President’s Report A huge apology from me. This newsletter is meant to be one based solely on our show and was meant to be out several months ago but we have been waiting for judges reports to come in. As we still don't have them we have decided to send it out anyway so please excuse the lack of content Well our show has been and gone and the hard working committee can finally sit back and put their feet up for a while. A huge thank you to the committee, sponsors and exhibitors (some of which came from the South Island), the lovely people who provided the delicious treats from the kitchen and anyone else who did anything to help make our show a success. The good number of cats’, were all in top condition and were a credit to their owner’s. The setup of the hall looked good and there was plenty of room for the public to make their way around and see what was going on. I heard several comments on the abundance of prizes and ribbons. For those of you who weren't there, our patrons Robyn and Dougal Meyers were presented with a bouquet of flowers and a certificate for Life Membership, what a well deserved life membership it was too! Congratulations to all who achieved Top 10 placings, Supremes and Breeders Awards. Your hard work has paid off. Hopefully we will see you all and a few new exhibitors next year. Once again thanks to all

Judges Reports 13.7.2013. Ring 3 - Judge, Rosemary Wilson First of all, let me say. “thank you” to all the exhibitors who allowed me to judge their lovely Birmans. Some were delightful show cats and a joy to judge, some were a little bit grumpy by the time I judged them, and some were just lovely Birmans’ who were there to bring the number of entries up. All were very much appreciated. In some sections, it was a nit picking moment to decide between some of the placings. The grooming was very good all round, thank you. There were, also, some really lovely cats in the Companion cats section. The owners should be very proud of them all.

Entire Cats B I S, cage number 2, seal point male, Ch Sceiron Raffles, owned and bred by M Robinson and P Spink. He was my best seal point. I loved the head on this boy and a great roman nose. Very good eye colour. Extremely good boning. And he was a delight to judge. R\U BIS, cage number 15, blue point male, Gd Db Gr Ch Leegrgo Blue Boy, owned and bred by J & J Davey. This was my best blue point. Once again, this cat had a great head, and also, a very good roman nose. He also had very nice eye colour. 3rd BIS, cage number 16, lilac point female and my best lilac, Ch Florencia Chantilly Lace, owned by S Dennehy and bred by J Fletcher. I found it very hard to decide between the two lilac girls, and in the end it was the colouring that made my decision. 4th BIS, cage number 1, seal point female, my second seal point, Ch Belzicatz Lady Bellamia, owned and bred by D Holtom. This girl has a very nice head and big boning, and was very well groomed. I thought her coat was quite shaded for her age. 5th BIS, cage number 17, lilac point female, my second lilac point, Ch Belzicatz Velvet Mist, owned and bred by D Holtom. I found it very hard to decide between the two lilac girls, and in the end it was the colouring that made my decision. My BAM went to cage number 18, cream point female, Sl Db Gr Ch Sceiron Rhiannon, bred and owned by M Robinson and P Skink. This girl has the most fantastic point colour. It is so seldom that you see a really good cream colour. She is neither too pale nor too hot, she is just right. Bit like Goldilocks porridge.

Entire Kittens BIS, cage number 24, seal point male, my best seal point, Belzicatz Rebels Ladd, owned and bred by D Holtom. It was a close call between the two seal point kittens, But this kitten had the best clarity of colour. R/U BIS, cage number 25, blue point female , my best blue point kitten, Starpaws Wicked Dreams, owned and bred by M DeWar. A very nice little girl with lovely soft blue to her colouring. Once again, it was nit picking between the two blue point girls. 3rd BIS, cage number 27, blue tabby point female, Moonson Princess Grace, owned and bred by S Dennehy. This little girl was very nice indeed, with a really good head, but unfortunately at the time I was judging her, she was getting a little grumbly, so I did mark her down a little because of that. 4th BIS, cage number 23, seal point male, my second seal point, owned and bred by Y Murphy. There was very little difference between cages 24 and 23. 5th BIS, cage number 26, blue point female, my second blue point kitten,Starpaws Wicked Desires, owned and bred by M DeWar. As with the seal points, there was very little between the two blue point girls, in fact looks like they are litter sisters. My BAM went to cage number 28, chocolate tabby point female, Starpaws Little Vamp, owned and bred by M DeWar. Very pretty chocolate tabby with great point colour. This is a fairly new colour to the show bench and good colouring needs to be rewarded.

