Governor’s Newsletter District A-12 District Governor Randy Hargrave Governor’s Message As Nancy and I travelled throughout the District we are truly amazed at the service that our Lions, Lioness and Leos clubs are providing to their communities and beyond. Whether our clubs are large or small, each of our clubs are working hard within their communities. Our clubs have outdone themselves in the first three quarters of our 101st year of Lionism. Christmas saw us busy manning Salvation Army kettles, helping at local food banks, or providing a festive meal on Christmas Day. Our Lions didn't stop making an impact with the beginning of the New Year, you are out there flipping pancakes, building and maintaining ice rinks, helping at or organizing winter festivals. Many others step up to help the less fortunate at strategic times like Christmas, but we as Lions can be proud of the fact we serve others all year long. As we roll into spring, I know our members and clubs will be ramping up their service in their communities.

Monarch Chevron Awards

Monarch Chevron Awards honour members for their dedication to community service as a Lion. DG Randy Hargrave has handed out 85 of these awards this year. Pictured above DG Randy presents the Award to Lion Jerry Pauley, Innisfil Lions Club for 45 years of service. Also in the photo is Innisfil Lions Club President William Paul.

I hope to see all of you at the Lions Learning Day and the A-12 District Convention (April 14 & 15). The learning day is a great opportunity to become better Lions, resulting in the ability to provide more service for greater impact to our communities. The convention is a chance to celebrate our service to our communities. Also, the convention allows us to renew friendships with our Lions family. Our guest speaker is Past International Director Douglas Alexander from New York City. He comes highly recommended, some say he is probably the best speaker in all of Lionism. New to the convention, we will be holding a Lion Stan Stillar of Stephenson District Lions Club has been a service activity. Arrangements have been made dedicated Lion for 45 years. DG Randy Hargrave presents Lion with Diabetes Canada to hold a “Fill A Truck” Stan with the Monarch Chevron Award. event. Bring and donate your gently used clothing and small household items to Diabetes Canada to help raise funds to replace the A-12 sleeping cabin at Camp Huronda. A few weeks later, after the convention and Lions Learning Day, our 5th Day of Service is being held on Saturday May 5, 2018. This is a day when all our clubs put aside fundraising and just concentrate on a service event that will help their communities. The Day of Service hopefully will remind each Lion why “WE SERVE”. Thank you for the privilege of being your District Governor, the first nine months have flown by. It is an honour to be associated with each one of you. We thank you for the warmth and hospitality extended to us on our visits. Looking forward to seeing all of you at the convention.

Lion Randy Hargrave

The Chevron Award Program recognizes Lions for their long-term service, beginning at 10 years and continuing in five year increments until 75 years of service.

Issue No. 5 Lions Clubs International District A-12 Effective Speaking Contest PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST The contest is to provide an opportunity for competitive effective speaking and to stimulate selfexpression and independent thinking among students. The Lions Clubs of District A-12, by participating in this contest, afford students in their area a chance to participate in a province wide Effective Speaking Contest, held in both the English and French languages. A Contestant attending the Region Effective Speaking Contest must be accompanied by a Lions member of the Club which they represent and a parent and/or guardian. The sponsoring Lions Clubs shall be responsible for paying expenses of authorized contestants. Preliminary (Schools, etc), ,Lions Clubs and Lioness Clubs may organize a Speaking Contest for students in schools, home schools and Youth Organizations based on the rules outlined. The winners in these categories are eligible to compete at the Club, Zone, Region or District Contests. Effective Speaking History The first Effective Speaking program was started in 1947 but it began with a motion to set up a committee to promote the activity, in 1944, in Chicago. The Chairman, Dr. Lennox was an International Director and he sent out a letter to all the Clubs in 1945. By 1946, the committeehad prepared the Rules and Regulations booklet to guide the Clubs in the future. It was decided that there would be a first prize for the best boy and girl in English language. The winners would have their speeches broadcast on radio across Canada. District Governor Stan Darling promoted the program at this time. In 1952, the program was expanded to include both the English and French language. At this time, Multiple District “A” included Clubs in Ontario, Quebec and Labrador. In 1995, the program went unisex and was divided into Intermediate and Senior in both languages. In 1998, the Junior division was added in both languages. This is the largest speaking contest in Canada in either language. In 2004, the three divisions were changed fromages to grades for the competition.

