INSELHÜPFEN ISL ANDHOPPING Am Anfang unserer Zeit hätten wir uns nicht erträumen können, einmal so weit zu kommen, da zu stehen, wo wir gerade sind und auf 20 Jahre Firmengeschichte zurückzublicken.

At the beginning of our journey we could not have dreamed of coming this far and to be able to look back on 20 years of company history!

Nun dürfen wir tatsächlich sagen: Inselhüpfen hat Tradition! Wir haben Höhen und Tiefen, Tops und Flops erlebt, aber eines ist uns geblieben: Unzählige begeisterte Inselhüpfer, und der größte Teil davon hüpft jedes Jahr weiter. 2.700 Charterwochen mit zahlreichen Motorseglern und über 60 Partnerschaften weltweit.

We are now able to say: Islandhopping is a tradition! We have experienced ups and downs, tops and flops, but one thing has always remained: countless enthusiastic Islandhoppers, most of whom return every year. 2,700 charter weeks on board numerous motor sailors and over 60 partnerships worldwide.

Und doch begann alles einmal mit 2 x 30 Gästen auf dem Motorsegler Kneža im Jahre 1998, als wir die Teilnehmer noch in Stuttgart und München mit ihren privaten Rädern einsammelten und einem Abenteuer in Kroatien entgegensteuerten. Ein Abenteuer für zwei Studenten, die Flausen im Kopf hatten und Urlaub einfach mal anders definierten. Und weil es so schön war, haben wir es im darauffolgenden Jahr wiederholt, und anschließend nochmal und nochmal und jedes Mal dachten wir, die Grenze des Machbaren sei erreicht. Dann kam ein weiterer Kapitän mit einem tollen Motorsegler zu uns. Und siehe da: wir hatten wieder Platz für weitere Gäste.

Yet it all started with two groups of 30 guests on the Croatian vessel, Kneža. In 1998 when I picked up my fellow travelers in Stuttgart and Munich with their private bikes and headed to the Adriatic for an adventure holiday in Croatia. An adventure for two students with big ideas who wanted to redefine the holiday experience. Due to the great response and the satisfaction of the first guests, we repeated it in the following year, and then again and again, and every time we thought the limit of what was possible had been reached until yet another captain with a great motor sailor would come along. Lo and behold, we suddenly had space for more guests.

Irgendwann gelangten wir an einen Punkt, an dem es nicht mehr alleine weiterging, an dem wir Mitstreiter suchten, die die Inselhüpfen-Idee genau so toll fanden. So entstanden über Jahre hinweg immer größere organisatorische Strukturen und eine ausgefeilte, gut funktionierende Logistik. Heute ernährt Inselhüpfen über 70 Familien, Paare und Singles. Dank ihnen sowie unseren vielen Partnern wie auch allen unseren Gästen ist das Inselhüpfen ein Traum, der tagtäglich Wirklichkeit wird. Gerne noch einmal 20 Jahre!

At some point we reached a stage where we didn’t want to continue alone, where we were looking for allies, people who were inspired and amazed by the idea of Islandhopping. Over the years, more and more structural organization and sophisticated, well-functioning logistics have emerged. Today, Islandhopping feeds over 70 families, couples and singles. It is thanks to them, the support of our international partners as well as our guests for making the Islandhopping dream become a daily reality. I look forward to the next 20 years!

1998

Mit dem ADFC Baden-Württemberg und den beiden fahrradbegeisterten Studenten Klaus und Peter geht es das erste Mal in die kroatische Kvarner Bucht, um dort auf dem Motorsegler Kneža die ersten beiden Rad- und Schiffreisen mit insgesamt 60 Gästen durchzuführen. Das Inselhüpfen ist geboren (siehe Seite 6). Ein Jahr später gründen Klaus Schenk und Peter Eich die Radurlaub Zeitreisen GmbH und erweitern das Inselhüpfen-Programm um eine Reise in Dalmatien.

Together with the ADFC and two cycle-enthusiastic students, Klaus and Peter, the very first adventure to the Kvarner bay, Croatia, began on board the motor yacht, Kneža, together with 60 anticipating guests. The foundations for Islandhopping were laid (see page 6). One year later, Klaus Schenk and Peter Eich, founded Radurlaub Zeitreisen GmbH and expanded the Islandhopping program with a trip to the Dalmatian Islands.

Die erste MTB Reise in der Kvarner Bucht findet statt. Ein wahr gewordener Traum, der sich in der Zukunft zu einem vielversprechenden Produkt entwickeln wird (siehe Seite 32). The first MTB journey in the Kvarner Bay takes place. A dream comes to life, paving the road for a promising future (see page 32).

Das erste Inselhüpfen-Reiseleiter Treffen findet in Istrien/Kroatien statt. Das Team besteht aus 12 Guides, 2007 sind es bereits 22 und heute ist keines unserer Schiffe groß genug, um alle Guides beim jährlichen Reiseleitertreffen unterzubringen.

The first Islandhopping tour guide seminar takes place in Istria/Croatia. The team consists of 12 guides, in 2007 it grows to 22 and today none of our ships are large enough to accommodate all guides at once for our annual tour guide workshop.

In vielen deutsch- und englischsprachigen Ländern gibt es mittlerweile Vertriebspartner, die unsere Touren im Programm haben. Stetiges Wachstum macht den Abschied von unserem lieb gewonnenen Büro in der Mainaustraße erforderlich.

We now work in cooperation with several partners in many German and English speaking countries, who are willing to introduce our tours into their portfolio. Steady growth makes it necessary to leave our dear office in the Mainaustraße, Constance. ISLANDHOPPING 5

ie Geburtsstunde unserer Firma ist von vielen glücklichen Zufällen geprägt. Klaus Schenk, heutiger Geschäftsführer, und Peter Eich, damaliger Mitgründer, trafen sich als Radreiseleiter bei Kögel Touristik in Radolfzell und planten eine Reise mit dem ADFC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrradclub Baden-Württemberg). Die Broschüre einer kroatischen Motorsegelflotte lag zufällig schon seit 1995 auf dem Papierstapel des Geschäftsführers, aber die Gelegenheit sie zu gebrauchen eröffnete sich erst drei Jahre später mit den ambitionierten Radlern des Fahrradclubs. Da Schenk und Eich ihren ersten Gästen etwas Besonderes bieten wollten, entschieden sie sich, einen Segler dieser Flotte für eine Woche zu chartern.

Managing director, Klaus Schenk and co-founder, Peter Eich, met as colleagues at Kögel Touristik in Radolfzell and worked together on developing a tour for the ADFC (German Cyclist’s Association). The brochure of a Croatian motor boat fleet had occupied a space on Schenk’s desk since 1995, but the opportunity to make use of it presented itself only three years later with the support of the ambitious bicycle club cyclists. Schenk and Eich were determined to offer their first guests something extraordinary and decided to charter one of the fleet’s ships as accommodation for a week.

Mit circa 30 Leuten und privaten Fahrrädern im Gepäck ging es am 4. September 1998 mit gemietetem Reisebus und für 980 DM pro Person in die kroatische Kvarner Bucht. Für die spontanen Reiseleiter Schenk und Eich war es der erste Besuch in dem küstenreichen Mittelmeerland, das nur wenige Jahre zuvor aufgrund des Jugoslawienkriegs noch in der Krise steckte. Das hielt die Abenteurer aber nicht davon ab, die Pionierrolle zu übernehmen und die erste Rad- und Schiffreise in Kroatien zu veranstalten. Damals waren die Ansprüche sowie die Standards noch nicht so hoch wie heute. Das Boot war klein und es gab keine Privatbadezimmer oder luxuriöse Decks und Speisesalons. Trotzdem waren alle so begeistert von der Idee, dass sie die beiden Reiseleiter darin bestärkten, diese in größerem Rahmen aufzuziehen und eine Firma zu gründen. So geschehen 1999 – mit Hilfe ihres Steuerberaters, den sie im Telefonbuch ausfindig machten, wurde 1999 eine GmbH gegründet. Heute ist Inselhüpfen der erfolgreichste Anbieter im Segment der Rad- und Schiffsreisen.

