Swaddle blankets are a MUST with newborns. We took a simple white swaddle blanket and elevated it by adding a fun design and beautiful colour. Perfect for gifts or to keep for your sweet baby.
TIME: 1-2 Hour
DIFFICULTY: Beginner
1. Cover work area with plastic table cover and have paper towels handy to protect against any possible spills. Gather supplies.
2. Cut twine in three 25” pieces. Set aside.
3. Wet fabric.
4. Scrunch blanket lengthwise.
5. Wrap twine around one third of the blanket and secure with a knot. Repeat two more times in equal sections. Set aside to prepare the dyebath.
6. To prepare the dyebath: Fill a large plastic container with 11.4 litres (3 gallons) of very hot water. The water should ideally be 60ºC (140ºF).
If tap water is not hot enough, heat water on the stove and add to the dyebath.
7. To help enhance the colour, add one cup of salt to the dyebath.
8. Add 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent to help promote level dyeing.
9. Wearing rubber gloves, add 1/2 cup of well-shaken Dark Green dye to the dyebath. Stir well.
10. Add blanket to the dyebath. For a high contrast pattern, keep the blanket in the dyebath for about 3 to 5 minutes to keep the wrapped part dye-free. For more colour and less white areas, let the wrapped fabric sit in the dyebath for 10 to 20 minutes.
11. When desired colour is achieved, remove blanket from the dyebath. Do not remove twine.
12. We strongly recommend using Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing and before washing. It enhances the colour, increases colour retention and prevents dye from bleeding into white areas. Follow package instructions.
13. Rinse in cool water until rinse water begins to run clear.
14. Carefully remove wood blocks and rubber bands. Unfold the blanket.
15. Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.