Neuter/Spey Cats BIS, cage number 40, seal tabby point spay, Gl Dbl Gr Ch & Gd Db Gr PrYadillah Abbergail Rose, owned and bred by P & P Halliday. I just loved this girl, I could not fault her. Wonderful head, roman nose just right, lovely eye colour and great boning for a female. R/U BIS, cage number 31, seal point neuter, and my best seal point, Pr Moonson Paddington Bear, owned by S & J Gill and bred by S Dennehy. Very nice head with a good roman nose, and great eye colour. There was very little between the three seal points. 3rd BIS, cage number 39, seal tabby spay, my second tabby point, Ch & Pr Birpur Melting Moments owned and bred by J & J Davey. Just a little shorter in the body that cage number 40, but still a well balanced cat with great eye colour. 4th BIS, cage number 30, seal point spay, my runner up seal point, Bz Db Gr Pr Yaddillah Tessie Bear, owned by L Preston and bred by P & P Halliday. This girl had exceptional eye colour but was a little shaded in the coat. 5th BIS, cage number 32, seal point neuter, my third best seal point Gd Db Gr Pr Yaddillah Royal Rascal, owned by P & P Halliday & R Smith and bred by P & P Halliday, (and litter brother to my second seal point, I see). As I said, very little between the three seal points. My N/S BAM went to cage number 36, a red point neuter, Pr Sceiron Ramsey, owned by K & A Jackson and bred by M Robinson and P Skink. As with the entire cat that received my BAM, a lovely cream point girl, this red point is once again, the correct colour for a red point, just right, has a lovely glow to the colour.

Neuter/Spay Kittens BIS, cage number 44, blue tabby point spay, my best blue tabby point, Moonson Lady Elizabeth, owned by O & S Gill and bred by S Dennehy. A lovely little girl, beautifully groom and a joy to handle. It was hard to fault this little girl. R/U BIS, cage number 43, blue point neuter, my best blue point Belzicatz Frostbite owned and bred by D Holtom. A delightful blue colour suited to his name, pale cool blue point colour. 3 BIS, cage number 45, blue tabby neuter and my second blue tabby, and also litter brother to my BIS, I see. Owned by O & S Gill and bred by S Dennehy.

Shorthair Companion, Ring 2 BIS cage number 49, Gd Db Gr Pr Molly Too, owned by R & M MacKenzie. Very nicely groomed and had a wonderful personality. R/U BIS cage number 48, Gd Db Gr Pr CC Jack, owned by C Ryan. Nicely balanced cat with a well groomed coat. 3rd BIS, cage number 47, Amy, owned by S & G Lane. Very pretty tortie with a great, well groomed coat.

Longhair Companion, Ring 2 BIS, cage number 60, Gd Dg Gr Pr CC Thor, owned by J & I Scott. This cat has solid boning was beautifully groomed . Was a very well balanced cat with a great personality. R/U BIS, cage number 51, Rocky, owned by C Philp. This was a delightful kitten who was a joy to handle. He had a well balanced body with good boning for his age. Beautiful eye colour to match his well groomed coat. 3rd BIS, cage number 58, Stevie, owned by J & J Davey. This boy was a little on the shy side but he was very nicely groomed and had a good weight to his well balanced body.

2014 Show The 2014 show will be a combined show with the Taranaki Cat Club to be held in New Plymouth, on Saturday 5th July. This will be a 6 ring show (3 rings Taranaki All Breeds; with 3 rings Sacred Temple). This is because our usual venue has an earthquake stability problem. We hope as many as you as possible can come along and help make this show a success for both the clubs concerned. With 6 rings available for Birmans’ there is plenty of scope to gain a few valued points. Could anyone holding Nutrience bar codes please get them into Janice asap, as we need these for sponsorship. Also if anyone is wanting to promote their cattery or business and sponsor a set of ribbons could they also get in touch with Janice. We thank you for your support

Our Stories My first cat show was at the Hamilton Cat club show with my beautiful boy Leegrgo Bizkotti, (aka Bailie). His breeder told me he would do well in a show so off we trundled. To my dismay we didn't get anywhere so I thought "Oh well, never mind, he's my baby and I love him no matter what". Then the Patches and Pointed show was fast looming so managed to get him registered for that show after being talked into going over to Napier for it. Well, to my great delight, Mr Bizkotti got 5th overall supreme and went on to win many shows and soon became GoldDbleGrPr Leegrgo Bizkotti.

