Page 1

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

• Cotton Tunic / Oversized Top

• Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye in your favorite colours (We Used a Mixture of Navy and Evening Blue)

• Small Container for Dye

• Rubber Bands

• Rubber Gloves

• Squeeze Bottle with Fine Nozzle

• Plastic Table Cover

• Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative (Recommended)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Cover work area with plastic table cover and have paper towels handy to protect against any possible spills.

2. Prewash tunic, rinse and leave damp.

3. Lay out damp tunic flat on your work surface, gather or fold fabric horizontally and tie 7-8 rubber bands to split tunic into even sections. For more dyed sections, use more rubber bands, for more white sections, use less rubber bands.

4. Fill a small container with 4 cups of very hot water. Wearing gloves, mix 4 teaspoons of well-shaken Evening Blue All-Purpose Dye with 2 teaspoons of Navy All-Purpose Dye. Stir well.

5. Fill a squeeze bottle with the mixed dye. Carefully squeeze the dye from the bottle around every rubber band. Let sit for 10 minutes or so.

6. Recommended: Use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative after dyeing and before washing to enhance the colour, increase colour retention and prevent dye from bleeding into white areas. Pour fixative into a spray bottle and spray the tunic. Let set for 20 minutes.

7. Rinse in cool water until water runs clear.

8. Cut away rubber bands and unfold tunic to reveal pattern.

9. Hand wash in warm water with mild detergent, rinse and dry.

Everyone loves a good shibori pattern in the summer. Tunics are a staple festival fashion item. So, we felt pairing a tunic with a shibori print was a must! If a tunic isn’t readily available, an oversized t-shirt will work equally as well. Use one or multiple colours to create your own look. Learn how below!