Gravenhurst Lions Club

The Gravenhurst Lions Club was presented with a Club Excellence Award. This prestigious award is given to clubs by Lions Clubs International that grow membership, develop leaders and increase our service impact.

Why attend the Convention? The stock answer to this question is that we are obligated to hold an annual meeting in order to vote on any issues regarding the District Constitution and By-laws. We elect our Cabinet Officers for the coming Lions’ year. What else Happens? The convention experience goes much deeper into the spirit of Lionism than just voting on issues and politics. While the ‘convention’ does not officially get underway until late Saturday afternoon, many of us will be arriving on Friday afternoon to set up for the two events. At $118.00 all in for a room with two queen beds, why not arrive on Friday and stay over- even if you’re only attending the Learning component? Your candidates for next year’s offices and most of the current Cabinet will be there, and there will be informal get togethers hosted in some of the guest rooms. Many of the problems of the District and indeed the world are certain to be resolved in the wee hours of Saturday morning. The Saturday afternoon opening ceremonies recognize our Lions that have served our clubs at the Cabinet and District Chairs positions. Our International Guest will be introduced, and is sure to inspire us with his/her remarks. The candidates for the District Offices will be presented, and nominations from the floor entertained (if required to complete the slate). This ceremony alone is well worth the $30.00 convention registration fee so you might consider staying on after the Learning component before heading home. The meeting will break for a short time to affect any needed ‘attitude adjustment’ and then reconvene at the Alpine ballroom for the plated Gala dinner. Traditionally a ‘semi-formal’ affair, we only ask that there be no ‘blue jeans’. Not into a ‘gala’ dinner? Just head down the hall to the Horseshoe Bar and Grill – excellent pub fare and selection of beverages. Following dinner, the ball room will host a dance featuring the band ‘Memphis Mudd’. These are local musicians featuring cross-over rock and country tunes sure to get things moving. Look them up on facebook and Youtube. After the dance the night will just be getting started. Once again there will be informal get togethers hosted in some of the guest rooms. This is the highlight of convention for many Lions. The fellowship and free exchange of ideas and enthusiasm is sure to remind you of the reasons you joined and belong to our service organization. Sunday morning will get underway bright and early with delegate certification and ballot casting. The District will honour our deceased Lions with a Memorial ceremony that is a moving tribute to our friends that have gone on to higher service since last convention. Prior to the closing luncheon, there will be an information session featuring our International guest. The results of the silent auction will be announced, and other information for the good of Lionism will be shared. The luncheon will be an opportunity for the Governor to make any special recognition presentations. The final ceremony will be the ‘Passing of the Gavel’ – this unique ritual has to be witnessed to be appreciated. OK - Sounds Interesting – What’s it going to Cost? Basic registration to attend on Saturday for the opening ceremony and Sunday’s voting and Memorial is $30.00. To attend on Sunday for delegate certification and voting is only $15.00. From there, the rooms are $118.00 per night all in. The Gala dinner and dance is $65.00, and the luncheon is $35.00. Add in a breakfast or two and some incidentals- for Friday thru to Sunday you could be looking at about $450.00 for a full feature weekend at a destination resort. Registration – Register online at the District web site, or send in the form with your cheque. E transfers can be sent to orolionbob123@sympatico.ca for deposit to the District convention account. No credit cards please.

January 10 · Thank you Rebbeca Truax & Christine Baguley for joining us last night, representing and sharing updates on the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre Hearts & Minds Campaign, in particular The Child and Youth Mental Health Inpatient Unit which opened Dec 20th. A remarkable milestone in our region and one service that families in crisis can access in the time of need! And the Advanced Cardiac Care Unit, now open for business treating the first Angiogram patient yesterday … coincidentally he was from Springwater. Rebbeca mentioned, it will be a ramp up to the full blown cardiac care but they are working towards that goal with a great team of Cardiac specialists on board. Thanks for taking the time to share this fantastic news with us , much needed care -now closer to home . #TeamRVH #RVHFoundation

(Lion Jay Lethbridge: “Fantastic presentation”)

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Pictured above a small but mighty bunch of Port Carling Lions doing some roadside clean up. It always amazes how many empty coffee cups, beer cans and other take-out containers we pick up every spring! Please let us all do our part and keep our beautiful communities clean. Roadside Clean Up is coming up quickly for 2018.. Well done, Port Carling Lions, keep up the good work!