In the morning hours of the 4th of September 1998, 30 cyclists and their personal bikes boarded a coach and set off on a journey towards the Kvarner Bay in Croatia. The average price per person was 980 DM (Deutsche Mark). Back in the beginning the demands and standards were not as high as they are today. The boat was small and there were no private bathrooms or luxurious sun decks and dining rooms. Nevertheless, the participants of that first tour were so enthusiastic about what they had experienced that they encouraged the two tour guides to develop their concept and to start their own company. One year later in 1999 the duo founded Radurlaub Zeitreisen GmbH and started to work on their Islandhopping tours. The finances required to start the company were loaned to them by a tax consultant, whom they stumbled across in the telephone book. Liebes Inselhüpfen-Team und lieber Klaus, ich durfte in 19 Jahren 35 Mal mit Euch Inselhüpfen und ehrlich gesagt kann ich davon nie genug bekommen. So schön wie die allererste Reise war auch die letzte und wird auch die nächste sein. Dazwischen waren echte Highlights, außergewöhnliche Reisen, wie zum Beispiel zur Sonnenfinsternis in die Südtürkei im März 2006. Erstaunlicherweise war es oft besonders erlebnisreich und schön, wenn mal etwas nicht so ganz nach Plan lief. Radurlaub Zeitreisen hat sich in diesen 20 Jahren ständig entwickelt, vieles wurde verbessert und optimiert. Vom Katalog bis zu Details beim Frühstück auf dem Schiff, von der optimalen Route bis zur Helmpflicht hat sich vieles getan! Nachdem ich nun auch fast 20 Jahre älter bin als anfangs, genieße ich den gestiegenen Komfort aus vollem Herzen. Wie herrlich ist das Heimkommen aufs Schiff, die herzliche Begrüßung und die Freude auf eine wundervolle Woche! Dann sind die Tage ausgefüllt mit immer wieder neuen, aufregenden Erlebnissen, sportlicher Herausforderung, tollen Mahlzeiten und dem Relaxen an Bord. Die Gemeinschaft, in der ich das alles erlebt habe und die vielen Freunde, die ich beim Inselhüpfen gefunden habe steigerten den Genuss erheblich, denn geteilte Freude ist doppelte Freude. Auch die Wehmütigkeit beim Abschied gehört jedes Mal dazu. Die Heimreise, braun gebrannt und total erholt, das letzte Lachen noch im Ohr. Da tröstet dann nur die Aussicht auf das nächste Mal. Dear Islandhopping Team and Klaus, In 19 years I’ve joined Islandhopping cruises more than 35 times and to be honest – I can’t get enough of it! My most recent tour was as beautiful as my first and likewise for any tours to come in the future. Throughout there have been plenty of highlights for instance the extraordinary journey in Turkey during the solar eclipse in March 2006. Surprisingly enough it was often a more exciting and memorable experience if something did not go as planned. In the past 20 years, Radurlaub Zeitreisen have developed steadily, constantly improving and optimizing where they can. From the catalog to the attention to detail at breakfast on the ship, from planning the optimal route to the requirement of a helmet on each head; many things have changed! Now, 20 years on, I too enjoy the increased comfort offered by recent developments. It is wonderful coming back ‘home’ to a boat, the warm welcomes and the excitement for a delightful week. The days are filled with never ending, new and exciting experiences, athletic challenges, delicious meals and relaxing times on board. The community, the experience, and the many friends I found during the trips have greatly contributed to my fond enthusiasm. Shared joy is double the joy. A sad farewell is also part of every trip. The journey home, tanned and totally relaxed, with the sound of joyous laughter in my ears. To look forward to the next journey is the only cure. Der Familie Šerka aus Kroatien kann in Sachen Bootsbau keiner etwas vor machen. Der Vater und alle drei Söhne sind dabei. Und das ist auch gut so, denn Boote sind ihre große Leidenschaft.

The Šerka Family from Postira, Croatia, are true masters when it comes to building boats. The father and all three sons shape a dedicated team, all with the same driving passion for boats.

BOOTSBAUER AUS LEIDENSCHAFT D e r Traum der Träume

Pave stand mit 17 Jahren schon am Steuer der JOAN (18 m Länge, 80 Passagiere), auf der sein Vater von 1993 bis 2005 arbeitete. Als der Vater erkrankte, übernahmen die drei Brüder Pave, Tonči und Jozo das Schiff. 2002 entschieden sie sich, noch ein weiteres Schiff zu kaufen, was sich als große Herausforderung entpuppte, da kein Schiff den Geschmack der drei Brüder und des Vaters traf. Kurzerhand fiel der Entschluss, ein eigenes Boot zu bauen und das Großprojekt „San Snova“ begann 2005. 4 Jahre später, nach 2 Jahren Trockenbau und 2 Jahren Bau im Hafen von Postira, war das Baby der Familie Šerka fertig. Das war auch die Zeit, in der Inselhüpfen durch Zufall auf die Familie Šerka aufmerksam wurde, da ein Mitarbeiter mit Pave ins Gespräch kam.

At the tender age of 17, the eldest son, Pave, took to the wheel of JOAN (18 m long, 80 passengers) the boat on which his father had worked from 1993 to 2005. As their father fell ill, the three brothers, Pave, Jozo and Tonči took over operation of the boat. In 2002 the brothers decided to buy themselves a second boat which, turned out to be more challenging than previously thought as none of the boats available on the market met the expectations of the three sons and their father. Without losing too much time over the matter, they decided to build a boat themselves and project ‘San Snova’ was born in 2005. Four years later, after two years of construction in their back garden and two further years of interior work on the water in the harbor of Postira, the Šerka family dream came true. It was around this time that a member of the Islandhopping guide team met Pave in the harbor of Postira and talked of the potential to introduce the San Snova into the Islandhopping fleet. Auch wenn ein Stahlschiff die günstigere Variante ist, haben sich die Šerkas für den Bau eines Holzschiffs entschieden. Die Liebe zum Holz und die Arbeit mit dem Material überwog. So ein massives Holzschiff bekommt man natürlich nicht nur zu dritt fertig. Die Familie und viele enge Freunde halfen dabei, die San Snova in vier Jahren fertig zu stellen. Als letzter Schritt musste die San Snova vom Stapel gelassen werden, was konkret 50 Meter Bewegung und 2 Tage Arbeit bedeutete. San Snova heißt wörtlich übersetzt „Traum der Träume“. Nomen est omen - die Šerka Söhne träumten schon als kleine Kinder davon, ihr eigenes Holzschiff zu besitzen. Heute ist jeder der drei Brüder Kapitän eines Inselhüpfen Schiffs. Tonči ist auf der San Snova, Jozo Kapitän der Harmonia und Pave arbeitet auf der Melody. Ein wahrgewordenes Bootsbauer-Märchen in Kroatien.

Although the purchase of a steel ship would have been the cheaper option, the family decided to fulfil their dream of building a wooden boat; the biggest and last of its kind to be built in Croatia. Choosing to use wood as the construction material meant that the entire project was shaped by hand, giving the project soul. In order to complete a ship of this scale, the four family members reached out and were supported throughout the project by relatives and close friends who worked tirelessly on the San Snova for four years to the day of its launch. Two years into the project the hull was completed and the family was faced with the challenge of launching the boat into the water; a journey of 50 m which would take an incredible two days to achieve. San Snova translated means, ‘Dream of Dreams’. Nomen est omen – As little boys, the Šerka brothers dreamed of owning their own wooden boat. Today, each of the three brothers are proud captains of their own boats, and we are proud to have them in our Islandhopping fleet. Tonči on the San Snova, Jozo on the Harmonia, and Pave on the Melody. A true boatsbuilder-tale in Croatia.

Islandhopping’s one hit wonders Nach über 2.700 Charterwochen hat man die Erfahrung, dass brillante Ideen und ausgeklügelte Konzepte in der Ausführung doch nicht so gut funktionieren, wie vorgestellt. So schön die Insel oder das Land auch sein mag – in der Praxis kann sich das Konzept der Radkreuzfahrt als Flaute herausstellen. Während unsere exotischen Ziele auf den Seychellen und Indonesien das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis gesprengt haben, standen wir in Ägypten ohne Schiff da und haben in Italien gemerkt, dass es keine ausreichend großen Schiffe für das Inselhüpfen gibt.

SE YCHELLEN & INDONESIEN SE YCHELLES & INDONESIA

Zu unserem 10-jährigen Jubiläum wollten wir unsere Gäste mit etwas ganz Speziellem überraschen. Ein Traum, wunderschön, das Inselparadies schlechthin – das sind die SEYCHELLEN, für die wir 2008 gleich zwei Reisen geplant hatten. Die Strukturen für eine Radkreuzfahrt mussten komplett neu geschaffen werden. Wir importierten unsere Fahrräder und mussten ein passendes Schiff finden. Der Reisegrundpreis betrug 2.500 Euro ohne Flüge, und die sind aus Europa nach Ostafrika nicht gerade ein Schnäppchen. Der hohe Aufwand lohnte sich kaum, da die Preise für dieses Paket ausuferten und die Nachfrage dementsprechend gering war. Unsere Fahrräder haben wir an einen Fahrradverleih auf der Insel La Digue verkauft. Noch heute kann man sich dort für 10 Euro am Tag ein ehemaliges Inselhüpfen-Rad ausleihen. Das spricht auf jeden Fall für die Qualität der Räder, die Reise haben wir aber noch im gleichen Jahr aus unserem Programm gestrichen. Auch in INDONESIEN war das Problem identisch. Zu hohe Reisekosten für das Gesamtpaket haben dafür gesorgt, dass die Nachfrage für das Inselhüpfen im Land der Komodowarane nicht hoch genug war.

