangla Desh. The Salwars are pyjama like trousers worn the waist down, drawn tightly at the waist and ankles, though the fashion icons from the movie industry have even created a flare and baggy versions. Over these Salwars women wear a long loose tunic known as Kameez. Some women prefer to wear the Churidar instead of the Salwars; this is similar to a Salwar except that it is tightly fitting at the Hips, thighs and ankles. These are worn with a mandarin or collarless tunic called a Kurta. Jewellery in Indian fashion play great role in women dressing. Gold ornaments are usually worn against the skin at all times. In Indian tradition and dressing, Gold metal is believed to have purifying powers for anything it touches. Gold and other metal ornaments often won with either precious or semi precious gems and beads are popular with both men and women in Indian culture. Traditionally ornaments had economic significance in old India and a bride’s ornaments wee her lifetime financial security.
Ear Rings another must for Indian dressing, is in form of rings, studs or long decorative jewels. Traditionally a girl’s ears were pierced before her first birthday. Finger rings, toe rings and anklets are today worn by all women thus making the ring a common adornment and no longer considered a symbol of Indian
The nose pin more common than a nose ring is a symbol of purity and marriage though in this age and time all girls wear them as a fashion. Necklaces form a great part of Indian fashion made from materials ranging from glass to beads, gold to diamonds. One special necklace that is worth mentioning is the Mangalsutra; this is worn only by married women. A Mangalsutra is equivalent to a western wedding ring. A woman will wear it during him wedding ceremony and only take it off when he spouse passé on. Bangles are worn on the wrist and are believed to be protective and women wore them as symbolic guards over their husband, made with Gold, Silver, Brass glass or even wood. Bangles today are won by women of all ages.

marriage. However toe rings and anklets are still worn by married women. Ornaments of the feet are usually made of silver as Gold being a purity metal was not supposed to be worn on the feet; this privilege was only of the Royalties. Besides these ornaments is the Mangatika or Tikli, an ornament worn at top of the forehead in the parting of the hair, is a small pendant on the end of a chain that is clasped to the hair. This too was originally worn as a symbol of marriage but today is commonly won by all women. Kajal commonly known as eyeliner is another significant part of Indian beauty. From a time when a child is six days old, its mother applies Kajal and a black dot on the forehead to mar the child’s beauty thus protecting the child from evil. Finally is the Sindoor, a dot on the forehead indicating a woman status as married. It is applied as part of a wedding ceremony. Looking back at the Indian fashion from top to toe one is always fascinated by the artistic beauty of the Indian fashion, vibrant, colourful, elegant, unique and though changing with the sign of the times, it still, maintains that original Indian classic garments and jewellery. In our next edition we will feature fashion houses and trends that have put Indian fashion on the world map. Till then.....ciao
