MEASUREMENTS

Height 104, 110, 116, 122cm

Skirt length 29 - 31 - 33 - 35cm

Seam allowance is 1cm.

Hem allowance is 4cm.

MATERIALS:

• Birch x Gütermann Portofino Fabric.

• Matching Sewing Cotton.

• Elastic.

• Scissors & Pins.

• Sewing machine.

Skirt Fabric: 640957-FEATHER BLUE

Bow Fabric: 640958-PINK

CUTTING OUT

SKIRT:

Fold fabric in half widthwise and cut 2 pieces from 640957-FEATHER BLUE.

WAIST BAND:

Fold fabric in half widthwise and cut 640957-FEATHER BLUE fabric pattern.

BOW:

Fold fabric in half widthwise and cut 640958-PINK fabric

WAISTBAND

Fold the waistband in half along its length WRONG sides together and press.

Open out and fold the top edge over 1cm. Press the fold. Open out again, then place the short ends right sides together.

Sew the waistband seam from the top edge to the 1cm fold, securing the thread at the end.

Sew again from the centre fold to the bottom edge. Press the folds back into place.

You now have a waistband with an opening that you will later use to thread the elastic through.

The main part of this skirt will be sewn to the unfolded edge. Divide the waistband into quarters and mark using pins.

MAIN SKIRT

Sew the side seams of the skirt together. Press these seams open.

Press the seam allowances towards the waistband. You might need to remove some of the gathering threads. RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER

Fold the raw edge at the bottom of the skirt to inside 1cm. Press. Fold up an additional 3cm and press. Stitch 2.5cm from the lower edge, thereby catching the hem.

To gather the skirt, sew one row about 1cm from the edge of the fabric using the longest stitch length on your machine. Divide the top edge of the skirt into quarters and mark it with pins.

CASING

Fold the waistband to the inside and press.

It should just cover the seamline. Pin into place and stitch close to the bottom fold. This will hopefully be almost along the seamline between the skirt and waistband.

Using safety pins, thread the elastic through the casings.

Now you should measure the waist of the child you are sewing for and cut your elastic to size, adding 2-3cm extra so that you have room to stitch the two ends together. Be careful that you don’t allow the elastic to twist as you thread it.

ATTACH WAISTBAND TO SKIRT

Match up the quarter points on the waistband and the skirt and pin the raw edges and right sides together. Pull up the gathering threads until the skirt fits onto the waistband. Pin in place, adjusting the gathers evenly. Sew the skirt to the waistband.

BOW

Fold the bow piece lengthwise, right side facing in. Stitch along the edges, leaving a section of seam open. Turn the bow piece right side out. Sew seam opening closed. Press and stitch it to the belt.