For our 10th anniversary we wanted to surprise our guests with something very special. A dream destination, captivating beauty, a simple island paradise – no destination suited our imagination better than the SEYCHELLES, where we planned to take two wondrous trips in 2008. The simplicity of the islands offered us no logistic support, so, while we were busy looking for a suitable boat, a container of bikes was imported to the island paradise from Germany. The basic tour price was 2,500 euros without flights, which isn’t considered a bargain regardless which continent you are from. The effort which ensued was hardly worth our while as the prices for the package grew out of hand and the public demand for the destination rapidly dwindled. After our struggles we decided not to take the bikes back to Germany, but instead we sold them on the island of La Digue. To this day you can rent them for 10 euros a day. This definitely speaks for the quality of our bikes, but the Seychelles as an Islandhopping destination had to be canceled. In INDONESIA the problem was close to identical. Exorbitant travel costs ensured that the demand for Islandhopping in the country of the Komodo dragon was fairly low.

After more than 2.700 charter weeks, one has to confess that brilliant ideas and sophisticated concepts do not always play out as well as they are planned. Regardless of how picturesque or culturally captivating a country may be – in practice, the execution of a great bicycle cruise can encounter many hurdles. Exotic destinations such as the Seychelles and Indonesia blew all budgets on our mission to deliver great value for money, in Egypt we were left high and dry without a ship and in Italy we came to the somber realization that great harbors are not always home to great ships.

In ÄGYPTEN waren das größte Problem die Behörden und ihre undurchsichtigen, merkwürdigen Regelwerke. So erfuhren wir erst vor Ort, dass ägyptische Schiffe den Abfahrtshafen nicht ändern durften und immer wieder dazu gezwungen waren zurückzukehren. Wie macht man eine Inselhüpfen-Reise mit einem Schiff, das nur in seinen Heimathafen einlaufen kann? Gar nicht. Spontan wurde aus der Ägypten-Reise mit Rad und Schiff eine Hotel & Radreise durch Ägypten und Jordanien, wo wir die Felsenstadt Petra besuchten. All die Organisation und das logistische Hin und Her erbrachten ein kleines Wunder - für die letzten zwei Tage wurde ein Schiff ausfindig gemacht, und die Gäste konnten sich den Seewind doch noch um die Nase wehen lassen.

SARDINIEN und KORSIKA hingegen wären für das Inselhüpfen ausgezeichnet gewesen. Aber hier stößt man schon bei der Findung eines Schiffs auf Herausforderungen. Keines kann mehr als 12 Gäste beherbergen. Für Inselhüpfen keine Basis, weshalb die italienischfranzösische Radkreuzfahrt-Variante auf der Strecke bleiben musste. Bei Inselhüpfen machen wir uns regelmäßig Gedanken über neue Reisen oder gar neue Destinationen. Manche funktionieren, und manche muss man schweren Herzens eben doch sein lassen. So ist das Leben!

The biggest problem which we encountered in EGYPT were the authorities and their obscure standards and regulations. Unfortunately for us, it was only once we had arrived on site that we were informed that Egyptian ships could only leave and return to the harbor in which they were registered. It is hard to imagine an Islandhopping tour with a ship which can only return to its home port after its daily excursions. Stranded on land we spontaneously designed a hotel & bike tour through Egypt and Jordan, where we visited the historical and archaeological town of Petra. Endless hours of rearranging and spontaneous planning birthed a small miracle - for the last two days of the trip we were able to find a boat and the guests were finally on the water, able to enjoy the fantastic sea breeze. SARDINIA and CORSICA, on the other hand, were excellent for Islandhopping. The only and unfortunately the biggest problem was finding a suitable boat for our guests. None of the vessels were able to accommodate more than 12 people. Although we appreciate the intimacy of small groups, the resources needed to manage a holiday for 12 people would have left us with an unrealistic travel price for our guests. Staying true to our morals we cast off and continued our voyage in search of further destinations. We are continuously planning new tours and scouting new destinations, many of which work out and some of which just don’t suite the required conditions. Time brings change and we learn to adapt. In alten Zeiten versetzte eine Sonnenfinsternis die Menschen oft in Angst und Schrecken, galt sie doch als göttliches Omen, bei der ein Untier die Sonne auffrisst. Als böses Vorzeichen wird eine Sonnenfinsternis heute gewiss nicht mehr gedeutet, doch übt dieses Naturphänomen noch immer ungebrochene Faszination auf uns aus. Gerade weil sie ein so seltenes Ereignis ist? 2006 war eine totale Sonnenfinsternis in der Türkei der Anlass für eine der außergewöhnlichsten Reisen der Inselhüpfen-Chronik. Zwei Wochen lang kreuzten wir mit vielen Stammgästen und all unseren Reiseleitern vor der bezaubernden türkischen Südküste. Wir besuchten faszinierende Orte wie den tief in den Fels eingegrabenen Sakklikent-Canyon oder die großartigen antiken

Stätten von Limyra, Arikanda und Myra. Wir ließen uns von den ewig brennenden Steinen der Chimaira in der Nähe von Olympos in den Bann ziehen und von der natürlichen Schönheit der Lykischen Küste sowie der überbordenden Freundlichkeit ihrer Bewohner begeistern. Doch einem Moment fieberten wir ganz besonders entgegen, bis es am 29. März 2006 gegen elf Uhr Ortszeit soweit war: Für rund vier Minuten durften wir bei klarem Wetter die letzte totale Sonnenfinsternis in unseren Breiten vor dem Jahr 2081 erleben – mitten auf dem Meer, umgeben von vollkommener Stille auf unseren Beobachtungsplätzen auf dem Sonnendeck der Bahriyeli. Ein einzigartiger und unvergessener Gänsehautmoment.

A SUMMER‘S DAY WITHOUT THE SUN I n p u r s u i t of the solar eclipse Throughout ancient times, an eclipse of the sun has caused unease amongst many populations, regarding it as being a divine omen, in which a beast swallows up the sun. An eclipse of the sun is certainly no longer interpreted as an omen, but this natural phenomenon continues to exert fond fascination on us. Agreeably because it is such a rare event. In 2006, a predicted total solar eclipse in Turkey laid the foundations for one of the most spectacular Islandhopping journeys to date. A two week tour, accompanied by several regular Islandhopping guests and the entire team of tour guides, led us along the enchanting Southern coast of Turkey. We visited fascinating locations such as the Sakklikent Canyon, gauged deep into the mountainous countryside, and the great ancient

sites of Limyra, Arikanda and Myra. Our fascination was captivated by the eternal burning stones of Chimaira near Olympos and the overall natural beauty of the Lycian coast as well as the overwhelming friendliness of its inhabitants. But there was one special moment which held us all in awe. At eleven o‘clock local time on March 29. 2006. for a precious four minutes, clear skies enabled us to experience the last total solar eclipse in our latitude before the year 2081 – Alone and undisturbed in the middle of the sea, surrounded by nothing but water, we gazed from our exclusive observatory; the sun deck of the Bahriyeli. CULINAR Y E X P E R I E N C E S O N L I N DA „It‘s not the size that counts… it‘s how you use it:“ Das Essen ist auf jedem unserer Schiffe ein besonders wichtiges Anliegen, denn zu einem rundum guten Urlaub gehört auch köstliches Essen.

Delicious food and a great holiday go hand in hand. This is why the culinary experience on each of our ships is of particular importance to us.

Nenad Creno, besser bekannt als Neno, ist Chefkoch auf unserem Holzsegler Linda. Sein Repertoire ist breit gefächert – von Kalbsschnitzel über frischen Fisch, Muscheln und gefüllte Paprika nach kroatischer Art. Neno’s selbst kreierte Köstlichkeiten lassen einem das Wasser im Mund zusammenlaufen. Jeder Tag auf der Linda beginnt mit einem stärkenden Frühstück, gefolgt von einem 2-Gänge Mittag- und/oder Abendessen und einer großen Auswahl an kulinarisch erlesenen Desserts. Neno ist schon seit über sieben Jahren kreativer Kopf hinter den Menüs, die auf der Linda jedes Jahr von April bis Oktober serviert werden. Er arbeitet sieben Tage die Woche, an manchen sogar bis zu 15 Stunden, und bezeichnet sich immer noch gerne als passionierten Koch.

Nenad Creno, better known as Neno, is master of the galley on board our wooden motor sailor Linda. His repertoire is broad - from veal chops to freshly prepared gilt-head and hake to mussels and stuffed peppers in traditional Croatian style. Neno‘s creations in the kitchen insure that the extra kilos which our guests take home with them from the holiday are not the souvenirs in their suitcases. Every day on the Linda begins with a fully rounded breakfast, followed by a 2-course lunch and/or dinner accompanied by a wide variety of mouthwatering deserts. Neno has been the creative mastermind behind the menus served on board the Linda every year, from April to October, for over 7 years. He works seven days a week, sometimes even up to 15 hours a day and yet, cooking remains his passion.

