MIDNIGHT GARDEN STRING BLOCK CUSHION Cut Bosal Light Fusible Batting to the size of the cushion top. Iron batting and pillow top together. Machine or hand quilt starting at the center and working towards the corners. BACKING Take 19” x 18” and 19” x10” COSMOS FLOWER pieces for backing. Turn one short edge of the backing piece under ¼” press. Turn same long edges under 1” again and press. Topstitch folded edges to hem. Repeat for the other backing piece. With wrong sides together lay backing of the cushion and front of the cushion together overlapping hemmed edges of cushion back pieces. Trim the edges to make square shape. BINDING Sew 2½” binding strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams. Sew binding around the cushion with mitered corners. Pin the binding to a side of the cushion front approx. 5” away from the corner. Start stitching binding strip with ¼” seam allowance, leaving an approximated 3” tail. Use a walking foot. Keep sewing until you reach a corner, and stop stitching ¼” before the next corner of the cushion. Remove fabrics from under the machine foot. Fold the binding strip away in a motion of 45°, pressing with your fingers. Hold this fold, bring the strip in line with next edge. Start sewing at ¼” of the border, stitching all the layers. Do the same in the four corners. Stop stitching before you reach the last 4”. Cut the threads and remove the fabric from under the machine presser foot. Lay the loose ends of the binding flat along the edge, folding the ends back on themselves where they meet. Press them together to form a crease. Using this crease as the stitching line, sew binding pieces together. Trim excess fabric and complete stitching.