That was it for me, I then decided I needed to breed these magnificant creatures and it was all downhill (or uphill) from there. Birth announcements: Sildblegrch Atharry Kheta/Golddblegrch Shinoto Xanadu Blu 19/9/2012; 5 blue babies, two girls, three boys Leegrgo Dolly Do/Jaybrolei Lights on Broadway 21/9/2012; 4 seal babies, three girls one boy Ch Sandylands Roxanne/Golddblegrch Tanisha Buccaneer Blue 2/11/2012; 4 babies by caeserian, 1 deceased, 1 seal girl and 2 blue boys GrCh Sandylands Anatasia/GoldDblegrch Shinoto Xanadu Blu 27/11/2012; 5 babies C Sanders, Sandylands Birmans

Charley’s Story Charley is a neutered Bluepoint Birman (SilDblGrPr Sandylands Charley). He’s a big cat and slightly overweight, robust, playful and eats far too much! In May 2012 Charley got really sick, not long after a show. His sister took sick first, and was prescribed antibiotics and it seemed that he’d escaped the same fate. By the Friday (3 days after Hollie took sick), Charley was experiencing similar symptoms, throwing up frothy liquid, diorrhea, not eating, and very lethargic. On Saturday I rang the vet to get him an appointment, got him in the next day. After examination, he was also prescribed anti-biotic shots (including anti-nausea), tablets and sent home. Hollie was back at the vet the day after as she was still not eating, and was given additional shots, and a tablet to quick start her eating again, and was eating by the end of the day, and on the road to recovery. Charley was also given a tablet, but no go for him. He looked really miserable! By Thursday still no improvement for my boy so back to the vet. At this point they were concerned, and decided to keep him in for the day under observation, and a couple of blood tests. By the time I got to work I’d had a call from the vet, not good news. The tests had come back showing that he might have Pancreatitis, and were putting him on a drip, and what that could mean. Imagine the thoughts running through my head at the time. I visited him every evening after work, he was really down in the dumps, wasn’t purring and just didn’t give a damn, and was being syringe fed. By the Wednesday of the 2nd week

of illness, the Vet decided that they

needed to consult Pru Galloway

(feline specialist) to get her opinion,

and organised a conference call.

The result was that Pru thought he

might have Perotinitis, and

considered an ultrasound as the

appropriate next course of action,

she wasn’t able to see him until the

following Tuesday, and ended up

with all his fur shaved off around his

mid section.

I continued to visit Charley every night after work and took him his treats – Temptations – which he would eat 1 or 2 and then ignore, with wider family visits in the weekends. By the 2nd Friday he had started eating small amounts of food by himself, which was a good sign (compensated with syringe feeding), but the ultrasound was still required. On Saturday the vet thought that if he continued improving, that he would take the drip out on the Sunday. I was able to take Charley home overnight on the Sunday, and took him back to the vet the next morning. I think that was the turning point for him, he was able to spend time with his sister Hollie whom followed him around like a bad smell. I visited him the next night after work and was able to take him home again for the night, before I took him to see Pru the next day. After that he wasn’t hospitalised again. With the ultrasound he had all his tummy fur shaved off, but it was worth the sacrifice as it came back clear – no Pancreatitis – but Pru confirmed that he’d had an inflamed liver, gall bladder and pretty much confirmed that he’d had Pancreatitis, and was to continue on the antibiotics until end of June, as well as weekly checkups for his weight and bloods – more money!!! I had a new breed of cat, a ‘Pooman’, (poodle/birman). In all Charley spent 11 days hospitalised at the vet, and is susceptible to Pancreatitis at some time again in the future, and continues to have blood tests every 6 months as his white cell and lymphocyte count is low, which may require a bone marrow test at some point in the future. He hasn’t looked back since, and was back in the show ring in 2013, achieving Supreme Neuter/Spey at the Birman show in Hamilton, and reached Silver during the show season. As for the vet’s bill, it was 3 pages long, every 2nd line was a drug of some sort. Charley now has another sister, Lulu Belle, which he adores. Thanks to everyone for their support during Charley’s illness  Linda Morgan

Who Were Those Men? While sitting up on the stage, supposedly doing paper work but actually watching some of the judging going on below, I saw 2 well dressed young men walk in, one of which was carrying a brief case. They paid their entry then went to an empty chair, put the briefcase on it and opened it. I mentioned them to Janice who was sitting beside me and jokingly said "I think we're about to get shot or something"

One of them took a Winnie the Pooh Tigger suit out and proceeded to put it on over his clothes. The both of them then walked around looking at the cats and without saying a word to anyone. Without actually mentioning it to each other, Janice thought I had organised for them to come in and I thought she must have. Entering into the spirit of things, we called out that there was a stray cat in the hall and it hadn't been vetted in, could someone see to this please. Immediately Lance rolled up his sleeves, called for some gloves and went striding over to them. Now I know I haven't been showing for as long as some people, but I have never seen a vet roll up his sleeves and call for gloves when initially vetting a cat. I guess only Lance knows just what he was going to do and we sure didn't want to know. During the bantering about vetting, checking for fleas, a cat out of it's cage and several other comments the 2 kept a straight face and continued walking round looking at the cats. Once they had been round them all they went back to the briefcase, took the suit off, put it back in the briefcase and left, all without speaking to anyone. "Where did you find those 2" I said to Janice. “I don't know, I thought you organised them" ,she replied Pam Halliday