Jeden Sonntag, wenn wieder ein Gästewechsel ansteht, geht Neno in den lokalen Supermärkten einkaufen, um die Gäste der kommenden Woche mit spannenden kulinarischen Erlebnissen zu überraschen. Dabei achtet Neno vor allem auf den Erwerb frischer und saisonaler Produkte, um so vielfältig wie möglich kochen zu können. Sich in solch einer kleinen Bootsküche zu organisieren erfordert viel Geschick. Zuvor arbeitete er in der Großküche eines Frachtschiffs, was ihm nach 22 Jahren allerdings zu eintönig wurde. Ein Unterschied wie Tag und Nacht und ein Wechsel der ihm sichtlich gut tut. Auf der überschaubaren Linda hat er mehr Zeit, aus jedem seiner Gerichte ein kulinarisches Highlight für die Gäste zu zaubern.

Every Sunday, as we prepare the boat for our new travel companions, Neno goes shopping in the local supermarket to purchase fresh and seasonal products in order to surprise the guests with a variety of regional specialties throughout the week. Getting organized in such a small kitchen requires a lot of skill. Previously, he worked in a large kitchen on board of a cargo ship, but after 22 years his daily duties became too monotonous. Although his working space has become more limited, the working environment in which he finds himself today has given Neno a whole new perspective to cooking on board a boat. On board the quaint Linda he sees the smiles on the guest’s faces after a good meal and receives compliments for his efforts giving him the motivation to put more time and effort into his culinary creations. Mountainbiking gehört zu den am schnellsten wachsenden Sportarten weltweit und mit Sicherheit auch zu den Sportarten mit der rasantesten technischen Weiterentwicklung innerhalb des letzten Jahrzehnts. Eine Entwicklung, die auch wir Inselhüpfer durchlaufen haben, denn die Nachfrage nach dem Gipfelglück mit Meerblick ist groß. Ein ultimatives, vollgefedertes Trail-Bike mit hydrogeformtem, konfiziertem Alu-Rahmen, 150 mm Federweg, TwinLock Technologie, Vario-Sattelstütze … Sie verstehen nur Bahnhof? So ging es uns bis vor einigen Jahren auch. Vermutlich gab es noch gar kein Fullsuspension MTB, als Inselhüpfen seine ersten Mountainbike-Touren veranstaltete. Nicht nur über die radtechnische Entwicklung haben wir inzwischen eine Menge dazu gelernt. Mittlerweile können wir den Wunsch unserer OffroadFans nach Bikes auf dem neuesten technischen Stand inklusive der sich immer größerer Beliebtheit erfreuenden E-MTBs erfüllen. Wir wissen unterdessen auch, dass das Mountainbikerglück nicht unbedingt aus breiten Schotter- und Waldwegen, sondern aus möglichst flowigen Singletrails – gerne mit technisch anspruchsvollen Passagen – besteht.

FROM GIBBERISH TO JARGON Mountain biking is one of the fastest growing sports in the world based not only on the number of enthusiasts getting involved in the bike scene but also in technological advances within the last decade. A development process which Islandhopping has also taken part in. We recognize the diversity of this sport as being the driving factor of its gain in popularity. The ultimate, full suspension trail bike with a hydro formed aluminum frame, 150 mm suspension travel, twin lock technology and a dropper seat post… sounds like a bunch of gibberish! Just a few years back this terminology meant little to us. Developments in rear suspension systems started only shortly before the first Islandhopping MTB tour debuted and it wasn’t for years to come before these technological advancements eventually replaced the iron donkey’s on which we rode our first off road trails. Since then our knowledge and awareness has grown a great deal in regard to the bike and how to meet the demands of our off-road fans with bikes at the latest technical level, including the increasingly popular E-MTBs. The changes which we have experienced have not been limited to the bike but also include the terrain in which we ride. Progressing rapidly from wide gravel roads onto more technical and narrower single trails with a high flow factor.

We thought, O ff-Road In our MTB destinations, Croatia and Greece, we have spent endless hours walking, riding, scratching our arms and legs and getting lost, scouting for the most incredible trails which the islands have to offer in order to enrich our MTB & Boat tour programs. In 2016 we started operating our first exclusive MTB & Boat tours, where participants are able to choose between varying riding styles each day. The year 2017 has taken us to new heights in our quest to fully establish ourselves in the MTB scene with the opening of our first bike center in Rabac, Croatia in cooperation with Cycle Croatia, and our participation in the International Aegean Trail Project in Greece. „Trail“ ist das magische Wort für den Mountainbiker. Diese fünf Buchstaben lassen das Bikerherz höher schlagen, bringen die Augen zum Leuchten und zaubern ein lausbubenhaftes Grinsen ins Gesicht. Seit über fünfzehn Jahren bereisen Inselhüpfer die Griechische Ägäis, die allerbeste Voraussetzungen fürs Mountainbiken bietet. Wilde, vielfach unberührte Natur, ausgesprochen gastfreundliche Bewohner, mediterranes Lebensgefühl. Alles schon da! Einzig und allein: Die Trails fehlten. Das zu ändern ist das große Ziel der Inselhüpfer. Auf die Idee hat uns Bike-Ikone Ernesto Hutmacher gebracht, der die Region um Massa Marittima in der Toskana aus dem Nichts zu einer Vorbild-Bikeregion ausgebaut hat und mit seinem Bikehotel Massa Vecchia eine der erfolgreichsten Bikestationen Europas führt. Mit all seinem Expertenwissen und tatkräftiger Unterstützung der Trail Brothers Tuscany wurde im Frühjahr 2017 der Grundstein für den Ausbau der Ägäis-Inseln zu einer attraktiven Bikeregion gelegt.

For more than fifteen years, Islandhopping has been exploring the Greek Aegean Islands, which offer great potential for mountain biking. Wild, often untouched nature, welcoming inhabitants and the Mediterranean lifestyle. Basically everything, except for the missing trails! Our goal was to bring the wind of change. Our ambition to improve the trail network on the islands was brought to us by MTB enthusiast Ernesto Hutmacher, who turned the Tuscan region around Massa Marittima, Italy, into a model biking region with his bike hotel, Massa Vecchia. One of the most successful bike stations in Europe. In spring 2017, supported by the expertise of Ernesto and the Trail Brothers Tuscany, the foundations were laid for a project to turn the Greek Aegean islands into an attractive MTB destination.

„Trail“ is a magical word for mountain bikers. These five letters are what keeps a mountain bikers heart beating, a twinkle in their eyes, and conjure a grin from cheek to cheek. Auch Inselhüpfen schickte ein großes Team an den Start und mit vereinten Kräften bauten Beteiligte aus fünf europäischen Ländern gemeinsam mit begeisterten Griechen auf den drei Inseln Kos, Leros und Patmos drei neue Trails, die nicht nur durch Atem beraubend schöne Landschaft führen, sondern auch ohne Gefahrenstellen sicher zu befahren sind. Der oberste Teil des Trails vom Mt. Dikeo auf Kos wurde vom lokalen Bikeclub „Mud Turtles“ nach Abschluss der Arbeiten „United Nations Trail“ getauft - für uns ein echtes Zeichen von gelebtem europäischem Spirit. Der neu gebaute „Lighthouse Trail“ auf Leros schaffte es zudem unter die fünf Finalisten des internationalen Wettbewerbs „Take Care of Your Trail 2017“. Wir Inselhüpfer sind unglaublich stolz, Teil dieses einmaligen Projekts zu sein, das weitergehen und bald auf dem Internetportal www.aegeantrails.net auch eine digitale Heimat erhalten wird. Mit unserem Engagement für die gerade entstehende Bikeregion Ägäis können wir nicht nur den lokalen Aktivtourismus und all die enthusiastischen Biker in Griechenland unterstützen, sondern auch unseren eigenen mountainbikenden Gästen Trailspaß vom Feinsten auf den Ägäis-Inseln bieten.

Together with a team of enthusiastic Islandhoppers, a unified team of varying nationalities cooperated with enthusiastic Greeks to start work on the three islands of Kos, Leros and Patmos. We built three new trails, which not only lead through breathtaking landscapes but can also be used safely without the risk of dangerous hurdles. On completion, the top part of the Mt. Dikeo trail on Kos was named “United Nations Trail” by the local bike club „Mud Turtles“ – a true example of passionate European team spirit. A new trail on the island of Leros „Lighthouse Trail“, constructed during the project, even took a space in the five finalists of the „Take Care of Your Trail 2017“ competition. We at Islandhopping are incredibly proud to be part of this unique project, which continues to develop and will soon have a digital home under the following URL: www.aegaentrails.net. With our commitment to the emerging Aegean biking region, we are not only supporting local eco-tourism and all the enthusiastic local bikers in Greece but also offer our guests, who love mountain biking, a rad experience on the Aegean Islands. O n board with the Tannheim af ter- c are clinic Reiseleiter zu sein, bringt viele Tätigkeiten mit sich: den Umgang mit Gästen verschiedenster Herkunftsländer, das Hin- und Herwechseln zwischen einzelner Sprachen im Minutentakt, höchste Konzentration, Sicherheit, Freundlichkeit, Höflichkeit, Schnelligkeit und ein breit aufgestelltes Allgemeinwissen. Durch unseren Job sammeln wir Erfahrungen, die auch uns selbst formen. Ich hatte das Glück, die Reisen mit der Nachsorgeklinik Tannheim leiten zu dürfen. Tannheim bietet einen medizinisch-therapeutischen Behandlungsansatz, der auf die Rehabilitation von Familien mit krebs-, herz- und mukoviszidosekranken Kindern, Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen abgestimmt ist. Jedes Jahr hüpfen sie mit uns mit. Die Erfahrungen, die ich in dieser Zeit gesammelt habe, zählen zu meinen schönsten Erinnerungen, die ich unter keinen Umständen missen möchte. Die Tannheim-Woche unterscheidet sich schon deutlich von einer regulären Inselhüpfen-Woche: es kommen Familien mit kranken Kindern, meistens nach einer Reha-Behandlung, um die Sonne und das Meer zu genießen.

