Community leadership
is Daniel’s reason.
Daniel is a rising leader in his community and shows no signs of slowing down. A senior at High School for Economics and Finance in Manhattan, he’s preparing a speech to promote his run for student body president. The nerves kick in, so he calls his mentor, Keith, for a pep talk. A week later, Daniel will make another call to Keith – this time to share the news that he won the election. Keith has been Daniel’s Big for three years. He knows how hard Daniel has worked to get here: leading school clubs, achieving high scores on his SATs, getting selected for competitive programs and internships, and applying to colleges. And Keith has been by Daniel’s side, every step of the way. This election is not the first time Daniel has taken initiative to represent his fellow students. During his junior year — one that can be stressful for teens as they begin the college prep process — Daniel had concerns about the amount of homework assigned, particularly to students who took on the additional responsibility of caring for siblings after school. He fought for change as junior class president. Keith was behind the scenes through it all, providing guidance and even sending Daniel a coloring book to relieve stress when things sometimes seemed overwhelming. But, it was a trip to Ecuador last summer, through a program called Global Glimpse, that really inspired Daniel to become a leader in his community. He traveled to Ecuador for three weeks to meet with community leaders, perform community service, spend time with the locals, and learn about their culture and way of life. To take the financial burden off of his family, Daniel chose to fundraise the $3,000 necessary for the trip.
“Without Keith and his assistance and motivating words, I would never have pursued the Global Glimpse program. He is the Big that brings up my levels of self confidence.”

Succeeding in business
is Sandra’s reason.
On any given day, Sandra is juggling enough responsibilities to keep five people busy. She manages a team of underwriters at the insurance company where she works. She sits on the board of a foundation that helps send underprivileged teenagers to school. She is the founder and CFO of a consulting group that trains companies and institutions on diversity and inclusion in the workplace. She recently completed her MBA while planning her wedding!
Alumni Little Sister Sandra
10
It’s a lot — but Sandra pours enthusiasm into every task, simply because she is living her dream. Sometimes she pauses to glance at the life she has built and feels tremendous pride and gratitude for a few key people who inspired and guided her along the way. Sandra was in junior high school when she met her Big, Cathy, a businesswoman in New York City. She had never met a professional woman before, and the more Cathy showed her the business world, the more Sandra knew this was what she wanted to become. After a few years of mentorship with Cathy, Sandra received a scholarship to go to boarding school in Massachusetts and then enrolled in Hamilton College. During her eight years away from the city, she met new people and gained exposure to new paths. When she returned to New York, she decided to give back to BBBS of NYC by becoming co-chair of the Latino Bigs affinity group. She held this position from 2012-2014, ensuring Latino Littles had access to positive adult role models. After getting her MBA from Fordham University, Sandra quickly began climbing the ranks of the business world. She says one of the best things BBBS of NYC gave her was exposure — to cultures she hadn’t known before, to women in the workplace, to business, and to adults outside of her family or neighborhood.
“I was able to go from being a Little in the program and receiving scholarships, to being an established professional in my field and a board member of a foundation where I’m able to provide scholarships to other students.”
“
It’s a nice stage of life to be in, to be able to finally give back some of the opportunities that were given to me. - Alumni Little Sister Sandra

Alumni Little Sister Michelle
“ 12
Barbara was extroverted and confident — all of the things that I wasn’t. She took care of me and became my person. She always stood by me. - Alumni Little Sister Michelle
”
Giving back
is Michelle’s reason.
Michelle was experiencing one of the darkest periods of her life when she was matched with her Big, Barbara, who gave her the love and support she needed to turn her life around. Michelle was 16 when she was placed in a group home to escape an abusive stepfather. At the home, she encountered more trauma, living with girls who were violent and aggressive. It was then that Michelle became deeply depressed. Michelle was soon assigned a therapist, who referred her to BBBS of NYC’s mentoring program, where Michelle met Barbara.
Barbara became Michelle’s staunchest advocate. She provided a refuge from the sadness and loneliness Michelle felt at the group home and loved Michelle without judgment or conditions. With Barbara’s guidance and support, Michelle became more confident and hopeful, focusing on school. She eventually became the first person in the history of the group home to graduate from high school and pursue higher education. When considering her major, Michelle thought back to the people who had the most positive impact on her life. In the years that followed, she earned a bachelor’s in social work from SUNY Stony Brook and a master’s in social work from NYU. After counseling children who were victims of abuse for several years, she decided that she wanted to make a difference on a larger scale and went back to school for her law degree. Now a seasoned lawyer in Florida, Michelle advocates for victims of abuse. But she has never lost ties to New York City or to BBBS. She often returns to speak at group homes for children, hoping to give them the same hope for their future that Barbara — and BBBS of NYC — gave her. And, of course, she has continued to stay in touch with Barbara, her lifelong Big Sister.

Letter from our
Executive Leadership Every day, we welcome new Littles into our community with the hopes of igniting their potential. This compassion and commitment empowered us to widen our reach and deepen our impact in 2018. Still, we have our eye on the future, as we’re introducing a series of innovative programs that expand our focus, enrich our impact, and establish more young leaders. Bigs in Blue creates mentorship opportunities between NYC officers from local precincts and underserved middle school students, cultivating positive conversations and creating change. Big Pride connects children in the LGBTQ+ community with thoughtful mentorship. Our partner organizations support LGBTQ+ youth and provide services such as counseling, drop-in sessions, and group discussions. College Success advises Littles on course enrollment, time management, career readiness, and more – building leadership skills and empowering participants to thrive on campus. We’re honored to represent an organization that turns passion into action – and turns Littles into leaders. A heartfelt thank you to our donors, whose generosity brings our work to life. With your continued support, we’ll build the next generation of our city’s leaders together.