Being a tour guide can be quite demanding: Dealing with guests from all around the world, switching languages with each passing minute, high levels of concentration, safety, friendliness, courtesy, speed and a widespread general knowledge. Throughout our career we collect experiences which shape who we are. The Tannheim after-care clinic offers a medical-therapeutic treatment approach, which has been adapted for the rehabilitation of families with children and young adults suffering from cancer, cardiac diseases and cystic fibrosis. Each year the clinic invites a number of patients, accompanied by their families, on board. The experiences and friendships that I’ve gained throughout guiding the tours for Tannheim are among my most beautiful memories. The Tannheim week is clearly different from a regular Islandhopping week: families with ill children, mostly after rehabilitation treatment, enjoying the sun and the sea and freedom.

Nach der ersten Vorstellungsrunde ist die Atmosphäre entspannt und zusammengehörig - unabhängig von Äußerlichkeiten oder gesundheitlichen Umständen. Der Sinn der Woche ist es, dass die Eltern und deren Kinder, die die meiste Zeit in Krankenhäusern verbringen, sich entspannen können. Die Kinder, die dabei sind, sind wunderschöne, dankbare Individuen, die sich einfach etwas Aufmerksamkeit wünschen. Während der Woche schwimmen wir, machen leichtere Radtouren, baden in der Sonne und spielen stundenlang Spiele. Das Schiff, auf dem die Tannheim-Reisen stattfinden, ist die San Snova. Die Familie Šerka, der dieses Schiff gehört, ist liebenswert und als Begleitung für diese Reise einfach perfekt. Die Besatzung ist sehr gut gelaunt und immer für einen Spaß zu haben. Voller Stolz möchte ich sagen, dass Inselhüpfen diese Reisen fünf Jahre lang für die Deutsche Kinderkrebsnachsorge komplett gesponsert hat und nun wird dies von anderen Sponsoren weitergeführt, um möglichst vielen kranken Kindern und ihren Familien eine kleine Auszeit von ihrem schweren Alltag zu ermöglichen. Ich bin sehr dankbar, dass ich ein Teil davon sein durfte!

After getting to know each other on the sun deck, the atmosphere is relaxed and connected regardless of visiual appearances or health conditions. The parents and their children, who usually spend most of their time in hospital, can indulge and relax for a week. The children are wonderful and thankful individuals, who enjoy the courtesy of this cruise. During the week we swim, enjoy two easy bike rides, relax in the sun and play games for hours on end. The Šerka family, who built the boat, on which the Tannheim voyage takes place, are the perfect companions for this trip. The crew is cheerful and take delight in making the kids laugh, commonly enjoying a game of twister or cards together. I am proud to say that Islandhopping has sponsored these journeys for 5 years, and is now being replaced by another sponsor in order to allow as many families as possible to take a short break from their busy daily lives. Einmal im Jahr heißt es für die Musikschüler aus Wil in der Schweiz „Bläserkids on Tour“. Mit ihrem engagierten Musiklehrer, Thomas Fele, und den Instrumenten im Gepäck beginnt die Abenteuerreise nach Kroatien. Ein besonderes Highlight für die Musikschüler sind die Konzerte, die sie in den angelaufenen Hafenstädten am Abend geben. Da wird die temporäre Festival-Bühne, die in Trogir steht, gerne für ein spontanes „jazzig-rockiges, swingendes“ Konzert genutzt, und die Zuschauer sind baff. Das Rundum-Sorglos Paket kann sich nicht jeder leisten, deshalb hat Inselhüpfen vor einigen Jahren beschlossen, den Schülergruppen die außergewöhnlichen Rad- und Schiffreisen für einen geringen Selbstkostenbeitrag zu ermöglichen. Neben dem Probealltag ist das Inselhüpfen eine willkommene Abwechslung und die spontanen Konzerte eine sehr gute Übung für das Orchester. Die Konzerte erfreuen sich äußerster Beliebtheit und bieten auch eine Möglichkeit, das Kässchen der Gruppe ein wenig aufzustocken, denn die vorbeilaufenden Passanten sind meist spendabel. Each year a resounding brass symphony accompanies us across the Adriatic in the form of highly talented music students from Wil, Switzerland, known as the ‘Bläserkids’. In the company of their dedicated teacher, Thomas Fele, and their wind instruments, the group board the boat for a week and compose their own summer soundtrack. A special highlight are their spontaneous evening concerts in the harbor towns. Passersby are captivated by the vibrant concerts and sizeable crowds gather to enjoy the impromptu performances. This is not only a great way for the Bläserkids to practice their skill, they are also able to finance a portion of their outings through the donations gathered by onlookers. The all-round carefree holidays on board the boat are not something which everyone can afford. For this reason Islandhopping decided to provide their amazing Bike & Boat trips for student groups for a compensated price. This not only enables but also encourages certain student groups to take time out together to enjoy such experiences away from their monotonous day to day schedules, providing motivation and fun in learning. Um mit den südostasiatischen Kochkünsten vertraut zu werden, besuchen wir bei unserer Vietnamreise schon seit einigen Jahren Kochschulen auf der kleinen Insel Tra Que bei Hoi An. Einst lag dort der größte Hafen Südostasiens, weshalb die Esskultur bis heute floriert. Der einst sehr trockene und ertraglose Boden wurde damals mit Seegras aus dem Delta versehen, was Feuchtigkeit spendet und die Erde fruchtbar macht. Diese spezielle Technik entstand damals aus der Not heraus, da die vielen ankommenden Schiffe aus China, Japan und anderen Ländern mit Essen versorgt werden sollten, das zuvor angebaut werden musste. Auch heute wird diese Technik noch angewandt.

In order to fully appreciate the true flavor complexity of the far eastern kitchen, you must start from scratch. The best place to do this in Vietnam is at a cookery course on the small island of Tra Que close to Hoi An. In the 18th Century Hoi An was considered the most important port in Southeast Asia, contributing greatly to its flourishing food culture. Although the soil was very dry and infertile at the time, local innovation led to the improvement of these conditions through the cultivation of sea grass from the delta, providing the area with the necessary moisture and nutrients to plant sustainable crops. This innovative technique continues to be used in the area to this day and emerged out of pure necessity to provide the many visiting trading vessels from China, Japan and further abroad with sustenance.

Die Region um Hoi An und das Mekongdelta ist für ihre vielen traditionellen Kochschulen bekannt und sehr beliebt. In Tra Que werden typische Kräuter wie Koriander, Zitronengras, Minze und Thai-Basilikum angebaut. Unter Vietnamesen kennt man den Ort vor allem auch wegen seiner eigenen ‚Tra Que Wurzel‘. Je nach Kochschule bekommt man eine lehrreiche Einführung, sozusagen eine Gewürzkunde, und im Anschluss kocht jeder sein eigenes, authentisches 3-Gänge-Menü mit frischen Kräutern aus dem Garten. Vietnamesische Frühlingsrollen, lokale Pfannkuchen, die man mit der deutschen Version kaum vergleichen kann, oder andere interessante Geschmacksexplosionen sind keine Seltenheit im individuellen Menü der Inselhüpfer.

The region around Hoi An and the Mekong Delta now present their culinary culture to visitors via a number of cookery schools. In Tra Que typical herbs such as coriander, lemon grass, mint and Thai basil are cultivated. Among the Vietnamese, the region is mainly known for its own ‘Tra Que root’. The culinary courses typically begin with an introduction to the region and its specialties. Afterwards participants have the chance to cook their very own authentic 3-course menu with fresh herbs from the garden. Vietnamese spring rolls, local pancakes (hardly comparable with the western version) along with a variety of other dishes representing ingredients and tastes rarely common to the western visitors. Wer kann sich in der heutigen westlichen Welt noch einen Ort ohne funktionierendes Internet vorstellen? Natürlich gibt es hier und dort einige Ausnahmen, aber dass ein solcher Ort auf der Insel Cres in Kroatien existiert, hätten wohl die Wenigsten vermutet. Claudia Heck, gebürtige Österreicherin und Weltenbummlerin, hat sich nach 15 Jahren in Südamerika inzwischen mit ihrem kroatischen Lebensgefährten in Podol auf Cres niedergelassen, wo sie unter anderem als Schriftstellerin arbeitet. Ihre Bücher kann man direkt bei ihr zu Hause kaufen und nebenbei bietet sie in ihrem Garten hausgemachtes Feigeneis, Blätterteigtaschen mit inseleigenem Salbeihonig, Kaffee und hausgemachte Zitronenlimo an – eine kleine, urige Manufaktur sozusagen. Ihr Herzensprojekt ist „Podol im Netz“. Das sind gehäkelte Einkaufsnetze aus Wollresten, die sie für 10 Euro pro Stück verkauft und als ihre ganz eigene Interpretation der „globalen Vernetzung“ sieht. Denn man schont mit den plastikfreien Tragetaschen nicht nur die Umwelt, sondern wird beim Kauf auch akribisch in ein Buch eingetragen. Jedes Netz besitzt eine Nummer und Claudia notiert sich, wohin das Netz verkauft wurde. Außerdem erhält jeder Käufer eine Postkarte mit der Bitte, diese mit einem Foto des Netzes vom jeweiligen Heimatort an Claudia zurückzusenden. Eine sehr kreative Art und Weise nicht in Vergessenheit zu geraten – und das sogar ganz ohne das World Wide Web.

It is hard to imagine a place in today’s digital western world without an internet connection. There are certainly many remote exceptions, but to discover such a place on the Island of Cres in Croatia is a true surprise! Truth be told, Claudia Heck, Austrian native and passionate globetrotter, has found such a place on the Croatian Island of Cres. After living 15 years in South America, Claudia and her Croatian husband now call the quaint village of Podol home. In addition to her new found occupation as a writer, Claudia prepares her own fresh fig ice-cream, puff pastries, sage honey, coffee and homemade lemonade – the most remote café on the Island. However, the project dearest to her is called, ‘Podol in the Net’. A collection of crocheted woolen bags, sold for 10€ a piece, is what connects Claudia internationally with her visitors. Not only are the bags environmentally friendly, Claudia keeps track of each bag with a reference number in a logbook. For each sold bag, Claudia records where in the world the bag was sold to. Every customer receives a post card along with their purchase with the request to return the postcard with a picture of the bag in its new home. Unsere Familie, die Familie Tvrdić, kommt ursprünglich aus Split. In den 80ern beschloss mein Vater Tomislav, der die Imkerei von seinem Schwiegervater gelernt hatte, sich voll und ganz den Bienen zu widmen und professioneller Imker zu werden. Dies zog unseren Umzug auf die wunderschöne Insel Šolta nach sich, auf der der exklusive Rosmarinhonig Olintio geerntet werden konnte.

Our family, the Tvrdić family, is originally from Split. In the 1980s my father, Tomislav, who in turn learned about bees from his father in law, Mirko, decided to become a full-time beekeeper and moved from Split to the beautiful island of Šolta. One of the main reasons for the relocation was in fact the bees, since only on Šolta can one produce the exclusive rosemary honey called Olintio.

Heute hat sich unser Fokus etwas verändert, weg von einer reinen Honigproduktion und hin zu einem viel breiteren Verständnis von Imkerei, das die Vermittlung von Wissen über Bienen miteinschließt. Aus diesem Grund haben wir, meine Frau Natasa und ich, Goran, begonnen, interessierten Zuhörern aus aller Welt mehr vom Kosmos der Bienen und ihrer Bedeutung für den Menschen zu erzählen.

Today my family has shifted its focus from merely producing honey towards caring about bees which we understand as a broader approach of beekeeping. This is why we, my wife Natasha and I, Goran, with the support of my children, Gorana and Tomislav, have dedicated ourselves to inform people on the importance of bees and the devastating effects their extinction could have on each and every one of us.

Vor mehr als einem Jahr haben wir das Projekt „Give bees a chance“ (Gebt den Bienen eine Chance) ins Leben gerufen. Im Rahmen dieses Projekts bitten wir unsere Besucher, uns ein Glas Honig von ihrem Imker zu Hause zu schicken. Auf diese Art und Weise unterstützen sie ihre Imker vor Ort, aber auch uns in unserem Projekt, und wir alle gemeinsam unterstützen die Bienen. Bis heute haben uns bereits mehr als 200 Besucher ihren Honig aus 54 Ländern von allen Kontinenten geschickt.

Recently we started a project called “Give Bees a Chance”. Within this project, we ask our visitors to send us one jar of honey from their hometown. In this way, they support their local beekeepers as well as us with our project. Today I am a very proud keeper of more than 200 honey jars from 54 countries from all continents.

Vor ungefähr fünf Jahren kamen wir zum ersten Mal in Kontakt mit Inselhüpfen. Kurz darauf hielten wir unsere ersten Präsentationen über Bienen, die noch in unserem Vorratslager stattgefunden haben. Mit der Zeit kamen mehr und mehr Radler und auch wir wuchsen mit der Herausforderung und dem vielen positiven Feedback unserer Gäste. Heute haben wir ein „Klassenzimmer“ in unserem Garten und einen Verkaufsraum, mit einem kleinen Museum über Bienen und ihre Produkte. Jeder, der an diesen kleinen emsigen Kreaturen interessiert ist, ist eingeladen, uns dort zu besuchen und mehr zu erfahren. Inselhüpfen hat uns stark in unserer Entwicklung unterstützt und wir möchten hier die Gelegenheit nutzen, für die nun schon 5-jährige Zusammenarbeit herzlich Danke zu sagen. Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn: Schaut vorbei, probiert unseren Honig und unterstützt uns in unserem täglichen Bemühen um das Überleben der Bienen auf dieselbe Weise, die uns die Bienen lehren: Mit Geduld, Bescheidenheit und Fleiß.

About five years ago our path crossed by chance with Islandhopping on Šolta. Shortly after, the first presentations were held in a tiny little space with only a few visitors. Year after year the cycling groups grew and so did we. The overwhelming positive feedback made us improve our performance a lot. Today we have an outside “classroom” as well as a shop which includes a little “museum” about bees where everyone who is interested in bees can learn more about these fascinating creatures. Islandhopping had a very significant influence on our development. We are very happy to be working together and would like to use this opportunity to thank them for this collaboration. Let me stop here with my words and instead invite you to visit us, to “taste” us, and to help us fight this everyday battle for the survival of the bees in the way the bees have taught us: in silence, modesty and diligence. Kleine Missgeschicke, bedingt durch äußere Umstände, bringen uns manchmal unverhofft besondere Momente

o geschehen 2004 in der griechischen Ägäis. Poseidons Wellen waren zu groß und stark, um die heilige Insel Patmos anzusteuern und wir strandeten außerplanmäßig auf Lipsi. Die winzige Insel mit kaum befahrbaren Asphaltstraßen und gerade einmal 300 Einwohnern hat selbst uns als erfahrene Radler vor Herausforderungen gestellt. Nur wenige Kilometer nach dem Startschuss landeten wir, ganz anders als es die Karte für uns vorgesehen hatte, vor einem kleinen weißen Würfelhaus mit der netten, auf ein altes Holzschild gepinselten Aufschrift: „Dimitris‘ Farm“. Neben Ziegen, Schafen, Katzen und selbstangebauten Produkten fanden wir dort auch Dimitris selbst vor. Gemäß griechischer Gastfreundschaft wurde es ein längerer geselliger Aufenthalt inklusive Verköstigung.

Small misfortunes can occasionally result in the most special moments

great example of this occurred in 2004 in the Northern Greek Aegean. Poseidon‘s waves were too big and strong for us to navigate to the holy island of Patmos, leaving us stranded on wonderful Lipsi. The tiny island with poor asphalt roads and a small population of aprx. 300 inhabitants challenged us, even as experienced cyclists. Only a few kilometers out of town the road we were on, depicted quite differently on the map, ended in front of a small white cube house. A friendly inscription, painted on an old wooden board hung on the wall read, „Dimitris’ Farm“. Besides the goats, sheep, cats and self-made products which we were greeted by, we also met Dimitris. In accordance with typical Greek hospitality it turned out to be a long sociable stay including a small produce tasting.

Bei dem Farmbesitzer war man zu jeder Zeit, egal wann und mit wie vielen Leuten, willkommen. Und das spürte man auch sofort. Irgendwann schafften wir es dann doch zurück auf unsere Räder - diesmal ohne ungeplante Umwege. Der Rest unserer Inselhüpfen-Woche verlief nach Plan, aber irgendwie war es dieser Moment auf Lipsi, der am Ende die tiefsten Eindrücke hinterlassen hat. Warum fragt man sich, aber die Antwort ist klar. Weil dieser Moment ‚echt‘ war und die Freude eines alten Mannes mit einem Lächeln im Gesicht beim Bewirten von völlig Fremden etwas Vollkommenes ist. Nach der Reisewoche war klar: „Wir wollen wieder kommen. Neue Insel, tolle Menschen.“ In der Folgesaison wollten wir, voller Vorfreude, Dimitris wieder besuchen und diesmal kannten wir den Weg zum alten Mann und seiner Farm. Aber Dimitris war in der Zwischenzeit verstorben und die einstige Farm abgewirtschaftet und unbewohnt.

Everyone is welcome on Dimitris’ farm, no matter when or with whom – the welcoming atmosphere can be felt immediately. After some time we made it back to our bikes - this time without any additional detours. The rest of our Islandhopping week went according to plan, but somehow it was this experience on Lipsi which left the deepest impression on us all. Why? The answer is clear: because this moment was ‚real‘ and the joy of an old man with a smile on his face, whilst being a complete stranger, was sincere. After this week one thing was clear to us: We want to come back. A new island and wonderful people. In the following season we looked forward to seeing Dimitris again, and this time we knew the way to the old man and his farm. On our return Dimitris had passed away and the farm appeared run down and uninhabited.

Sieben Jahre verstrichen bis wir wieder einmal auf Lipsi landeten. Diesmal war unser Ziel, neue Wege für eine MTB Reise zu finden. Wir probierten jede erdenkliche Möglichkeit per Bike aus und kamen wieder an der Stelle vorbei, an der wir Dimitris trafen. „Dimitris‘ Farm Organic Products from Lipsi“ stand vor dem Eingang des Grundstücks. Zu neuem Leben erweckt wurde die Farm von Kostas. Nach einigen Jahren in einer amerikanischen Großstadt ist sein Ziel, ein einfaches Leben auf einer kleinen unberührten Insel zu führen und dem Stress zu entfliehen. Seit 2012 führt Kostas die Farm nun schon. Sie beliefert den lokalen Supermarkt und eine Handvoll griechischer Tavernen mit frischem Gemüse, Käse und anderen Produkten. Hilfe bekommt Kostas von einem selbst ins Leben gerufenen, internationalen Volunteer Projekt für Ökofarming, bei dem sich jährlich sogar circa 1.000 Leute bewerben, Platz gibt es allerdings nur für 90. Bis jetzt waren mehr als 500 Helfer vor Ort. Eine tolle Geschichte, die Inselhüpfen mit regelmäßigen Besuchen gerne unterstützt.

Seven years passed until we landed on Lipsi again. This time our goal was to find new MTB trails. We rode every conceivable possibility by bike and came back to the place where we had previously met Dimitris. „Dimitris’ Farm and Organic Products from Lipsi“ has been revived by someone called Kostas. After a few years in an American city his goal was to lead a simple life on a small untouched island to escape the stress of city life. He has managed the farm since 2012. It supplies the local supermarket and a handful of Greek taverns with fresh vegetables, cheese and other products. Help is given by a self-initiated, international volunteer project for eco-farming, attracting interest from around 1,000 people annually, with limited capacity allowing aprx. 90 candidates to take part. To date, more than 500 volunteers have been there. A lovely story, which Islandhopping gladly supports with regular visits in the future. Text: LARS ADAM

rigg, Bark oder Klipper – sind das Kartenspiele? Weit gefehlt, es handelt sich bei diesen Begriffen um verschiedene Segelschiffstypen. Durch die Kraft des Windes und unter offenen Segeln befahren sie die Gewässer unserer Erde. Früher waren sie das wichtigste Verkehrsmittel für längere Distanzen, dienten meist dem Handel, aber auch der Bekämpfung des Gegners in Kriegszeiten. Seit einigen Jahren sind die urtümlichen, imposanten Tallships im Tourismussektor angekommen. Den Traum, einmal auf einem großen Segelschiff Urlaub zu machen, die Segel zu hissen und die Atmosphäre auf so einem besonderen Boot zu genießen, erfüllt Inselhüpfen seinen Gästen seit geraumer Zeit.

re you familiar with the terms brig, bark or clipper? Although they may sound like card games, these terms are used for a variety of different sailing boats. Harnessing the force of the wind and under sail, they navigate the waters of our earth. In the past they were the most important means of transport for longer distances, mostly serving as trade vessels but also for combat in times of war. For some years now the ancient and imposing tall ships have approached a new purpose in tourism. The dream of spending a holiday on a big sailing ship, hoisting the sails and enjoying the atmosphere on such a special boat is a dream Islandhopping has been fulfilling for quite some years.

Zu unserer Atlantis, die auf den spanischen Balearen unterwegs ist, der Flying Dutchman in Schottland und der Thalassa in Nordirland kommen in unserem Jubiläumsjahr 2018 vier weitere Großsegler der niederländischen Flotte, wie z. B. die Mare fan Fryslan und die Elizabeth, dazu. Auf diesen Schiffen kommt Seefahrerromantik und Seemannsgarn nicht zu kurz, was das Reisen auf den Tallships besonders macht. Es ist meist von einer einzigartigen Gruppendynamik geprägt, die durch das gemeinsam an einem Strang, besser gesagt: Fall, ziehen und die intensiven Erlebnisse in Atem beraubender Natur bestärkt wird. Auf der Atlantis allein sind schon 8 km Tauwerk verarbeitet. Die Crew empfängt die Gäste mit offenen Armen und hat viele spannende Geschichten zu erzählen. Und auch wenn so ein Segeltörn mal etwas rauer zugehen kann: Die erfahrenen Kapitäne und ihren Mannschaften vollbringen die Überfahrten stets mit spielerischer Leichtigkeit.

In addition to the Atlantis, which navigates the waters around the Spanish Balearic Islands, the Flying Dutchman in Scotland, and the Thalassa in Northern Ireland, four further tall ships will join out fleet for our anniversary in 2018. Residing in Holland the Elizabeth, Mare fan Fryslan, Wapen fan Fryslan and Leafde fan Fryslan will not only enrich our fleet but also the regions in which we offer our tours. Your visit on board is characterized by splendid sunsets and nights on anchor accompanied by the odd seaman’s yarn and the occasional midnight chantey. The cooperative experiences on board, such as the setting of sails (and scrubbing of decks) and the common interest for the outdoors, lead to a special unity within our travel groups on board of our tall ships. The crew welcomes the guests with open arms and have many exciting stories to tell. Jan Rebel heißt unser Koch auf der Flying Dutchman und ein Stück weit könnte man meinen, dass sein Nachname einen gewissen Einfluss auf sein Leben hatte: In einem früheren Leben war Jan ein erfolgreicher Hotelmanager und Koch, der es mit Fleiß und Talent zu mehreren eigenen Hotels und Restaurants gebracht hat – bis ihn schließlich der Ruf der Freiheit ereilte und er beschloss, sein altes gestresstes Leben hinter sich zu lassen und seine Hotels zu verkaufen. Es zog ihn hinaus auf See und so heuerte er auf der Flying Dutchman als Koch an. Je länger Jan an Bord war, desto internationaler wurde seine Kochkunst und hierfür hat er selbstverständlich eine plausible Erklärung parat: Wie es sich für einen richtigen Seemann gehört, hatte er natürlich auch in jedem Hafen ein Mädchen und dem entsprechend natürlich auch die dazugehörige Schwiegermutter. Und woher kommen die besten Rezepte? Natürlich von den lieben Schwiegermamas. So hat jeder Gast auf einer Reise mit Jan das kulinarische Vergnügen nach Rezepten von Schwiegermüttern um den halben Globus bekocht zu werden. Fast bedauerlich ist es daher, dass er nun auch zur See die Karriereleiter emporklettert und in Zukunft Kapitän der Flying Dutchman sein wird. Aber wir sind sicher, dass er seine Rezepte gerne an den neuen Koch weiterreichen und auch in Zukunft ein wachendes Auge auf die Kombüse haben wird.

Jan Rebel has occupied the galley on board the Flying Dutchman for several years now and has recently earned himself the title of Captain Cook. How he got there and why the title, well that’s a story in itself: Some time ago, in a distant past, Jan was a successful hotel manager and cook who’s talent in the trade led him to acquire the leading role in several hotels and restaurants… until one day the call of freedom led him to sell his hotels and turn a leaf on his stressful life as a hotelier. He ventured out to sea and found his happy place as a cook on board of the Flying Dutchman. The longer he spent on board, the larger his repertoire of international cuisine became… and this is how it happened: Fitting to a real seaman, is a lassie in every harbor and of course the accompanying mother-in-law and who has the best recipes? Typically speaking, the inlaws. It is in this way that Jan takes pride in introducing his international family to all the guests who venture on board the Flying Dutchman. However, typical to his past, Jan has always had an ambitious stride and recently earned himself the title of captain on board, starting into the new season with a legacy to his name as, Captain Cook. We are certain that Jan will pass his experience and recipes onto his successor and keep a watchful eye on the galley and its fruits of labor. Text: MARTIN LÜBKE

Shepherd’s Pie Von Jans schottischer Schwiegermutter ist das folgende Rezept für einen Shepherd’s Pie überliefert: The following is a recipe for Shepard‘s Pie which Jan acquired from his Scottish mother-in-law: Servings: 4 . 300g mincemeat (lamb or beef) . 1 large onion . 2 cloves of garlic . 2 medium sized leeks .150g champignons . 500 g floury cooking potatoes . some milk . some butter and salty water . 3 dashes of Tabasco sauce . a pinch of curry . 200ml bouillon . 1 TS starch . some water for consistency . 150g cheddar cheese (grated) . Salt and pepper . Greased baking form

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C. Peel the potatoes and cut them into small cubes, cook in salted water. 2. In the meantime sear the mincemeat. Peel and chop the onions fine, add to the meat. Chop the champignons into slices and add them to the pot. Press the garlic into the mix and stir. Douse with bouillon, and flavor with Tabasco and a pinch of curry. Season with salt and pepper and if necessary, thicken the mix with some starch. 3. Cut the leek into rounds, and blanch in broth. 4. Mash the boiled potatoes and add a splash of milk and a generous knob of butter before adding some of the cheese and mixing. Add the mash to the greased baking form, followed by the leeks and thereafter the mincemeat stew. Cover the meat with grated cheddar cheese and bake in the oven for approx. 15 – 20min. (or until brown).

Rezept für 4 Personen 300 g Hackfleisch vom Lamm oder Rind 1 große Zwiebel(n) 2 Zehen Knoblauch 2 mittelgroße Stangen Lauch 150 g Champignons 500 g Kartoffeln, mehlig kochend etwas Milch evtl. etwas Butter, evtl. Salzwasser 3 Spritzer Tabasco ein wenig Curry 200 ml Fleischbrühe 1 TL Speisestärke etwas Wasser zum Anrühren 150 g Cheddarkäse, gerieben Salz und Pfeffer Fett für die Form

1. Den Backofen auf 220°C vorheizen. Die Kartoffeln schälen und in kleine Würfel schneiden, in Salzwasser kochen. 2. In der Zwischenzeit das Hackfleisch anbraten. Die Zwiebel schälen, fein würfeln, mit anbraten. Die Champignons in Scheiben schneiden und ebenfalls mit anbraten. Den Knoblauch dazu pressen, kurz unterrühren. Mit Brühe ablöschen, mit Tabasco und ein wenig Curry abschmecken. Mit Salz und Pfeffer würzen. Ggf. mit kalt angerührter Speisestärke etwas andicken. 3. Den in Ringe geschnittenen Lauch kurz in Brühe blanchieren. 4. Die abgegossenen Kartoffeln stampfen, wer mag, gibt etwas Milch und Butter dazu und gibt einen Teil des geriebenen Käses mit bei. In einer eigefetteten Form wird der Kartoffelbrei verteilt. Anschließend folgen der blanchierte Lauch und zuletzt die Hackmasse. Das ganze wird schließlich mit dem Käse bestreut. Ca. 15 - 20 Min. (je nach gewünschtem Bräunungsgrad) im Ofen überbacken. ISLANDHOPPING 51

Wussten Sie, dass bereits die römischen Legionäre ein dem Dudelsack sehr ähnliches Instrument benutzten, als sie sich in Richtung Norden aufmachten? Wir haben das von Dudelsackspieler Sandy MacDonell erfahren, der uns von Zeit zu Zeit auf unseren Schottlandreisen besucht hat und uns seine Geschichte erzählte.

We inherited this information from Sandy MacDonell, a skilled bagpiper who has kindly visited us in the past on board the Flying Dutchman during our tour of the Caledonian Canal.

Th i s i s his stor y „I began my bagpiping journey at the tender age of 8. My father played a number of instruments by ear and my parents were keen to encourage me. My first instrument was the piano and although I could play, it wasn’t a match made in heaven. When I tried the bagpipe however, I quickly realised that this was the instrument for me. My two brothers and I were very fortunate to receive tuition from some of the top pipers of the day and we very quickly became involved in the solo competition scene where we learnt to play at a very high standard. Throughout our early years we played at numerous events, both together and as soloists. In turn music offered us many opportunities. Many years later I turned this early opportunity into a business. Now I play at numerous and varied events. There are many groups that I am very proud to have been associated with over the years; The Royal British Legion, The HFTC Association (a group of WWII veterans), Clan Donald and the Culloden Commemorations. I am the official piper for the Clan Donald Society of the Highlands and Islands and have played for nearly all the Clan Donald Chiefs at one time or another. I am most closely associated with my own Clan chief, Ranald MacDonell of Glengarry. I’ve been lucky to have played for many famous people and in many different countries and it is always a great experience. Being a musician is about the connection with people through music and sharing the history and culture that both the instrument and the music represent. I’m always delighted to be invited to play for my friends on the Flying Dutchman. One occasion that I always remember and often mention is an early visit to the Flying Dutchman at Corpach when, soon after I started playing, all the guests came off the boat to dance on the pier. Bagpiping is a passion and I’m delighted to share its history, music and culture with all who will listen.“

„Meine Reise in die Welt des Dudelsacks begann im zarten Alter von 8 Jahren. Davor hatte ich bereits das Klavierspiel erlernt, das aber nie so recht zu mir passen wollte. Nachdem ich jedoch zum ersten Mal einen Dudelsack in den Händen hielt wurde mir schnell klar, dass dieses Instrument wie für mich gemacht war. Gemeinsam mit meinen beiden Brüdern hatte ich das große Glück, von einigen herausragenden Dudelsackspielern unterrichtet zu werden und schon bald nahmen wir an Wettbewerben teil, wo auf sehr hohem Niveau gespielt wurde. Viele Jahre später habe ich die Musik zu meinem Beruf gemacht. Seither spiele ich auf verschiedensten Veranstaltungen und zu unterschiedlichsten Anlässen. Ich bin stolz darauf, im Laufe der Jahre mit vielen namhaften Gruppen aufgetreten zu sein, wie zum Beispiel der königlich britischen Legion. Ich fungiere auch als offizieller Piper der Clan Donald Society und habe für nahezu alle Clan Chiefs des Clan McDonald gespielt. Musiker zu sein bedeutet für mich aber vor allem, durch die Musik eine Verbindung zu meinen Zuhörern aufzubauen und die Geschichte meines Instruments mit ihnen zu teilen. Ich freute mich immer sehr, für meine Freunde auf der Flying Dutchman zu spielen, denn Dudelsackspielen ist meine Passion. Ein Ereignis, an das ich besonders gerne zurückdenke, ist ein Auftritt auf der Flying Dutchman in Corpach. Schon kurz nachdem ich angefangen hatte zu spielen, kamen die Gäste an Land, um auf dem Pier zu tanzen.“ Euer Sandy

Mit der Melody läuft die erste First Class Yacht vom Stapel. Ein echtes Wohlfühlschiff, das neben der San Snova (siehe Seite 14) und der Harmonia schon das dritte Inselhüpfen-Schiff der Familie Šerka ist. The arrival of our newest boat, Melody, initiates our First Class category. The boat aims to cater for our guests in all aspects and is the third ship in the Šerka family operating for Islandhopping in addition to the San Snova (see page 14) and the Harmonia.

Das Jahr des Mountainbikes. Zum ersten Mal werden reine MTB Reisen in der Kvarner Bucht, Süddalmatien und der griechischen Ägäis durchgeführt. Das von uns mit organisierte MTBRennen „4 Islands MTB Stage Race“ geht schon in die zweite Runde. Darüber hinaus steht der Relaunch unserer Webseite an, die ein ganz neues Gesicht bekommt. The year of the MTB. For the first time exclusive MTB cruises are carried out in the Kvarner Bay, Southern Dalmatia and the Greek Aegean Sea. The „4 Islands MTB Stage Race“, which we help to execute, has its second triumph. In addition, our new website is launched and brings with it a new look.

Wir bauen Trails in der Griechischen Ägäis (siehe Seite 32) und eröffnen unsere erste eigene Bikestation in Rabac/Kroatien.

20 Jahre Inselhüpfen! Unsere Jubiläumsreise führt zu den Inselperlen der Ägäis, die Newstar ist das zweite First Class Schiff und kreuzt zwischen Zadar und Dubrovnik. Per Hotel & Rad geht es über die norwegischen Lofoten auf Charitytour für die Internationale Katastrophenhilfe.

After expanding and moving our office space for the third time, we find a new residence for our IH-HQ in a spacious and friendly building at Max Stromeyer-Str. 57 in Constance. With the Hotel & Bike trip in South Africa, we welcome a new continent to our program. We build trails in the Greek Aegean (see page 32) and open up our first landbased bike center in Rabac/Croatia.

20 years of Islandhopping! We cellebrate with a tour to the Pearls of the Aegean Sea. The Newstar is the second first class ship to join our fleet and cruises between Zadar and Dubrovnik. A new combination of hotel, bike and ferry gives our guests the chance to experience the impressive Norwegian Lofoten, available as a charity tour in support of international disaster relief.
